On this week's episode of You Are What You Read, we are joined by quintessential music maker and founding member of The Four Seasons, Bob Gaudio. Bob's career in music started at a young age. At the age of 15, he co-wrote his first hit, "Who Wears Short Shorts," for a group he started, The Royal Teens. His song, "Sherry," in the early '60s, launched The Four Seasons' incredible string of hits. At the time, he also began a productive and creative relationship with Bob Crewe, a teaming that produced an amazing run of hits for The Four Seasons, including "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," "Walk Like a Man," "Bye Bye Baby," "Silence Is Golden," and in 1967, Frankie Valli's classic, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You." Gaudio also produced and co-wrote with his wife, Judy Parker, "Who Loves You," for The Four Seasons and Billboard Magazine's longest-charting single (54 weeks), "December '63 (Oh, What a Night)." Bob has collaborated with Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra, and has produced albums for Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Barry Manilow, Peabo Bryson and The Beach Boys, to cite just a few. This is a conversation about Bob's greatest hits- the songs we will be tuning up this summer! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
From recreating music videos on VHS as a kid to being cast by Clint Eastwood with no callback, Erich Bergen's path in entertainment has always been uniquely his own. In this episode, he shares the early influences that sparked his creativity—like turning Brio trains into the New York subway system—and how his love of producing was hiding in plain sight even as he pursued a performance career. Erich also opens up about getting fired from Jersey Boys only to land Gossip Girl a week later, and the call that led him to originate a role in Boop! on Broadway after years of stepping into shows that had already opened. With warmth, humor, and an eye for the details that make live performance special, Erich reflects on what it means to balance ego with humility, how to protect the laughs without sacrificing story, and why the audience must always come first. This is a candid and inspiring conversation with someone who's experienced just about every twist and turn show business can offer. Erich Bergen is known for his performances as Bob Gaudio in both the Broadway and film versions of Jersey Boys, as Blake Moran in Madam Secretary, and on stage in Waitress and Chicago. He is also a producer of large-scale live events and currently stars as Raymond in Boop! The Musical on Broadway. Bob Crewe1930- 2014Inducted Into The Songwriters Hall Of Fame In 1995.While songwriter/producer/recording star, Bob Crewe, is perhaps best remembered for the notable parade of hits penned with co-writer Bob Gaudio for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, his songwriting credits began considerably earlier. In the early '50s, New Jersey-born Crewe first tasted success on the music charts with writing teammate Frank Slay with a batch of hits for a variety of artists. Among the best known were "Silhouettes" and "Daddy Cool" for The Rays; "Lah Dee Dah" and "Lucky Ladybug" for Billy and Lillie; and Freddy Cannon's "Tallahassee Lassie" and "Okefenokee."In 1961, Crewe also blossomed as a recording artist himself, with a pair of solo albums on Warwick Records. Kicks, featuring "The Whiffenpoof Song," and Crazy in the Heart, both produced by one of the more colorful producers of that time.Following these successes as a solo recording act, Crewe joined forces with songwriter Bob Gaudio, and good fortune struck almost immediately for the pair with the smash hit, "Sherry," for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Thus began a years-long association with an uninterrupted string of chart successes including "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," "Ronnie," "Walk Like a Man," "Bye Bye Baby" and "Connie 0," as well as the monumental Frankie Valli hit, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."Other Crewe and Gaudio successes include "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine," for The Walker Brothers and "Silence Is Golden" by The Tremeloes. Following this phase, Crewe moved out again on his own to form The Bob Crewe Generation ("Music to Watch Girls By"), utilizing studio musicians and original material for instrumental music collections. Bob Crewe later teamed with writer, Charles Fox, in penning the soundtrack for Dino De Laurentis' film, "Barbarella."During the mid-sixties, Bob Crewe turned discoverer, locating a band known as Billy Lee and The Rivieras, which he later re-named, Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, a major success on the charts with such Crewe-arranged smashes as "Jenny Take a Ride," "Devil With the Blue Dress On" and "Sock It to Me Baby."As the '60s were coming to a close, Crewe had also established his own recording firm, Crewe Records, which owned hits by Oliver and Lesley Gore, among others. Later, Crewe wrote and produced the song, "Eternity," which became an international hit for Vicki Carr. Following a short stay with Motown Records, when he produced what turned out to be Bobby Darin's final album, Crewe rejoined forces with Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli, and bought back from Motown the tape master for Valli's "My Eyes Adored You," a song co-written with Kenny Nolan, which became a huge new hit for Valli on Private Stock Records. The song "Lady Marmalade," another joint effort for Crewe and Nolan, went on to reach hit status and also helped re-establish Patti LaBelle as an artist of major stature.Still later, Crewe and Gaudio teamed with another writer, Jerry Corbetta, in penning the hit song "You're Looking Like Love to Me," for Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson. Crewe also collaborated with Corbetta and the writer, Ellie Greenwich, in producing the original cast album for Greenwich's Broadway musical, "Leader of the Pack."In addition to his music, Crewe also owned impressive credentials in the art world. He has designed numerous album covers and has been featured in several one-man gallery showings, including The Earl McGrath Gallery and Thomas Solomon's Garage in Los Angeles.
