What does it take to become a leading man in TV, film and theatre? Is it good looks? Or is it something else that's impossible to define? Cary Grant and Ryan Gosling have it! So does Australian actor Ian Stenlake. He's been a “leading man” in popular TV shows like Sea Patrol, The Secret Daughter, Dance Academy and Stingers, and in hit musicals like Mamma Mia, Oklahoma and Sam Mendes' production of Cabaret opposite Aussie songstress, Tina Arena. Currently, Ian is touring Australia in Elvis: A Musical Revolution playing Elvis' fiendish manager. An old Brisvegas theatre buddy, I directed him in a couple of shows there. I emailed the two-time Green Room Award Winner and asked him to join me on my podcast series and explain what it takes to become a leading man. Leading Man Podcast (feat. Ian Stenlake) and hosted by Noel Anderson This podcast contains stories of Aussie television, musical theatre, Christianity, working on a big-budget Hollywood film…and Carols by Candlelight. One of the things I love about this podcast is how open and willing the guests are to sit with me in tough and important conversations. And this conversation with Chum Ehelepola stayed with me long after we'd finished. We went deep very early. Exploring living in war, decisions to immigrate, the raw face of racism, and making it in the world of screen and acting where we still have a long way to go in terms of diversity. Having walked away from an engineering career to follow his passion for acting Chum's television credits include: The Straits playing the lovable rogue, Joseph; Sea Patrol, Laid, All Saints, and most recently The Newsreader which was awarded AACTA award for best Australian drama. We dive into Chum's career, navigating Hollywood, the importance of diversity on our screens, and his decision to live with his family in the country. I loved everything about this conversation and there's every chance you will too. Enjoy the depth and delight that is Chum Ehelepola. New South Wales residents are one step closer to normalcy... with the onus now on us to get vaccinated to ensure pubs, restaurants and shops can open next month. A mum from Sydney's eastern suburbs who was stressed about her son's ice addiction when she repeatedly stabbed him in the back has avoided jail time. Lisa McCune first performed on stage at the age of 15 playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. She is synonymous with the character of ‘Maggie Doyle’ in the popular television drama , Blue Heelers. The role rewarded her with a swag of awards, including four Gold Logies as the most popular personality on Australian TV.McCune is not an actor to be defined by one role however, and has continued to amass a vast repertoire of performances on television and in plays and musical theatre. She trained at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, demonstrating a resilience and ambition, as one of the youngest students to be accepted into the course. Her immense charm and engaging persona have made her the perfect casting in a succession of Rodgers and Hammerstein roles, where she has delighted audiences as Maria in The Sound of Music, Nellie Forebush in South Pacific and Anna Leonowens in The King and I. Her range is vast and she has given a terrific assortment of performances; Nunsense, Guys & Dolls, The Potato Factory, Sea Patrol, 33 Variations, Little Fish, Cabaret, Urinetown and How To Stay Married to list but a few.Adept at musical theatre, comedy and drama she is immediately likeable and accomplished in her navigation of character and story. Lisa was giving her ‘Gertrude’ in Hamlet with The Bell Shakespeare Company when the pandemic forced the closure of many theatres; effectively forcing the valuable work of the Arts sector to an abrupt stop.It was indeed a pleasure to converse with Lisa (from afar) and contemplate her career, craft and COVID-19.
