Conversation between David Amram and Doug Yeager in the context of the film screening / Moderation: Wolfgang Knapp (ZKM) [20.10.2021] David Amram returns! To celebrate his 90th birthday, the ZKM showed the Hollywood classic »Splendor in the Grass«, for which he wrote the score. The 1961 U.S. feature film »Splendor in the Grass« by Elia Kazan tells the tragic love story of Wilma Dean and Bud Stamper. Set in a small town in Kansas in 1928, their love is hindered by bourgeois morals, family expectations and different origins. Rejection, self-discovery, as well as turning away from one's parents' home play a crucial role, referencing the »coming-of-age« genre. Winner of the Photoplay Award, three Golden Globe nominations and many other awards, the film is considered a classic in American film history and helped the young actress Natalie Wood to her breakthrough. The screening was followed by a light-hearted conversation between David Amram and manager, producer and filmmaker Doug Yeager.

Born in Philadelphia in 1930 David Amram was raised on a dairy farm in Feasterville, Pennsylvania, where, he says, he loved hearing “the old hog callers, who excelled in this special style of performing art,” he writes. “Whether or not they impressed any hogs, these farmers made me see that you can find music and beauty anywhere if you pay attention. They also made me see that you can transform anything into a form of expression all your own.” In 1951 David Amram started his professional life in music as a French Hornist in the National Symphony Orchestra. After serving in the US Army, he moved to New York City in 1955 and played French horn in the legendary jazz bands of Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton and Oscar Pettiford. David also created and performed in the first ever jazz and poetry readings in New York City with novelist and close friend Jack Kerouac, with whom he collaborated with for over 12 years. David also composed the scores for many films including Pull My Daisy, Splendor In The Grass and The Manchurian Candidate, as well as being appointed by Leonard Bernstein as the first composer in residence for the New York Philharmonic in 1966. Over the decades, Amram has preserved his artistic adventures in three memoirs: Vibrations, Offbeat: Collaborations with Kerouac, and Upbeat: Nine Lives of a Musical Cat. He's currently working on the fourth, to be entitled David Amram: The Next Eighty Years.

Despite Andrew's aversion to most comic movies, he must admit that the last 3 Marvel releases (Spiderman: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther) were all pretty good. Giving respect to the previous work of the directors of those, we did a pretty deep dive into "Clown", "Hunt for the Wilderpeople", and "Fruitvale Station". We explore HBO's entertaining ode to the Eighth Wonder of the World: Andre The Giant. Only one film can say it introduce Warren Beatty to the screen, and that one is streaming on Filmstruck now. Jess and Andrew take a look back at "Splendor in the Grass". After a couple rough weeks in a row with the wheel, Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie's Gothic classic "The Hunger" was a welcome assignment.
