Entertainment vs Unsportsmanlike (0:00)Ben Askren addresses a main news story that wasn't brought up last podcast, Austin Desanto's antics, and suspension. Matt Dernlan's take on what happened at the Nebraska dual is that it was kind of justified. Earlier in the dual, after a sudden victory win, Tyler Berger went over to the Iowa bench and blew them a kiss while saying "This is my house". Dernlan believes Desanto's similar actions don't justify the harsh reaction of the public. This is the third time Desanto has been hit with team point deductions. Once you get a reputation, people start watching and waiting to overreact. Tuesday the news broke that Desanto will serve a one-game suspension and not wrestle in the upcoming dual against Maryland.Sam Stoll (04:15)Iowa's Sam Stoll was upset by Nebraska's David Jensen 3-0. Askren and Dernlan agree that since Stoll's knee injury he hasn't been quite the same. Askren questions if a loss like this is a sign that Stoll won't place in March.Alex Marinelli vs Isaiah White (11:15)At 165 lbs Marinelli captured a win over Isaiah White 3-0. Dernlan relates this matchup to a lot of the matches that took place between Michigan and Penn State. It was really close but Dernlan doesn't see White beating Marinelli this season. Askren advises White to not choose bottom against Marinelli.Tough Matchups and Injuries (13:00)Iowa vs Oklahoma State and Ohio State vs Cornell are tough matchups to end the season. Dernlan questions if this is a good thing for a team heading into the finals or if it makes it harder. You do have a two-week break before conferences but traveling can be hard for the away teams. Joey McKenna was sidelined with an undisclosed injury. Askren questions Dernlan to see if he has any inside information if McKenna will wrestle against Penn State. It brings up the topic that with only 6 weeks until the NCAA tournament it's important to heal up and not risk further injury. Playing on the side of caution gets more important the closer you get to the end of the season.Kaid Brock vs Josh Alber (24:30)Kaid Brock lost his match at 141 lbs on a last-second takedown to Josh Alber. When Brock wrestles his style it's exciting to watch. Askren thinks Brock was holding himself back in this match.Joe Smith Drops 2 (31:46)No. 5 Joe Smith lost both of his bouts over the weekend. First losing to No. 8 Taylor Lujan of UNI 5-4. He then lost to No. 6 Jordan Kutler 3-1 after getting hit with a hands-to-the-face call. Dernlan thinks Smith wrestled to the style of his opponents and got caught up not being active. After such an impressive performance at the Southern Scuffle, it was easy to believe Smith could really be dangerous for the top-ranked guys. After a weekend like this, maybe those predictions were premature.Fast Predictions (37:27)Askren is heading down to Columbus to do a live broadcast of the RUDIS Wrestling Podcast with Dernlan for the Ohio State vs Penn State dual. The pair goes through the matchups and makes quick predictions on who they think will win. 125: Ohio State, 133: Ohio State 141: Ohio State 149: Ohio State 157: Penn State 165: Penn State 174: Penn State 184: Ohio State 197: Ohio State 285: Penn State.

It is never too early to look at the upcoming NCAA wrestling season on Matside. On Monday, the Iowa Hawkeyes picked up yet another top-100 commit as Abe Assad announced his intentions. To discuss the Hawkeye's recent momentum, Richard Mann chats with the proprietor the Iowa Wrestling Fan Blog, Todd Conner. Richard and Todd discuss Iowa's recent success on the recruiting trail, the status of Sam Stoll, the impact of transfer Austin DeSanto, Michael Kemmerer potentially moving up to 174 pounds and what the Hawkeyes need to do to contend for a national title. Jim & Trent open up the show talking some baseball including a loss from the Cubs and the rain from last night, then a gun shot injury for Hawkeye heavyweight Sam Stoll. Next, Alex Halsted from Cyclone Alert stops in to give his perspective on football and basketball recruiting and what he's seen in the Cap City League. Finally, Scott Phillips from NBC Sports drops in to take a look at the NBA Draft coming up on Thursday night.
Tonight, we'll take you to the Temple of Boom as I spent the time setting up this show listening to the mashup between Cypress Hill, Rage Against The Machine and Public Enemy -- they're the Prophets of Rage and it's just enough of a taste of all three groups to give you that angsty fight the man feeling from the late 90s. This is Short Time Shots, a look back at the day's scores and more for February 10, 2018, I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant and I actually saw Rage perform live back in August of 1997. We can tell you that the women's team at Campbellsville will be going down Rodeo after capturing the school's first ever Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association national championship on Saturday at Oklahoma City University. Powered by champions Grace Bullen and Kayla Miracle, the Lady Tigers took things down to the wire to rip the championship away from