In this episode of Anabolic Radio, I had the pleasure of chatting to Dr. Eric Helms. This episode was very exercise science and training theory-heavy, so put on your seatbelt. At the heart of science lies this one small fact: one size does not fit all. While general principles apply to all individuals, putting these into practice is more art than science.Innate differences in aerobic capacity, muscle fiber type, insertions/origins, and even proportions/ratios in our skeletal structure- affect how you will respond to a program.Only through trial and error will you be able to determine what works for you.Science is the framework that should guide the development and execution of your training program, but there is no substitute for experience, common sense, and effort- All of which will be common denominators regardless of the program. In this episode, we spoke about a variety of topics ranging from exercise selection, to biomechanics and individual differences in training, to volume requirements, all the way to training to failure.Timestamps:00:00 Intro01:20 Eric's Offseason/Return to the stage03:50 The importance of context04:30 Efficient exercise selection09:00 Squat mechanics/biomechanical differences 10:44 Optimizing set up/execution for movements11:30 Volume requirements15:00 Movement tradeoffs17:00 Principle specificity18:30 Exercise sequence24:24 Effort/Proximity to failure30:00 Nuances of failure38:00 Anatomy/Biomechanics in training44:00 Overreaching & overtraining50:00 Repetition tempoSupport the show (http://www.hawkfitcoaching.com)
Welcome back to the Fearless Training "Roar Knowledge" Podcast Episode 95: Bryce Lewis - For The Love Of Strength - Becoming The Strength Athlete Bryce Lewis is a competitive, drug-free elite powerlifter in the 83-105kg weight classes. He holds records in both the USA Powerlifting federation (USAPL) and International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), and strives to promote the comprehension and love of powerlifting training throughout the world. Through his success as an elite lifter, Bryce's dream is to pass on his knowledge and skills through The Strength Athlete (TSA) powerlifting coaching services online in addition to his YouTube Channel and Facebook fan page. By these efforts, Bryce hopes to help raw, drug-free powerlifting gain more prominence and acceptance internationally. Under 3D Muscle Journey (3DMJ) Coach, Eric Helms, Bryce was introduced to powerlifting, following a collegiate and high school passion for volleyball and a five year period competing in natural bodybuilding. He immediately fell in love with the newfound sport. Lifting heavy was always fun, but powerlifting allowed him to express his desires for competition, application of advanced strength training techniques, and achievements through measured progress. Even now, Bryce remains an integral part of Team 3DMJ and has adapted their principles of dedication, desire, and discipline as his own. In addition to training services, Eric also mentors Bryce through an ongoing 3DMJ internship. Present In addition to his successful career as an athlete, Bryce has always strived for academic and intellectual attainment. He graduated from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2010 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Philosophy. Currently, he plans to continue coaching athletes from around the world through TSA, and help more athletes develop the tools for success. Bryce passionately advocates for the application and love of the sciences, evidence-based philosophies, and skepticism of pseudoscience. In his spare time, he explores a variety of art forms from pencil and pen drawings to graphic design to culinary arts in the kitchen. Bryce resides in Fort Collins, Colorado with his chocolate labrador, Sequoia. After the devastation of COVID-19 and the cancelation of all events, Bryce targets a local level competition and continues to pursue a love of the sport of powerlifting. Welcome back to the Fearless Training "Roar Knowledge" Podcast Episode 87: Alberto Nunez - Mastering The Basics of Building Muscle To Build An Elite Physique He first stepped on a competitive stage in 2007, and then the very next year he earned his pro status in virtually every major natural organization. While Alberto Nunez is relatively new to the sport of competitive bodybuilding he has played a vital role in promoting the natural movement. His contributions as a coach, athlete, and author have helped propel some of the growth the sport has seen over the last decade. Despite all this success, Nuñez claims his most successful accolade comes in the fact