Tim Matthews talks with Sam Stoll, who plays Bob Gaudio in "Jersey Boys", now playing at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater.

In the early 1960s, the nation was on track to fulfill its destiny in what was being called the American Century. Baby boomers and rock & roll shared the country's optimism and energy. For one brief, shining moment in the early 1960s, both President John F. Kennedy and young people across the country were riding high. The dream of a New Frontier would soon give way, however, to a new reality involving assassinations, the Vietnam War, Cold War crises, the civil rights movement, a new feminist movement, and various culture wars. From the former host of NPR's Rock & Roll America, Richard Aquila's Rock & Roll in Kennedy's America: A Cultural History of the Early 1960s (Johns Hopkins UP, 2022) offers an in-depth look at early 1960s rock & roll, as well as an unconventional history of Kennedy's America through the lens of popular music. Based on extensive research and exclusive interviews with Dion, Bo Diddley, Brenda Lee, Martha Reeves, Pete Seeger, Bob Gaudio, Dick Clark, and other legendary figures, the book rejects the myth that Buddy Holly's death in 1959 was the day the music died. It proves that rock & roll during the early 1960s was vibrant and in tune with the history and events of this colorful era. These interviews and Aquila's research reveal unique insights and new details about politics, gender, race, ethnicity, youth culture, and everyday life. Rock & Roll in Kennedy's America recalls an important chapter in rock & roll and American history. Richard Aquila is professor emeritus of history and American studies at Penn State University and the former host of NPR's Rock & Roll America.

Maggie LePique speaks with Sinatra Archivist, Charlie Pignone about the re-release of Watertown, a 1970 concept album, newly mixed and remastered from the original Sessions tapes. Upon Watertown's release, fans and critics alike simply weren't prepared for such a radical stylistic departure from Sinatra. But the album has shown resilience: Despite the initial lukewarm response, in the decades since the album has had a re-evaluation and, in 2007, The Guardian declared Watertown “one of [Sinatra's] greatest masterpieces” and in 2015, The Observer noted that “it made some sense that Sinatra would attempt a story-driven concept album, considering he had helped pioneer the thematic concept LP in the 1950s. But on Watertown, Sinatra did something truly risky: he told an entire album-length story from the point of view of [a] character that is most definitely not Frank Sinatra.” Gaudio's essay explains that Sinatra, with a level of empathy only he could achieve, was “reaching down into a man's soul and feeling his pain and still finding hopeThe legacy of Frank Sinatra – one of the world's most enduring singers – includes a studio album no one anticipated: Watertown. Recorded in 1969 and released in 1970, the concept of Watertown unfolds as a personal tragedy about a working man with children whose wife suddenly leaves him. Sinatra's performance elicits sadness, defeat and forlornness. Ultimately, as Sinatra so wonderfully expresses, it's also a story about one man's resilience. On June 3, Frank Sinatra Enterprises and UMe present Watertown, newly mixed and remastered from the original Reprise session tapes resulting in superior sound quality. The original album sequence will be available on vinyl, while the CD and digital editions will feature eight bonus tracks, including alternate takes from the recording sessions, two radio ads and “Lady Day,” which was not part of the Watertown concept. Charles Pignone produced the updated edition from the new mixes created by longtime Sinatra engineer Larry Walsh – the team behind recent FSE/UMe releases Sings for Only the Lonely and Nice ‘N' Easy. Now appreciated as a masterpiece of drama and heartbreak, Watertown will also feature, in addition to a recreation of the original packaging, new liner notes, a track-by-track breakdown from songwriter and album producer Bob Gaudio, quotes from Sinatra, plus essays by Frankie Valli, co-writer Jake Holmes, among others who were involved in the original project. Not every Lennon and McCartney tune made its way onto a Beatles record, but that didn't mean they had to hide away gathering dust, only to be released on some future 20-disc rarities box set. The greatest songwriting duo in history also kicked some of their work over to other artists making their names in the 60s—Billy J. Heart hailed from and played in the Seattle