While elite athletes train themselves to push their bodies toward extremes, they're also pushing their minds to sometimes unhealthy – and even dangerous – extremes, as well. That's something wrestler Helen Maroulis found out the hard way when she was diagnosed with PTSD. Now she and Olympians like Simone Biles and Michael Phelps are changing the conversation surrounding mental health. Hosted by Molly Bloom. Produced by FilmNation Entertainment in association with Gilded Audio.
On this episode of Blindsided, we welcome Helen Maroulis. She's the first Olympic gold medalist ever for the U.S. in women's wrestling. After reaching the pinnacle of her career at the 2016 Games in Rio, Helen suffered a concussion. The effects revealed themselves over time and, she says, changed her a lot — mentally and emotionally. But she was determined to heal. Helen talks about struggling with her mental health after her injury … about losing all of her confidence right after she won the gold … and about why she considers her biggest accomplishment to be her return to wrestling. Helen came back to the sport with a new perspective. She earned a second medal this past summer at the Tokyo Olympics. It was a bronze — and without question it's the medal she's most proud of. Here's Helen Maroulis on Blindsided. *This episode contains content and topics that may be difficult for some listeners. Listener discretion is advised. We've got another Olympian guest this week: Helen Maroulis who won GOLD back in 2016 against all-time great, Saori Yoshida. Then, multiple concussions and a dark struggle with mental health put Maroulis's wrestling career on hold...or so they thought. Helen bounced back in time for the Tokyo games and medaled once more, against all odds. Hers is a story of perspective and perseverance, values she also applies to her charity work. Helen works closely with When We Band Together, a nonprofit organization that provides safe places for refugees to live and thrive. h.e.r.LIFE will be donating $1 per stream of this episode to WWBT, and if you'd like to donate on your own, you can do so at wwbt.org. Helen Maroulis became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling when she won in Rio in 2016. Not only did she break new ground for women's wrestling in the United States, it was the magnitude of victory that also impressed. To earn the gold, she beat the most dominant wrestler of all time, three-time Olympic gold medalist and thirteen-time World champion Saori Yoshida of Japan. Her career seemed full of possibilities, but a concussion suffered during a competition two years later put everything on hold. Eventually, with considerable outside help, she fought her way back. And at the recent Olympic Wrestling Trials in Fort Worth, she earned her way back on to the team headed to Tokyo, winning in a dramatic match over Jenna Burkert. In this conversation with SportsTravel Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz, we talk about Maroulis' start in wrestling, the journey to the Olympic Games, her epic comeback from her concussion and the victory at the Trials. Special thanks to one of Helen's sponsors, Procter & Gamble, for their help arranging this conversation. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The rise of women and girls in wrestling has been well-documented. From the first U.S. team sent to compete at the World Championships to Helen Maroulis' historic Olympic gold, the participation and acceptance continues to grow. On Episode 436 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we'll talk with Joan Fulp and Andrea Yamamoto, two members of USA Wrestling's Girls High School Development Committee. The goal of the committee is to work on sanctioning high school girls wrestling in every state. There have been early adopters, like Hawaii and Texas, and there are states that had great participation, but it just took a while for the approval, like California. Fulp, the widow of Hall of Fame wrestler and coach Lee Allen and mother of women's wrestlers Katherine (Fulp-Allen) Shai and Sara (Fulp-Allen) Bahoura has been around the sport since a chance meeting at Central Michigan University with a one of the national team coaching staff. Yamamoto (nee Carstens) was one of the early trailblazers in women's wrestling and coaches girls wrestling in Washington. Helen Maroulis is the 2016 Olympic Champion in Women’s Wrestling. Not only that, she’s the first woman in US history to win a gold medal. Helen has been wrestling for nineteen years and says it’s such a cool experience and everyone has been supportive. She adds when we love what we do, we will put in the work for it and don’t count the cost as much. Helen trains with a Russian coach in what he would call the beach Mother Nature’s gym throwing rocks on the beach, running in the sand, doing pull-ups on the trees, and wrestling on the beach every day. She shares what helped her focus on the gold has been a note she wrote herself which says, “Helen, anytime you want to mess up, ask yourself is it worth a gold medal and what does a gold metal taste like?”
