Rometo “Rummy” Macias wrestled at the University of Iowa in the 1940s. A two-time Big Ten champion, Macias finished second at the 1948 NCAA championships before starting the first wrestling team at what's now known as Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minnesota. The Minnesota State family celebrated Macias' birthday on October 17 as the diminutive dynamo celebrated his 100th trip around the sun. In attendance were Mavericks friends, fans and alumni and a number of his former wrestlers. This episode showcases the impact Macias had on the sport of wrestling, not just from a coaching perspective, but from a growth perspective as prior to Macias' arrival in Minnesota, just over 30 high schools sponsored the sport. It wasn't long after that over 300 sponsored it. Macias started the program at then Mankato State Teachers College in 1950 and coached there until 1988. He's one of three coaches in program history. You'll hear from former athletes and friends as well as current head coach Jim Makovsky and Macias himself (although the last bit of audio is very hard to hear, so my apologies in advance). Featured: Dale Roth, NAIA champion Al Blanshan, son David Macias, Division II champion Scott Madigan, longtime Washington & Lee head coach Gary Franke, Division II champion Jack Eustice, team manager Lance Peterson and longtime Minnesota wrestling leader Spencer Yohe. Helen Maroulis is an Olympic gold medal winning wrestler. In 2016, she became the first ever American to win a gold medal in women's freestyle wrestling at the Olympic Games. In 2021, she was back in the Olympics and became the first wrestler in women's wrestling for the USA to win two Olympic medals by taking home the Bronze. Maroulis was born in Rockville, Maryland and attended Magruder High School for three years, where as a freshman she became the first female wrestler to place at the Maryland state wrestling championships and at the age-group level, Maroulis was a three-time Junior World medalist (bronze in 2008 & 2010, silver in 2011). Today on the podcast, we talk to Helen about her new documentary "Helen|Believe," staying humble, finding joy in the difficult times, why starting a prayer journal helped her grow closer to God and learning to play the harp. Looking for a great gift idea? Order our new devotional book: "The Increase 52 Week Devotional: Inspiring Stories of Faith from the World of Pro Sports."
On this episode of Blindsided, we welcome Helen Maroulis. She's the first Olympic gold medalist ever for the U.S. in women's wrestling. After reaching the pinnacle of her career at the 2016 Games in Rio, Helen suffered a concussion. The effects revealed themselves over time and, she says, changed her a lot — mentally and emotionally. But she was determined to heal. Helen talks about struggling with her mental health after her injury … about losing all of her confidence right after she won the gold … and about why she considers her biggest accomplishment to be her return to wrestling. Helen came back to the sport with a new perspective. She earned a second medal this past summer at the Tokyo Olympics. It was a bronze — and without question it's the medal she's most proud of. Here's Helen Maroulis on Blindsided. *This episode contains content and topics that may be difficult for some listeners. Listener discretion is advised. If you or someone you know is struggling, you are not alone. There are many support services that are here to help. Hour 5: Constatine Maroulis was upset that Craig did not invite him to the big Turkey Day football game. Tommy brought in cookies on Monday. Evan and Big Mac brought in food today. Craig brought in nothing, well he did, he just kept it for himself. Thanksgiving is tomorrow and Craig shared what he is thankful for. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We've got another Olympian guest this week: Helen Maroulis who won GOLD back in 2016 against all-time great, Saori Yoshida. Then, multiple concussions and a dark struggle with mental health put Maroulis's wrestling career on hold...or so they thought. Helen bounced back in time for the Tokyo games and medaled once more, against all odds. Hers is a story of perspective and perseverance, values she also applies to her charity work. Helen works closely with When We Band Together, a nonprofit organization that provides safe places for refugees to live and thrive. h.e.r.LIFE will be donating $1 per stream of this episode to WWBT, and if you'd like to donate on your own, you can do so at wwbt.org. In this week's episode, Am Law Litigation Daily editor and columnist Ross Todd talks to Victoria Maroulis, an intellectual property litigator who has led the Silicon Valley office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan since 2012. Maroulis, who emigrated to the U.S. from the Soviet Union in the 1980s and worked her way through community college before ultimately earning her law degree from Yale, discusses her unique path to Big Law and the importance of providing guidance and mentorship to help up-and-coming lawyers as they embark upon and navigate their own career paths.
