We'd love to hear from you! Please send us a Text Message! From the New York Times: Quote: “Much Ado About Nothing is a feast! Joseph Papp's 1972 CBS television production of the New York Shakespeare Festival's staging of Shakespeare's rollicking comedy is brassy, bouncy, and all–together entertaining. Featuring Sam Waterston, Douglas Watson and the Tony Award performances of Kathleen Widdoes and Barnard Hughes, Papp's turn of the century version was critically acclaimed and enormously popular with audiences. Much Ado About Nothing originated at the open-air Delacorte Theater in Central Park. It was such a hit in the park that producer, Joseph Papp,  that fall, transferred the entire show to Broadway and there it became the longest running Shakespeare production in Broadway history. In 1972, 20 million people saw the broadcast of this CBS – TV IBM sponsored production of Shakespeare's classic tale of romance, mistaken identity, and the battle of the sexes. Probably more people saw it on that one night than had seen it previously in history.Presented by Watchfire Music https://watchfiremusic.com/ To access all of the episodes in our podcast, please subscribe to Watchfire Music's Theater Of The Imagination Subscription Series. Keith David is a classically trained actor, winning 3 Emmys out of 6 nominations as well as being nominated for a Tony award. He starred in the recently concluded TV series "Greenleaf" for Oprah Winfrey's OWN network. Upcoming films include "Horizon Line" with Allison Williams ("Get Out") and "Black As Night," for Amazon. In "Greenleaf" Keith portrayed 'Bishop James Greenleaf', the charismatic and God-fearing leader of the Calvary Fellowship and the patriarch of the family. The series followed the unscrupulous world of the Greenleaf family, their scandalous secrets and lies, and their sprawling Memphis megachurch. The series was praised for its push and pull dynamic, its hypocrisy, and its compelling characters. Keith's stellar performance was best stated by The Hollywood Reporter, "... Keith David ...is perfectly cast as Bishop Greenleaf. Whether he's playing to the congregation at the altar or getting conspiratorial in a smaller venue, this is an unusually great and meaty role for David." On the big screen, Keith co-starred with Chadwick Boseman in "21 Bridges". Prior credits include "Night School" with Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish and "Tales from the Hood 2". Additional titles include the Academy award-winning films "Crash" and "Platoon." He is widely recognized for appearing in the highly-acclaimed films Disney's "The Princess and the Frog", "Requiem for a Dream", "Men at Work", "They Live", "There's Something About Mary", and "The Thing." Other recent TV credits include an upcoming appearance on "Creepshow," "NCIS: New Orleans", "Blackish," MacGyver", and "Fresh Off the Boat". Earlier credits include "Community", "Enlisted", "ER", and "Mister Roger's Neighborhood". On Broadway, Keith starred in August Wilson's "Seven Guitars" and "Jelly's Last Jam" for which he garnered a Tony Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical. Keith's work as a voice actor has made him a household name. His rich and powerful voice has been featured in national commercials, award shows, documentaries, video games, and animation. His work in narration has earned him three Emmys for Ken Burns' "Jackie Robinson", "The War", and "Unforgivable Blackness - The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson". Some of his other voice acting credits include countless fan favorites such as "Adventure Time", "Bojack Horseman," "Rick & Morty", "Spawn", and "Gargoyles". Keith has lent his voice to many video game titles. Recently he portrayed the character "Spawn" in the reboot of the "Mortal Kombat" video game. Other appearances include the "Halo" series (games 2, 3, and 5), the "Saint's Row" series (games 1, 2, and 4), as well as the "Mass Effect" series (games 1,2, and 3). Born and raised in New York by his parents Lester and Dolores, Keith became interested in the arts at a very young age. After appearing in his school's production of "The Wizard of Oz", he knew this was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He enrolled in New York's High School of the Performing Arts and continued his studies at The Juilliard School. After graduation, he was immediately hired by Joseph Papp as an understudy for the role of Tullus Aufidius in William Shakespeare's "Coriolanus." His work with Mr. Papp and the New York Shakespeare Festival launched his incredible career. In addition to his versatile acting and voiceover work, Keith is also a remarkable singer. He's has been touring in 2 shows, "Too Marvelous for Words", in which he portrays the legendary singer Nat King Cole, and a show about the incredible Blues singer Joe Williams, "Here's to Life." In this episode, Penny Orloff and I will discuss her life journey as a performing artist who at a young age had been told that if she followed her dreams, she would be alone and penniless. At the age of 60 she found herself homeless and living on her friend's couch when she was asked a pivotal question… What's wrong with money? Penny now has a portfolio worth over 7 figures!   