Simon Fraser in the event's final match. The stage was set for some drama as the finals round started at 143 pounds and would end with 136, where Miracle would wait to see if she could make history. More on that in a bit. Simon Fraser earned titles at 143 with U.S. World Teamer Mallory Velte winning her third WCWA title with a dominant win over Junior World bronze medalist Alexis Porter of McKendree. Brittany Marshall would Fight the Power and give Wayland Baptist a title with a 6-5 victory at 170 over Campbellsville's Mariah Harris. Marshall scored two as time expired to cap an exciting bout. Simon Fraser would overtake Campbellsville with back-to-back titles at 116 and 123. At 116, Abby Lloyd capped her career winning her first WCWA title after finishing second the previous two years. At 123, Dominique Parrish topped unseeded teammate Alex Hedrick 5-4 to claim gold. With two weights left, Campbellsville and Simon Fraser would meet up at 130 with SFU holding a seven point lead. The lead would shrink to one as freshman Grace Bullen, a Norwegian import, laid down another bombtrack pinning Nicole Depa in 2:17 seconds. Miracle would then step to the mat, with her chance at four titles and the team title on the line. She gave up the first takedown to Grays Harbor's Desiree Zavala, but then used a leg turk to arch Zavala over for the fall. MIC. DROP. CHAMPIONSHIP. Lights out. Guerilla Radio. Miracle joins exclusive company, joining Oklahoma City's Emily Webster and Simon Fraser's Victoria Anthony and Helen Maroulis as four-time WCWA champs. Maroulis actually won her first title at Missouri Baptist. There were also a number of emotional moments, including Kaitlyn Hill finally earning All-American honors for the first time and then promptly getting hit with a marriage proposal. Get the tissues folks. It's one of those moments that you just can't put into words. Marina Doi's shot for a third individual championship came to an end, as her twin sister Regina would claim the title at 101 poun ds. But the California wonder twins also made this moment distinctly theirs. You see, Marina had previous won two titles but the sisters had a goal to meet each other in the finals when they decided to attend King. That happened this year and Marina forfeited to her sister, giving Regina her first title. The pair then placed their shoes on the mat, signifying their retirement from wrestling. Emmanuel's Cody Pfau would Take the Power Back, winning her third title and first for her new school. She'd previous won two titles at Oklahoma City. Lindenwood-Belleville's Niauni Hill finished an undefeated season with a title at 155 pounds. Paige Baynes of Grays Harbor would be the OW, earning the title at 191 pounds. She teched all four opponents in a combined 3:32. Moving over to the men's side of things, there was enough to talk about at an indoor record crowd of 15,998 saw No. 1 Penn State top No. 7 Iowa 28-13 at a sold-out Bryce Jordan Center. The most notable win of the dual came in Iowa's favor, as it was Bulls on Parade -- or just BULL as Alex Marinelli defended a Vincenzo Joseph inside trip attempt and body-locked the returning NCAA champion to his back for a six-point sequence leading to Marinell's win at 165. Marinelli is still unbeaten as a freshman. It gave Iowa a shred of life -- that is until Mark Hall and Bo Nicka l scored back-to-back falls in a minute or less to slam the door on any Hawkeye comeback hopes. Nick Nevills topped Sam Stoll at heavyweight, while Zain Retherford controlled Brandon Sorensen at 149 pounds. No. 10 Cornell beat Penn 33-9 and Princeton 34-6 to claim yet another regular season Ivy League championship. One notable came against Princeton where super freshman Ben Darmstadt rallied in the third period to beat Princeton's Pat Brucki. Darmstadt trailed by two before getting a reversal, a penalty point for stalling and two nearfall to earn a 9-6 victory. No. 13 Northern Iowa packed West Gym to the rafters and beat Iowa State 31-7 in the first meeting between the two teams as members of the Big 12. UNI joined the conference this season as an affiliate member after spending the last five years in the MAC. Also around DI, Oklahoma beat Edinboro 19-16, Penn topped Columbia 21-18 and Stanford beat Oregon State 22-15. Amar Dhesi with an 8-5 win over Nathan Butler at heavyweight there. Davidson won its second dual in a row, beating Division II Belmont Abbey 25-16. In Division III, there were a host of conference tournaments before we get to the regional qualifying weekend coming up, but there are two notables I want to throw out here. The first comes from the Rochester Institute of Technology, or RIT where freshman Kaidon Winters broke Matt Hamill's single season school record for falls. YES, THAT Matt Hamill, the guy who won three Division III titles for the Tigers and the deaf guy who fought in the UFC and is in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for the medal of courage. Kaidon Winters, bravo young man. He's 35-8 this year. The other milestone goes to NYU's Raymond Jazikoff. He won two matches at the