In this deeply inspiring episode, we sit down with Sue Bowles, a childhood trauma survivor and the founder of the Dare to Believe movement. Sue's powerful mission is to guide others through their struggles and help them heal from past trauma, including her own experiences with childhood rape and eating disorders. Sue is the author of This Much I Know, where she discusses how trauma can shape our lives and how we can reclaim our strength through faith and healing. Her work challenges listeners to live boldly and authentically, despite the challenges of the past.      A core theme of this episode is the increasing loneliness many experience in today's technology-driven world. Sue addresses how technology, while connecting us on the surface, has led to a significant decline in essential interpersonal skills. The over-reliance on digital communication has made basic human connections—such as eye contact and conflict resolution—much more difficult, especially in personal relationships. This disconnect creates barriers to authentic interaction, leaving many people feeling isolated and misunderstood. Sue delves into how this issue is not just personal, but also affects professional environments, where communication breakdowns can hinder collaboration and productivity.      Another crucial topic is the widening generational gap in emotional understanding, particularly in digital communication. Sue highlights how younger generations, immersed in technology, may struggle to interpret emotional nuances in online conversations, leading to miscommunications that can exacerbate feelings of loneliness. This episode explores how assumptions about others' availability, fueled by constant connectivity, often lead to feelings of neglect and self-devaluation. Sue encourages listeners to rethink how they interact with others, both online and offline, emphasizing the importance of nurturing meaningful relationships in a digital age.      Mental health advocacy is another vital aspect of Sue's work, and in this episode, she tackles the ongoing stigma surrounding mental health. While society has made strides in addressing mental health issues, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many still struggle to seek the help they need. Sue shares how public figures and influential voices can make a difference by opening up about their own struggles, which in turn encourages others to do the same. She emphasizes that mental health conversations must move beyond the surface level, especially in the workplace, where employers can play a pivotal role in supporting their employees' well-being.      In this episode, Sue also discusses how businesses can create healthier work environments by addressing mental health through comprehensive support programs. She stresses that instead of focusing on disciplinary actions, companies should aim to understand the root causes of employees' struggles, leading to a more empathetic and productive work culture. Sue explores how effective leadership can greatly enhance employee engagement and morale, as highlighted by a Gallup report. Simple acts of connection, such as sharing meals or fostering open dialogue, can significantly improve team dynamics and overall job satisfaction.      A particularly compelling segment of the episode focuses on the impact of self-talk on mental health and interpersonal relationships. Sue explains how negative self-talk can damage self-esteem and prevent people from forming meaningful connections with others. By transforming these harmful narratives, individuals can improve their mental health, reduce loneliness, and foster deeper relationships. Sue shares her own experiences with overcoming negative self-talk as part of her healing journey as a transgender and rape survivor, offering listeners a profound message of hope and resilience.      Throughout the conversation, Sue's message is clear: healing begins with believing in yourself and daring to take chances, no matter what challenges you've faced. She uses her platform to inspire others to embrace their stories, trust in their abilities, and use their personal experiences to make a positive impact on the world. Whether you're struggling with trauma, battling loneliness, or seeking to improve your mental health, this episode offers valuable insights and practical advice for anyone on a journey of healing and self-discovery. For people grappling with mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, there may be a belief that offering support to others who are facing similar struggles is not possible until they have completely overcome these issues themselves. However, in this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we had a conversation with Sue Bowles, who revealed why this perception is flawed. As a matter of fact, it only takes being one step ahead of someone to assist and encourage them in navigating their mental health journeys. You don't need to be fully cured to make a significant positive impact in someone else's life. Sue Bowles is a survivor turned thriver as an author, speaker, and Master Certified Life Coach. Having done the hard work of healing from a childhood rape, an eating disorder, other sexual assaults, and considering suicide, Sue now defines the effect the life-altering events have on her. The events no longer define Sue; she defines them. “You only have to be a step ahead to help the person behind you” is the bedrock to the value Sue brings. She founded My Step Ahead and is the “Chief Instigator” behind the new Dare to Believe Movement, whose purpose is to nurture others to ‘dare to believe that you matter,' knowing that nothing changes until that bedrock belief is solidified. Whether speaking on a podcast, a stage, or one-on-one, Sue's enthusiasm is contagious, shining the light of hope wherever the listener needs. In today's episode we cover: The first step to breaking the stigma around mental health struggles How helping others keeps you encouragedThe healing power of owning your storyThe coping mechanisms Sue used to cope with traumaWhat to do when you're having a dark dayHow Sue's faith helped her through her mental health strugglesThe impact therapy can have on your mental healthThe importance of honoring yourself The difference between ownership and stewardship We hope you enjoyed our conversation with Sue! In this episode, I speak with Sue Bowles, a master certified life coach, trauma survivor, and speaker. And I had Sue on the show because I felt so closely akin to her, her journey, and her mission. I knew that bringing her on would be a difficult conversation, which I assure you it was, so just a little fair warning as we get into this, it's a bit of an emotional conversation. But more importantly, I wanted to bring her on to help solidify and show the truth of the path it takes to go through this journey of healing. I will not share her story right now because I was hoping you could listen to the show, but the information that she will share about her growth through some incredibly traumatic experiences even impacted me. You have to think how many times I've done this; it's insane. And it impacted me where I got emotional in this conversation because you sit and you watch the power that an individual has inherently to do that thing that we do, the hardest thing to learn, to love yourself, to get out of the vortex, to let go of the past, and ultimately to be unbroken. Sue is a great testament to that, to what it means to make yourself rise despite other people in the world trying to put you down. And this is a very inspirational conversation, and I hope that if you take anything away from this conversation today, it's this, right now, at this moment. You have the ability to create massive change in your life, but it starts with acknowledging the truth. Sue is a phenomenal guest, and this is an awesome conversation! This week on Talk Recovery Radio This week on Talk Recovery radio we have 2 great guests, first on the show Sue Bowles author of "This Much I Know...The Space Between" a book about sexual abuse and other traumas, second guest on the show is Dr. Geri-Lynn Utter, PsyD author of "Mainlining Philly: Survival, Hope, and Resisting Drug Addiction". You can catch it all on Talk Recovery Vancouver's Facebook page live Thursday at noon-1pm PST.  