“This gentleman, he was training and he said, “Hey, show up at my parents' ranch. I'm running a five-mile loop, run as much or as little as you want during the night, just would love to have company. If you could bring your favorite aid station food item, that'd be great.” So there was about 20 of us that showed up. Some people ran one loop, other people ran a couple loops and then sat down cracked open a beer cheered on the rest of us, and there was about four or five of us that ran until three four in the morning.”Gretchen Walla is a race director in Washington who loves the community and taking opportunities when they present themselves. As can be the case, sometimes being involved in a community presents opportunities and Gretchen has seized those over the years to grow our trail-running community. She's been involved with several race organizations, The Trail Running Film Festival, and of course she operates Walla Trails and Community. While touring with The Trail Running Film Festival Gretchen got to meet so many passionate folks around the U.S. and that opportunity to meet such excited trail runners grew her love for the sport and community even more.“The stories we have from that U.S. tour, we were like this poor indie rock band that was showing up at shows, sometimes playing for seven people and then other times sold out shows like Cleveland, Ohio. Shout out to the Cleveland community. But it was so much fun because I got to meet so many different trail-running groups all over the US.” Road trip to the trail mecca of Cleveland anyone? They also touch on some of the systemic issues that the BIPOC community faces with feeling welcomed on the trails and in running groups in general. The stoke is high for the greater Boston run scene as these ladies bring a passion and joy for running to the table that is super infectious and I can't wait to see where they take the Trail Sisters Boston club in the coming months and years. Rebecca Roehm never dreamed that she would be running for the fun of it. Growing up in Ohio, she played basketball and tennis and always considered running as a punishment. In 2016, the only open treadmill at the gym jump started her foray into running. With the help of a friend and a new pair of running shoes, Rebecca signed up for her first 5k. Less than 18 months later, Rebecca found herself as one of the featured runners on Season 4 of Becoming Ultra where she completed the Minnesota Voyageur 50 miler. The experience of the Becoming Ultra project has led Rebecca to continually challenge herself. One of the lessons she took away from the experience was that it is important to do hard things. When asked why she runs ultras she responds, “If you aren't challenging yourself, you aren't growing as a person.” Some of her notable races include the New York City Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Zion 50k, Bandera 100k, the Javelina Jundred 100 miler, and most recently the Last Annual Vol State 500k.  When Rebecca is not working or running, she is traveling with her husband, volunteering, and co-leading the local Portland Oregon chapter of Trail Sisters. One of her passions is increasing the participation of women in sports, especially trail running. She hopes that her experiences as an athlete can inspire others to try something new and do hard things. We had a lot of fun talking to our friend, Rebecca.  This lady is one of the most supportive people we have ever met. She embodies everything the Becoming Ultra community stands for.  Rebecca takes us from her first Ultra, a 50 miler to most recently the Vol State 500k and everything in between. She talks about chasing cutoffs and not getting discouraged by finishing DFL or even a DNF.  She is wise enough to know there is value in every experience.  Listening to Rebecca will inspire you to do something big!

Caitlin grew up in Oakland, CA and now lives in San Francisco, CA with her boyfriend, Daniel after going to college in the Midwest. She grew up playing soccer, then rugby, then discovered Australian Rules Football after graduating from college in 2015. She made the national Australian Rules Football team in 2019 and was going to compete in Australia in 2020 in the International Cup, but then COVID shut the world down.  The outdoors have always been a huge part of Caitlin's life. Her parent's first took her backpacking when she was 3 years old and did numerous trips in the Sierra Nevada's that Caitlin eventually came to love (although at first, she thought her parents were torturing her and depriving her of a normal childhood). She discovered distance running in 2014 when she was training to hike across Spain but didn't have the time to go on longer hikes so resorted to running. In 2016, she came to the realization that you can not only hike on trails, but you can also run on them! She ran her first trail marathon in 2017 and applied to Becoming Ultra at the end of 2021 right after she had foot surgery for a foot injury that had sidelined her from running for a year and a half. Since then, she's re-fallen in love with trail running and has found amazing communities though Becoming Ultra and Trail Sisters. She's run two 50Ks, an “ultra” Ragnar, and has her first 50-mile race in Oregon in early July.  Ever wonder where exposing your children to the great outdoors can lead?  Caitlin grew up with parents who exposed her to lots of camping, hiking, and backpacking in amazing places.  It is so fun to hear her talk about her adventures throughout her life, which includes a very special hike with her Dad.  Caitlin shares her experience with training for her first ultra and the disappointment of dealing with an injury.  We also discuss her first 50-mile race at Mt. Hood (that she crushed by the way).  This is a fun, feel good episode.  I will leave you with one of Caitlin's favorite quotes that I cannot stop thinking about.  “Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire”.