Penny Orloff is a professional Life Coach and Fairy Godmother. Throughout March of 1982, in often cold and wet conditions, thousands actors and demonstrators gathered at a portable stage in midtown Manhattan in the heart of the theater district. For weeks they shouted and sang and pleaded in front of an empty Morosco Theatre to protest its impending demolition along with other historic venues, which were to be replaced by a huge hotel and theater complex. Along the way, some of the biggest names of the stage and screen offered their support as well like Tony Randall, Liza Minnelli, Robert Redford, Susan Sarandon, and Christopher Reeve. But one of the biggest voices in this protest was The Public Theater's founder and producer Joseph Papp, who wanted to stop this destruction and actually preserve these beautiful and historical venues. In this introductory episode, we'll learn about the significance of five theaters (the Morosco, Bijou, Astor, Gaiety, and original Helen Hayes) that were all demolished to make way for what would become the Marriott Hotel and Marquis Theatre in what critics have called “The Great Theater Massacre of 1982.” Listen on your favorite podcast app! --- Closing Night is a production of WINMI Media with Patrick Oliver Jones as host and executive producer. Dan Delgado is the editor and co-producer, not only for this podcast but also for his own movie podcast called The Industry. Blake Stadnik composed the theme music, and Maria Clara Ribeiro is co-producer. Much appreciation goes to Joe Rosenberg and Mark Robinson for their insights, Tim Dolan for his support, Robert Armin who captured those street protests back in 1982, as well as the voice talents of our own Dan Delgado and Kate McClanaghan from Actors' SOUND ADVICE. Lin Shaye talks being named the Godmother of Horror, her wide range of acting roles, becoming the face of the Insidious franchise, and the time she auditioned for Jack Nicholson! About Lin: Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Lin Shaye loved “storytelling” so much that even as a child and knew that she was destined to act. She performed in plays at the University of Michigan and later was accepted into Columbia University's Master of Fine Arts program in acting, from which she graduated. While in NY she also studied with Uta Hagan, Stella Adler, and Lee Strasberg. After graduation, she worked with the best and brightest in New York theater, including the infamous Joseph Papp. Shaye made her film debut in New York in “Hester Street” where she portrayed a Polish prostitute, to her mother's chagrin. Thomas Howell.  The horror genre also found Lin starting with a cult favorite "Critters" and then on to Wes Craven's “Nightmare on Elm Street” which paved the way for more in the genre. She worked on a trio of movies with director Tim Sullivan:, “2001 Maniacs,” starring opposite Robert Englund, its sequel, “2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams” and Sullivan's "Chillerama". Shaye also starred in the cult classic “Snakes on a Plane” opposite Samuel L. Jackson, and the independent films "The Signal", "Jack Goes Home", "Abattoir", "Buster's Mal Heart" and "The Midnight Man" reuniting with Robert England.. In 2010 she found herself in the blockbuster hit “Insidious” directed by James Wan, which led to “Insidious Chapter 2, “Insidious: Chapter 3,” and the successful 4th film in the series "Insidious: The Last Key" in which Shaye had now had become according to James Wan: “the name of the franchise.” She also starred in Sony's “The Grudge" directed by Nicolas Pesce and the feature "Dreamkatcher" which she served as an executive producer. Shaye served as a producer and starred opposite horror icon Tobin Bell in “The Call” directed by Timothy Woodward. She most recently starred in “Ted Bundy:American Boogeyman” and next appears in the film “Frank & Penelope”. Fifty Key Stage Musicals: The Podcast

HAIR COMPOSER: Galt MacDermot LYRICIST: Gerome Ragni, James Rado BOOK: Gerome Ragni, James Rado DIRECTOR: Tom O'Horgan CHOREOGRAPHER: Julie Arenal PRINCIPLE CAST: Lynn Kellogg (Sheila), James Rado (Claude), Gerome Ragni (Berger),  OPENING DATE: Apr 29, 1968 CLOSING DATE: Jul 01, 1972 PERFORMANCES: 1,750 SYNOPSIS: Claude, a young American, is called to serve in the United States army to fight the Vietnam War and questions whether he will go and fight for a war he sees as unjust, or flee the country and become a fugitive of the law.  