Meet the Advocates: Martha Mosier, President and General Counsel of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties Kathleen Rebhan, CEO and Owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Elite Properties Gretchen Rosenberg, President and CEO of Kentwood Real Estate Having a passion for your community: Working for a luxury brand, Gretchen believes that “luxury” means treating everyone as vital, and the client's definition is often something else. She thinks it is essential to give back by building housing for the situationally homeless. Martha's agents had a passion for DEI, so they created an impact council. One of the initiatives they started was a first-time homebuyer fair that helps marginalized communities understand the path to homeownership. It's challenging for people to fill the requirements to meet government-sponsored programming. Women should join organizations to find a network of women who can help them understand what they need to do to reach their desired path. Leadership for women in real estate: The path for women in leadership is more available than ever. However, there are still glass ceilings we need to be mindful of when determining our actions. To be successful in real estate, you must have passion. Of course, you'll fail while juggling multiple obligations. However, you just need to pick them up and move on. Question your motives. If you want to enter leadership purely for the salary, you'll encounter many problems and challenges you might not be ready for.  Be patient. Set out the intention of being a managing broker at an office, network, work hard, and the opportunity will come. The importance of mentorship: Great mentors are the reason successful people become successful. When you have a support network, you can do and overcome more.  Once you arrive at a certain place in your career, take the elevator back down to bring more people up.  As leaders, it is our responsibility to ensure other women are afforded the same opportunities we were given.  Overcoming biases in the professional world: When you get started in business, there's a youth bias, but put in the work and be patient, and you'll overcome it. There's a gender bias in almost every position, and how you approach that matters. You can either reeducate their biases or determine it isn't worth your time.  Instead of becoming angry by the bias you encounter, use that to fuel and motivate you to prove them wrong. What advice would the advocates give to women today? Don't judge yourself based on what society said you should be. Instead, be prepared to work hard because success isn't handed to you. Have a passion for what you do. Many people go into things for money, but they quickly burn out. Do something you have a passion for, and economic success will come. Don't follow the monetary world, and don't throw yourself into a career at the expense of what matters - your family and friends. Instead, spend time with those you love. You've heard sooo many of my clients share their stories on the podcast, you've read about their transformations and how they rave about their experience. You've literally heard it in their voices as they share... THEY FEEL EMPOWERED, LIBERATED FROM THE STRUGGLE, AND LOVING THEIR RESULTS. If you pay close attention, you'll see that a consistent common denominator is this: THEY'VE LEARNED THE SKILL OF SELF-COMPASSION. → They've learned how to be kind to themselves, and actually supportive OF themselves >>>  which is the TOTAL OPPOSITE of what most of us learn as women: to be constantly critical and ‘never good enough'. I've talked about emotional eating MANY times on the podcast, but today we're zero-ing in on a really important one, that deserves its very own episode: SELF PITY. I can't even tell you HOW MANY TIMES I emotionally over-ate and sabotaged my goals DUE TO FEELING SELF PITY. Self pity about my weight, self pity about my body, self pity about relationship stuff, work stuff (the list goes on!)… or even just self pity about my life in general. And whenever I felt this way, I didn't know any other thing to do, but to eat about it as a temporary means for distraction. THIS is the case for most women. It completely explains WHY it's possible for someone to know exactly ‘what to do' to lose the weight, but then emotionally eat to the point of even regaining all the weight they've lost. Because when it comes to emotions like this one, we just haven't known any other way... UNTIL NOW ;) I can remember SO CLEARLY moments of my life where I TRULY felt and believe that:  -Food was the only ‘good thing' in my life. - Food (specifically, popcorn at the end of the day…) was the ONLY thing to ‘look forward to'.This is something that comes up A LOT as I'm coaching my clients inside THE LAST 10 Program. One of the skills you've heard me talk about before (but I break down in this episode in a new way) is: EMOTIONAL COURAGE. In this Episode I specifically examine Self-pity as part of our human emotional experience- HOW to navigate that. We take an even  closer, microscopic look at Self-Pity vs Self-Compassion, and moreover HOW TO ACTUALLY OFFER YOURSELF COMPASSION IN YOUR MOST CHALLENGING MOMENTS as a wayyyyy more effective strategy. (pro tip: Self-compassion is a powerful antidote for self-sabotage!) For me, Compassion is like being able to offer LOVE from myself TO MYSELF in moments when I'm feeling MOST uncomfortably challenged. HAVING THIS SKILL CHANGED THE COURSE OF MY LIFE. (not to mention, I also stopped rage eating which means I now maintain an 80 pound weight loss with ease, and joy and love...) I share a personal example and story from when I navigated being a brand new mom, and that infamous newborn stage. It was one of the HARDEST things I've ever done, it involved BOTH self-pity AND compassion. The game-changer was honing in on the difference between the two, developing the ability to generate self-compassion FOR YOURSELF, while also allowing for some self-pity as needed. So… if you find yourself feeling like ‘food is the only thing to look forward to' at the end of your day, your week, or overall right now in your life- Put in your earbuds. RELAX. ENJOY. Most weight re-gain and weight loss plateaus happen because of emotional over-eating. Another way to say this: Using food and eating in order to 'manage' certain emotions. Here's a quick list of the kinds of emotions women tend to over eat about: Stress, overwhelm, pressure, feeling 'burned out', shame, worry, uncertainty, failure, boredom, feeling 'not enough', urgency, dissatisfaction (...