Gina discovered an interest in running early on and her talent for the sport was recognized by the high school running coach. The coach was onto something: Gina set a school record in the mile and set numerous cross-country course records. She went on to be a champion DIII runner in college. Post-college, Gina began working in the sports industry, eventually focusing on the outdoor run/hike space. She also discovered a love of trail running and racing, which ultimately led her to becoming a sponsored athlete. All along the way, Gina continued to take note of the preferential treatment male runners and racers received, in every facet of the trail running world. After numerous efforts to create change within the system, she decided to create to something herself. Trail Sisters was born. What started as a passion project at Gina's kitchen table quickly grew to a large community of women who share experiences and support to get out on the trails. Over the past six years, Trail Sisters has developed into a leading voice in the trail running and hiking industry, helping establish a space that values and includes women. Gina emphasizes that the power of the community is rooted in the collective efforts of all of the individuals who have been involved in Trail Sisters, in whatever capacity that is: "I feel like we're very powerful when we work together and we support each other," says Gina. This episode is sponsored by The Feed, the largest online marketplace for your sports nutrition, offering the brands you know and love, from Skratch Labs, Clif Bar, to Maurten, plus their athlete customized supplements called Feed Formulas. Thank you for listening, friends! We've got a fun episode today with my friend and fellow trail runner, Aileen. Aileen has completed several epic adventures in the mountains, from crushing local peaks to solo explorations of Moab, Utah to finishing as second-place female and 16th overall at the 2020 Orcas Island 100 mile ultramarathon in torrential rain. She's written great articles for the Trail Sisters community that can be found here: https://trailsisters.net/author/aileenmckeown/ We have a wide-ranging conversation about outdoor adventuring, taking solo road trips, the new frontier of raising a puppy and what got her into running just four short years ago. Aileen reminds us that there are so many things to be grateful for, that time outdoors is self-care, and just how far our own legs can take us. Enjoy! The 2021 Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run starts today. Two days before the run an important meeting took place where the event announced a new policy to increase women's participation. Starting in 2022, the percent of women's entrants will be no less than the percent of women's lottery applicants. Darcy Piceu who won the the race three times (2012-2014) is now a Hardrock 100 board member and she's returning to the race this year as a participant. What better time to revisit episode 36 (originally published May 31, 2019) where Darcy and Trailsisters.net founder Gina Lucrezi spoke about the challenges and opportunities to make the sport of ultrarunning more inclusive and equitable for women. Original Show Notes Darcy Piceu and Gina Lucrezi share thoughts on this important topic. "We're in a real interesting time right now. If I do nothing else in the sport, it would be to raise awareness." This is a different conversation for Fastest Known Time, and quite worthwhile. Darcy Piceu and Gina Lucrezi share thoughts on this important topic. "We're in a real interesting time right now. If I do nothing else in the sport, it would be to raise awareness." This is a different conversation for Fastest Known Time, and quite worthwhile. Trail Sisters has established 5 recommended practices for races: 1. Equal podium spots 2. Equal prize money and awards 3. Women's-specific swag (not just unisex) 4. Menstrual products at aid stations (events over a Half Marathon) 5. Opportunity for Women at the front of the Starting Line https://www.trailsisters.net https://www.outsideonline.com/2312071/ultrarunning-has-gender-problem https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/12/opinion/nike-maternity-leave.html http://time.com/5594356/alex-morgan-world-cup/

Host Russ Rizzo interviews Gina Lucrezi and three of her Trail Sisters and takes questions from a very fun audience at Berkeley Park Running Company in Denver. Joining the panel are Heidi Kumm, Sarah Pizzo and Sandi Nypaver. In a couple of short years, Lucrezi has amassed a following of tens of thousands of tank-top-and-trucker-hat-wearing women who feed off each others’ energy and encouragement and take to the trails all across the country - and increasingly the world. The panel discusses everything from running on menstruation cramps to safety on the trails and tips for running hills.