A commentary on American hippie counterculture of the late 1960s, Hair established a new genre of rock musicals and broke ground in its portrayals of sex, sexuality, nudity, and drug use. Several of the songs from the show became chart-topping anthems. James Rado and Jerome Ragni's musical's opening at the Public Theatre allowed its controversial form and content to prove their marketability before a more mainstream Broadway run. Elizabeth Lara Wollman explores how Joseph Papp fostered the show and how his relinquishing of the rights altered his idea about commercial musicals, the staging of Gerald Freeman versus Tom O'Horgan, and why the musical became a red herring in the development of rock musicals. Elizabeth L. Wollman (Ph.D in Ethnomusicology, The Graduate Center, CUNY) is a professor of music at Baruch College, CUNY. Her research and teaching interests include the stage musical, the commercial theater industry, canonicity, historiography, failure, sexuality and gender, and the cultural history of New York City. She has published articles on the relationship between gender stereotypes and rock radio programming, the impact of the economy on the development of the Broadway musical, the critical and commercial reception of rock musicals, and New York's theater scene in the 1960s and 1970s. She is the author of The Theater Will Rock: A History of the Rock Musical, From Hair to Hedwig (University of Michigan Press, 2006), Hard Times: The Adult Musical in 1970s New York City (Oxford University Press, 2012) and A Critical Companion to the American Stage Musical (Bloomsbury/Methuen Drama, 2017). “Politics is like theater: if you can't appreciate the little victories, you'll never get the big ones.” Crystal Field has overseen victories large and small during her over 50 year tenure as Artistic Director of the Theater for the New City (https://theaterforthenewcity.net), and she details many of them on today's episode of Backstage Babble. Among her fascinating stories: what it was like to work with Elia Kazan, the playwright who threw a stink bomb in the audience of his own play, the song in Promenade that was written about her, a deep dive into the many theories of acting she's learned over the years, a mistake made by Joseph Papp, what she learned from Ellen Stewart, the mission of her theater and how it has changed, why boards are a vital aspect of any theater, and so much more. Crystal is truly an inspiration, and you won't want to miss the chance to hear her words of wisdom.

Get ready to "say a prayer" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 2002's Dance of the Vampires on episode nineteen of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES Based on the Roman Polanski film The Fearless Vampire Killers, Dance of the Vampires follows Professor Abronsius as he attempts to prove the existence of vampires in Transylvania while his bumbling assistant Alfred falls for innkeeper's daughter Sarah, unaware that she is being pursued by the mysterious Count von Krolock. The musical features a book by Jim Steinman, Michael Kunze, and David Ives and music and lyrics by Jim Steinman. Academy Award-winning film director Roman Polanski was inspired to adapt his cult comedy for the musical stage after being approached to work on a theatrical production of Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. Composer Jim Steinman and book writer/lyricist Michael Kunze were ultimately chosen to collaborate based on both of their previous bodies of work, with Steinman literally being chosen by the director after putting 5 of his preexisting songs into a rough outline by Kunze (all of which remained in the final version of the show, including the hit song "Total Eclipse of the Heart"). The show, then known as Tanz der Vampire, originally opened on October 4, 1997 in Vienna, Austria where it ran for over 2 years. A new production opened in Germany following its closing and has played somewhere in the country almost consistently to this very day. Because of that, Tanz de Vampire is one of the most successful musicals in European history. From its premiere, English producers were seeking to bring the show to English-speaking countries. Composer Steinman was no stranger to the theater scene in New York, having spent five years under the professional wing of New York Shakespeare Festival founder Joseph Papp in the early Seventies. After briefly considering a West End run, it was decided to bring the musical (now titled Dance of the Vampires) to Broadway instead. After several failed attempts, many rewrites, and replacements on the creative team, Dance of the Vampires finally opened December 9, 2002. The Broadway version of the show was critically lambasted and the work of lead performer Michael Crawford was reviewed particularly harshly. When the reviews came out, Jim Steinman made a show of his disapproval of the project by not attending opening night and publicly distancing himself from the show.  On January 25, 2003, after 56 performances, Dance of the Vampires closed. According to The New York Times, it was "one of the costliest failures in Broadway history", losing roughly $12 million, easily eclipsing the infamous musical Carrie.   