Beverly Engel is back, and I'm so grateful to talk with someone who's spent decades helping people break free from trauma-driven relationship patterns. If you've ever felt stuck in the same story - same red flags, different partner - you're not alone. In this episode, Beverly brings clarity to the messy, courageous work of breaking free and putting your past in your past. Beverly is a renowned psychotherapist and author of 27 self-help books, including her latest, Put Your Past In Your Past. In this conversation, we get into how hard it is to break lifelong patterns, especially when you were never taught how to feel your feelings, let alone trust them. But that's where the work is and that's how we begin to change everything. Healing is messy. It's uncomfortable. But it's also liberating as hell. Here's what else we discuss in this episode: What trauma reenactment actually is and how to begin interrupting the cycle (7:56) How to create a “triggers list” and begin connecting the dots between past pain and present-day reactions (10:51) Why you can't heal what you don't feel and what to do when the emotions finally surface (18:44) The fear of naming your trauma in relationships (and how to work through it) (40:08) Tools for building self-compassion and protecting yourself moving forward (43:40) Learn more about Beverly Engel: Beverly is an internationally recognized psychotherapist and expert on trauma. She has written 27 books on the related subjects of abuse, shame, and empowerment, including The Emotionally Abusive Relationship and Healing Your Emotional Self. It's not broken. It's the system we built." - Jeff Woodward. Join me in welcoming my first guest on this podcast, Jeff Woodward. Jeff is the program manager and Outreach & Navigation Program Manager at Mental Health & Addiction Association of Oregon. Jeff Woodward was very candid with me about what led him from the corporate world to the world of homelessness, the suicide of his wife in 2009. Our discussion takes us through the emotional state people can find themselves in after a tragedy, to life on the streets, our perceived perception of mismanagement in Oregon that has led to the homeless crisis, the current state of Portland, Oregon. Jeff also speaks of Apple in downtown Portland hiring a peer specialist to help with the homeless situation near the Downtown Portland Apple Store. We continue on speaking of our sons' mental illnesses, Wapato, now known as Bybee Lakes, non profits in Oregon, greed, dirty money, passions, and then throw in a bit about Harley Davidsons and we have an episode that is gripping, tragic, hopeful and is filled with twists and turns. I offer my thoughts on TPI, also known as Transition Projects that, I feel, gave me false hope concerning my son that led up to his untimely death. Today, for some reason, I actually had another another topic to discuss, but I really felt strongly that I needed to do an episode on taking accountability for my actions. It's no longer scary to me today. It used to be really scary to take accountability, but I think it's just another step in growth. And I know many of you may be thinking, Oh gosh, I don't want to admit everything I've done. Well, you know, it's part of who you are now. It's part of who I am now. Everything this happened to me, everything I allowed to happen, everything I did, I have chosen to work for the best and to benefit me so I can grow. I don't want to stay stuck like where I was. I don't want to stay is broken as I was when I first broke. I have a secondary text line now where you can text me your ideas, if you think you might want to be a guest on Digging Through Dominoes, or perhaps, a member of a live panel. This episode takes a deep dive into healing the shame of childhood sexual abuse. National expert Beverly Engel is Melanie's guest as the two of them explore some of the many unhealthy consequences of shame. An acclaimed advocate for victims of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, Beverly's a psychologist and best-selling author who's published 22 books, including four bestsellers on emotional abuse. Her most recent book is Freedom at Last: Healing the Shame of Childhood Sexual Abuse. Even though the subject matter may feel dark and heavy, the reality is that millions of people, both men and women, suffer deeply from the shame of having been sexually abused as children. And that shame can become an insidious self-saboteur, holding you hostage, never allowing you to live a full, rich life. There are many, often hidden, negative health consequences of having experienced childhood sexual abuse (CSA). As Beverly writes: “CSA survivors have a significantly higher risk of medical, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social