How Pakistan's Instability Impacts Afghanistan

Qatar again has served as the location for Afghanistan-centred gatherings. As a UN-convened conference kicked off, representatives from different countries, international bodies as well as Afghan civil society gathered in Doha as part of what was supposed to be a discussion on how to transition Afghanistan out of its state of diplomatic and legal isolation following the Taliban's takeover in 2021. More important than those who attended, as events transpired, were those who were absent. Following a series of diplomatic breakthroughs, and amidst expectations that it too would attend, the Taliban-led government announced abruptly that it would not be attending the conference. Its conditions to attend the meeting, per its spokesman, had not been met. Kabul's conditions, UN Secretary General António Guterres later claimed, essentially amounted to a demand for full recognition of the Taliban-led government as the legitimate representative of the Afghan state.Elsewhere, controversy in Pakistan continues. After weeks of instability following controversial elections, a coalition government was formed between the parties that came second and third in recent elections was formed. Independents affiliated with now jailed ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan remain excluded. The new Prime Minister is Shahbaz Sharif: a former Prime Minister and brother of two-time ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Asif Ali Zardari: former President, husband of ex-PM Benazir Bhutto and father of Bilawal Bhutto (leader of the Pakistan People's Party), is to serve as new President. As fragile coalitions are formed and widespread allegations of election rigging, Pakistan's powerful military continues to crack down on social media and supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Amidst Pakistan' persistent political instability, Ahmed-Waleed and Sangar discuss whether and how the South Asian country's woes will impact Afghanistan.Links/references:Chinese envoy 'regrets' Taliban absence at Doha conference:https://www.khaama.com/china-regrets-the-un-doha-meetings-failure-to-engage-in-dialogue-with-taliban/US Special Envoy Thomas West's reflections on Doha Conference: https://twitter.com/US4AfghanPeace/status/1760815035419381856UN Secretary General: 'We want a peaceful Afghanistan': https://news.un.org/en/story/2024/02/1146657Pakistan's dire economic situation: https://www.ft.com/content/fbdf57c2-cce4-4c35-827a-1528899f5fb7Mawlana Fazlur Rahman on his links to Afghanistan: https://x.com/adilkha89345692/status/1757789279839797482?s=46Mawlana Fazlur Rahman on Imran Khan's ouster:https://www.dawn.com/news/1814484Pakistan's new coalition government: https://www.aljazeera.com/program/newsfeed/2024/2/21/pakistan-parties-agree-deal-to-form-coalition-governmentSupport the show♦ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Afgeye ♦ PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/afghaneye ♦ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/afghaneyeinsta/ ♦ X: https://X.com/AfgEye♦ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/afgeyeFB/ ♦ Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yb4sz7bh ♦ Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/ycjlytsz ♦ Google Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/y5qsvqq2 ♦ Shop: https://teespring.com/stores/the-afghan-eye-podcast

Imran Khan, Retorika Populis dan Permainan Dua Kaki ala Pakistan Oleh. Iranti Mantasari, BA.IR, M.Si (Kontributor Tetap NarasiPost.Com) Voice over talent: Giriyani SS NarasiPost.Com-Pakistan beberapa hari terakhir tengah panas. On 10 April, Pakistani legislators passed a no-confidence vote that ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan's government. The vote capped weeks of political turbulence, as a coalition of rival parties accused Khan's government of chronic mismanagement amidst an intense economic crisis fuelled by soaring inflation. Khan has not gone quietly. Parliamentarians from his party walked out of the National Assembly in protest at the vote and thousands of furious supporters have taken to the streets. Khan accuses his successor Shahbaz Sharif of abetting a foreign conspiracy aimed at toppling him. This week on Hold Your Fire! Richard Atwood is joined from Lahore by acclaimed author, journalist and Crisis Group trustee Ahmed Rashid to talk about Pakistan's political crisis, what it might mean for the country's stability and challenges for the Sharif government. They discuss Khan's response to his ouster and how disruptive a force his movement might be in the months ahead. They look at his apparent fall from grace with the chiefs of Pakistan's powerful military. They discuss the dilemmas facing Sharif, particularly, reviving a floundering economy, navigating relations with the military and containing rising Islamist militancy, all the while managing coalition politics. They also talk about the fallout from Russia's war in Ukraine and its impact on a difficult foreign policy agenda: repairing relations with Western capitals, keeping China on board and managing what appeared to be warming ties to Moscow, alongside the traditionally bitter rivalry with India and complicated relations with the Taliban in Afghanistan. For more information, explore Crisis Group's analysis on our Pakistan country page and make sure to read our recent Q&A, “Imran Khan's Fall: Political and Security Implications for Pakistan” , and our report, “Pakistan's Hard Policy Choices in Afghanistan”. *) Macron, Le Pen head for cliffhanger French election runoff French leader Emmanuel Macron and challenger Marine Le Pen have qualified for what promises to be a tightly fought presidential election runoff on April 24. Macron beat his far-right rival by a larger than expected margin, securing 27.41 percent of the votes counted so far, compared to Le Pen's 24.9 percent. Local polls predict a very tight runoff, with 51 percent for Macron and 49 percent for Le Pen. *) New ‘Russia offensive' on Ukraine coming Russian forces will launch an offensive not only on the port of Mariupol, but also on Kiev and other Ukrainian cities, says the head of Russia's republic of Chechnya. Meanwhile Ukraine has accused Moscow of “war crimes” after discovering a trail of more than 1,220 bodies outside Kiev in towns where the Russian army has retreated. Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova said 5,600 cases have been opened into the alleged crimes committed by Russian forces since the start of attacks on February 24th. *) Tens of thousands hit Pakistani streets to protest Imran Khan's ouster Tens of thousands of protesters have rallied across Pakistan in support of Imran Khan, who was ousted in a parliamentary no-trust vote as prime minister. Khan's supporters marched in cities across Pakistan, waving large party flags and vowing support. Hundreds of his supporters also held protests in the UK, Australia and the UAE. Khan's successor is to be elected and sworn in by Parliament on Monday, with Shahbaz Sharif as the leading contender. *) Several Palestinians killed, wounded as Israeli raids continue in Jenin Gun battles have rocked the occupied West Bank's Jenin area for the second day. At least 10 Palestinians were wounded and more than 20 arrested by Israeli forces, who shot dead three others elsewhere, Palestinian officials say. The district of Jenin is home to a gunman who launched two recent deadly attacks in Tel Aviv, Israeli authorities say, demanding that his father Fathi Hazem turn himself in. *) Elon Musk no longer joining Twitter board Billionaire Elon Musk has decided not to join Twitter's board. Musk, who disclosed a 9.2-percent stake in Twitter, was offered a board seat and his appointment was to become effective on Saturday. But the Tesla chief said “that same morning that he will no longer be joining", Twitter's Chief Executive Parag Agrawal said in a tweet.
