Sara Cunningham is an author, activist, and founder of the non-profit organization Free Mom Hugs. Her journey is a surprising one that began in conservative Oklahoma, when her son, Parker, came out as gay. As a woman of faith, Sara wrestled with the news until she began to study, research, and reconcile the two worlds. This journey resulted in her book How We Sleep at Night. She found herself on a journey “from the church to the Pride parade,” falling in love with the LGBTQIA+ community. In the wake of beautiful glitter-covered hugs and heart-breaking horror stories, the mission of Free Mom Hugs began. Simple acts of love and acceptance turned into a viral sensation, and Sara knew she had the opportunity to lead impactful change. Free Mom Hugs is now a movement across the country and the world. Sara goes Beyond the Hug to educate and advocate organizations of all types including schools and businesses striving for safe and protected spaces. She has appeared, many times with her son Parker, on the Today show and The RuPaul Show and spoke at the 2019 GLAAD Awards. She also has been featured in many national publications including The Washington Post, Woman's Day magazine, and People magazine. Sara is currently in partnership with Jamie Lee Curtis, who purchased the rights to her book and has discussed developing a movie based on her story. A documentary about the Mama Bears movement by award winning director Daresha Kyi also features Sara and the Free Mom Hugs movement. Sara's passion is to change the perspective of the outside world toward this beautiful part of our community so that we as a society, not only learn to affirm, but more importantly, celebrate. Her goal is to help parents and children have authentic relationships and understanding for each other using her own experience and education as a guide. Sara is passionate about connecting with faith, civic, and business leaders in efforts to make the world a kinder, safer place for our LGBTQIA+ family. She is gifted at inspiring others to join her in this movement that is sweeping the nation and the world.https://freemomhugs.orgInstagram: @freemomhugs_________________________Register for First Friday's Free coaching and learn other ways to work with me: https://paperbell.me/meagan-skidmorehttps://meaganskidmorecoaching.com.Please help the podcast grow by following, leaving a 5 star review on Spotify or Apple podcasts and sharing with friends.Living Beyond the Shadow of Doubt™ is a proud member of the Dialogue Podcast Network [DialogueJournal.com/podcasts].Hopeful Spaces, a monthly support group facilitated by Meagan Skidmore Coaching, is a Dallas Hope Charities component of Hopeful Discussions sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Financial Services USA. Free Mom Hugs' mission is to celebrate the LGBTQIA community through visibility, conversation and education and hugs. Valencia Foster is the Free Mom Hugs Southern California State Chapter Lead, and a native of Los Angeles. Valencia has had a long and rewarding career in pharmaceutical and biotech sales and marketing. Currently, she is an Associate Director in field marketing as a Thought Leader Liaison with a pioneering biotech company. Valencia ‘s passions include her allyship advocacy for the LGBTQIA community. She has held the position of Southern Chapter Leader for the national nonprofit organization, Free Mom Hugs, for the last 5 years. Free Mom Hugs' mission is to celebrate the LGBTQIA community through visibility, conversation and education and hugs. The Free Mom Hugs Story Free Mom Hugs was founded by Sara Cunningham, a Christian mother in conservative Oklahoma, who spent years rejecting her son Parker's sexuality, after he came out to her. Conflicted by her love for her son and her spirituality, Sara exhaustively searched faith and sexuality for answers. What she learned would transform her journey from the church to the pride parade. As Sara became involved in the LGBTQIA+ community, the hurt, shame and injustice they frequently experience was painfully clear. Remembering that she too was once in the crowd that rejected this loving, vibrant community, Sara took action. On Saturday, June 20, 2015, Sara wore a homemade button with the words “Free Mom Hugs” to the Oklahoma City Pride Festival. She offered hugs to anyone who made eye contact. The first hug Sara gave was to a beautiful girl who whispered, “It's been four years since I got a hug from my mom because I'm a lesbian.” Sara embraced her and hundreds more that day, and many shared similar stories with every embrace. That day Free Mom Hugs — a nationwide movement of love, visibility and acceptance for the LGBTQIA+ community — was born. In 2018, Sara created a Facebook post that instantly went viral: “PSA: If you need a mom to attend your same-sex wedding because your biological mom won't, call me. I'm there. I'll be your biggest fan. I'll even bring the bubbles.” The shockwaves of the post catapulted Sara and Parker's story into the national spotlight. Shortly after, the movement took another leap forward when Free Mom Hugs was established as a national nonprofit. Today, Free Mom Hugs has chapters in all 50 states and other initiatives forming globally. The group's growing force of more than 14,000 volunteers is a national groundswell dedicated to empowering the world to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community through visibility, conversation and education. As enrollment levels for traditional-aged college students decline, credit for prior learning has become a vital topic of conversation within higher education. Awarding credit for previous work or certifications offers a promising strategy to boost enrollment numbers. In this episode, Dr. Sara Cunningham explores how organizations like the American Council on Education (ACE) can collaborate with universities to standardize prior learning. Dr. Cunningham is the Executive Director of One Dupont Ventures, leading initiatives to improve learner mobility and success as part of ACE's Education Futures. She joined ACE's Learning Evaluations team in 2018 to help develop digital learner records and promote credit for prior learning. We're back for more of our Being Seen and Heard series! In a time where it feels like we are struggling to really see and hear one