How surrender led to making history. (41:21) Today I bring you, Helen Maroulis. Born and raised in Maryland, Helen won her first World Championship in women’s wrestling in 2015 by outscoring her opponents 35-0. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Helen became the first ever American to win a gold medal in women's freestyle wrestling at the Olympic Games. In the gold medal match, Helen defeated Saori Yoshida, a 13x world champion and 3x Olympic champion- the most successful wrestler in the history of the sport- and an opponent who’d beaten Helen twice before. Helen has truly become a legend in her own time. Tonight, we'll take you to the Temple of Boom as I spent the time setting up this show listening to the mashup between Cypress Hill, Rage Against The Machine and Public Enemy -- they're the Prophets of Rage and it's just enough of a taste of all three groups to give you that angsty fight the man feeling from the late 90s. This is Short Time Shots, a look back at the day's scores and more for February 10, 2018, I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant and I actually saw Rage perform live back in August of 1997. We can tell you that the women's team at Campbellsville will be going down Rodeo after capturing the school's first ever Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association national championship on Saturday at Oklahoma City University. Powered by champions Grace Bullen and Kayla Miracle, the Lady Tigers took things down to the wire to rip the championship away from Simon Fraser in the event's final match. The stage was set for some drama as the finals round started at 143 pounds and would end with 136, where Miracle would wait to see if she could make history. More on that in a bit. Simon Fraser earned titles at 143 with U.S. World Teamer Mallory Velte winning her third WCWA title with a dominant win over Junior World bronze medalist Alexis Porter of McKendree. Brittany Marshall would Fight the Power and give Wayland Baptist a title with a 6-5 victory at 170 over Campbellsville's Mariah Harris. Marshall scored two as time expired to cap an exciting bout. Simon Fraser would overtake Campbellsville with back-to-back titles at 116 and 123. At 116, Abby Lloyd capped her career winning her first WCWA title after finishing second the previous two years. At 123, Dominique Parrish topped unseeded teammate Alex Hedrick 5-4 to claim gold. With two weights left, Campbellsville and Simon Fraser would meet up at 130 with SFU holding a seven point lead. The lead would shrink to one as freshman Grace Bullen, a Norwegian import, laid down another bombtrack pinning Nicole Depa in 2:17 seconds. Miracle would then step to the mat, with her chance at four titles and the team title on the line. She gave up the first takedown to Grays Harbor's Desiree Zavala, but then used a leg turk to arch Zavala over for the fall. MIC. DROP. CHAMPIONSHIP. Lights out. Guerilla Radio. Miracle joins exclusive company, joining Oklahoma City's Emily Webster and Simon Fraser's Victoria Anthony and Helen Maroulis as four-time WCWA champs. Maroulis actually won her first title at Missouri Baptist. There were also a number of emotional moments, including Kaitlyn Hill finally earning All-American honors for the first time and then promptly getting hit with a marriage proposal. Get the tissues folks. It's one of those moments that you just can't put into words. Marina Doi's shot for a third individual championship came to an end, as her twin sister Regina would claim the title at 101 poun ds. But the California wonder twins also made this moment distinctly theirs. You see, Marina had previous won two titles but the sisters had a goal to meet each other in the finals when they decided to attend King. That happened this year and Marina forfeited to her sister, giving Regina her first title. The pair then placed their shoes on the mat, signifying their retirement from wrestling. Emmanuel's Cody Pfau would Take the Power