difficulties. Systemic reviews have also specifically established that CSA is a risk factor for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dissociative patterns, sexual problems, relationship problems, sexual exploitation, intimate partner violence, suicidality, substance abuse, eating disorders, and educational difficulties. But all those effects and risk factors pale in comparison to one particular consequence of child sexual abuse—shame.” The very good news is that there is so much hope and healing possible, which is what the focus of the show is really all about. Bad things happen to very good people. When you understand how much can be done to heal the shame of those early childhood wounds, your life will change for the better, in ways you may not even be able to imagine at this point. As Beverly wrote in Freedom at Last, “being reminded of your own abuse is not necessarily a negative thing. This is because many former victims are in so much denial that being reminded of what happened to them can help them get out of denial, a major problem for many former victims. The more you can face the truth about what happened to you, the healthier you can become.” This episode takes a fearless look at the truth about what happened, and offers lots of ideas, suggestions, and evidence-based strategies to help folks begin the transformational journey of healing themselves into wholeness. Finally, please don't expect this to be a horrible downer of a show. These two women offer wide-open, heartfelt personal experiences and professional guidance into a taboo subject that must be openly talked about. For that is where the healing lives. After years of searching, Teri Anderson speaks of how she was able to recognize what the hole in her heart was and how it may have come to be. Listen to Teri's story and perhaps you may find some of the answers you've been searching for your entire life. By reading Jasmin Lee Cori's book, The Emotionally Absent Mother, Teri made realizations, looked further into her childhood, and is beginning to understand how impacted she was by her mother inability to be emotionally available. In this episode, The Holes Left By Our Mothers, we explore the topic of PTSD and how to identify and deal with the holes left by our mothers. We also discuss the importance of lifelong learning and how to overcome obstacles through internal family systems. PTSD affects everyone differently, so it's important that everyone knows about it and recognizes the signs and symptoms. This awareness month is a perfect opportunity to discuss PTSD and its effects with your loved ones. By working together, we can help to create a healthy and supportive environment for all affected by PTSD. In the podcast, Digging Through Dominoes, Teri shares her story of healing complex PTSD. Teri talks about the holes that were actually left by our mothers, how these holes led to C--PTSD, and how healing complex PTSD can be done. WOW! I didn't expect this one but it came at the right time and correlated nicely with Chapter 7 of The Emotionally Absent Mother by Jasmin Lee Cori on neglect and abuse. Listen to what happened when a family member opened up her can of abuse with me. The video version on the YouTube version of Digging Through Dominoes should be up tomorrow with her scathing, self centered, remarks, that I took screen shots of, inserted. We don't want any miscommunication, as I've noticed as common in my mother's family. I'm grateful though. Her attitude showed me the complexity of the environment my mother had grown up in. This video does not diagnose anyone with any disorder, only points out similarities with Jasmin Lee Cori's book, The Emotionally Absent Mother. It made me see the situation my Mother grew up in differently and how she, and her sisters, in my opinion, were scarred. Healthy people just don't do this. affiliate links: COMPLEX PTSD From Surviving To Thriving by Pete Walker https://amzn.to/3RCx7rN The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel van der Kolk: https://amzn.to/3TLagfv Overcoming Toxic Parenting by Rick Johnson: https://amzn.to/3wXlBPO Healing Your Emotional Self by Beverly Engel: https://amzn.to/3epY0RD The Emotionally Absent Mother https://amzn.to/3KNfUtu DD Social media links Digging Through Dominoes website (audio): https://diggingthroughdominoes.podbean.com/ Apple Podcast: ttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/digging-through-dominoes/id1619200152?i=1000557547966 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/69onD9bgg30EYvixz8DJFz?si=086dc9095e664d3b iHeart https://www.iheart.com/podcast/338-digging-through-dominoes-95565843/ Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZGJlYW4uY29tL2RpZ2dpbmd0aHJvdWdoZG9taW5vZXMvZmVlZC54bWw