Mitrice Richardson, a 24-year-old psychology graduate, disappeared on September 17, 2009, after being released from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station in Los Angeles, following her arrest for failing to pay an $89 restaurant bill and possessing a small amount of marijuana. Exhibiting erratic behavior suggestive of a mental health crisis, possibly undiagnosed bipolar disorder, Mitrice was released at 12:28 a.m. without her phone, wallet, or car, despite her mother's plea to hold her until morning. Last seen alive resting in a resident's backyard six hours later, her skeletal remains were found 11 months later in a remote canyon, with her clothing 700 feet away and no clear cause of death determined. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department faced criticism for releasing her, mishandling her remains, and obstructing the coroner's investigation, prompting lawsuits and allegations of foul play, though her death was ruled undetermined, not a homicide. Her case led to policy changes for missing persons and mental health evaluations, but her family continues to seek justice, believing she was murdered. We’ve all heard the saying that goes, “people will forget what you said, they will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel…” As we enter the season of giving and gratitude here in the US, sending gifts to our family members, friends, and customers is a tradition. Giving a gift to someone can be an incredibly powerful act, for better or for worse. As you’ll discover through the amazing stories you’ll hear today, when done thoughtfully and with care, sending a gift to someone can open the door to new relationships and opportunities in a way that nothing else can. It can create a bond and a connection with someone that can last a lifetime, and that will never be forgotten. But when done incorrectly, it can have the complete opposite effect that you desire… It can actually cause the recipient to feel like another sheep in the herd, misunderstood, unappreciated, or even disrespected. And unfortunately, most businesses shoot themselves in the foot every holiday season with impersonal, and lazy gift-giving campaigns they send to their customers, when they would have been much better off, sending nothing at all. Well to help us understand the incredible powers and dangers that come with giving gifts, we’re joined by a gentleman who’s literally dedicated his life to this practice… John Ruhlin. The story of how John discovered the power of gifts is absolutely incredible, and the wisdom he’s gained along the way when it comes to building relationships using gifts is unbelievably valuable. Many of you will have your lives changed by this interview one way or another... Please share it with your co-workers, business partners, and family members because the gifts you give do create strong feelings with your recipients. You just want to make sure those are positive feelings of appreciation, love, and gratitude, instead of accidentally triggering the opposite. With that being said, please help me welcome, John Ruhlin Resources: GiftologyPlan.com Giftology: The Art and Science of Using Gifts to Cut Through the Noise, Increase Referrals, and Strengthen Retention Music: Track: HYLO - Headstrong ft. The act of giving a truly meaningful gift to show the significance and importance of your relationship with others can be a tricky balance. What does gifting done right look like? Today’s returning guest is back with some wisdom on how to show appreciation and love through gifting. John Ruhlin is the Founder of the Ruhlin Group, where he helps companies develop VIP gifting programs. He is also the author of Giftology. He is an expert on the topic of meaningful gift giving. What do you give someone who has everything? How can you give a gift that makes a real difference in someone’s life? It all started when John met a very generous man. He’d often buy half of the raffle tickets at school auctions, win, and then donate it all back because he loved making people smile. John says that, still, the biggest gift that works well is gifting knives. Why? Because it’s difficult to gift an item that successful people can already buy. However, if you can take care of their inner circle; like their spouse, the kids, pets, and the family, that’s when you make the biggest impact. John likes to gift custom inscribed knives to each family member that by the time dinner rolls around, everyone is fighting over knives! People are still humans at the end of the day and being able to connect one and one with them is what makes a big difference in the quality of a relationship. If you wanted to get the CEO of a big corporation to buy your services, which salesperson would you send? Would you pick your top qualified salesperson, hire an agency, or just do it yourself? Why not enlist that CEO's spouse as the salesperson? He/she would be the ultimate salesperson. But how would you do that? You can't just call the CEO's spouse and ask them to be a salesperson and convince the CEO to buy your services. So why did one CEO's wife keep asking him--every day until he did--when he'd buy John Ruhlin's services? We're so focused on 10% and 50% returns. Some of us think about doubling our return or doing even more. Few of us truly set out to 10X our return. But