area, but recorded this debut single in Vancouver, Canada. Dreamboat Annie appeared in Canada in the summer of 1975 and debuted in America on Valentine's Day 1976. In a male-oriented rock world the unusual sound of a female-fronted rock ensemble would both draw appeal and create friction that would drive a wedge between the group and their original Mushroom Studios label and propel them on to further success. Heart would go on to be almost a celebrity group in the MTV age of the 80's, but chafed against the insulting sexuality that the video producer's preferred.Ann Wilson is the lead singer and her sister Nancy is on guitar. Magic ManThe synth-driven track would be their second single released in both the U.S. and Canada, following different first singles in both countries. This song is about Mike Fisher, Ann's boyfriend at the time, and is somewhat autobiographical.Crazy On YouThis track would be the first single released in the U.S. Nancy's guitar work serves as a prelude to the song. This song is also about Mike Fisher, and about a culture that appeared to be falling apart with the Vietnam War, gas shortages, and other crises of the 70's. Nancy references the Moody Blues as an inspiration for this song.Soul of the SeaThis deep track is a softer, peaceful sound, again led by Nancy Wilson's guitar. It has a prog rock feel in multiple movements.Dreamboat AnnieThe album's title track is a less rock oriented and more acoustic and harmonic feel. It was released in four cuts - an acoustic version, the album version, a reprise, and a sequel. It hit number 17 on the adult contemporary chart. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series S.W.A.T. by Rhythm HeritageA radio charting track with a funky beat announced the start of the late night cop show.STAFF PICKS:“December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” by The Four SeasonsBruce's staff pick is the highest and last charting song by the Four Seasons. It hit #1 in March of 1976. The song was originally entitled "December 5th, 1933" and marked the repeal of Prohibition, but Frankie Valli persuaded keyboardist and writer Bob Gaudio to change it to a more nostalgic homage to Gaudio's affair with his soon-to-be-wife in the sixties.“Squeeze Box” by The WhoRob features the double entendre-filled hit from Pete Townshend that made it to #16 on the Billboard 100. Townshend wrote it after learning the accordion, and was surprised both that The Who recorded it, and that it was a hit.“Never Been Any Reason” by Head EastWayne's staff pick cranks up the 70's volume with this one-hit wonder. The song was recorded on their own label, as the band wanted to record this anthem their way.“Dream Weaver” by Gary WrightBrian's staff pick drifts into the Eastern-influenced music. In 1972 Wright accompanied George Harrison to India, and was inspired by the Indian culture and philosophy. Though Wright wrote the song on his guitar in about an hour, the track itself has no guitar. The song went to number 2 on the charts. COMEDY TRACK:“The White Knight” by Cledus Maggard and The Citizen's BandWe finish off this week's podcast with a CB-inspired comedy track which serves as a cautionary tale about relying too much on reports about the police from the CB radio.

Erich Bergen is visiting the Waitress diner once again as Dr. Pomatter and is here to celebrate! Bergen made his Broadway debut as the pie-loving doctor last summer and played Bob Gaudio in the first national touring production of Jersey Boys, a performance he reprised in the musical's screen adaptation. He is well-known as Blake Moran on the CBS drama Madam Secretary.Hosted by Paul Wontorek, Beth Stevens and Caitlin Moynihan
Erich Bergen loves acting and has been doing it since he was a kid. He took a job selling t-shirts at a broadway show show just to be part of the broadway machine. He started a podcast just to interview broadway stars. His mindset was that he would always be a working actor. His non-stop hard work paid off as he's played some amazing characters like Bob Gaudio in Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys, Dr. Pomatter in Waitress and more recently Blake Moran on the CBS series, Madam Secretary for the last 5 seasons. He's also a singer/song writer who's turned down multiple record labels and published his own music, most recently his latest single Better In The Dark. Erich joins ONE37pm Director of Podcasts Kal Elsebai to discuss his dedication and mindset to achieve his dreams in both acting and performing, his new music and his belief that luck is what happens when opportunity meets preparation.