Amazon Music/Audible: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ff3b62d1-4acb-4a3d-8bd8-89f5aba3ace6 Player FM: https://player.fm/series/digging-through-dominoes You can use this RSS feed in other Podcast platforms: https://feed.podbean.com/diggingthroughdominoes/feed.xml YouTube main Channel URL for Podcast playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE4W_QJYGZH7d2wyB-0gDe5fAjI2cSi4J Digging Through Dominoes Youtube Video Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4A3V8sW0X5c1QZGqQfBqXw Digging Through Dominoes Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DiggingThroughDominoes Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/diggingthroughdominoes/

It was a lazy morning as I scrolled through my YouTube feed. There were three videos that caught my attention. One was entitled, "Weird Things Only Narcissists Do," by Rebecca Zung. The next was, "When Narcissists Paint You As Unhinged," by Dr. Ramani. The last, feel was a true gem. I thought about it all day. It was by Jordi Universe and entitled, "To You, A Year From Now." Jordi's message hit me hard and stayed with me throughout the day. It was compelling, beautifully done and asked the one question that leads to many more, "What if?" Teri's experience in a behavioral unit in Portland, Oregon. One morning she found herself in the behavioral unit of Adventist Hospital in Portland, Oregon. To illustrate, Teri tells her personal story of how a series of traumatic events packed into a short amount of time led her to a breaking point that ended up with her in a behavioral unit. Her story details the how the desire to have control and find a moment of peace in a chaotic life led her to having a feeling of not having any control and the fear that accompanied it. This is a story that mirrors so many of the experiences that people face on the daily basis but don't get talked about. Teri's hope is that her sharing her personal story will allow you to see that you are not alone in your struggles. The night before she had just wanted to sleep, to get off the merry-go-round of her life. When she awoke she had no idea where she was and when she realized she was in the behavioral unit, she had no idea how she was going to get out. This began Teri's journey to understanding, being misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder 2, and finding her true diagnosis of C-PTSD. It's not easy living anxiety, PTSD, depression, or trauma of any kind. It's even more difficult doing it alone. This podcast is here to show you that YOU ARE NOT ALONE! How Teri Was Misdiagnosed With Bipolar Disorder. So many people tout the benefits of therapy, but few discuss the feelings of anxiety, doubt, paranoia, and even fear that arise before pouring you soul out to a licensed professional. In this episode, Teri discusses her journey through therapy and relives her experiences of transitioning though different therapists. She opens up about the doubts and discomfort that she experienced leading up to her sessions, including questions like: How do you open up when you've never been able to trust anyone before? What does my hair/posture/mannerisms say about me? She discusses the good, bad and the ugly of transitioning through therapy. From her initial therapist, who invoked feeling of distrust and judgement, to a better therapist that unfortunately prescribed an incorrect diagnosis. Finally, Teri describes how she landed with her current psychiatrist and how his dedication has led to a more clear and accurate diagnosis. If you've ever experienced doubts about therapy or received less than ideal therapy, you will be able to relate to this episode, but still leave with a sense of encouragement to keep going until you find someone who sees you, understands your story and will work to help you be the person who wish to be. In this episode I refer to a book by Beverly Engel called “It wasn't your fault”. It was a book brought up in a group therapy session that I and two others had read. I thought it would be a good topic for a podcast. Her conclusions are based on her 30 plus years as a psychotherapist and as a victim of abuse herself. She believes that fault will manifest in Shame and that Shame can be negated by what she calls Self-compassion.I do not agree with her findings, but I respect her hard work and frankness in her own life story to aid the reader in utilizing her solution.I don't put much weight into self-help books when things like sex abuse and traumatic events have altered lives forever. This is just my opinion, and I mean no harm or any disrespect to Beverly Engel or anyone who finds books like this to help them through the storm.