& more!) It's an ineffective coping mechanism, but yet it makes sense because as humans our brains are wired to want to seek pleasure & avoid pain (Psychology's Motivational Triad) Which is why, one of THE MOST important skills for losing 'the last 10' pounds (insert your goal here) is the essential life-skill of allowing emotions. EMOTIONAL COURAGE is the willingness and ability to be with and allow the full spectrum of human emotions. What I often see is that as my clients are developing the skill of experiencing their emotions (instead of eating about them) they only sorta--kinda, and for limited-amount-of-time allow the emotion, which leads to eventually emotionally over eating when this is the case. For these reasons, it's important to be able to self-assess if you're FULLY allowing the emotion you're experiencing OR only kinda--sorta, for-a-limited-amount-of-time. In this episode, I teach you a BRAND NEW CONCEPT: THE FULL SIT. You'll be able to use this concept as a tool for checking in, and assessing if you are fully allowing your emotional experiences, or not. In this episode we'll be speaking with Dr. Pam Jarboe about how to build emotional courage.  Dr. Pam Jarboe practices chiropractic in Acton MA. Her career blossomed when she worked as an assistant for a chiropractor in 1986.  She soon traveled into Hale House in Harlem, NY with her chiropractor.  He began adjusting children who were drug addicted. Some of these poor children, born with AIDS, were abandoned as babies. They suffered greatly with many health issues as well as emotional problems. As they received adjustments, Pam witnessed them transform. They suddenly had less disease, less trauma. They transitioned from hiding under the beds, being terrified to be touched to jumping into her arms. Inspired by the many changes she witnessed in this practice, especially in children, she decided to attend Life Chiropractic University. She graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1995.

TITLE Being Real and Normalizing Our Human Experience GUEST Jen Perry, MSEd, MA, LPC EPISODE OVERVIEW What if we believed that we don’t always have to have our stuff together? The more real we can be, the more it allows others to be real. We need to normalize suffering, so we don’t think something is wrong when we are not constantly feeling exuberant.  We can accept that wounding happens. Misunderstandings and miscommunications are part of the human experience.  How do we embrace our feelings and not be wrong?  HIGHLIGHTS I want to break the shame and normalize having deep feelings I want to change the narrative around what may be labeled as unacceptable feelings We as therapists, often have shame that we have human experiences because we’re supposed to be “past” that Human life is a struggle If we’re wobbling, we freak out The more real we can be as therapists and healers, the more it benefits our clients We want to be mindful and intentional about self-disclosure in that it benefits the clients, and it’s not to meet our own needs We can do reality checks with clients if we self-disclose to see if it’s helpful How do we embrace our feelings and not be wrong? We need to accept that wounding happens We need to normalize suffering We want to ameliorate the suffering and know that wounding happens Sometimes we can over identify with the wound or live from the wound Misunderstanding and miscommunications are part of the human experience Good enough parenting—we just need to show up 30% of the time The Goddess of Never Not Broken She knows that she recreates herself every day She doesn’t have this expectation that she has it all together We don’t want to live our lives as nouns—in a constant state We want to live our lives as verbs, which is constantly changing We will bound back between the 2 states and accept the wounding PARTS Work or Internal Family Systems with Richard Schwartz We have a relationship with that part of you A part can despair We want to be self-led—which is soul, substance, clear and calm, compassionate When we get triggered or activated, a part takes over A part of the person is buying into that narrative of wounding How do you feel about the part? I feel bad for this part We can act from that part Being in it We can speak for that part A part of me feels…a part of me wants to … Healing comes from being in relationship with others who are doing their work There is power in being seen and heard and having someone who can hold space for us We often don’t know what’s possible if we haven’t experienced healthy relationships, so we recreate relationships that don’t work because we’re trying to work out something from the past GUEST BIO Jen Perry, MSEd, MA, LPC has been a psychotherapist for 20 years. Better Than Yesterday, with Osher Günsberg