another, there are some bright lights who make it their mission to help one another understand each other a little better. Our guest today, Sara Cunningham, the founder of FreeMomHugs.org, is one amazing example of what can happen when we really see people for who they are and begin to hear their stories. Sara was on the show right at the beginning of her journey with Free Mom Hugs, and now the org—which started with the simple idea of attending Pride parades and holding up a sign that said “Free Mom Hugs,”—has become a national and world wide phenomenon. She uses her own experience as a guide to how she advocates, and is absolutely passionate about connecting with faith, civic, business, and government leaders in efforts to make the world a kinder safer place for our LGBTQIA+ family. Sara and Jen touch on these topics: Sara's roots in conservative evangelicalism and how she found herself moving “from the church to the pride parade” after she reckoned with her son's admission that he was gay and going to live in his identity The stories of people who, after coming out, lost their families, were kicked out of their churches, and felt completely alone and found solace and comfort in the simple act of a mom extending a hug Sara's son Parker's (as well as her own) journey of self-discovery and then coming to live authentically after seeing others, who had come out in faith environments, survive and thrive after loss How we can affect change with our voices as it relates to legislation that targets the LGBTQIA+ community * * * Thank you to our sponsors! It was like reality was setting in. The bubble that I was in, the evangelical conservative mainstream bubble that I was in where everyone looked like me and talked like me, had just shattered. And I wanted to take a banner and put it outside of my house on the front door, like, welcome to the real world. And suddenly it's like my eyes are truly open.” - Sara Cunningham “I think about [my son] Parker early on in his journey of self-discovery and then coming to live authentically. He had people in his life that had survived the loss, who had survived being outed, kicked out of their place of worship and losing their family. Just seeing them go beyond that and thriving and having a place of their own and working and contributing to society; he saw people that had faced what he feared and then came out on the other side of it.” - Sara Cunningham “Our mission statement is that we empower the world to celebrate the community through visibility, education, and conversation.” - Sara Cunningham, about FreeMomHugs.org Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Mama Bears FTL Episode ft. Today we continue our exclusive deadCenter 2022 coverage with a look at this year's deadCenter opening night film from director Daresha Kyi, Mama Bears. Kyi sits down with us on The Cinematic Schematic to talk about how she first learned about the Mama Bears organization before making the documentary. Joining host Caleb Masters in this interview is a special guest co-host, this year's deadCenter Pride Programmer, Laron Chapman. The film tells the moving story of the rise of the movement of evangelical mothers who decide to embrace and support the LGBTQ community through love, education, and emotional support at weddings. The film follows four different storylines including the rise of Oklahoma's own Sara Cunningham of Free Mom Hugs, Kimberly Shappley, and Tammi Terrell Morris, a young African American lesbian. The empathetic and emotionally charged film touches on many very personal subjects such as the traditional Christian view on same-sex marriage, the negative impacts the politics have on LGBTQ homes, and the importance of love between mothers and their children. Kyi walks us through how she navigated these challenging topics with grace and a message of hope and love first. A conversation with Free Mom Hugs Founder Sara Cunningham Like so many of us, Sara Cunningham, the founder of Free Mom Hugs, is the product of a long theological journey. At first, she didn't give her son Parker space to have honest conversations about his sexuality, within the context of the ideological constructs of the world she was in.But after Parker's story cracked her open, she became an advocate and ally, offering the unconditional mother's love and acceptance to so many that she once didn't know how to extend.Join Lance Rodman, Malika Cox, and Jonathan Martin as they delve deep into Sara's inspiring, moving, and convicting journey, in a way that will hopefully take you deeper into your own.

I imagine many of my listeners are regulars at pride parades. If that’s you, you’ve probably seen the moms who offer free hugs to LGBTQ kids who may not have a supportive or loving family. There is something so simple and yet so profound about that act of kindness. It communicates a love that is basic to human dignity but often denied to LGBTQ kids. The idea behind those free hugs comes from today’s guest, Sara Cunningham. She is the founder of the nonprofit, Free Mom Hugs. Sara comes from a faith tradition, so when her own son came out as gay, she really struggled. In this episode, we’re discussing her journey from that point to her current place of acceptance and affirmation of her son. Show Highlights: The experiences Sara went through when her son came out. How she has rebuilt trust with her son. What drove her to change her perspective on the LGBTQ+ community. How our culture and legal system have progressed over the years. What Sara’s mission with Free Mom Hugs is. What it is like for Sara to work with secular gay rights groups as a woman of faith. Why love and education are the keys to a better understanding of the LGBTQ+ community. The best parenting practices of affirmation and love. Sara calls herself an accidental activist for LGBTQ kids, and their families. It took her a little while, but Sara finally broke through the fog and fully embraced Palmer's sexual orientation. Since that moment, she has been on the front lines of LGBTQ advocacy. Recently, her story caught the attention of Hollywood legend Jamie Lee Curtis who has bought the rights to do a movie based on Sara's book How We Sleep at Night. Sara is funny, thoughtful, and making a difference through her organization Free Mom Hugs. You will love meeting her.

