The Sickness is the System: When Capitalism Fails to Save Us from Pandemics or Itselfhe coronavirus pandemic, the deepening economic crash, dangerously divisive political responses, and exploding social tensions have thrown an already declining American capitalist system into a tailspin. The consequences of these mounting and intertwined crises will shape our future. In this unique collection of over 50 essays, "The Sickness is the System: When Capitalism Fails to Save Us from Pandemics or Itself," Richard D. Wolff argues clearly that "returning to normal" no longer responds adequately to the accumulated problems of US capitalism. What is necessary, instead, is transition toward a new economic system that works for all of us.“A blueprint for how we got here, and a plan for how we will rescue ourselves” - Chris Hedges“A magnificent source of hope and insight.” - Yanis Varoufakis“In this compelling set of essays, and with his signature clarity, intensity, accessibility and deference to historical and present perspective, Wolff has issued not just a stark warning, but concrete reasoning, as to why this time really should be different.” - Nomi Prins“One of the most powerful and incisive voices in America. As an economist he transcends that “dismal science”, he is a tribune of Main St, a voice of the people.” - George Galloway“Wolff clearly explains the ways that capitalism exacerbates unemployment, inequality, racism, and patriarchy; and threatens the health and safety of workers and communities - i.e., most of us.” - Jessica Gordon-Nembhard, Ph.D.“If you care about deeper measures of social health as Americans suffer the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, you will find here a wealth of insight, statistics, and other ammunition that we all need in the fight for a more just society.” - Adam HochschildThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

“You can criticize many things in the United States, but there are taboos and the number one taboo is that you cannot criticize Capitalism. That is equated with disloyalty…This story about Capitalism being wonderful. This story is fading. You can't do that anymore. The Right Wing cannot rally its troops around Capitalism. That's why it doesn't do it anymore. It rallies the troops around being hateful towards immigrants. It rallies the troops around “fake elections”, around the right to buy a gun, around White Supremacists. Those issues can get some support, but “Let's get together for Capitalism!” That is bad. They can't do anything with that. They have to sneak the Capitalism in behind those other issues because otherwise, they have no mass political support.”Richard D. The professor points out that they may even use the United States as a precedent. ‘Stain on Democracy': Tax Day Study Shows US Billionaires Now Own $4.7 Trillion: “We reject the narrative that this country cannot afford to invest in a better world.” An analysis released Monday to mark Tax Day in the United States shows that the country's 735 billionaires have seen their collective wealth soar by 62% over the past two years while worker earnings have grown just 10%, modest gains eaten away by the rising costs of food, housing, and other necessities. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/support

Welcome back to the Peaceful Political Revolution in America podcast. It has been pointed out on this podcast by more than a few people, that our Constitution is as much an economic or class document, as it was a political one. For starters, our colonial era Constitution was designed to protect the interests of the slavocracy, to favor the individual accumulation of wealth and property over the collective well-being of society. In short, the framers created a political system to protect their interests. We see the economic impacts of that system all around us. We can study the economic and social impacts this system has had on labor in America, on our natural resources and environment, our infrastructure, our foreign policy, and our communities. In America, money is to politics as wealth is to influence. The framers were well aware of that, and it is no wonder why they had a disdain for democracy.Richard Wolff's name has come up more than a few times in this podcast. His ideas have caught the attention of a lot of people. I thought it would be insightful to talk with professor Wolff about the relationship between democracy and capitalism because his message, more than most, suggests there may be a better and more democratic future for humanity. Richard D. Wolff is Professor of Economics Emeritus, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a Visiting Professor in the Graduate Program in International Affairs of the New School University, NYC. He is also the founder of Democracy at Work and host of their nationally syndicated show, Economic Update. If the Sickness is the System, we have some serious problems. Are we all still living and working under a modern form of slavery? Do we ourselves need to be emancipated? If so, how would we do that, and what kind of society would we create?More and more people are listening to Richard Wolff's message. His vision of democracy in the workplace is based on an extensive understanding of economics as seen through the lens of capitalism, marxism, and socialism, and he is here today to talk about his extraordinary new book, The Sickness is the System: When Capitalism Fails to Save Us from Pandemics or Itself.
In this episode of By Any Means Necessary, hosts Sean Blackmon and Jacquie Luqman are joined by Benjamin Zinevich, organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation and journalist for Liberation News to discuss how China managed to have only two deaths from COVID-19 in 2021 through its zero-COVID strategy, the stark comparisons between the Chinese and American responses to COVID and the failures of the American response, and the people-centered and educated response from China to the pandemic. In the second segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Will Merrifield, housing attorney in Washington, DC to discuss the end of a long struggle for housing in the Congress Heights neighborhood in Washington, DC, the intentional and active neglect by housing developers that left tenants in deplorable conditions, the developer's plans to build luxury apartments by pushing tenants out of affordable housing, and institutional actors pouring money into housing and keeping people unhoused and in unaffordable housing. In the third segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Justin Williams, co-host of Red Spin Sports to discuss the demonization of Antonio Brown after his outburst on Sunday and sports media's prioritization of team officials in crafting its narratives over that of players, the weaponization of mental health from Antonio Brown to Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka, and Ohio State football player Marcus Williamson claiming that Urban Meyer used a photo of Trayvon Martin to demonstrate its “no hoods” policy.Later in the show, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Dr. Richard Wolff, Economist and Professor at the New School University and author of the new book “The Sickness Is the System: When Capitalism Fails to Save Us from Pandemics Or Itself” to discuss the cruelty of the capitalist system and inflation as prices rapidly outpace wage growth, the flawed capitalist logic that's behind supply chain issues and how that exposes capitalism's inability to cope with problems like pandemics, and Joe Biden's myths about job creation in the aftermath of the aftermath of the market crash of 2020.