that he gets to be called Coach Nuñez. “My biggest thrill is that I was lucky enough to be one of the founders of Team 3DMJ. I can honestly say we as a team have changed this sport we love for the better. Everyday I am thankful that I get to be part of this movement, alongside Coach Helms, Loomis, Alberts and Valdez.” https://3dmusclejourney.com/about/alberto-nunez/ https://muscleandstrengthpyramids.com https://www.instagram.com/nunez3dmj/?hl=en APPLY NOW: https://alexconnor.com.au/apply/ Coaching/Business Inquiries: alex@fearlesstraining.org https://alexconnor.com.au/ Subscribe & Follow along for more: » Subscribe: https://bit.ly/FearlessChannel » Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/227661021434383 » Instagram: https://instagram.com/Fearless_Training_ » ROAR Podcast: https://bit.ly/FTRoar https://fearlesstrainingunited.com

NEW SERIES! I will break down 2-4 topics each week of things I believed when I was 16-20 years old and how dumb I was now that I look back at it. This will go on until I finish every bullet point I have wrote down in my notes so enjoy and let me know how this has helped you! 6:48:00-23:45:00- Body part splits (full body, push pull legs etc were useless) What body part splits are Monday = chest/back Tuesday= legs Wednesday= Shoulders/Triceps/Biceps Thursday= Chest/Back Friday= Legs Saturday= Shoulders/Triceps/Biceps Why this may work for a short period of time and why it may not Why I believe full body part splits are more beneficial More focus on compound movements Hard hitting more focus on pushing heavier weight More volume and frequency/sets hit on each muscle with a full body split Better recovery w/ full body 3 sets, 4 sets x 3 21 4 sets back x 3 12 sets 4 sets shoulders x 3 15 sets 3 sets 1 arm press x 3 5 sets of core x 3 15 sets More flexibility with full body If you miss a body part split workout you need to wait a whole week to hit that muscle. Full body you can do a M,W,F split and not feel stressed to workout 24:00:00- 30:20:00- Training volume (sets per body part/ reps) Due to my thinking of body part splits I would do 12-15 sets or MORE per body part per workout. Which would leave me with about 30-35 plus sets per body per week. And based on progressive overload to gain muscle I would have had to do 45+ etc sets and continue to build more and more sets per body part to see growth and strength increase to the point I would have to be doing 120 sets per muscle per week at this point Realistically and proven by science , TEAM 3DMJ and Brad Schonefeld has shown their followers many studies citing that 6-10 sets per week per muscle group is more than enough to see growth By going to full body I hit 4-6 sets one workout 2-4 the next 2-3 the next puts me at 11 sets per body per week leaving me room for growth, recovery, etc. What is training volume, and why it is so important 30:30:00- 36:41:00- Muscle confusion, needing to change your workouts every workout! This was one I really stood behind during my college days No joke I'd be in the gym 4-5 x a week and thought every work out every week needed to be different than what I did last week or my body would get used to what was doing and not growing so it was always trying to confuse the muscles and it was legitimately spinning on a hamster wheel again and again seeing no strength gains or growth for 3-years DON'T FORGET!!! I've looked up to Eric for a long time and it was an honor to finally be able to sit down and chat. Eric is a scientist, competitive lifter/physique athlete, a part of Team 3DMJ, co-creator of the Muscle and Strength Pyramid ebooks, and about 163 other things. He's impressive, to say the least. But even more so, he's a very chill and humble guy who articulates his thoughts better than most. I got to cover a little bit of his background, but I really wanted to deep dive into why he thinks the way he thinks and how we—the listeners—can apply his thought processes into making our own lives better. I also asked him how the everyday person can know what's true or not when it comes to diet and exercise information since you hear people talking about the Keto diet one day and the Vegan diet the next...who's right? Eric breaks it all down in this episode and I can't wait for you to hear it. Enjoy! How to grow muscle mass? Of course, it depends on quite a few things, but Natural Profession Bodybuilder Jeff Alberts discusses some key things to result in muscle growth in this episode of the School of Muscle. Jeff Alberts is a professional natural bodybuilder and natural bodybuilding coach for Team 3D Muscle Journey. He has decades of experience in natural bodybuilding