a 100X return? Every dollar spent turning into $100? No ad will give you that. But giftology can. Listen to today's snippet to learn more. ''When we have purpose, we find power.'' - Jon Vroman What started as an organization to help people brave life-threatening illnesses, has grown into something much bigger than I ever imagined. If you’re brand new to the show, The Front Row Foundation is like Make-a-Wish meets Tony Robbins. We create life changing experiences for kids and adults who are fighting for their lives by putting them in the front row of their dream event. Today, we want to celebrate a major milestone! We’ve recently surpassed a decade of creating these experiences, which has resulted in over 100 magical moments for Front Row recipients! But what amazes me even more, is how this foundation has evolved over the years. It’s not just a wish organization, it’s a philosophy for life. We have built a community and culture that continues to ask the question: “how do we live every day in the front row fully engaged, closer to the things that make us come alive and make us feel like every moment of our life is meaningful?” To celebrate, I wanted to get together with some of the people who have been there from the beginning. Which brings us to today’s special conversation... In today’s roundtable discussion, 5 best friends—myself, Hal Elrod (International Bestselling Author of The Miracle Morning and #1 donor to The Front Row Foundation), Jon Berghoff (Managing Partner of the Flourishing Leadership Institute), John Ruhlin (Author of Giftology), and John Kane (Director of Sales at Cutco and first person to ever get the Front Row tatoo!)—revisit how The Front Row Foundation has brought us together and share stories of how we’ve supported each other over the years. Here’s a Quick Breakdown of Our Chat… [12:15] The power of relationships—5 best friends express their gratitude for being a part of a company culture that brought them together. [14:40] When the best things in life come from the most unexpected places—John Kane demonstrates this with one of his favorite John Ruhlin stories. [20:10] Find out what the Front Row Foundation means to each of the 5 friends and how an organization that started off as a way to help people fight life threatening illnesses, has grown into something much bigger! [23:10] An incredibly touching story of Front Row recipient Sophie and the moment she got to meet Kelly Clarkson—this story will really help you appreciate how precious life truly is! [31:36]Big lessons from The Front Row Factor: Transform Your Life with the Art of Moment Making—including how to empower your life by tapping into the past, present and future. Nobody succeeds alone. That’s the simple, yet very important takeaway from today’s conversation. When I was young, I didn’t believe I needed anybody’s help. I wanted to prove to the world that my success was mine—that I had made it completely on my own. Well, as you can probably imagine, that didn’t work out so well! Luckily, I started to recognize the power of relationships and how building a support system of likeminded and like-hearted individuals would not only catapult the success of my business endeavors, but would also bring a completely different level of joy and fulfillment into my life. 20 years later, I’m fortunate to be surrounded by an incredibly talented group of friends. Together we have empowered each other to succeed well beyond what we ever dreamed possible. In today’s roundtable discussion, 5 best friends—myself, Jon Berghoff (co-creator of the Best Year Ever Blueprint LIVE Experience), Jon Vroman (founder of Front Row Foundation), John Ruhlin (author of Giftology), and John Kane (record-setting endurance athlete)—revisit the biggest lessons from two decades of supporting each other. You’ll see that we have a lot of fun reliving past stories, sharing meaningful moments, and discussing the values and philosophies that have shaped our lives. You’ll also hear why the Front Row Foundation (think make-a-wish meets Tony Robbins) is the glue that keeps us all connected and how the values behind the organization are fully aligned with the way we are living and succeeding together! KEY TAKEAWAYS Leveraging the power of HUMOR in the midst of adversity—What Hal’s battle with cancer can teach us about making the most out of difficult situations. The not-so-obvious benefits that are hidden in your relationships—5 best friends express their gratitude and describe how the culture of one company brought them together. Find out what the Front Row Foundation means to each of us and how an organization that started off as a way to help people fight life threatening illnesses, has grown into a way of living! A returning guest to the podcast (Ep. 493), John Ruhlin discusses his new book, Giftology, which is a concept of how to maximize gifting which benefits relationship building through unique strides in care. Ruhlin is quick to point out that this isn't a mass distribution of a monetary item that creates the large impact, but the honest focus of understanding what the recipient will find specifically appealing to them. Ruhlin shares small little ways that change the dynamics of a relationship between two people, and how to ensure that it is never viewed as manipulative, but more instead as cross-beneficial.