Back, winning her third title and first for her new school. She'd previous won two titles at Oklahoma City. Lindenwood-Belleville's Niauni Hill finished an undefeated season with a title at 155 pounds. Paige Baynes of Grays Harbor would be the OW, earning the title at 191 pounds. She teched all four opponents in a combined 3:32. Moving over to the men's side of things, there was enough to talk about at an indoor record crowd of 15,998 saw No. 1 Penn State top No. 7 Iowa 28-13 at a sold-out Bryce Jordan Center. The most notable win of the dual came in Iowa's favor, as it was Bulls on Parade -- or just BULL as Alex Marinelli defended a Vincenzo Joseph inside trip attempt and body-locked the returning NCAA champion to his back for a six-point sequence leading to Marinell's win at 165. Marinelli is still unbeaten as a freshman. It gave Iowa a shred of life -- that is until Mark Hall and Bo Nicka l scored back-to-back falls in a minute or less to slam the door on any Hawkeye comeback hopes. Nick Nevills topped Sam Stoll at heavyweight, while Zain Retherford controlled Brandon Sorensen at 149 pounds. No. 10 Cornell beat Penn 33-9 and Princeton 34-6 to claim yet another regular season Ivy League championship. One notable came against Princeton where super freshman Ben Darmstadt rallied in the third period to beat Princeton's Pat Brucki. Darmstadt trailed by two before getting a reversal, a penalty point for stalling and two nearfall to earn a 9-6 victory. No. 13 Northern Iowa packed West Gym to the rafters and beat Iowa State 31-7 in the first meeting between the two teams as members of the Big 12. UNI joined the conference this season as an affiliate member after spending the last five years in the MAC. Also around DI, Oklahoma beat Edinboro 19-16, Penn topped Columbia 21-18 and Stanford beat Oregon State 22-15. Amar Dhesi with an 8-5 win over Nathan Butler at heavyweight there. Davidson won its second dual in a row, beating Division II Belmont Abbey 25-16. In Division III, there were a host of conference tournaments before we get to the regional qualifying weekend coming up, but there are two notables I want to throw out here. The first comes from the Rochester Institute of Technology, or RIT where freshman Kaidon Winters broke Matt Hamill's single season school record for falls. YES, THAT Matt Hamill, the guy who won three Division III titles for the Tigers and the deaf guy who fought in the UFC and is in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for the medal of courage. Kaidon Winters, bravo young man. He's 35-8 this year. The other milestone goes to NYU's Raymond Jazikoff. He won two matches at the UAA championships, which is just a tri-meet between the University of Chicago, Case Western Reserve and NYU. Jazikoff's two wins put him at 142 for his career, setting a new school record with still a few weeks left in the season. Jazikoff is 41-5 this year for coach Bruce Haberli's Bobcats. They're today's Renegades of Funk. GET THE GUIDE! Order the single greatest preview guide ever assembled for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships right now! Episode 345 is a solo show where I’m talking about some of the best memories, not all the best, but just some good and maybe some bad memories of my 19 years covering the Cadet & Junior Nationals. Below is the “show notes” which were basically the rough outline for the show Richard Immel and I were going to do from Fargo. Pardon the grammar and lack of actual respectable prose here, it was initially an outline. 1999 - First Year Was working at a KFC in the Grafton section of Yorktown, Va. Got a call from Mike Newbern. “Twink, Gary Alcon (ref) can’t make it, do you want to go to Fargo?” That right there changed it all. Everything. Stayed in Reed Johnson Hall. Virginian Christian Smith made the Cadet Freestyle finals at 83.5 pounds. He ended up being a 3x state champion and NCAA qualifier for Duke and Liberty (He took down Nickerson in 2007 to open up the tournament). There was no Buffalo Wild Wings. There was a Bison Turf, there was a mug and I may or may not have been from Alabama. Or named Kevin. Shared a dial-up line with Sara Koenig from NCMat.com (you know her now as one of the tournament directors for the Super 32. Rob Sherrill vouched for me for a media credential. Thankfully, I’d met him in Virginia at the Virginia Duals when I was in high school. Don’t remember much about the competition since I was still pretty new to the national scene. We had the Dream Team Classic in VA that year, so I paid attention to guys like Foley Dowd, Jason Powell, Clark Forward -- and two of those Team USA guys met in the finals, Damion Hahn beat Jason Potter. 