and shares some key insights in this episode. To grow muscle mass, one of the most important things to consider is how you can keep training consistently, with effort, over the long run. This is an interview with professional bodybuilder and coach Alberto Nunez from Team 3DMJ on how to spot and fix muscle imbalances. I thought Alberto would be the perfect guy to talk to about this because he not only talks the talk, but he walks the walk. He’s an accomplished bodybuilder with an absolutely insane physique, and he and his team have also helped hundreds of other bodybuilders build their best physiques ever and make a career for themselves. I’m also excited to put this interview up because it’s a question I get all the time from both guys and girls, so I’m sure there are quite a few of you out there that could use some help in this regard as well. As you’ll see, the whole topic of muscle imbalances is pretty simple and straightforward when explained correctly. You just have to understand a handful of technical points and guidelines, and you’ll know exactly what you have to do to balance out your physique, left to right, and front to back. Oh and I do have to warn you about one thing: my audio is shit. Unfortunately my good microphone decided to stop playing nice with the program I use to record Skype interviews, and my only backup was my webcam’s terrible mic. Fortunately, I try not to talk much, so you shouldn’t get too annoyed by it. And it won’t happen again, as I have a couple of good backups now. 6:37 - How do you define a weak point? 12:14 - How do you pinpoint a weak point and what do you do about it? 18:19 - How do you progress on isolation movements? 20:29 - What is rep quality? 23:09 - How does training change based on goals? 29:29 - How does an intermediate program look? 35:41 - What are some good isolation exercises for stubborn body parts? 40:25 - What exercises do you use for guys in specialization cycles? 44:04 - What do you use for extra lat development? 45:54 - Do you vary your grip for back exercises? 55:07 - Where can people find your work? Team 3DMJ welcomes their second guest ever, Dr. Mike Zourdos. He joins Eric Helms and Andrea Valdez to discuss the recent past and distant future of strength training research. Dr. Mike is an assistant professor at Florida Atlantic University, where he leads the Muscle Physiology Lab in Boca Raton. This discussion starts by covering quite a bit of ground in regards to academic and career paths within strength and conditioning realm. The trio then dives into some of Dr. Mike's previous research findings in regards to programming and periodization, followed by a glimpse into the future studies and methods that his lab aims to test over the next few years. You'll find out how Dr. Mike coaches his athletes, some of his personal insight in regards to his own training, and why Eric has been living in Florida for the past few weeks collecting data in the FAU labs for his own PhD thesis. While this episode might sound a bit nerdier than some of the team's other shows, the coaches still dive into the practical applications of all this research. They don't just talk about studies, but also about what that data means and how it can be useful for anyone interested in building strength training programs for themselves or the athletes they coach. Join the conversation by leaving comments, reviews, and insights throughout any and all social media outlets using the handle @team3dmj. Alberto Nunez first stepped on a competitive stage in 2007, and then the very next year he earned his pro status in virtually every major natural organization. While Alberto Nunez is relatively new to the sport of competitive bodybuilding, he has played a vital role in promoting the natural movement. His contributions as a coach, athlete, and an author have helped propel some of the growth the sport has seen over the last decade. Despite all this success Nunez claims his most successful accolade comes in the fact that he gets to be called Coach Nunez. “My biggest thrill is that I was lucky enough to be one of the founders of Team 3DMJ. I can honestly say we as a team have changed this sport we love for the better. Everyday I am thankful that I get to be part of this movement, alongside Coach Helms, Loomis, Alberts and Valdez.” http://www.3dmusclejourney.com In this podcast, Alberto and I discussed the following topics: 1.For people that might not know what are we talking about when we say peak week, could you briefly explain? 2. What are your general recommendations when it comes to training, cardio, nutrition (carbohydrate, water, sodium) during peak week?