I am so excited to be sharing my conversation with Susan David with you. Her book "emotional agility” was one of the books I devoured in the first few months of coming off of meds, as I tried to learn more about my head and about what’s going on when I get triggered with panic or rumination. The wide angle view of Susan’s work is that discomfort or indeed uncomfortable feelings is the price of admission to a meaningful life. When I first saw her Ted Talk, “The Gift and Power of Emotional Courage" which has well over 3 Million Views by now - this was like a revelation to me. I say to Audrey all the time - I have these moments where it’s like we’ve hit the “release” button on the pressure cooker - just one small string of words or an idea can free me from the swirling vortex of rumination. And when I first heard Susan’s hypothesis, this was like permission to have this discomfort within my body - and that indeed absorbing it and realising that not only was I bigger than it but also that it would pass - well that was incredibly liberating. Bear in mind that I needed to be on meds for a long time until I was able to hear such things and have them stick - when I was sick and experiencing psychosis it wouldn’t have mattered if A Harvard Ph,D psychologist like Susan David sat in my kitchen and told me this like she does today - it simply wouldn’t have mattered. But thankfully I have healed a lot and I’m getting about doing the daily work so that ideas and concepts like this can indeed stick in and make a difference to my day. In fact just this morning, Audrey and I were coming back from the airport after a lovely week away in Bali, when I did something I shouldn’t have done on three hours of sitting in a chair plane sleep. I opened twitter and saw an article claiming that the Trump administration was using an unstoppable and cataclysmic climate change projection of a 7ºC rise by 2100 was justification that car emission regulations weren’t going to make a difference to why not lift the restrictions and just go to town on emissions since we’re all going to die anyway. Now if you’ve read my book you’ll know that Climate Change was my trigger - and indeed the paranoid delusions I was experiencing convinced me that such a scenario as this projection was happening today and I was the only one that knew about it. So as I sat in the back of a cab, my body just teetering on the edge of sunburn and tan after a week reading my Yuval Noah Harari book in the sunshine, my wife texting the dog sitter trying to reunite us with Frank later that day, the familiarly cool and punishing stab of fear pierced my stomach. Crisp and precise, my intestines turned to macrame and my heart nearly bursting through my ears. I could hardly breathe and as I look at the peerless blue sky and a man walking past in shorts I feel the icky tendrils return into my brain, the blue sky is bad, it should be cloudy this time of year - why’s he wearing shorts? It’s supposed to be cold? These two things clearly mean this article is correct, fuuuck here we go… I’m suddenly completely disconnected to the present. I’m no longer in the cab, no longer with Audrey, no longer basking in the glow of a week in Bali lying around by a pool reading books with my lover. I’ve been hijacked and I’m now imprisoned in a cage of future fear that feels completely real in my mind, utterly disconnected with where my body actually is. So I go straight to my tools. Breathe. Get control of my breathing. Feel my feet in my socks. Get into this moment. Get into my body. Reach out and touch Audrey on the hand. When you don’t act, it’s usually because there’s something you don’t want to feel. But if you’re willing to feel anything, you can do anything When it comes to developing emotional courage, certain mindsets have to be in place in order to make headway. Peter Bregman says one of those things is the willingness to feel anything. He points out that when we don't act it is usually because we are afraid of what we will feel if we do take the action in question. But if you have already resolved that you are willing to feel anything you have to feel in order to accomplish the things that you care about most, then you will press through the difficult emotions with courage and ultimately reach your goal. If you are like me, his words resonate with you deeply because you know that they are true. Take the time to listen to what Peter has to share. It is 22 minutes well spent. If everyone on your team is moving toward multiple priorities, you can’t productively move forward together In today's world, most people allow themselves to take on too many things that they consider priorities and dilute their ability to care as deeply as they need to care about the things that truly matter. When this happens in the context of a team there is no way the organization can move toward the most important things on their radar because the members of the team are focusing on a myriad of things. In this conversation, Peter Bregman highlights the importance of getting everyone on the same page and headed in the same direction. It's the only thing that will enable us to get big things done through effective collaboration. Emotional courage is required in order to choose to shut off distractions and do what is truly important to you Peter Bregman doubts that there has ever been a time in the history of the world when distractions were so prevalent. He notes that in order for us to have our conversation, he had to turn off a number of notifications so that we would not be interrupted. That is just one example of the kinds of things we battle to maintain focus and productivity in the digital age. Peter says it requires emotional courage to make the decision to shut off the distractions and do what is truly important. We have to ignore the feeling of insecurity that arises when we consider that we might miss an important email or not be the first to respond to an issue.