2000 - Year 2 Buffalo Wild Wings Opened. Taco Bell re-opened, it was closed the year before for renovations. Harry Lester vs. Mark Jayne, Junior Greco. Jayne was returning JR. Champ, Lester won cadets the year before. 3-5-3 (BOOM). 132 pounds. Virginia had two cadet champs - Christian Staylor and Albert Childress (almost bookends) Kid named Tyler Safratowich of Minnesota won at 83.5 pounds, did a backflip, then he started eating. Mary Kelly going 2-2 in Cadet Freestyle and Micah Amrozowicz having to come from behind to beat her 8-7. 2001 - Year 3 Started doing freelance work for TheMat.com and wrote features on the Dibbern triplets, Mary Kelly wrestling against the boys in the Juniors. Cerebral Palsy kid J.C. McMaster - his e-mail address was pimp_limpin@ something another dot com. Jeff Courtney, a deaf All-American from West Virginia … and TRAVIS EFFING LEE. Lee “leis’ greco gold. Beat Nick Simmons. Stopping Simmons from becoming just the 2nd guy to win 4 JR FS titles. 2002 - Year 4 - Drove from ODU. FIRST YEAR OF FEDERATION WEIGHTS. WENT FROM 96 AAS TO 120 IN JUNIORS 104-136 Started bringing my radio equipment and doing the webcast for USAW with Rob and hte late Jon Ponwani. Cleveland - NO Chicago - Driving down Addison, game over Milwaukee - Karaoke at a Friday’s in Brookfield, WIS Minneapolis - Twins vs. Angels, MIlton vs. Washburn, preview of ALCS First year of Junior Women -- Malinda Ripley beat Mary Kelly in the finals. Who the hell is Malinda Ripley? Natasha Umemoto was 3rd. She got the first pin of the tournament ever. Poeta beat Metcalf in Cadet FS. Only finals loss in Metcalf’s Fargo career. Stepovers, if I recall correctly for exposure. Decent year from VA, Anthony Burke from my club was 5th in a bracket with coleman scott, mike rowe, garrett scott, joey slaton, Mike rodrigues, Jake Kreigbaum and Eric Albright. I thikn I had a team PA jacket on when I gave Burke a high five after beating Albright for 5th. Patrick bond won Cadet FS. Todd Meneely was the OW, beating Teyon Ware. Some guy with an Afro won Junior FS at 171. Herbert was 3rd VANS WARPED TOUR WAS OUTSIDE. 2003 - Year 5 - Drove from ODU on short notice Got up, went to Jiffy Lube and boom. Drove to Milwaukee - was using an old atlas, so I didn’t know about the cut through via Rockford and kept adding 90 more minutes to my ride. Went to the same Fridays to sing Karaoke again. Sat on top of my truck after a session and listend to a Willie Nelson concert at Newman Outdoor Stadium. All-Southern Cadet final as Nick Marable beat Ben Fiacco at 145 Cormier vs. Morrison wrestle-off. 2004 - Year 6 Rode the bus with team Virginia, wrote a blog as we went all week for the old Mat Talk. Won the Connect 4 championship on the bus, beat Josh Wine 51 consecutive times in Connect 4. Finished up my last college class two weeks after getting home. Finishing up 7 years in college. Henry Cejudo beat Spenser Manog in the Greco finals, was up 9-0 or something and thought he’d gotten the tech, then Mango bombed him for 3 (should ahve been 5) before Cejudo finished it 13-3. 2005- Year 7 - Hired at InterMat. Pretty sure I flew. Stayed at either the Econo Lodge or the Best Western near Bucks. Florida had a monster year, although I got into an “argument” with Rob Sherrill about who Franklin Gomez counted for -- Florida or Puerto Rico. I say PR, because that’s who he was representing. Robby Smith beat Cody Gardner in Freeestyle, which stunned us from VA. Justin Wren won in Greco, but when Luke Ashmore won, they all climbed over the railing to celebrate, then trying to go back, Wren got into an argument with a securitry guard and got thrown out. Couple of Wyoming kids met in the Greco finals, but one had moved to Ohio. Tyler Cox pinned David Taylor in Cadet Greco. Taylor beat BJ Futrell to win cadet FS at 91 … pounds. 2006 - Year 8 First year of the garbage rules. Hit a rainstorm coming through O’Hare and spent the night there. Connor McDonald took my spot on the last plane to Fargo from O’Hare. Then he wins the tournament. The little shit. ODU had two signees in the Fargo finals -- James Nicholson at 119 and Adam Koballa at 130. Eric Grajales bombed Donte Butler and during my inteview, Butler cut through it talking some trash. Grajales goes “I just fived you!” in response. Eli and Michaela Hutchison become first brother-sister combo to win Junior titles in the same year. 2007 - Year 9 Oregon’s Norman Richmond with the breakout perforamnce splitting finals with jason chamberlain Helen Maroulis wins a chicken, Nicole woody goes nuts. Hayden Zillmer and Jade Rauser at the same weight -- 84 pounds -- ZIllmer doubled at 84 pounds. Alton brothers, Josh Kindig from PA. Nasty. 