UAA championships, which is just a tri-meet between the University of Chicago, Case Western Reserve and NYU. Jazikoff's two wins put him at 142 for his career, setting a new school record with still a few weeks left in the season. Jazikoff is 41-5 this year for coach Bruce Haberli's Bobcats. They're today's Renegades of Funk. GET THE GUIDE! Order the single greatest preview guide ever assembled for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships right now! On Friday night, I was set to plop down here in the office and fire out another fine episode of Short Time Shots. By the way, that's the show you're listening to and it's a look back at the day's scores and more in college wrestling. I'd also be your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant. But once my wife and I finished having some quiet time watching the most recent episode of Top Chef, I went to the Mat Talk Online headquarters and realized there were like a lot of duals last night. By the time I finished logging them into the nation's most robust college wrestling scoreboard, which you can find at almanac.mattalkonline.com, it was nearly 2 a.m. and I had to be up early Saturday to make chocolate chip pancakes for the girls. Sometimes, I just don't have the time to push out a daily scores episode. Today is different, because there were 104 dual meets that I could track on Saturday - there's a few JUCOs that won't report their results until March, but that's not important right now. It's Saturday, January 27 and here's what we had to roll with. We had two stellar top 10 duals, one in the Big Ten and another between former Big 12 rivals. Where to begin? Let's go with the place that had the bigger crowd and that would almost always be Iowa. No. 7 Michigan beat No. 4 Iowa 21-17 in front of over 10,000 fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Michigan wasn't as explosive as it was a week prior when the Wolverines trounced Minnesota. In fact, it seemed like they left a lot of potential bonus points on the table. Credit Iowa for wrestling very tough and nearly pulling out the win in a dual where they were without the services of All-American Michael Kemerer. Alex Marinelli stayed unbeaten, topping Logan Massa 3-2 at 165 pounds, but Michigan would sweep the last four weights with the biggest win coming at 197 pounds where Kevin Beazley topped Cash Wilcke 6-5. The win set up the dual-winning triumph by heavyweight Adam Coon, who beat Sam Stoll 3-2. In Stillwater, things were a bit wild and crazy, like the Wild and Crazy Kids. Anyone remember that? Chances are, if you're below the age of 32, you don't. Nickelodeon was so awesome back in the day -- You Can't Do That On Television, Double Dare, Turkey TV. Oh, speaking of things you're not supposed to do - Jaydin Eierman of Missouri decided to complicate things even more by pinning two-time national champion Dean Heil at 141 pounds in Missouri's 21-19 win over No. 5 Oklahoma State. Combine that with Willie Miklus' modest upset over Preston Weigel at 197 pounds and Brian Smith has his Tigers 16-0 and a clear No. 3 in the Coaches Poll. What's going to make things interesting in the voting this week is the fact Iowa was without Kemerer, but hey, big boy sports right - you play without your starting quarterback, you lose, you drop in the rankings. Rank it like a team sport, when you're looking at dual rankings. No. 10 Virginia Tech got quite a fight from Duke, but a fall by Zack Zavatsky at 184 pounds gave the Hokies enough breathing room to improve to 2-0 in the ACC and 12-2 overall. Zavatsky has scored 10 straight bonus point wins. He also helped the Hokies knock off Lehigh on Friday night. Cornell won two matches on the day. The Big Red beat Harvard 35-3 and Brown 27-9. The two wins give Cornell 80 straight dual meet wins in the Ivy League. Fredy Stroker saw his first action in the Cornell lineup. He split matches on the day, beating Harvard's Brock Wilson but losing to 500th-year senior Justin Staudenmayer of Brown. What's also of interest is Max Dean of Cornell beat his cousin Kanon Dean of Harvard 3-0. Last year, Max's brother Gabe beat Kanon. Must be a rather uncomfortable silence at the kids table on holidays up in Michigan. Rider has emerged as the top dog -- or in this case, horse -- in the EWL after the 19th-ranked Broncs beat 23rd-ranked Lock Haven 22-12. Let's cut right to the chase here. 165 pounds, right? Well, Chance Marsteller continued his climb up the rankings, beating two-time All-American Chad Walsh 8-4. The only other ranked team in action was No. 22 Wyoming, which beat Fresno State 40-6. Ok, let's just get this out of the way, Dewey Krueger is the Jose Oquendo of college wrestling. Don't know who Jose Oquendo is? Look it up. Or don't. The guy was the ultimate utility man in baseball. He could play every position, and over the course of his major league career, he did. Last week, Krueger weighed in at 157 and yes, won by fall at 197. On Saturday, he got another victory, this time at 184 pounds. If Missouri would have been able to borrow him, I'm sure Brian Smith would