Mitrice Richardson, a 24-year-old psychology graduate, disappeared on September 17, 2009, after being released from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station in Los Angeles, following her arrest for failing to pay an $89 restaurant bill and possessing a small amount of marijuana. Exhibiting erratic behavior suggestive of a mental health crisis, possibly undiagnosed bipolar disorder, Mitrice was released at 12:28 a.m. without her phone, wallet, or car, despite her mother's plea to hold her until morning. Last seen alive resting in a resident's backyard six hours later, her skeletal remains were found 11 months later in a remote canyon, with her clothing 700 feet away and no clear cause of death determined. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department faced criticism for releasing her, mishandling her remains, and obstructing the coroner's investigation, prompting lawsuits and allegations of foul play, though her death was ruled undetermined, not a homicide. On January 10, 2019, the bodies of 37-year-old Nichol Olsen, along with her 2 daughters, 16-year-old Alexa Montez and 10-year-old London Bribiescas were found in the upscale Anaqua Springs Ranch home of Nichol's boyfriend, Charlie Wheeler. The Medical Examiner ruled this was a case of murder suicide, where Nichol killed her two daughters and then herself. On March 12th, 2011 at a Lululemon store in Bethesda Maryland store manager Rachel Oertli was set to open the store that morning. When she arrived at the store, she noticed the door was unlocked and there was merchandise spread across the store, not wanting to go in alone she had a bystander enter with her where they would discover worker Jayna Murray dead and Brittany Norwood injured and tied up. On February 24th 1986 29 year old Sherri Rasmussen would be found dead in her home by her husband John Ruetten. Sherri would have 3 bullet wounds to her chest as well as a bite in her arm. Police initially ruled it as a home invasion gone wrong. Would that be what happened? In August of 1992, the US Marshals Services were called to a property in the remote Boundary County of Idaho, called Ruby Ridge, to arrest Randy Weaver who had failed to make his court appearance for gun charges. The exchange between the Weavers and the US Marshals soon turned violent and the FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) was called in to help. On Oct 8, 2020, Rachel Bellesen met with her abusive ex-husband, Jacob Glace, to discuss matters related to their children. During the meeting, things turned violent with Jacob attacking Rachel and Rachel had to use deadly force to defend herself. On Friday, September 22, 2006, 16-year-old Cassie Jo Stoddart was housesitting for her aunt and uncle when she was brutally attacked and murdered in the home. Police quickly narrowed in on 2 of Cassie's classmates, Brian Draper and Torey Adamcik, as the prime suspects in the crime. It was later discovered that Brian and Torey had extensively planned Cassie's murder and the two were planning on continuing their killing spree if they had not been caught. In October of 2018, dismembered remains of a male body started turning up along the highway in Ohio. At the same time, a 39-year-old father from Michigan was reported missing by his family. When the disappearance and the scattered remains were found to be linked, his family had only one potential suspect in mind. 19-year-old Miranda Barbour was a troubled girl who had a dark past including abuse as a toddler, drug abuse, and satanic cult involvement who seemingly had turned her life around when she moved to North Carolina with her uncle in 2012. She gave birth to a baby girl, got a job, and even began taking college courses, until she met 21-year-old Elytte Barbour. He and Miranda left their lives in North Carolina and moved to Sunbury, Pennsylvania where they made ends meet with the money Miranda earned on Craigslist for providing companionship to lonely men. On November 1, 2013, 42-year-old Troy LaFerrara replied to Miranda Barbour's Craigslist ad claiming she would provide 'companionship' to men for a fee. What he didn't know was that Miranda and her husband, Elytte had been planning to murder someone they met on Craiglist, as they thought the murder would "bring them closer together." With claims she had murdered 21 others, and did so because they were "bad people who didn't deserve to be here, anymore," she has been deemed the "Craiglist Killer" and "Dexter Killer" but none of these claims have been verified aside from the murder of Troy LaFerrara. Junko Furuta, a 17-year-old student living in Misato, Saitama Prefecture, Japan was beautiful, popular, and a great student who her friends endearingly called 'Jun-Chan'. Junko did not smoke, drink, or participate in any "bad teenage behavior" which is why she was often called a good girl. Her beauty and kindness unfortunately caught the eye of the school bully, 18-year-old Hiroshi Miyano. When Hiroshi asked Junko on a date, she politely declined, and did not realize this would ultimately lead to her final 44 days of life involving the most horrendous, inhumane torture. Hiroshi and his friend, Nobuharu Minato devised a plan to kidnap Junko as she was biking home from work. They captured her, and four friends (Hiroshi Miyano, Nobuharu Minato, Jo Ogura, and Yasushi Watanabe)  held her hostage for 44 days at Minato's parents' vacation home before finally being murdered. The suffering Junko endured at the hands of these four boys and others was so cruel that it's hard to fathom how four teenage boys, let alone any monster, could dream up and enact such a plan. In August of 1983, a 20-year-old woman working as a cocktail waitress and a DJ was found strangled to death in a vacant field in Texas. When police began investigating her murder, they released the sketch of a mystery man they called “the cowboy”, hoping someone could identify him. In 2017, an aspiring teenage artist was invited to come out to an art college in Florida for a personalized tour of their campus. They told him to bring along some of his best artwork to show the staff, and so the teen decided he would make a special papier-mâché mask just for the occasion. After it was complete, he packed it up, along with his other things, and then he got ready to board a bus bound for Florida. Donald “Pee Wee” Gaskins's last victim was an inmate on death row in the Central Correctional Institution Prison in Columbia South Carolina. Pee Wee was a man who had an urge to kill, trying to compensate for his small stature. He killed many other victims, but claimed to kill even more than police were able to discover. Jimmy's parents paid for Rhonda to go to nursing school. By 2003, their marriage was falling apart, but they continued to live in the same house while Rhonda was finished school. One morning, Rhonda awoke and ran to the neighbor's house screaming for help, saying her house was on fire and her husband was trapped inside. Jimmy used a wheelchair to get around due to a childhood illness that caused his legs to be extremely weak. In Episode 7, Bolton and Grace recap the 2013 movie, The Frozen Ground, and discuss the facts of the true crime story that the movie is based on. The movie was written and directed by Scott Walker. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Alaskan State Trooper Sergeant Jack Halcombe, Vanessa Hudgens as survivor-hero Cindy Paulson, and John Cusack as serial killer Robert Hansen. The film focuses on serial killer Robert Hansen’s rampage against women and girls in the Anchorage area, and how survivor Cindy Paulson helped law enforcement apprehend Hansen and discover the extent of his crimes. The Frozen Ground provides insight into how Hansen was able to get away with his crimes for so long, and does a great job of highlighting the important role Cindy Paulson played in his eventual apprehension. This movie has some scenes that are tough to watch, and may be especially triggering for survivors of sex trafficking and/or sexual assault.