Brian Becker and Prof. Richard Wolff discuss the Supreme Court ruling overturning the federal eviction moratorium and putting 11 million people at risk of being thrown onto the streets in the middle of a pandemic. The rationale used by the court to issue this cruel edict is the essence of capitalism -- protect property owners' “right to exclude” at all costs. Richard Wolff is the co-founder of the organization Democracy at Work and the author of many books, the latest being “The Sickness is the System: When Capitalism Fails to Save Us from Pandemics or Itself”. Brian and Prof. Wolff begin a multi-part series on agriculture under capitalism. Under this system, the most basic necessity of life -- food -- is turned into a source of profit dominated by a smaller and smaller number of agribusiness corporations. Environmental destruction and enormous waste are built into the capitalist agriculture system while hundreds of millions around the globe still go hungry. We continue a series of discussions about the basics of Marxism, focusing today on the corporate-owned media. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the nature of work and the lives of working people in drastic ways. Millions of workers lost their jobs over the past year and a half, millions more saw their in-person jobs reoriented to remote work, possibly for good. While there is a lot of discussion right now about what the future of work will look like after COVID-19, it's important to understand how the pandemic accelerated existing trends in the economy that have been remapping the terrain of work and the makeup of the working class over the past half century. In this special video edition of Working People, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez talks with world-renowned economist Richard D. Wolff about what these trends tell us about the global evolution of capitalism and how we can forge a diverse working-class political coalition in the 21st century that is capable of building a political and economic system that works for all of us. Richard D. Wolff is Professor of Economics Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a visiting professor in the Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs at the New School in New York City; he is also the founder of Democracy at Work and host of their nationally syndicated show Economic Update. Today we continue a series of discussions about the basics of Marxism — a method for understanding and changing the world used by many of the great revolutionaries of modern history. We discus the Marxist understanding of the so-called gig economy. More and more workers are forced to make ends meet driving for Lyft or Uber, delivering food or an ever expanding number of irregular jobs. But far before smartphones and the internet, capitalism has long depended on precarious labor. Richard D. Wolff is Professor of Economics Emeritus, University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he taught economics from 1973 to 2008. He is currently a Visiting Professor in the Graduate Program in International Affairs of the New School University, New York City. Earlier he taught economics at Yale University (1967-1969) and at the City College of the City University of New York (1969-1973). In 1994, he was a Visiting Professor of Economics at the University of Paris (France), I (Sorbonne). Wolff was also a regular lecturer at the Brecht Forum in New York City. Professor Wolff's weekly show, Economic Update with Richard D. Wolff, is syndicated on over 70 radio stations nationwide and available for broadcast on Free Speech TV. Professor Wolff enjoys french cuisine and lives in New York City with his wife, Dr. Harriet Fraad. They have two adult children. Over the last twenty-five years, in collaboration with his colleague, Stephen Resnick, he has developed a new approach to political economy. While it retains and systematically elaborates the Marxist notion of class as surplus labor, it rejects the economic determinism typical of most schools of economics and usually associated with Marxism as well. This new approach appears in several books co-authored by Resnick and Wolff and numerous articles by them separately and together. Common to all of Professor Wolff's work are two central components. The first is the introduction of class, in its elaborated surplus labor definition, as a new "entry point" of social analysis. The second is the concept of overdetermination as the logic of an analytic project that is consistently non-determinist. Want to sneak into Dr. Wolff's economics class?