have thrown HIM out there at heavyweight. Other things in the Division I world that you SHOULD be paying attention to - Binghamton improved to 8-4 and they stand at 5-0 in the EIWA, which is technically in first place. Cornell is 3-0 in conference, but 5-0 is greater than 3-0. Today the Bearcats beat Penn 19-18 and Drexel 21-12 to complete the cheesesteak sweep. That's one helluva job interim head coach Kyle Borshoff has done since taking over the program earlier this season. Sometimes those types of teams can just fall apart with a mid-season coaching change. That loss pretty much seals Drexel's fate from getting ranked this season. But yes, the Dragons did wrestle without Austin DeSanto, but what did we say earlier about wrestling with who you've got? Oh, by the way, that Bell's Hopslam I was talking about the other night? Yeah, pine tree juice. I got about two swigs into it and went NOPE. You can keep your double imperial death star IPAs. I like some hops, but mother of all that's holy, yes, it tasted like stoned cat Christmas tree urine. But hey, I guess some people like that, but I ain't them people. Hofstra's been catching some hell, but the Pride today picked up a good 22-17 win over Buffalo after falling behind 14-0 early on. Dennis Papadatos - the best hair product game in college wrestling. Navy won the All-Academy championships hosted in Charleston, South Cackalacky by The Citadel. The Mids won six individual titles and Jadaen Bernstein was the outstanding wrestler of the event. Army West Point was second. That wraps up our Division I recap, all those scores and more again, at almanac.mattalkonline.com. Speaking of Division I, you know I've talked about the best, most awesome, stellar, bodacious NCAA Division I preview guide? Well, it's available for pre-order now by going to mattalkonline.com/fanguide18. Use the offer code "podcast" and save yourself $5. Trust me, it's the ONE thing you need going into Cleveland this year. Yeah, you don't need clothes, but you need this digital preview guide. In other places around the country, Grand View won its 64th dual in a row. The Vikings beat second-ranked Missouri Valley on Friday before finishing up the conference dual schedule with a 31-16 win over No. 14 Baker. Grand View hasn't lost a dual since 2013. They've only lost NINE in school history. This is the 10th year of the program. Ashland went 6-0 at the Midwest Duals hosted by Belmont Abbey, which isn't exactly in the Midwest, it's in North Carolina. Four of those wins came on Saturday. Bellarmine earned its first two conference victories in school history. What's interesting is Bellarmine, which is in Louisville, Kentucky, started a wrestling program by absorbing what was left of the program at St. Catherine's, which closed its entire school two years ago. The Knights beat Truman State and Drury. Tiffin also picked up four wins on the day, beating Queens, Belmont Abbey, Coker and Limestone. Western State Colorado upset No. 10 Central Oklahoma 26-18 in a single dual, while in Division III, we had multiple wins registered by a slew of teams as quads were aplenty. Centenary, Johnson & Wales, TCNJ, NYU, Gettysburg and York -- the one in Pennsylvania -- all had successful dual days. Earlier this month, the namesake of the Pete Willson Invitational, former Wheaton coach Pete Willson passed away. The tournament named in his honor is like the Southern Scuffle or Midlands of Division III. On Saturday, Messiah put five in the finals and outdistanced second-place Mount Union to claim the team championship. The most impressive performances were turned in by 125-pound champion Carlos Fuentes of Wheaton, who beat Baldwin Wallace's Chris Doyle 12-3 in the finals. Mount Union's Jairod James knocked off 2016 Division III champion Ben Swarr 6-4 in the finals at 174 pounds. And UW-La Crosse's Wesley Schultz pinned Messiah All-American Kyle Koser in a minute in the 197-pound final. The tournament showed good individual balance as eight different teams won individual titles, led by Messiah's three -- Stephen Maloney at 149, Kevin Edwards at 157 and Jeff Hojnacki at 165. There was one thing my wife asked me NOT to do on this episode of Short Time Shots -- and that's talk about the Minnesota Vikings. It's pretty hard when the three most important women in our life, my wife and my two young daughters Lucy and Ruby are decked out in purple and you see what happens when your five-year-old realizes what losing is, as she's wrapped up in a Vikings blanket my mom made her. Sadly, the Vikings faithful are used to heartbreak. This is one reason I'm trying to at least salvage Ruby, the youngest to be a Bucs fan. You see, I grew up a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan. I still am a diehard, although most years since 2002, I can check out around week 10, knowing the playoffs are a pipe dream. When you're a Bucs fan, there are no expectations. The Super Bowl in 2002 is an outlier, a one-off. I can die a happy man knowing what was once the worst franchise in pro sports actually has a championship. Eat that, Browns fans. This isn't a show about football, It's Short Time Shots, a look back at the day's notable college wrestling scores and more. I'm your host Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant and we've got some things to talk about today. Did you know there were 63 dual meets on Sunday? 