My guest today is Ryan Sutton, who originally thought he was going to be a professional golfer. Fortunately, his passion for music drove him to learn many instruments, including guitar, bass, keys, and drums, and then the studio. Ryan's uncle, Bob Gaudio brought him into the studio and gave him a “masterclass” in writing and producing based on his work for some of the biggest artists of all time like Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Neil Diamond, Diana Ross, Frank Sinatra, and Michael Jackson. Bob invited Ryan to engineer and mix projects for Frankie Valli and for the Jersey Boys film soundtrack and international stage productions. Ryan also worked under producer Tedd T (MuteMath, For King & Country). Ryan also got to play on For King & Country’s 2X Grammy-winning album Run Wild, Live Free, Love Strong, as well as projects for Phil Joel (Newsboys) and Big Daddy Weave. In addition, Ryan has had the pleasure of writing and recording custom music jingles, as well as doing post-production mixes for Coca Cola, Krystal Burgers, Nike, BBC, LP Building Products, Payless Shoes, Dollar General, Backyard Burgers, Hummingbird Productions, HCA Healthcare, First Tennessee Bank, and Tennessee Housing Development Agency. Jersey Boys is by far my favorite Broadway musical. For those who are unfamiliar with Jersey Boys, you must be living under a rock! Jersey Boys was a 2005 jukebox musical with music by Bob Gaudio, and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. It is presented in a documentary-style format that dramatizes the formation, success and eventual break-up of the 1960s rock 'n' roll group The Four Seasons. The musical is structured as four "seasons", each narrated by a different member of the band who gives his own perspective on its history and music. Songs include "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Sherry", "December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)", "My Eyes Adored You", "Stay", "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", "Working My Way Back to You" and "Rag Doll", among others. Jersey Boys won four 2006 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and the 2009 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Jersey Boys was the behind the scenes story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. From the streets of New Jersey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this was the musical that rocked the world. Let’s talk about some legal issues that surfaced during the running of the musical. Specifically, there are two cases that grew out of copyright infringement claims and shook the foundation of the Jersey Boys empire. They are SOFA Ent., Inc. v. Dodger Prod. and Corbello v. DeVito. In this episode, I'll discuss each case. For those who are die-hard fans of "Jersey Boys," you will love the new musical, "A Bronx Tale" that has taken Broadway by storm.

JERSEY BOYS is the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. This is the true story of how a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. JERSEY BOYS, the winner of the 2006 Best Musical Tony Award®, is currently playing at the Keller Auditorium through Sunday, April 23. Please give a round of applause to "Jersey Boys" Matthew Dailey, Aaron De Jesus, Keith Hines and Cory Jeacoma as we welcome them to Portland and PDXISH.
In the late 50’s Bob Gaudio had been picking up studio work as as keyboardist for producer Bob Crewe. Then Crew started to use the whole Four Seasons band working as session players and singers. One night Crewe decided to take in a four seasons performance at a local New Jersey club. It was that night, on a whim, Frankie Vallei started messing around on stage mimicking Jazz Singer, Rose Murphy’s High falsetto voice. It was just a goof. Crewe heard it said that’s it: That’s the sound.

The Jersey Boys was first a successful Broadway musical and now a Clint-Eastwood-directed motion picture, based on the life and music of the Four Seasons. Almost all of the band’s hits were co-written by Seasons’ member Bob Gaudio, who had a big hand in bringing this story to the stage and screen, as well as assembling the accompanying soundtrack. Icon Fetch talks with the New Jersey native about where the idea for the Broadway musical came from. Also, he tells us the story behind the Four Seasons’ first number one hit, “Sherry,” how he recorded “Short Shorts” when he was only 15, and what it was like to work with Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond on the smash hit “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers.”

Few songs can claim to be - quite literally - as far reaching as the 1967 classic 'Can't Take My Eyes off You'. In this edition of Radio 4's 'Soul Music', we hear from former astronaut Christopher Ferguson who heard this song as an early morning wake-up call aboard the space shuttle Endeavour. And from mum of two Michelle Noakes who sang this classic piece to the baby she was told she may never be able to carry. We also hear from the honeymoon couple whose marriage proposal began with a hundred strong 'flash mob' performance of this track and from Frankie Valli himself, who reflects on one of the most moving performances he ever gave when he sang 'Can't Take My Eyes off You' to a crowd of recently returned Vietnam Veterans. DJ Mark Radcliff recalls the many artists since Valli that have covered this song (not least his mum as she sang along to the Andy Williams version) and composer Bob Gaudio tells us how this now universally famous piece of music began life in a room over looking Central Park with a melody originally penned for a children's nursery rhyme. Producer: Nicola Humphries.