2008 - Year 10 - Last year at InterMat Drove straight through from PA to Minnesota. Stopped in St. Cloud for about 2 hours, missed the first session. 2009 - Year 11 - Wrestling 411/USAW “That just … happened” 2010 - Year 12 - USA Wrestling F-Rod’s Triple Crown Ringer over Ness Grant LaMont makes Greco finals at Juniors as a first-year Cadet 2011 - Year 13 - USA Wrestling Parker VonEgidy makes finals with TWO losses. Ended up with 3. Situation - Abonader, VonEgidy, O’Donnell- won by Ricky Robertson Pat Downey with limited FS experience wins over Jordan Rogers at 171 2012 - Year 14 - USA Wrestling Zain vs. Zane at 132. Retherford would win cadet WC that year. Cox/Snyder - J’Den wins Freestyle, Kyle wins Greco. Brett haas wrestles them both. Willie crashed on my couch and squatted all week. Start 2013 - Year 15 - AWN/TOM Did the interviews on short notice. Elijah Oliver’s gross cauliflower ear Stephanie Hampton making fun of my clothing choices. Jake Marnin was a JV kid and won the cadet triple crown 2014 - Year 16 - Mat Talk Coltan Williams from Texas, OMG that throw in Cadet FS vs. WIlson Smith of NC Johnny Blankenship and Trey Meyer going through my table, and through me -- no STWP tonight folks. 2015 - Year 17 - Mat Talk How good those cadet champs were. Steveson, Schwartz, RBY, Raimo, Warner. Wittlake’s shoes. Interviewed the Mayor of Fargo for Short Time. 2016 - Year 18 - Mat Talk Turf burned down. Nothing else matters. 2017- Year 19 - Mat Talk To be determined. Things I can’t remember the year, but are of note. -- The year the first session was canceled because they couldn’t get the first electronic bracketing set. -- When Fargo went from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. for last call. -- Beating Kendall Cross in Foosball AND Greg Jones in Darts in the same night. -- Mike Newbern driving us to Bucks and bumping a redneck’s truck in the parking lot of a country bar, later determined it wasn’t much of a country bar. -- $2.50 domestics at the Turf. -- The Flo intern who wasn’t old enough to drink. -- The Flo intern who got his fake ID taken -- Drinking dirty martinis and playing silver strike bowling with Jeff Blatnick. -- Ted Witulski standing next to me saying “We’d like to hire him if we could finally get him to graduate” -- this might have been in 2002. -- Bucky Maughan telling me Grain Belt Premium will put hair on your balls. -- The story about how I missed the first Cormier-Morrison wrestle-off. -- Karaoke at Chumleys. -- Midget wrestling at Coaches. -- Coach from Delaware eating glass. Like chewing it up. -- Unnamed USA Wrestling intern thinking it was a good idea to go up to his HS coach at Perkins at 4 a.m. -- Unnamed USA Wrestling intern (a different one) showing up late for noon sessions because of their footwear. -- Doing a story on The Turf. -- Willie taking about an hour and a half to order lunch at B-Dubs. -- The referees chants when entering the Turf. One of the most dedicated forces to promoting wrestling globally is from Minnesota. No, he doesn't live there now, but LeSueur native Bill May has been steadily churning out news, notes and rankings for nearly four decades. May, who wrestled at St. Thomas and for the Minnesota Wrestling Club, left the U.S. decades ago and has been one of the most knowledgable wrestling journalists in the world. His career has taken him to numerous Olympic Games and World Championships and on Episode 30 of The Guillotine Grapevine, May will explain his journey from Minnesota to Japan to his home now in the Czech Republic. Bill's a fun guy and is one of the world's top experts on women's wrestling. We'll look at things beyond the sport and how the Helen Maroulis gold medal changed women's wrestling. Cierra Foster knows the impact people like Tricia Saunders have had on the sport of wrestling. On Episode 336 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Foster talks about her recent award, the Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award and the battles she's faced as a girl wrestling in an area mostly devoid of girls wrestling. Foster has a bright future and is a grounded teenager who understands the history of people like Saunders, the powerful moments like the gold won by Helen Maroulis and how her performance might