Andrew Leslie is encouraging us to first take a step back from practical concerns and reflect on the beauty and wisdom of the bible's teaching about manhood and womanhood. In much contemporary debate about gender we focus on practical questions about what different people can do. However the head of Moore Theological College's Doctrine Department says the picture of gender in the beginning is not an arbitrary divine imposition that comes with its own set of arbitrary rules and instructions. Rather, the man and the woman together – and only together – irreducibly different and yet one inconceivable without the other, created a microcosm of God's own very being and character and glory, summing up the wisdom and creative word of God.Andrew Leslie gave the keynote addresses at the Priscilla and Aquila Conference in Sydney. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau managed one chaotic term under U.S. President Donald Trump, and he's made it clear he'd prefer to continue working with current President Joe Biden. But with the Republican primaries favouring Trump, a divided electorate and a U.S. election this fall, Trudeau faces the possibility of another Trump White House. One that's likely much more unpredictable and isolationist than the first Trump administration. Earlier this month, at a campaign rally, Trump suggested NATO countries that don't spend enough on defence would be left to defend themselves if Russia were to attack. His comments sent shock waves throughout Europe and North America, with experts and politicians warning that undermining NATO undermines the security of all member countries. On today's show, we talk to experts with first-hand knowledge on what a second Trump presidency could mean for Canada and what we should do to prepare. In this episode: Canada's former ambassador to the United States David MacNaughton, Canada's former ambassador to NATO Kerry Buck, Queen's University professor emeritus of political science and author of "Canada Alone" Kim Richard Nossal, and retired Lieutenant-General and former Liberal MP and parliamentary secretary for Canada-U.S. relations Andrew Leslie. Hosted by Althia Raj. Some of the clips this week were sourced from: CTV, CBC, Global, CPAC, CNBC, PBS, Fox, CP24, and the Associated Press. This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Althia Raj and Michal Stein and mixed by Kevin Sexton. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel. Suggested Readings: What a Donald Trump victory would mean for Canada's economy Donald Trump's dangerous agenda: Editorial NATO chief hails record defence spending while warning that Donald Trump's remarks undermine security Joe Biden says Donald Trump sowing doubts about U.S. commitment to NATO is 'un-American' Donald Trump stands by remarks about not defending NATO members after backlash
Chief of Defense Staff says it's impossible to cut a billion more dollars from our defense budget. We are short 15,000 solder's and have no ammunition. In this week’s episode, Stephanie Dueñas and Russell Shoemaker immerse themselves in the sensory watercolor world of the prolific artist and writer Charles Burchfield: from his early psychedelic Golden phase, through his Regionalist period, and finally, the works he made toward the end of his life after revisiting those Golden Phase paintings. They explore what exactly drove the vibrant works that bookended his career spanning several decades. You can find all the images we discuss on our website at https://www.artslicepod.com/ or our instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/artslicepod/ Charles was just a small town boy, born and raised in Ohio. He was known as a lunch pale artist, clocking in Monday through Friday and spending time with his family and dogs on nights and weekends. While his paintings sold enough to support his family, even during the Great Depression, something was unresolved in his artistic career . . . something that had been unresolved before he became the beloved Regionalist. Toward the end of his career, his splice-of-life watercolors transcended into multi-sensory and psychedelic landscapes vibrating with the songs of crickets and the buzzing of telephone wires. Stephanie and Russell find out that the answer to "Was this Mr. Rodger’s - type figure popping LSD in the woods? Or was he so deeply connected to the nature all around him?" Our Art Pantry of the week is Watercolor. A special thank you to Andrew Leslie who voiced the words by Charles Burchfield. It was supposed to be a routine mountain bike outing - but for Andrew Leslie, the day ended up anything but. He was riding Wellington's Makara Peak last year on a trail he'd done before, but failed to navigate a drop off - crashing off his bike and crushing his spine. He was choppered to Burwood Hospital's spinal unit in Christchurch, put in an induced coma and doctors told his family he was tetraplegic and to prepare for him to be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. But after four months of intense rehabilitation, Andrew managed to walk out of the hospital. He joins Kathryn to talk about his miraculous recovery.