Sue Bowles I am a Master Certified Life Coach to encourage others in their journeys, telling them the same thing I have lived and learned: it's okay to not be okay, and NO ONE is 'too far gone.' You matter and your dreams can be reality now! We all have purpose and sometimes we just need someone to come alongside us to whisper hope and encouragement. Maybe the issue is self-confidence, relationships, stress management, anxierty, goals, or something else. I would welcome the opportunity to walk alongside you in your journey of discovery. I look forward to hearing from you. For decades, making a difference in someone's life was something I desired but always seemed 'just out of reach.' It was 'good enough for everyone else but not for me.' I believed I was too broken, too wounded, too everything, to have anything to offer anyone else. The garbage of life was trying hard to smother the glowing ember underneath. Hope was elusive, discouragement a constant companion, and purpose only a dream never to become reality.  Sound familiar? I get it. After decades of downplaying the events of my life and their effects on me, I finally reached out for help. That started the long, arduous process of thawing my heart and starting to face my pain. It has not been a journey for the faint of heart. To willingly face all that had stolen my life up to that point was not a process I wanted to endure but needed to. It has been a long journey to recovery, not just from my eating disorder, but from my depression, anxiety, and PTSD from being a childhood rape survivor. Everyone wants to make a difference in some way but often believe they have nothing to offer because they don't have it 'all figured out.' I'm here to say all it takes to help the person behind you is to be one step ahead. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be that for others. Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn This Much I Know...The Space Between Life hurts, and layers of hurt leave us feeling beyond help. Yet, the human spirit won't let us quit. So how do we navigate the distance between hurt and healing? In "This Much I Know...The Space Between," Sue Bowles shares her pursuit of healing from childhood sexual abuse and other traumas resulting in an eating disorder, constantly struggling to answer the question "Why?""When we're talking about our stories, the space between is that gap, that time of questioning and anger and confusion and doubt and...whatever else you can think of. It's the gray area of uncertainty, of wondering what the point is. "Do you believe you are too far gone for anyone - even God - to be able to make a difference? Do you wonder if your life will ever matter? Find hope in the space between. Buy the book Here   Dr. Geri-Lynn Utter, PsyD. I am a clinical psychologist who works with individuals struggling with drug addiction and severe mental illness. I'm the child of parents who suffered from drug addiction. I have also witnessed countless addicts who lived and died in my parents' wildly dysfunctional and often criminal inner circle during my childhood in one Philadelphia's roughest areas. My view of addiction was formed by witnessing its effects on real people long before I cracked a book on the subject. The familial and personal challenges I was confronted with during my youth helped me become a clinician with rare, real-world insight into addiction. I want this documentary to educate people in an effort to destigmatize those who are struggling so we can begin to offer the appropriate treatment. Both of my parents struggled with heroin addiction and opioids throughout my childhood. Rather than joining in and using drugs and engaging in criminal behavior with my family, I went in the opposite direction; I knew I deserved a better life. My experiences have left scars on my soul, but I see them as marks of wisdom that have shaped my understanding of human behavior. I'm the kind of person who tries to understand what makes people do the things that they do. That curiosity and desire to help others is what drove me to pursue my career as a psychologist. Website| Facebook | Twitter Mainlining Philly: Survival, Hope, and Resisting Drug Addiction It's only 20 miles from the Mainline suburb of Philadelphia to the area known as Kensington, but it may as well be a world away. The Mainline is one of Philadelphia's most tony sections, famous for mansions and tennis courts and Princess Grace Kelley. Kensington is a decaying, poverty-stricken, drug-drenched blight, a place some can't escape, yet others escape to as they sink into a world of drugs and despair. Meeting Philadelphia native Dr. Geri-Lynn Utter, PsyD. for the first time, it would be easy to assume she's the product of the elite schools and glossy social life of the Mainline. But in fact, Geri-Lynn grew up in Kensington, her father and her mother both lifelong drug addicts. She saw firsthand the torment of addiction. The violence of the ""life."" The despair that there could be no way out except death by overdose. Mainlining Philly is the harrowing story of how Geri-Lynn survived the grim alleys of Kensington and became a respected mental health professional. Her unique insight into the nature of addiction gives her the tools to offer solutions to those addicted and the families who love them. At times terrifying, startling, and hilarious, Mainlining Philly is a ride on the wrong sides of the tracks that you won't be able to put down and you will never forget. Buy the book here

“Getting Unstuck.” (Trigger warning: this interview contains a conversation about childhood sexual assault, eating disorders, and grief.) As we go through life, disappointments, tragedy, pain, and unfair situations will stop us in our tracks. God doesn't want us to discount or ignore what we have been through. He cares about us and the weight of what we experience. He is there to empower us to move beyond the mentalities, habits, and darkness that keeps us from experiencing and enjoying this life with the peace, joy, grace, and strength He provides. If you are stuck, God wants to help you get unstuck and see the hope for your now and your future #unstuck #hope #Christianpodcast #EmbracingAbundantLife #Overcomer #EALPodcast #ASparkMinistries Guest Sue Bowles author, survivor, speaker, life coach Website Suebowles.com The Spaces Between Social Media FB @ SueBowlesCoaching For other inspiring content, visit ASparkMinistries.com.