Original Broadway Cast Michael Crawford as Count Giovanni Von Krolock Mandy Gonzalez as Sarah René Auberjonois as Professor Abronsius Max von Essen as Alfred Ron Orbach as Chagal Leah Hocking as Magda Liz McCartney as Rebecca Asa Somers as Herbert Mark Price as Boris Erin Leigh Peck as Zsa-Zsa E. In an award-winning career that has encompassed TV, film, stage and concert work around the globe, Betty Buckley is probably best known as the quintessential musical theatre actress.  Whether she’s breaking your heart with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Memory” in her Tony-winning turn as Grizabella the Glamour Cat in CATS, bringing down the house with “The Writing on the Wall” in a gender-bending performance in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, or simultaneously frightening and moving an entire audience as religious fanatic Margaret White in the cult-classic musical CARRIE, a Betty Buckley performance is one that remains indelibly etched into one’s mind and soul. Buckley’s film roles include Ms. Collins, the gym teacher in Brian dePalma’s 1976 classic CARRIE, country singer Dixie Scott in Bruce Beresford’s TENDER MERCIES (which features her soul-piercing rendition of the Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe winning song “Over You”), and has regularly been featured in the films of M. Night Shyamalan.  She has been seen as a guest star on dozens of popular TV series, was a regular for three years on HBO’s OZ, and also played the lead role of Abby Bradford for four seasons on the seminal 1970’s family drama EIGHT IS ENOUGH.

All In All With Stacy Keach Stacy Keach is an American actor and voice actor. He has played mainly dramatic roles throughout his career, often in law enforcement or as a private detective. His most prominent role was as Mickey Spillane’s fictional detective Mike Hammer, which he played in numerous stand-alone television films and at least three different television series throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The role earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination in 1984. Keach has appeared as the lead in films such as Fat City and The Ninth Configuration. He has also performed as a narrator for programs including CNBC’S American Greed (2008–) and various educational television programs. Comedic roles include Ken, the father of comedian Christopher Titus in the FOX sitcom Titus (2000–2002), and as Sergeant Stedenko in Cheech & Chong’s films Up in Smoke (1978) and Nice Dreams (1981). Keach won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for the television miniseries Hemingway (1988). An accomplished pianist and composer, Keach composed the music for the film, Imbued (2009), directed by Rob Nilssen, a celebrated film festival favorite, in which Keach also starred. He has also completed composing the music for the Mike Hammer audio radio series, “Encore For Murder”, written by Max Collins, directed by Carl Amari, and produced by Blackstone Audio. But it is perhaps the live theatre where Keach shines brightest. He began his professional career with the New York Shakespeare Festival in 1964, doubling as Marcellus and the Player King in a production of Hamlet directed by Joseph Papp and which featured Julie Harris as Ophelia. He rose to prominence in 1967 in the Off-Broadway political satire, MacBird, where the title role was a cross between Lyndon Johnson and Macbeth and for which he received the first of his three Obie awards. He played the title roles in Henry 5, Hamlet (which he played 3 times), Richard 3, Macbeth, and most recently as King Lear in Robert Falls’ modern adaptation at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, which Charles Isherwood of the NY Times called “terrific” and “a blistering modern-dress production that brings alive the morally disordered universe of the play with a ferocity unmatched by any other production I’ve seen.” Mr. Keach’s stage portrayals of Peer Gynt, Falstaff and Cyrano de Bergerac, and Hamlet caused the New York Times to dub him “the finest American classical actor since John Barrymore.” Keach is an inductee of the Theater Hall of Fame and was honored with a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019. Of his many accomplishments, Keach claims that his greatest accomplishment is his family. He has been married to his beautiful wife Malgosia for twenty-five years, and they have two wonderful children, Shannon Keach (1988), and daughter Karolina Keach (1990). Website Link:

Born in Long Island, New York, Fichtner spent his early years as an army brat on a military base. After completing high school, he studied criminal justice in college before moving to New York City to shift his focus to acting. By 1988, Fichtner landed his first major acting job, playing Josh Snyder/Rod Landry in the daytime drama, As the World Turns. Five years later, he landed a recurring role on the series Grace Under Fire playing Ryan Sparks, and started working on feature films such as Malcolm X (1992), Quiz Show (1994), Strange Days (1995) and Heat (1995). As he slipped from role to role, his chameleon ability provided wonderful characters, but was rewarded by an audience who couldn't recognize him from picture to picture. In 1997, his name became a bit more familiar to moviegoers after playing Kent, the blind astronomer in Contact . Strong performances in Armageddon (1998), Go (1999), Passion Of Mind (2000), and The Perfect Storm increased his popularity. No stranger to the stage, Fichtner has starred in a number of off-Broadway productions including Raft of Medusa, The Years, Clothes for a Summer Hotel and Machinal and was a member of the Circle Repertory Theatre in New York. He starred in productions at the Manhattan Theater Club and Joseph Papp's Public Theatre. He became a household name for TV viewers after playing the mysteriously creepy Sherrif Tom Underlay in ABC's sci-fi drama Invasion during the 2005/6 season, followed by a regular role as FBI Special Agent Alexander Mahone in Fox-TV's hit series Prison Break. Back on the big screen, he played a supporting role in Elysium (2013), starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, and in the reboot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014). Most recently, he appeared in the thriller St. Sebastian (2016), the apocalyptic sequel Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), the drama Last Days of Summer (2016) and 12 Strong (2018).

She has worked theatrically off-Broadway, regionally, and done two soap operas as a regular. Both A-list features she worked on were flops which was tragic considering they were with Garry Marshall and Warren Beatty. She”d been hoping either of those two might guarantee more successful films. Oh well. Like every other actor, she is still available for hire. So despite working stage tv and screen, she remains relatively unknown except to some daytime fans who remember her copious tears she’d daily on ABC or NBC Favorite Career Highlight: JT Walsh said I was a great actress. With more than 200 years of combined theatre experience among them, our guests - stage veterans Philip Bosco, John Cullum, Marian Seldes and Carole Shelley - discuss the breaks that got each of their careers started; how they handle the situation on stage when they or their co-stars forget their lines; how they feel about serving as understudies; the audition process; their successes and failures; and they share stories of working with such other legends as Sir John Gielgud, Joseph Papp, Morris Carnovsky, Lee J. Cobb, George C. Scott, Geraldine Page, George Cukor, Myron McCormick and Ruth Gordon. "Stage Veterans 2009" also includes a short tribute to the late Robert Prosky, who appeared on the prior "Stage Veterans" edition of "Working in the Theatre" in 2005.

Just after returning from a year-long sabbatical, Manhattan Theatre Club artistic director Lynne Meadow (who steered the organization to Tony wins for Love! Valour! Compassion!, Proof and Doubt) talks about what she did and didn't do during her hiatus and explains how she shared planning for last season and the coming year with interim artistic director Daniel Sullivan. She also recalls her childhood as a stage struck youth in New Haven, including her performance in a new Maltby & Shire musical when she was only 12 years old; her struggle to be accepted into the directing program at the Yale School of Drama; her first experience at the Manhattan Theatre Club and how she came to be named its artistic director; the play she couldn't get the rights to until Joseph Papp agreed to co-produce with MTC; the impact of MTC's successive venues (East 73rd Street, City Center and Broadway's Friedman Theatre) on the company's repertoire; and the company's long history with playwright Terrence McNally and the controversy that surrounded the late 90s production of Corpus Christi.

"Sunday in the Park with George"'s Michael Cumpsty talks about the challenges of performing in the Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical, how the script and score match the pointillism of George Seurat's paintings, and why he'd like to call in sick just one night during the show's run. He also recalls the single day in his youth when his family's theatrical heritage was fleetingly revealed to him; describes how his passion for theatre evolved from his upbringing in England and South Africa through his training in North Carolina; remembers being selected by Joseph Papp for the "Shakespeare core" at the New York Shakespeare Festival in the late 80s; shares an assessment of his own musical skills in shows including "42nd Street" and "1776"; considers his roles in the Michael Frayn dramas "Democracy" and "Copenhagen"; and chronicles his continuing work at New York's Classic Stage Company as both leading actor and director. Original air date - March 14, 2008.