Sara Cunningham, author/activist and founder of the non-profit, Free Mom Hugs. Her journey began in conservative Oklahoma, when her son, Parker, came out as gay. As a woman of faith, she wrestled with the news, until she began to study, research, and reconcile the two worlds. She found herself on a journey “from the church to the Pride parade”, falling in love with the LGBTQ+ Community. In the wake of beautiful, glitter covered hugs, and heart-breaking, horror stories, the mission of Free Mom Hugs began. Now a movement across the country, and the world, Sara is going Beyond the Hug, to educate and advocate. She has recently been seen on the Today show, spoke at the 2019 GLAAD Awards, and is in partnership with Jamie Lee Curtis to make a movie about her story. Her passion is to change the narrative so that we as a society, not only learn to affirm the LGBTQ+ community but celebrate them. Sara Cunningham struggled when her son told her he was gay. Now she volunteers as a stand-in mom at same-sex weddings when the biological parents refuse to attend.
Episode 90 - Sara Cunningham Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Sara Cunningham. Founder of Free Mom Hugs and Executive Director, Sara has a heart as deep and wide as the ocean, and a commitment to the LGBTQ+ community that matches it. Raised on traditional christian teachings, when Sara found out one of her two sons, Parker (Free Mom Hugs board member), was gay, it initially devastated her. “I wrestled with my faith as if I had to choose between my faith and my son,” she said. “I reexamined everything I believed.” But she dug in and educated herself. In 2014, she attended her first Pride with Parker and her husband, Rex. The next year, she attended again, but this time wearing a hand-written pin that read “Free Mom Hugs.” She gave hugs and high fives and heard haunting stories of rejection. Her heart fell for the hurting and beautiful LBGTQ+ community. With her unwavering passion and loyalty, Sara, author of “How We Sleep at Night; A Mother's Memoirs,” spends her time advocating for equality and love. She is a gifted speaker and shares her story whenever she can. An ordained minister, Sara officiates same-sex weddings across the country, and went viral when she posted on Facebook to volunteer to be a stand-in mom for LGBTQ+ couples whose own families wouldn't attend their weddings. Sara is passionate about all aspects of LGBTQ+ equality and love but has found a draw to advocating for the trans community – a group that often gets neglected and experiences more pain and rejection than most. What does Free Mom Hugs mean to her? “For me, it just represents unconditional love,” she said. “Everyone needs love and understanding from their mother.” To learn more about Free Hom Hugs, visit their website: https://www.freemomhugs.org Note: Guests create their own bio description for each episode. #161: Hugs or High Fives with Sara Cunningham of Free Mom Hugs Cellar Door Skeptics is bringing you not one, but two charities of the week. Their segment talking about local charities is extended this week as they interview Sara Cunningham of Free Mom Hugs, an organization dedicated to help other parents realize the having children whom are LGBTQ is wonderful and normal. Sara tells her story about how she left conservative christian beliefs and came to the understanding that her beliefs should never dictate who she loves. She talks about her organization Free Mom Hugs, how it started, and the desire to help make an impact on society to shed the ridiculous idea that LGBTQ people are not deserving of love. Check out our full unedited interview on Patreon for a longer version of our discussion. After talking about the different charities, the duo tackle the highly controversial video of the MAGA hat wearing youth, their confrontation with a Native American Elder, and why even with the longer video we need to stop and examine the evidence before letting these children off the hook. Chris Squared take a deep dive into an emotional subject and look at some of the reasons they feel the situation should be given a second look without just accepting what the media said. This segment is full of passion, as both of the Chris’ wade through how the situation could have been handled better by the children, and how even if they were screaming, how their MAGA hats represent the hate and racism embodied within our society. The show ends as always with Hanna’s and Tanner’s Infamous Quick Saves of the week. You spoke—we listened. Sara Cunningham was your nominee from the tribe for the last episode of our “Women Who Built It,” series and we couldn’t be more thrilled to hear about what she is building. When Sara’s son came to her with the decision that he was going to live as a gay man on his 21st birthday, Sara’s life went into a tailspin. After 20 years in the church and actively “praying the gay away,” with and on behalf of her son, she was at a crossroads. Her search for resources as a Christian mom turned up very little, but her research on the data and statistics out of the LGBTQ community devastated her. The rejection she saw from families, churches, and communities was more than she could bear. She needed to begin the work of accepting her son, and she started by getting involved with Free Mom Hugs. Showing up at a Pride Rally with a homemade “Free Mom Hugs,” button, she simply gave out hugs—some to young people whose own mothers hadn’t hugged them in years. Whatever your beliefs, you will want to hear Sara’s moving journey and her mission of spreading healing—not only to a community who often feels marginalized—but to their families in the church who are looking for answers.