What burdens are you carrying because you can't forgive yourself? If Jesus has forgiven you, do you also have to forgive yourself? Do you feel stuck there? Trapped in a cage of shame? I've been to therapy, I've been to counseling, and I was the host of a Christian radio show for 11 years. I'm attempting through this podcast to grow in Bible knowledge. When it comes to self-help, I've probably heard it all. So when I saw this article from The Gospel Coalition titled, “Say No to the Gospel of Self-Forgiveness,” my antenna went straight up. Self-forgiveness is like this core doctrine in our therapeutic culture. Writing in Psychology Today, psychotherapist Beverly Engel says, “I believe that self-forgiveness is the most powerful step you can take to rid yourself of debilitating shame.” But here's the vital question for Christians: Can you point to one example in Scripture of someone forgiving themselves? Well, I did the work for you and the answer is no. And guess what? That's incredibly liberating! You CAN'T offer yourself forgiveness. It doesn't work! You cannot release yourself of guilt. So what DOES Scripture say? We look at one example today in Psalm 51.If you would like to dive deeper into this, or other verses in the Bible, if you have a verse you would like to submit to have included in a future episode if have questions about the Bible that you would like answered in a bonus episode, or simply want to connect with me... text VERSED to 88474 or click hereAlso included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well. Do you or someone you know apologize all the time? This can stem from several dynamics – if you're in an abusive relationship currently or there was trauma in your childhood where you've grown up believing that the fault when relationships or events go sour is somehow all yours. There's also the presence of anxiety or more specifically OCD, or what's termed “the spotlight effect”. We'll talk about all of these and more. So we'll talk about how to catch yourself from that unnecessary “I'm sorry” and change it into something that notices when things aren't quite right, but doesn't indicate a one-down position. The listener voicemails for today share two distinct ways of thinking about aging. I wrote a post called “Turning 58” years ago now – and both of them had strong reactions. The fact that they both were sent to me in a short period of time was ironic – and it would be easy to label one “Good” and the other one “bad.” I'd like us to listen instead with compassion and see what could help both. So welcome to this episode of SelfWork sponsored by BetterHelp – and let's talk about over-apologizing and as always, what to do about it. Importnat Links: The spotlight effect research described. Most people are familiar with physical abuse, but when it comes to emotional abuse, victims often second-guess themselves. According to Abuse Recovery Expert Beverly Engel, it is easy to miss the signs of emotional abuse due to deceptive tactics used by abusers. One important thing to remember is that victims should never feel that they deserve the abuse or feel ashamed of their situation. In this episode of From Betrayal to Breakthrough, Beverly discusses what usually occurs in an emotionally abusive relationship and how we can be compassionate toward ourselves to begin the healing process. About Guest/Topic Beverly Engel is an internationally recognized psychotherapist with 35 years of experience. She is also a licensed marriage and family therapist and an acclaimed advocate for victims of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. Beverly authored 23 self-help books, many of which have been featured on national television and radio programs, as well as national print media. Her latest book is titled, Escaping Emotional Abuse: Healing the Shame You Don't Deserve. In This Episode Who is Beverly Engel? [0:10] What is emotional abuse? [2:10] What are some examples of emotional abuse? [2:49] How do you know if someone is being emotionally abused? [4:11] Can men be emotionally abused and if so, what does it look like? [10:44] Scenarios that show women abusing men [12:15] How does shame come into play in emotional abuse? [15:08] What is the difference between guilt and shame? [17:38] Is it possible to abuse someone unintentionally and if so, how? [20:20] Perspectives on lying, projecting, gaslighting [22:13] What is the 5 Step Shame Reduction Program? [26:43] What are some examples of self-kindness? [29:24] …and many more Quotes “Emotional abuse is like brainwashing. It slowly whittles away the victim's self-confidence, you know, self-esteem, even their perceptions of themselves.” [7:17] “There's research that shows that emotional abuse is actually more physically and emotionally damaging than physical abuse” [10:24] “You gotta be careful. Victims tend to take all the blame and abusers tend to blame everybody else.” [13:51] “A lot of abusers go to therapy once their partners have left and that's just to get her back but some go to therapy because they're truly shocked at their own behavior. They're truly shocked at their children witnessing their behavior and they truly want to change.” [21:51] ”Don't blame or shame yourself if you're not ready to leave and if you're never gonna leave, okay? Don't add that shame to the shame that you are already feeling. There are good reasons why you are afraid.” [30:10] Resources Mentioned Beverly Engel's Website Heal My Shame PBT Podcasts Post Betrayal Syndrome Quiz PBT Institute Membership Community Trust Again: Overcoming Betrayal and Regaining Health, Confidence and Happiness Trust Again Free Gift

