One of the greatest ironies of the history of Soviet rule is that, for an officially atheistic state, those in the political police and in the Politburo devoted an enormous amount of time and attention to the question of religion. The Soviet government's policies toward religious institutions in the USSR, and toward religious institutions in the non-Communist world, reflected this, especially when it came to the Vatican and Catholic Churches, both the Latin and Byzantine Rite, in Soviet territory. The KGB and the Vatican consists of the transcripts of KGB records concerning the policies of the Soviet secret police towards the Vatican and the Catholic Church in the Communist world, transcripts provided by KGB archivist and defector Vasili Mitrokhin, from the Second Vatican Council to the election of John Paul II. Among the topics covered include how the Soviet regime viewed the efforts of John XXIII and Paul VI of reaching out to eastern side of the Iron Curtain, the experience of the Roman Catholic Church in Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic and the underground Greek Catholic Church in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, the religious underground in the key cities of Leningrad and Moscow, and finally the election of John Paul II and its effect on the tumultuous events in Poland in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This valuable primary source collection also contains a historical introduction written by the translator, Sean Brennan, a professor of History at the University of Scranton. Allison Isidore is a Religious Studies Ph.D. student at the University of Iowa and is the Assistant Director for the American Catholic Historical Association. Sean Brennan and I discuss what it feels like to "let go" and surrender to the low-fidelity, rapid prototyping working style that the innovation industry requires to move ideas forward. It takes a certain amount of self-awareness as an artist / designer to put the "look" of your creation aside and use your skills instead as a utilitarian tool for alignment, thinking and progress on the ideas. I also love the conversation at the end about the future of storytelling for innovation. Sean brings up some really cool ideas about using VR in human-centered design projects and the opportunities that are ahead for immersive storytelling for innovation.Continuum (now called EPAM)Deloitte DigitalSign up here for my FREE 3 day workshop series, May 10th-12thMy 5 week program, Storytelling for Innovation Accelerator

Philp Fabian Flynn led a remarkable life, bearing witness to some of the most pivotal events of the twentieth century. Flynn took part in the invasions of Sicily and Normandy, the Battle of Aachen, and the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest. He acted as confessor to Nazi War Criminals during the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, assisted Hungarian Revolutionaries on the streets of Budapest, and assisted the waves of refugees arriving in Austria feeling the effects of ethnic and political persecution during the Cold War. The Priest Who Put Europe Back Together: The Life of Rev. Fabian Flynn, CP (Catholic U of America Press, 2018) tells the story of this fascinating life. From solidly middle-class beginnings in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Flynn interacted with and occasionally advised some of the major political, military, and religious leaders of his era. His legacy as a Passionist priest, a chaplain in the US Army, and an official in the Catholic Relief Services was both vast and enormously beneficial. His life and career symbolized the "coming of age" of the United States as a global superpower, and the corresponding growth of the American Catholic Church as an international institution. Both helped liberate half of Europe from Fascist rule, and then helped to rebuild its political, economic, and social foundations, which led to an unprecedented period of peace and prosperity. His efforts on behalf of both his country and his Church to contain Communist influence, and to assist the refugees of its tyranny, contributed to its collapse. Flynn was one of the hundreds of Americans who put Europe back together after a period of horrendous self-destruction. In a twentieth century filled with villains and despots, Flynn played a heroic and vital role in extraordinary times. Carlos Ruiz Martinez is a PhD student in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Iowa. He is also the Communications Assistant for the American Catholic Historical Association (ACHA). His general interest is in American religious history, especially American Catholicism. Sean Brennan is my friend and collaborator, an incredible musician, and the editor of this podcast. And today I'm bringing him in front of the mic to share with us about his creative process. A lot of us have been taught that being creative and making art requires diligence and routine. Sean's here to argue that routine can often be the enemy of creativity. So instead, what can you do today to mix things up? To change your perspective? I'll say, this is all stuff I really needed to hear! And for a special treat, listen all the way to the end of the episode and you'll get to hear the latest song from his band Strange Weather.

Fasten your seat belts and get ready to hear from one of the Fast Casual industry's most innovative and cool restauranteurs -- Peter Wiley, the Co-Founder at Rapid Fired Pizza & Hot Head Burritos -- and super human Qu account rep, Sean Brennan. These two guys are driving the restaurant tech industry forward with new ways of embracing technology, modern processes, and restaurant trends - like cryptocurrency, just to name one.Key Insights & Quotes• POS built from the cloud down versus from the POS up to the cloud.  Hear from Peter the big difference with modern tech built first from cloud, and connected to all the other systems, like POS. • As new technologies emerge on the market, restaurants need to keep up.Technology is no longer just a piece of your business or something you have to deal with, according to Peter. It is an integral part of running a restaurant nowadays, from the marketing all the way to the ops. • Modern & agile software reduces friction and enables a seamless user experienceNobody likes friction: not Peter's employees, not his customers, and not him!  Third-party delivery has eliminated friction to a certain degree and has allowed for a smoother ordering process, but only if it's connected directly into the POS - natively with bidirectional APIs. • Strong partnerships in technology deployment are vital.According to Peter, the key is to communicate and learn from each other. Communication helps us grow. "That opportunity just makes for a better product.” Peter and his team's input and feedback has gone a long…. way into making Qu a better next gen POS and Omni-channel ordering platform for QSRs and Fast Casual restaurants.  Resources• Rapid Fire Pizza• Hot Head Burritos• How to Stop Hating & Start Loving Third-Party Delivery (Free E-Book!)• 3 Ways to Future-Proof Your Restaurant Tech Stack• Connect with Peter Wiley on LinkedIn

What should you do at the scene of an accident? First, call 911. You always need documentation. Memories and stories change over time. The impartial, third-party account taken by an officer is critical. Information is still fresh in everyone's mind and this is your best chance to accurately document what happened. In this episode of the Accident Recovery Team podcast, Sean Brennan and Drew Steadman sit down to talk about documentation and all the other elements of accident scenes. Listen for advice on how to protect your health and future claim for damages. Police officers generally don't take pictures at the scene of an accident unless a fatality is involved. If you are medically able, take pictures and videos of the scene. Down the road, these images provide undisputed evidence. Up close and far away views are both helpful. After an accident is cleared, there is no way to recreate it. If you are able, take a couple minutes and capture pictures and video from the scene. Refusing evaluation, treatment and transportation to the hospital after an accident can damage your health and your future insurance claim. Don't worry about the ambulance bill. Tune in to the Accident Recovery Team podcast on PIP coverage for information about auto insurance benefits that will cover this bill. After an accident, the Accident Recovery Team recommends being honest, documenting with pictures and following the advice of medical professionals on the scene. Call or reach out online for more information. We have all the legal understanding you need to make informed decisions after auto accidents, workplace injuries and medical malpractice. Consultations are always free and you never pay a fee until we win.