We invited Andreas Maroulis, a Greek bookbinder currently living in the UK. Andreas won an award at the Designer Bookbinders Competition recently with his binding "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck. Helen Maroulis became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling when she won in Rio in 2016. Not only did she break new ground for women's wrestling in the United States, it was the magnitude of victory that also impressed. To earn the gold, she beat the most dominant wrestler of all time, three-time Olympic gold medalist and thirteen-time World champion Saori Yoshida of Japan. Her career seemed full of possibilities, but a concussion suffered during a competition two years later put everything on hold. Eventually, with considerable outside help, she fought her way back. And at the recent Olympic Wrestling Trials in Fort Worth, she earned her way back on to the team headed to Tokyo, winning in a dramatic match over Jenna Burkert. In this conversation with SportsTravel Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz, we talk about Maroulis' start in wrestling, the journey to the Olympic Games, her epic comeback from her concussion and the victory at the Trials. Special thanks to one of Helen's sponsors, Procter & Gamble, for their help arranging this conversation. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brown and Maroulis announce they will be teaming up to do a new sports and entertainment show together at a network to be determined. We talk OBJ, Giants, Manziel, Final 4, Loyola Chicago, and a whole lot more of what is going on in the world of sports. We do an in-depth preview of the 2018 MLB season and both pick the Yankees to win the World Series.
Tonight, we'll take you to the Temple of Boom as I spent the time setting up this show listening to the mashup between Cypress Hill, Rage Against The Machine and Public Enemy -- they're the Prophets of Rage and it's just enough of a taste of all three groups to give you that angsty fight the man feeling from the late 90s. This is Short Time Shots, a look back at the day's scores and more for February 10, 2018, I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant and I actually saw Rage perform live back in August of 1997. We can tell you that the women's team at Campbellsville will be going down Rodeo after capturing the school's first ever Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association national championship on Saturday at Oklahoma City University. Powered by champions Grace Bullen and Kayla Miracle, the Lady Tigers took things down to the wire to rip the championship away from Simon Fraser in the event's final match. The stage was set for some drama as the finals round started at 143 pounds and would end with 136, where Miracle would wait to see if she could make history. More on that in a bit. Simon Fraser earned titles at 143 with U.S. World Teamer Mallory Velte winning her third WCWA title with a dominant win over Junior World bronze medalist Alexis Porter of McKendree. Brittany Marshall would Fight the Power and give Wayland Baptist a title with a 6-5 victory at 170 over Campbellsville's Mariah Harris. Marshall scored two as time expired to cap an exciting bout. Simon Fraser would overtake Campbellsville with back-to-back titles at 116 and 123. At 116, Abby Lloyd capped her career winning her first WCWA title after finishing second the previous two years. At 123, Dominique Parrish topped unseeded teammate Alex Hedrick 5-4 to claim gold. With two weights left, Campbellsville and Simon Fraser would meet up at 130 with SFU holding a seven point lead. The lead would shrink to one as freshman Grace Bullen, a Norwegian import, laid down another bombtrack pinning Nicole Depa in 2:17 seconds. Miracle would then step to the mat, with her chance at four titles and the team title on the line. She gave up the first takedown to Grays Harbor's Desiree Zavala, but then used a leg turk to arch Zavala over for the fall. MIC. DROP. CHAMPIONSHIP. Lights out. Guerilla Radio. Miracle joins exclusive company, joining Oklahoma City's Emily Webster and Simon Fraser's Victoria Anthony and Helen Maroulis as four-time WCWA champs. Maroulis actually won her first title at Missouri Baptist. There were also a number of emotional