— “Self-forgiveness is the healing balm you need to heal your wounds and your shame.” In the Emotionally Abused Woman, therapist Beverly Engel introduced the concept of emotional abuse, one of the most subtle, yet devastating forms of abuse within a relationship. Now Engel exposes the techniques the abuser uses to break your spirit and gain control—and guides you in how to free yourself from the shame that can keep you from the life, and the love, that you deserve. By using your deepest fears against you, the abuser strips you of self-esteem, dignity, and humanity—making you feel unworthy and utterly powerless to escape. But you possess a potent tool with which to combat shame: self-compassion. In these pages, Engel shows you how to access it. Using her highly effective Shame Reduction Program, she helps you jumpstart the process of recovery by offering specific steps to help you heal and regain self-confidence. An invaluable resource for both men and women who suffer from emotional abuse, as well as therapists and advocates, Escaping Emotional Abuse is a supportive, nurturing guide for anyone seeking to break the chains of shame, and gain the emotional freedom to create healthier, lasting relationships. In Femtastic's first-ever Spotlight Series, we focus this and the previous episode on bringing awareness to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) or Domestic Violence (DV). The months of COVID-associated isolation, fear, and economic anxiety have exacerbated IPV. In today's episode, we focus on emotional abuse, an equally (and as our guest argues, more) damaging type of abuse that can occur in all types of relationships, from romantic to parent-child, to workplace and beyond. Today's guest is Beverly Engel, a psychotherapist who specializes in emotional abuse. Beverly details what emotional abuse looks like, how it shows up in all types of relationships (romantic relationships, queer and trans relationships, family relationships, etc.). Focusing mainly on romantic and familial relationships, Beverly discusses the tactics abusers use, the typical "profile" of an abuser, how abusers use shame to control their victims, and the red flags to spot early-on in a relationship that a partner may be emotionally abusive. She also discusses how COVID-19 worsens emotional abuse. Beverly offers resources for those in emotionally abusive relationships and for friends and family who suspect their loved one may be in an emotionally abusive relationship. [TW: domestic violence, sexual assault, physical violence, emotional abuse] A sad but true fact: more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the US will experience intimate partner violence (IPV). Half of all female homicides are from a current or past male intimate partner. And these are just the estimates we have among cisgender people and those who report their abuse. But with the compounded stress and isolation of COVID-19, IPV has reached a tragic, all-time high. In Femtastic's first ever Spotlight Series, we focus the next two episodes on bringing awareness to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) or Domestic Violence (DV). The months of COVID-associated isolation, fear, and economic anxiety have ignited IPV to new and often deadly ends; specifically, domestic violence homicides have increased dramatically. Today, we focus on the type of abuse more commonly associated with IPV: physical violence. In the next episode, we focus on emotional abuse, an equally damaging type of IPV. To discuss physical IPV today, Femtastic's guest is Kathryn Jacob, President and CEO of SafeHaven of Tarrant County, a DV shelter in Fort Worth, Texas. Kathryn has been working for over 20 years to shine a spotlight on the issue of domestic violence. As an expert in this field, she has a wealth of knowledge and leads the industry to develop early intervention techniques to reduce DV's fatal outcomes. Today on the podcast, Kathryn discusses why and how IPV occurs, how it shows up in all types of romantic relationships (straight; queer; among trans and non-binary folks, etc.), misconceptions around IPV, how COVID has exacerbated it, and what you can do to help. This month, I am kicking off a mini-series on abuse on the Divorce Survival Guide podcast. In this episode, Beverly Engel joins me to talk about emotional abuse. She is the author of Escaping Emotional Abuse: Healing from the Shame You Don’t Deserve. Emotional abuse is a deep and insidious attack on the soul. It causes the victim to question the truth about themselves, to doubt their worthiness as a person, and even the capacity to love. Shame is often not spoken of, or acknowledged on both sides of an emotionally abusive relationship with anyone. Today's episode puts the spotlight on this component of emotional abuse, for both the perpetrator and the recipient. My guest, Beverly Engel, wrote in her most recent book, Escaping Emotional Abuse: Healing From the Shame You Don't Deserve: "Shame is the most destructive aspect of emotional abuse and it can be the most difficult to heal."Sometimes people stay in abusive relationships BECAUSE they feel that leaving one is shameful. After all, you chose to enter it, if it's a romantic relationship. Know this: emotionally abusive people pose as potential soulmates to