63? Yeah. All of their results available at mattalkonline.com's college wrestling scoreboard. It's the link at the top right of the page that says "SCOREBOARD!" Or just go to almanac.mattalkonline.com to check it out. The most comprehensive scoreboard in the nation is hosted here. First off, the biggest dual of the day took place in Columbus, Ohio where second-ranked Ohio State topped fourth-ranked Iowa 22-12 in front of 15,117 fans at Value City Arena. The crowd rates 14th all-time in Division I dual meet attendance and it was the final "home" dual for Nathan Tomasello, Bo Jordan and Kyle Snyder. Two of the three didn't disappoint, that is if you're a Buckeye fan. Iowa true freshman Spencer Lee's proficient top work was enough to get him past Tomasello 3-2 at 125 pounds. Lee's two escapes and a riding time point were enough to overcome Tomasello's third-period takedown. Brandon Sorensen beat Ke-Shawn Hayes at 149, Iowa's Michael Kemerer beat Micah Jordan at 157, Alex Marinelli returned home to Ohio to beat TeShan Campbell at 165, but then it was all Buckeyes. Bo Jordan, Myles Martin, Kollin Moore and Kyle Snyder swept the last four weights to keep Ohio State unbeaten. Questions circling about why Iowa, which needed a fall to win the dual, didn't sent out Sam Stoll at 285 and sent Steven Holloway out instead to take on the World and Olympic Champion. You guys can discuss that all you want. If you're a Hawkeye fan, you think one way. Most everyone else thinks another. It is what it is. I wanted to see where Sam Stoll was at. I guess we'll have to wait until the grind of the Big Ten tournament to find out. In ranking order, top-ranked Penn State had little trouble staying unbeaten with a 47-3 plundering of Maryland. The Nittany Lions scored six falls, including five in a row -- take a guess where -- to improve to 9-0 on the year. Best match of the dual was at heavy where Nick Nevills beat Youssif Hemida 4-1 in an upset on paper, depending on which rankings you prefer. Fifth-ranked Oklahoma State smashed Kent State 42-3, while seventh-ranked Lehigh got back on track with a 30-6 win over Army West Point. By the way, Army and Navy both wrestled on Sunday, while the government shutdown impacted the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the Air Force Academy. So I asked Navy assistant Nate Engel why the Midshipmen and Black Knights wrestled today and he was explaining that the athletic departments are non-profits and aren't technically owned by the government. Air Force set their department up this way recently, but apparently don't have enough in their coffers to YET operate the way the other two major service academies do. Now, I don't have 100 percent confirmation on this -- but apparently neither does the House or the Senate. Too soon? I was at the Maturi Pavilion on Sunday afternoon watching No. 8 Michigan beat the everloving crap out of Minnesota. Let's make this clear, the Gophers are NOT a bad team. Michigan just beat them everywhere. The Gophers' lone bright spot was Nick Wanzek, who beat Logan Massa 14-8 at 165 pounds. Other than that, the Wolverines just out-hustled and out-wrestled the Gophers to the tune of a 30-7 win. Stevan Micic packed Mitch McKee with a cradle at 133 pounds. Virginia Tech went up to Pitt and beat the Panthers 31-10. Good win by B.C. "The Headache Powder" LaPrade at 157 pounds, he beat Taleb Rahmani. Yes, B.C. gets a bit of a push here on the show because the kid is from my home district. South Dakota State's Connor Brown picked up a gigantic fall to start off the dual against Northern Iowa and the 15th-ranked Jackrabbits are sure to move up in the rankings after a 22-16 win over No. 11 Northern Iowa in front of over 1,200 fans in Frost Arena on Sunday. In case you're wondering, South Dakota State's highest Division I ranking all-time is 15, which is where they stand as of now. Nebraska rallied past Rutgers 19-13 in Lincoln, while Rider stopped Edinboro's 24-match EWL winning streak with a 21-15 win over the Fighting Scots. Elsewhere, Appalachian State improved to 3-0 in the SoCon with a 30-9 win over SIU Edwardsville, Oklahoma beat Northern Colorado 28-10 in front of nearly 5,000 fans at a Beauty and the Beast tandem match with gymnastics, Iowa State beat West Virginia 25-17. Sam Colbray FINALLY won a big match, beating Jake Smith at 197 pounds. Colbray has struggled mightily this season. Tip of the cap to Bloomsburg, which beat VMI and Sacred Heart at home on Sunday. Duke's Jacob Kasper picked up a fall at 285 pounds to give Duke a 23-22 win over Navy in Durham. Kasper's fall tied the score, but Duke won the dual on the second criteria, most number of six point victories -- and Kasper's fall was the difference maker at the end. Campbell beat Gardner-Webb 31-7, Chattanooga topped The Citadel 