moments, including Kaitlyn Hill finally earning All-American honors for the first time and then promptly getting hit with a marriage proposal. Get the tissues folks. It's one of those moments that you just can't put into words. Marina Doi's shot for a third individual championship came to an end, as her twin sister Regina would claim the title at 101 poun ds. But the California wonder twins also made this moment distinctly theirs. You see, Marina had previous won two titles but the sisters had a goal to meet each other in the finals when they decided to attend King. That happened this year and Marina forfeited to her sister, giving Regina her first title. The pair then placed their shoes on the mat, signifying their retirement from wrestling. Emmanuel's Cody Pfau would Take the Power Back, winning her third title and first for her new school. She'd previous won two titles at Oklahoma City. Lindenwood-Belleville's Niauni Hill finished an undefeated season with a title at 155 pounds. Paige Baynes of Grays Harbor would be the OW, earning the title at 191 pounds. She teched all four opponents in a combined 3:32. Moving over to the men's side of things, there was enough to talk about at an indoor record crowd of 15,998 saw No. 1 Penn State top No. 7 Iowa 28-13 at a sold-out Bryce Jordan Center. The most notable win of the dual came in Iowa's favor, as it was Bulls on Parade -- or just BULL as Alex Marinelli defended a Vincenzo Joseph inside trip attempt and body-locked the returning NCAA champion to his back for a six-point sequence leading to Marinell's win at 165. Marinelli is still unbeaten as a freshman. It gave Iowa a shred of life -- that is until Mark Hall and Bo Nicka l scored back-to-back falls in a minute or less to slam the door on any Hawkeye comeback hopes. Nick Nevills topped Sam Stoll at heavyweight, while Zain Retherford controlled Brandon Sorensen at 149 pounds. No. 10 Cornell beat Penn 33-9 and Princeton 34-6 to claim yet another regular season Ivy League championship. One notable came against Princeton where super freshman Ben Darmstadt rallied in the third period to beat Princeton's Pat Brucki. Darmstadt trailed by two before getting a reversal, a penalty point for stalling and two nearfall to earn a 9-6 victory. No. 13 Northern Iowa packed West Gym to the rafters and beat Iowa State 31-7 in the first meeting between the two teams as members of the Big 12. UNI joined the conference this season as an affiliate member after spending the last five years in the MAC. Also around DI, Oklahoma beat Edinboro 19-16, Penn topped Columbia 21-18 and Stanford beat Oregon State 22-15. Amar Dhesi with an 8-5 win over Nathan Butler at heavyweight there. Davidson won its second dual in a row, beating Division II Belmont Abbey 25-16. In Division III, there were a host of conference tournaments before we get to the regional qualifying weekend coming up, but there are two notables I want to throw out here. The first comes from the Rochester Institute of Technology, or RIT where freshman Kaidon Winters broke Matt Hamill's single season school record for falls. YES, THAT Matt Hamill, the guy who won three Division III titles for the Tigers and the deaf guy who fought in the UFC and is in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for the medal of courage. Kaidon Winters, bravo young man. He's 35-8 this year. The other milestone goes to NYU's Raymond Jazikoff. He won two matches at the UAA championships, which is just a tri-meet between the University of Chicago, Case Western Reserve and NYU. Jazikoff's two wins put him at 142 for his career, setting a new school record with still a few weeks left in the season. Jazikoff is 41-5 this year for coach Bruce Haberli's Bobcats. They're today's Renegades of Funk. GET THE GUIDE! Order the single greatest preview guide ever assembled for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships right now! With the Olympic championships won by Kyle Snyder and Helen Maroulis, there is no shortage of people who helped them attain those goals. High School coach Kevin Black. Black, an All-American at Wisconsin, has been a multiple-time World team coach and a past USA Women's Coach of the Year. Ryan is Snyder's head coach at Ohio State, while Black has trained Maroulis for a number of years.