lure you into giving them control over time. It's not your fault! You couldn't have known, in most cases. So, this episode will be ABSOLUTELY affirming for you, and can give you a new perspective that is empowering. HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY'S EPISODE:Differences between conscious and unconscious abusersHow we accept shame when we have had childhood abuse, childhood emotional neglect, or adverse childhood experiences Differences between shame and guiltWhy shame is so hidden and, therefore, damagingThe link between shame and narcissismWhy Beverly Engel suggests that shame's counter emotion is pride GUEST: BEVERLY ENGEL Beverly Engel is an internationally recognized psychotherapist and an acclaimed advocate for victims of toxic relationships and sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. While physical abuse is an attack on the body, emotional abuse is a deep and insidious assault on the psyche and the soul. It causes the victim to question the truth about him or herself - to doubt one's worthiness as a person, one's ability to satisfy a partner, even the capacity to love. Today's special guest Beverly Engel is an internationally recognized psychotherapist and an acclaimed advocate for victims of toxic relationships and sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. She is the author of 23 self-help books, including 3 bestselling books on emotional abuse: The Emotionally Abusive Relationship, The Emotionally Abused Woman, and Encouragements for the Emotionally Abused Woman. In this episode we welcome Beverly Engel, a licensed marriage and family therapist of 35 years. Beverly Engel is an internationally recognized psychotherapist and an acclaimed advocate for victims of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. On the show we identify what emotional abuse actually is, what is normal in a world that has such a skewed understanding of abuse given the vast amount of the population who has sustained it, and a prescription for those who are in emotionally abusive relationships or those on the outside of one seeing their friends are family trapped.
What are the signs of emotional abuse? Can you be a victim or a perpetrator and not even know it? In today's podcast, we welcome psychotherapist Beverly Engel who explains how emotional abuse can sometimes slide under the radar and may even be mistaken as care. In truth, it's all about control. Heal in place. Fill your still. Abandonment. During these unusual and uncertain times, I thought it would help to create mini-podcasts to share the resources I used on my healing journey in a more direct way. Most of us may be sheltering in place –with no distractions and also no escape. If you are like the old erratically busy me…this “stillness” may be torture. If you have woken up and are searching for a path to recovery or already on a healing journey…I truly hope these mini-podcasts resonate. I try to cover a lot of ground in a succinct way so you can heal in place and fill your still. My father physically abandoned me most of my childhood and my mother emotionally abandoned me my entire life. Living with repeated abandonment experiences created toxic shame and for me was a very destructive force in my life. The painful message I constantly received was: “You are not important. You are not of value." This is the pain from which I needed to heal. Emotional abandonment occurs when parents do not provide the emotional conditions and the nurturing environment necessary for healthy development. I like to define emotional abandonment as "occurring when a child has to hide a part of who he or she is in order to be accepted, or to not be rejected." When parents are critical, dismissive, invasive, or preoccupied, they're unable to empathize with their child's feelings and needs. The child will feel misunderstood, alone, hurt or angry, rejected, or deflated. Children are vulnerable, and it doesn't take much for a child to feel hurt, abandoned, and ashamed. Breaking the cycle means being unlearning and relearning, re-parenting ourselves and employing self-compassion. Thanks to decades of attachment studies, we know that healthy effective bonds guarantee the development of a fulfilling life filled with healthy relationships, healthy self-esteem, and the security and trust of others. On the other hand, insecure attachment sets us on a path towards insecurity, low self-esteem and lack of trust towards those around us.Please visit John Bradshaw and Beverly Engel - they are wonderful resources.https://www.johnbradshaw.com/about-john-bradshawhttp://healmyshame.com/

March 7th was the 20th anniversary of her car accident. She was left with a Traumatic Brain Injury and other injuries. During the recovery process, she was flooded with memories she had suppressed about abusive childhood. She ended up having a nervous breakdown dealing with those memories and the emotional scars the experience left. The conclusion she came to is we all develop strategies to deal with whatever we go through in our lives and at some point, those strategies -- that helped us to survive -- begin to actively hold us back because they no longer serve us or serve where we are now in our lives. Her examples would include things like perfectionism....an avoidant conflict style....to name a couple. Once she came to that realization she was able to begin the process of healing from my emotional wounds and taking control back over her life.