38-7, Clarion blanked George Mason 48-0 and Old Dominion beat American 27-10. Outside of Division I, Central Oklahoma beat Lindenwood 32-13, while Johnson & Wales went 4-0 to win the New England Duals. The Wildcats beat intra-state rival Roger Williams 20-15. Friday night and I’ve gotta catch a flight to New York in a few hours. By the time you hear this, I’ll be snoozing away hoping a drink cart doesn’t slam into my knee or elbow. I’m Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a look back at the day’s scores and more from the world of wrestling. Before we get into the dual meet action, there’s a pretty good little tournament going on in California, the California Community College state championships. Fresno City leads after the first day of competition with eight wrestlers reaching the semifinals and leading second-place Mt. San Antonio College 98.5 to 80.5. Cerritos is a distant third with 54.5. All those results are at trackwrestling.com and check out John Sachs’ tech-fall.com for photos from the event. Count the tattoos, you’ll be there a while. Rutgers fans showed up in force, setting a school-record for attendance with 6,754 fans at the RAC, but key wins by Alex Marinelli at 165 and Joey Gunther at 174 lifted seventh-ranked Iowa to a 23-15 win over upset-minded Rutgers on Friday. Iowa won its 23rd straight conference road dual and improved to 4-0 all-time against the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers jumped out to a 12-0 lead after wins by Nick Suriano, Scott Delvechhio and Mike Van Brill, but then the strength of Iowa’s middle weights shone through, including Marinelli’s first dual meet victory coming against U23 World Champion Richie Lewis, who went up a weight from his expected competition weight of 157 pounds. Gunther fell behind early but a third-period takedown in the final minute plus riding time was the difference as he snatched away a victory from Joe Grello.5-4. Nick Gravina gave Rutgers it’s last lead of the bout with a win over Mitch Bowman at 184 before Cashtag Wilke and Sam Stoll closed the door on Rutgers’ upset hopes. Stoll finished off Razohnn Gross in 2:40 to end it. Nate Rotert’s major decision at 197 pounds and Alex Macki’s 7-5 win at 285 pounds broke a 16-16 tie and lifted No. 16 South Dakota State past No. 18 Central Michigan 23-16 in Brookings. South Dakota State’s Seth Gross continued to put up big numbers, earning a 16-2 major decision at 133 pounds, while 174-pounder David Kocher notched a convincing 10-5 win over C.J. Brucki in one of the dual’s key swing bouts. South Dakota State improved to 4-2. Navy dropped the first two bouts to Drexel, but stormed back to win seven of the next eight to power the Midshipmen to a 22-13 win over previously unbeaten Drexel. The Austin DeSanto watch is in full effect though, but he ONLY scored 13 points in a 13-6 win at 133. Solid wins checked in for Navy’s Nick Gil at 141 and Jadaen Bernstein at 174. By the way, Army-Navy football this weekend -- who you got? Michigan State went on the road and got past Buffalo of the MAC 17-16 on criteria three. True freshman RayVon Foley notched the biggest individual victory for the Spartans, an 8-6 victory in sudden victory over NCAA qualifier Kyle Akins at 125 pounds. Two major decisions were also key as Michigan State did lose a team point during the course of the dual. Overall, it was total match points that gave the Spartans the W. Fresno State put 3,700 fans in the seats on Friday night, but CSU Bakersfield won eight of the 10 matches as the Central Valley wrestling rivalry was rekindled. Sacred Heart won its first dual of the John Clark era, topping undermanned American International, a Division II school, 50-6. Eastern Michigan beat Cleveland State 29-13. In Division II, 10th-ranked Ashland topped West Liberty 24-13. Back to back falls in the middle by Bret Romanzak and Christian Price gave the Eagles some breathing room and wins by Tristen Wirich and Luke Cramer finished the dual off. Coker beat Emmanuel 21-11 in an ECAC matchup. Coker won the last four weight classes to earn the win over the Lions, who are actually searching for a head coach at the moment. Top-ranked Warburg, at least top-ranked for now, beat Cornell College 45-3. Eight of the nine victories were by bonus including falls by Bennen Doebel, Mike Ross and All-American Lance Evans. Sixth-ranked Messiah cruised past in-state rival Gettysburg 38-3. This one always stings for Gettysburg head coach Andy Vogel, who wrestled at Messiah. Yeah, the Falcons are pretty good typically. Mustache power was apparently the key for Heidelberg to knock off John Carroll 22-16 in Division III. Heidelberg, which if you may remember from the first editions of Short Time, is the STUDENT PRINCES. Wins by Patrick Brown, Tyler Hammack and Christan Climer at the upper weights gave Heidelberg 13 key points and the come-from-behind victory. Hammack earned the dual’s only fall in 92 seconds. No. 17 UW-La Crosse thumped Luther 34-4. Keep an eye on La Crosse 125-pounder Zach Villareal. He’s off to a real solid start . 