be able to inspire girls in Idaho and around the country. It's Women's Wrestling Week in the U.S. and what better way to celebrate that time than with one of the most amusing women's wrestlers on the planet, Julia Salata. A four-time WCWA All-American and two-time champion for King University, Salata is in her second year on Jason Moorman's coaching staff at the Bristol, Tennessee school. We'll talk with Salata about her experience in Rio as a training partner for Adeline Gray, photobombing Ryan Seacrest, what Helen Maroulis' moment means for women's wrestling, the college scene and how fast we're adding programs and a number of topics. I'll also go into a monologue with my opinions of the National Duals matchups. Basically, I don't like them and I'll tell you why. Dozens -- maybe even hundreds of you -- have asked me: "What shirts are you wearing in your recent YouTube videos?" They're a very specific set of shirts from Rhone. I'm packing for a trip for seven to ten days, and I would say half of what I'm going to pack is from Rhone. These are the most comfortable shirts (and Rhone stocks way more than shirts) that I have ever worn -- at least for active wear. But you can even sneak them into a business casual event or dinner if you're a Long Island kid like me. Rhone has minimal branding, so you don't feel like you're walking around with some sort of billboard on your chest. They come with pure, melted-down silver in the fabric -- anti-odor technology so you don't smell like a musk ox halfway through the day. I love Rhone's shirts, pants, and shorts, and I've been wearing them pretty much every day for the past few weeks. Luckily, there's no risk in trying them out: free shipping and a 100-day return policy should help you decide if they're worth it. Episode 286 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast features the first woman in American history to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling -- Helen Maroulis. Even after winning gold in Rio over Japan juggernaut Saori Yoshida, Maroulis was back on the mat working with her coaches in California. Maroulis takes us through the busy media tours she's been on since making history in Rio in August. She'll talk about Cal Ripken Jr., The History Channel and even give her opinion on the singlet debate. Yup. We haven't gotten a woman's point of view on that one yet, have we? Maroulis is always a fun interview and a true American hero. And if you haven't already, leave a rating and a review on iTunes. With the Olympic championships won by Kyle Snyder and Helen Maroulis, there is no shortage of people who helped them attain those goals. Two of those individuals will join us today on Episode 33 of the World Wrestling Resource Podcast -- Ohio State head wrestling coach Tom Ryan and Sunkist Kids women's coach and River Falls (Wis.) High School coach Kevin Black. Black, an All-American at Wisconsin, has been a multiple-time World team coach and a past USA Women's Coach of the Year. Ryan is Snyder's head coach at Ohio State, while Black has trained Maroulis for a number of years. Both coaches talk about their secondary roles behind more visible coaches like Lou Rosselli and Valentin Kalika, at least in the international wrestling sense. They also talk about how each athlete's faith has impacted their careers was well. Two-time World Champion and four-time World medalist Adeline Gray joins the Short Time Wrestling Podcast for Episode 179 as we start catching up with our 2015 U.S. representatives for the upcoming World Championships. Gray, a Denver native, doesn't want to be one of the guys. Well-spoken and an advocate for women's wrestling, she remembers a time when young women like her didn't have women's wrestling role models because the world of women's wrestling was still developing. Now wrestlers like Gray and Helen Maroulis, get approached at tournaments by young female wrestlers eager to meet their heroes. Gray got into wrestling through her father George. With no boys to teach the armbar, George Gray showed his oldest of his four girls the move when she was six-years-old and she's still putting people away with it. Gray talks on a number of topics, including battling through some international plagues, so to speak, en route to her second World title last year in Uzbekistan. What does she want to do following wrestling? How long will she wrestle and how important is it for the U.S. and women's wrestling as a whole when America's first Olympic women's wrestling champion is crowned? Find out on Short Time.