After seeing a lack of female representation in the world of trail running, Gina Lucrezi decided to give a voice to women on the trails. She founded Trail Sisters originally as an online journal, an outlet to share the female perspective. In 2 years that online journal grew to 400 articles with 100 contributing writers - all of whom are female! She saw a need, and took the action, which inspires me so much!!! The Trail Sisters platform quickly evolved from digital mediums only, to a growing community championed by women who are ambassadors to the outdoors, and for women’s opportunity in sport. These Trail Sisters are found across the USA and abroad, in the suburbs and in the cities.Check out more at trailsisters.net or contact Gina directly at info@trailsisters.net. This week's episode is an extremely powerful example of the power of perseverance, gratitude, and a "learning how to suffer" mindset. Maudie Jordan is a wonderful, incredibly positive, and completely badass mountain athlete from the Pacific Northwest. She has completed multiple 100 milers, climbed numerous mountains, and spends her times exploring all sorts of wild areas. In this episode, she shares the ups and downs of her journey, what it's like to run a 100 miler with anemia, and how failure led her to personal growth and how she learned to embrace an adventurous life. Most importantly she teaches us perseverance. She set a goal to finish a 100 miler, failed four separate times, quit running, rediscovered her love of trail running, and eventually accomplished her goal! Her story is so incredibly inspiring and my hope is that we can all apply some of these lessons to our own lives. This was one of my absolute favorite conversations! Maudie is well-spoken, hilarious, extremely positive, and authentic. Enjoy! We interview Gina Lucrezi, founder of a women's online running community called Trail Sisters! Gina’s roots stem from short distances on the track, but after a few wild jaunts on the trails she was convinced to trade in her beloved speedy flat asphalt for rugged desolate mountain terrain. Her proudest achievements include a 5th place finish at the highly competitive CCC 100k, completing the Western States Endurance Run (100 miles), winning a USA Track & Field 10k Trail Champion title, and being awarded a 10 time NC-double A All-American while in college (including one NCAA National Title). Off the trail, Gina has spent 10 years working in the outdoor industry with a focus in the marketing arena. Gina's athletic and work experiences were the reason she was compelled to start a women's trail running online journal: TrailSisters.net! Questions we ask Gina include: How did you get your start in running? What was the transition like from running on the track to the trails? What are some main differences between road running and trail running? What advice do you have for strength training to avoid injuries while trail running? Have you worked through injuries in your career? Tell us about your experience running the Western States Endurance run! Do you train for most of these races alone? What role does community play in training? How did you create Trail Sisters and what was your mission behind this? Take us back to when you first started… Listener question from Chelsie: First off, she wants to say a giant thank you for all the work you’ve done! Chelsie says, “As a female runner just getting into trail running, Trail Sisters is everything to me.” She is also curious: is Trail Sisters different now from how you envisioned it to be? Anything new and exciting in your life currently? What’s making you thrive? What advice would you give your younger self? What does being a Strong Runner Chick / Trail Sister mean to you? How can listeners connect with you? Special thanks to InsideTracker, a biomarker performance testing system and one of our SRC Retreat sponsors.