14-0 with 11 bonus victories and eight falls. Illinois kid, contender. Mixing things up between divisions, we saw Division II Limestone get past a scrappy Southeastern University squad 21-16. Northwest Kansas Tech from the NJCAA upended NAIA Concordia of Nebraska 23-21. Cloud County won its first dual in program history with a 40-18 win over NAIA Central Christian. Also in the junior college ranks, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M swept Labette and Northwest College in a tri-meet on Friday night. The Karstetter brothers had a good night, going 4-0 as they combined for four bonus victories -- two techs, a major and a fall. NEO topped Labette 51-6, while they topped Northwest 47-4. The lone win for Northwest? Yup, Nodir Safarav, the Uzbek import. The big news in college wrestling is of course the wonderful world of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. There’s a lot to watch and with 20 different schools represented in the semifinals, it’ll sure to be a good Saturday of wrestling. Thanks to Earl Smith for that stat, I’m Jason Bryant and this is Short Time Shots, a semi-daily look around the world of college wrestling. Michigan leads the CKLV after the first day. Ohio State’s in second place followed by Nebraska, Arizona State and Northern Iowa. Michigan put five wrestlers into the semifinals, while Ohio State put six. Nebraska and UNI each have four. As always, the Cliff Keen provides then ranking public some major headaches as upsets are plentiful. At 125 pounds, a pair of All-Americans fell as returning NCAA runner-up Ethan Lizak was knocked off 4-3 in the quarterfinals by Utah Valley’s Taylor LaMont. Jay Schwarm of Northern Iowa avenged a loss earlier in the day to Cornell’s Mike Russo and Schwarm then beat Arizona State’s Ryan Millhof to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Boise State transfer and past JUCO All-American Will Bardezbain of Kent State topped North Carolina’s Dalton Macri 18-15 in the Round of 16. Josh Terao of American is the lowest seed to reach the semifinals at 133 pounds. The Eagle topped No. 2 seed Dom Forys of Pittsburgh 6-3 in the quarters. He’ll face Jack Mueller of Virginia, who defeated 11th-seeded Austin DeSanto of Drexel in the other bottom bracket quarter. Up top, It’s a Michigan-Ohio State semi with top-seeded Stevan Micic set to face off with Ohio State’s Luke Pletcher. Pletcher survived a scare in a first-round tiebreaker win over Ben Thornton of Purdue. At 141, two-time All-American Bryce Meredith of Wyoming will give Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis his first test in the semifinals. Down low, it’ll be a Chad Red-Josh Alber semifinal. Nebraska’s Red topped Eli Stickley of Wisconsin 7-5 in the quarters while Northern Iowa’s Alber upended Tommy “The Cat” Thorn of Minnesota 4-3. Top upset of that bracket came as Pitt’s Nick Zanetta beat No. 4 seed Javier Gasca of Michigan State in the pigtails. At 149, a modest upset saw North Carolina’s Troy Heilmann go all South Plainfield on Ke-Shawn Hayes of Ohio State. Heilmann beat Hayes after falling behind 6-0 in the first period. Heilmann will face All-American Max Thomsen of UNI in the top bracket semi, while Justin Oliver of Central Michigan will face 900-year-old Colton McCrystal of Nebraska in the bottom bracket semi. McCrystal saw a huge lead evaporate in the quarters, but held on to beat Zander Wick 11-10. I found out Mr. Wick’s secret internet password -- it’s Mister Wick! Drew Carey Show reference if you’re wondering. At 157, top-seeded Tyler Berger of Nebraska looked uninspiring, but he got the job done reaching the semifinals. He’ll face All-American Alec Pantaleo of Michigan. Pantaleo pinned North Dakota State’s Clay “I’m a lot smarter than you” Ream in 1:09. We’ll see a rematch of an earlier dual this year in the bottom bracket semi as Arizona State’s Josh Shields will face Ohio State’s Micah Jordan. Michigan’s Logan Massa fell 8-4 to the other Wick twin, Evan, 8-4 in the quarters at 165 pounds. Wick scored a third-period escape and a takedown and added a riding time point to beat the returning All-American. Down low, TeShan Campbell of Ohio State will face All-American David McFadden of Virginia Tech. Campbell beat Nebraska’s Isaiah White, last year’s Division II champion, 3-1. Nick Wanzek of Minnesota survived a scare in the Round of 16 and then used riding time to outlast Anthony Valencia. He’s got Wick next. Anyone else getting a Monty Python reference at all? 1-2-3-5 here in the semis at 174 pounds. Arizona State’s Zahid Valenica is beast mode right now. He’ll face a dangerous Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa in the semifinals. Lujan pinned Jaeden Bernstein of Navy in under a minute, while it’s that whole Michigan-Ohio State thing again, the state up north against that state down south with Myles Amine facing off with Bo Jordan. At 184, Nebraska’s Taylor Venz is the story thus far. The No. 13 seed pinned All-American Drew Foster of Northern Iowa and then did the whole pin thing again against No. 5 seed Jordan Ellingwood of Central Michigan to reach the