Cell Phones and Sleep Performance | It's time to talk about cell phones and other screens! Listen and get answers these two questions: 1) what does it mean for you, specifically how many ways do cell phones reduce your level of sleep performance and 2) what you can you do to level up your sleep performance Let's start with this staggering cell phone statistic: In 2014 Americans checked their phones an average of 33 times per day. By 2022, that number was up to 344! So in just eight years, we went from checking our phones 33 times per day to 344 times per day. It took us less than a decade to 10x how often we get sucked in by our phones. So you probably won't be surprised to hear this statistic: 47% of Americans self-report they're addicted to their cell phones. So what does this mean for you, and what can you do? Listen, learn the 'Do Not Disturb' strategy, and start using it tonight! Give it one week, and if you're still having sleep performance challenges, it's time to take the Sleep Performance Assessment. When you create a “do not disturb” relationship with your phone, you get the sleep performance you need for the daytime performance you want. Use it tonight! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bring the benefits of High Performance Sleep™ to your workplace. Clink the link below. You take this simple step, and we'll take care of the rest! Let's put the mantra of "you can sleep when you're dead" to bed and embrace "sleeping like a baby." It's no surprise we all feel better after a good night's rest. It's time to stop sacrificing our sleep. Tara Clancy, Founder and Chief Strategist at High Performance SleepTM and host of The Counterfeit Sleep® podcast shares the importance of calendaring our sleep and answers the question of why our sleep is making us tired. To reinvent ourselves and take calculated professional risks, being well-rested improves our focus, concentration, and clarity while decreasing our stress and anxiety. Companies benefit from well-rested employees. Employee retention increases as does the bottom line - and market share isn't lost - if employees are performing at their optimal, well-rested levels. In This Episode, Darlene and Tara Clancy discuss: There are many issues around lack of restorative speech which Tara explains. There are other issues besides sleep apnea such as Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome. You may not have clinical sleep apnea but that does not preclude you from having other sleep disorders such as RERA. Tara has had sleep issues which led her on an exploratory journey to better understand sleep syndrome disorders and educate all of us less informed. Key Takeaways: Most people do not realize they do not get enough sleep. Tara has an amazing background around sleep issues Tara describes her own journey around sleep issues. Tara discusses the issue of ”sleep hygiene” or what Tara refers to as ”sleep integrity.” Deep sleep is most imperative. Tara talks about the sleeping issues as ”night-time breathing problems” with sleep apnea being the king on the continuum. Snoring means there is a disruption of airflow to the brain. Tara provides concrete examples to help people comprehend the process involved in the development of sleep disorders. Many specialists now take a more holistic view of the area of sleep disorders. Tara has a quiz on her website, which shows the full range of things that can come up related to nighttime breathing problems. CPAP is just a bandaid. For our 50th episode, the incredible Tara Clancy (NYT, NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, The Moth) joined us to talk about Carolyn’s favorite topic: Divorce! Okay, maybe it’s not her favorite topic, but it was nice to have another divorced dyke to commiserate with. We talk about the external pressures that make you feel bad about ending your marriage, even when it’s the best thing for everyone involved. How do things get to that point? How do you move on? What do you do when children are involved? Are vacations to National Parks the beginning of the end for queer couples? We also take a listener’s question about her “friend” who she swears isn’t her, but we’re not buying it! -Keep the podcast a-lez and gay by donating to our Patreon, where you can get some sapphic swag. -For related content, follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Leave Us a Review if you like what you hear! -Like our theme song? ABOUT THIS EPISODE Peter Aguero is a Moth storyteller and host, as well as creator and performer of the one-man show Daddy Issues. Tara Clancy is also a Moth storyteller and host, as well as author of the memoir The Clancys of Queens, and a panelist on the quiz show Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! on NPR. Both Aguero and Clancy are Moth GrandSLAM champions. In this conversation, they're joined by social psychologist and communications researcher Melanie Green, who studies stories. As a former producer of a live storytelling program, and one who always tried to be helpful, host Michael Sargent wants to help novice storytellers hone their craft, and as a selfish, judgmental ass who wants to have an enjoyable experience in the audience, Sargent also wants to help novices hone their craft so that he'll enjoy listening to their stories. Accordingly, he talked with Aguero, Clancy, and Green about how to tell a good story. There's some useful advice in here. Sunit talks with Tara Clancy of Nurturing Literacy. Tara specializes in helping children develop language and reading skills, and shares her personal story of discovering some barriers to literacy in her own kids. Undiscovered problems that cause all sorts of other issues in young children, including delays in literacy, poor sleep, physical manifestations such as elongated jaw, and delayed potty training at night, among other things, could be the root of seemingly mysterious problems in early childhood. Tara and Sunit both share their personal experiences with their own children, and the signs and symptoms that led them to finding solutions, and Tara shares what else to look for and also the steps you can take to intercept these problems. This is an episode that all young moms need to hear. Your child's behaviour issues or delays in other areas could be the result of an undiagnosed sleep or breathing issue. These often go unnoticed because they manifest at night while you think your child is having a restful sleep. An absolute must listen episode!
This is a conversation with four people who all know stories well, and who were willing to think with me about how stories can work for and against those fighting injustice. Jonathan Adler is a psychologist at the Olin College of Engineering, who has studied the stories people tell while addressing mental or physical health challenges. Skylar Bayer is a marine biologist who is currently working on marine policy in DC as a Dean John A. Knauss Fellow in the U.S. Senate, and is also a storyteller. Tara Clancy is a storyteller and host with The Moth, and has appeared on The Moth Radio Hour, Snap Judgment, and Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!, and she's also the author of a recent memoir (The Clancys of Queens (https://www.amazon.com/Clancys-Queens-Memoir-Tara-Clancy-ebook/dp/B01AQO15XK)). Does your child seem restless after sleeping? Today we have Tara Clancy on the show, she is a literacy expert and she is finding that there is more behind this issue then just the child struggling to be a good reader. After her daughter struggling with different things, she realized that kids could be having a hard time in school because of sleep related breathing problems. She goes over what to look for to see if your child is having breathing issues. A few things she mentions to look for is, spacing of your preschooler and school age child's teeth, if your kids are snoring, do they walk around with an open mouth and if they are a noisy breather because that means their nasal cavity is impacted. These are all symptoms that could be pointing to sleep related breathing problems. So you may be wondering what does this have to do with reading? By not getting rested sleep, your child's brain is being impacted and then it can effect their reading skills. Let's go to the show!