semifinals. He’ll face two-time All-American Myles Martin of Ohio State in the semis. Down low, it’s a 2-3 matchup with Virginia Tech’s Zack Zavatsky meeting up with Michigan’s Domenic Abounader. Nothing super crazy in the rest of the weight. Top-seeded Kollin Moore of Ohio State was less than stellar in three early-round wins, but in the quarters, he picked it up, majoring Wisconsin’s Hunter Ritter to reach the semifinals. He’ll face CSU Bakersfield’s Matt Williams. Williams topped Northern Colorado’s Jacob Seely 8-1 in the quarters. Down low, things got messy. Second-seeded Jared Haught of Virginia Tech reached the semis without incident, but his opponent is unseeded Stephen Lioseau of Drexel. Lancaster Catholic REPRESENT! Loiseau beat Purdue’ s Christian Brunner in his opening round bout and then beat Cal Poly’s Tom Lane, who’d majored All-American Kevin Beazley of Michigan in the previous round. There’s more on that Drexel team than just a true freshman, folks. At heavyweight, the only sizeable -- get it? Sizeable? Heavyweights? Yeah, Purdue’s Shawn Streck beat No. 4 seed Ryan Solomon of Pittsburgh early, but Streck was beaten in the semis by Stanford’s Nathan Butler. Butler will face the hulking Fowlerville, Michigan native Adam Coon. Down low, it’s the People’s Champ Jacob Kasper of Duke meeting up with college wrestling’s oldest heavyweight, Tanner Hall of Arizona State in a battle of All-Americans. Brackets and video is all at Flowrestling. You wrestle with who you’ve got and right now, Lock Haven’s got a few guys who like to score bonus points. Friday proved to be the biggest win to date of Scott Moore’s head coaching career as Lock Haven scored four bonus victories in five wins to upend No. 11 Rutgers in front of 2,300-plus fans at Thomas Field House in Mat Town. Key victories were registered by Ronnie Perry over Eleazar DeLuca at 149 pounds, Chance Marsteller over John Van Brill at 165 and Thomas Haines, who delivered the match-ending fall at heavyweight over Razohnn Gross in just 43 seconds. Lock Haven -- the Bald Eagles soaring. Unranked Princeton tried to make it interesting at Jadwin Gym, but No. 5 Lehigh was too much as late wins by Jordan Kutler and Ryan Preisch slammed the door on the Tigers 25-13. Scotty Parker picked up another fall at 133 pounds for the Mountain Hawks, giving him three straight wins by fall. Six more and he’ll tie Shute. Seventh-ranked Iowa escaped with an 18-17 win over No. 15 Illinois at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday night. Sam Stoll was the hero as he literally fell into a fortuitous position as Illinois heavyweight Deuce Rachal tried to throw the GRECO Junior world medalist and ended up on his back and stuck to give Iowa the come-from-behind victory. Pretty gross dual all the way around though. Isaiah Martinez looked good, but grass is also green. No. 22 Rider topped Penn 19-15. Notable wins registered by Rider’s B.J. Clagon over Joe Velliquette and Chad Walsh over May Bethea. Heavyweight Ryan Cloud sealed the win for the Broncs with a 10-4 win at 285 over Patrik Garren. The loss was the first for the Roger Reina Head Coach of Wrestling Roger Reina since he returned to be the head coach of the Quakers, which oddly enough, is the only Ivy League team whose mascot isn’t a color or an animal. That was actually a Final Jeopardy question once. A pair of ranked foes met in Division II in an MIAA conference matchup as No. 6 Central Oklahoma topped No. 21 Fort Hays State 22-14 in Hays, Kansas. UCO won six of the 10 bouts. Fort Hays’ Conrad Cole made a statement at 125 pounds, teching No. 4 Josh Lindsey. Fourth-ranked Caleb Cotter sealed the dual for the Bronchos, that’s Bronchos with an H, kind of like Stanley, with a C. Cotter topped Dakota Gulley 6-3 at 285 to ice the win. Out in Great Falls, Montana, a mix of Division II, NAIA and junior colleges met up at the Battle of the Rockies duals. McKendree, the third-ranked team in Division II, beat host Providence -- formerly known as Great Falls, Minot State and Simon Fraser, which was ranked 12th in Divison II. Montana State-Northern from the NAIA was unbeaten, but due to NAIA rules not counting duals against non-four year schools as official bouts, the Lights -- yes, the LIGHTS -- only officially scored one win, and that was over Division II Simon Fraser. Northwest College’s Nodir Safarav went 3-0 at 125 pounds. He’s the guy who won the Dave Schultz. How someone goes from Uzbekistan to Powell, Wyoming is beyond me. In the NAIA, Baker topped Graceland 24-20. Two quick falls there delivered by Baker’s Lucas Lovvorn in 21 seconds and David Dow in 24 seconds. Baker’s the Wildcats and their from Baldwin City, Kansas. Shout out to Dan Harris. Oh, and coach Cody Garcia. Other scores from around the nation Western State Colorado beat Chadron State 30-11. Marc Antoni-Macias’ Hunter Hawks beat second-year Keystone 40-12. And Western New England topped Rhode Island College 44-2 JOIN THE TEAM And if you're a fan of the extensive and broad-based reach of the shows on the Mat Talk Podcast Network, become a TEAM MEMBER today.
