This week I am joined by Dr Matthew Barnes. Matt is a husband and father of two teenagers. He is an Associate Professor at Massey University in Palmerston North and was one of my PhD supervisors.I have Matt to thank for getting me into Powerlifting. When I was studying at Massey he noticed I was relatively strong and encouraged me to give it a try. To be fair his enthusiasm for research and our many yarns about strength training during my studies probably also helped move me into that field too!In this episode we discuss Matt's childhood, growing up in a small town in the deep South of New Zealand. We talk about his days working in pubs, playing rugby, and how influential people impacted the direction he took in both his training and life. We also hear how getting hit by a rogue golf ball put an end to his rugby-playing days. The episode finishes with us chatting about some of his philosophies around parenting and how he encourages his kids to be active but doesn't force them into specific sports. It was great to get to chat with Matt and learn his story! We'll definitely be getting Matt back on to discuss some more of his academic research, I'm keen to dig into some of his insights into recovery from exercise. Expect to hear him on the podcast again in the future.Enjoy the episode. _____________________You can find more from Hayden at the following:Instagram - @hjp_strongerdadsCoaching - www.hjpmethod.co.nz/coaching/Research - https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Hayden-PritchardWebsite - www.hjpmethod.co.nz_____________________How can you support my work? You can 'Buy Me a Coffee' by clicking herePurchase a MASS Research Review subscription using this affiliate linkPurchase Eric Helms' Muscle & Strength Pyramid books using this affiliate link

Discussing his journey in strength sports and how he got into Strongman, we came to terms with the fact that we would both be far less competitive if we competed against the Powerlifting talent pool these days, as well as jumping into some of the key learnings from parenthood so far, and how sport can be a positive influence for children and parents alike.Enjoy the episode!_____________________You can find more from Hayden at the following:Instagram - @hjp_strongerdadsCoaching - www.hjpmethod.co.nz/coaching/Research - https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Hayden-PritchardWebsite - www.hjpmethod.co.nz_____________________How can you support my work? You can 'Buy Me a Coffee' by clicking herePurchase a MASS Research Review subscription using this affiliate linkPurchase Eric Helms' Muscle & Strength Pyramid books using this affiliate link

Sign up to my newsletter at www.strongerdads.co.nz This week I am joined by Dr Pak Androulakis-Korakakis. He is a researcher and strength coach. Our first 'non-dad' guest! Pak and I have connected previously through the academic world, because of our mutual interest in strength training research. His PhD was focused on the minimum effective dose for strength training, a topic of particular interest to Dads and other time-poor individuals who want to make progress in their training but may not be able to train "optimally". Our conversation spanned from Pak's childhood years of growing up in several countries, how he got interested in his specific research area, and how he applies the concepts he has learned with his own clients. Plenty of practical takeaways in this one. Traditionally strength athletes don't like to do cardio. However, given the benefits of aerobic activity, it's something I'd recommend incorporating into almost any training routine. For Dads, I think the two key benefits are its potential to increase your longevity (i.e. health benefits) and also the fact that it can help you be a more involved and active Dad that can keep up with your kid(s).So... How much aerobic activity should you do? How hard should it be? Where could you place it within the context of a strength athletes program? Tune in to find out!Oh, and the thumbnail image for this episode... haha.Disclaimer: Be sure to consult with your medical professional before beginning any new exercise routine.Enjoy the episode!_____________________You can find more from Hayden at the following:Instagram - @hjp_strongerdadsCoaching - www.hjpmethod.co.nz/coaching/Research - https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Hayden-PritchardWebsite - www.hjpmethod.co.nz_____________________How can you support my work? You can 'Buy Me a Coffee' by clicking herePurchase a MASS Research Review subscription using this affiliate linkPurchase Eric Helms' Muscle & Strength Pyramid books using this affiliate link
Sign up to my newsletter at www.strongerdads.co.nz This week I am joined by Mike Tuchscherer. He is a husband and father of four. He is the founder of Reactive Training Systems, a World Games Powerlifting Champion, and has set multiple IPF World Records. Mike is well known in the Powerlifting scene and was one of the early influences on my training and coaching practices after following him online and reading his book, the RTS Manual. Following this early influence, I was then coached by Mike in the lead-up to the 2013 IPF World Champs in Russia and later I also coached as part of the RTS team in 2021-2022. We chatted about his time in the United States Air Force Academy and working as a missileer, how he met his wife, and we spent plenty of time discussing how he has been able to continue to prioritise his training and being a business owner as a Dad. I really enjoyed chatting with Mike about things not so focused on training concepts, it was great to learn more about these other aspects of his life. This week I am joined by Zach Powell. He's a husband and a father of two. He coaches parents who want to get stronger and compete in endurance events.I have followed Zach on Instagram for a while now and I enjoy the content he puts out and his approach to training. He has a background in Olympic Weightlifting, having competed for almost a decade before having his first child. Shortly thereafter he became interested in running and began combining strength and endurance pursuits. In this episode, we discuss his background and his approach to training before and after having children. We spend a bit of time discussing the challenges of switching from an athletic pursuit that had been a part of your identity. Finally, we chat about how his lessons from training as a new dad have helped him in his coaching of other parents, and the things he has learned through these coaching relationships.

The Muscle and Strength Training Pyramid Navigating the available fitness information online can be confusing and time-consuming at best, and a minefield of misinformation at worst. One inherent problem is that information online is always presented as supremely important and as the next ‘big thing,' without context or any understanding of priorities. Enter The Muscle and Strength Pyramid books. The foundational concept of these books is understanding priorities and context, so you can take all the pieces of the puzzle and fit them together into an actionable plan. The chief author of the books, Dr. Eric Helms, has not only the academic understanding of training and nutrition as an active researcher but also extensive practical experience. He has been a personal trainer, powerlifting and bodybuilding coach since 2005, helping hundreds bridge the gap between science and practice to reach their goals. In addition, he has the minds of Andrea Valdez, and Andy Morgan to ensure the concepts are communicated clearly and effectively and no stone is left unturned. Andrea is a lifelong athlete with extensive coaching experience and her Masters in Exercise Physiology, and Andy is a successful writer and consultant for body composition change with a unique grasp of how to communicate topics to diverse groups, as he produces content for both the Japanese and English speaking fitness communities. Together, they bring you The Muscle and Strength Training Pyramid, the hierarchical, comprehensive, evidence-based guide that is a must-have for every serious lifter or trainer. https://muscleandstrengthpyramids.com/ If you'd like to support the podcast you can by following the link below to buy us a cup of coffee ☕ it's good karma

I've looked up to Eric for a long time and it was an honor to finally be able to sit down and chat. Eric is a scientist, competitive lifter/physique athlete, a part of Team 3DMJ, co-creator of the Muscle and Strength Pyramid ebooks, and about 163 other things. He's impressive, to say the least. But even more so, he's a very chill and humble guy who articulates his thoughts better than most. I got to cover a little bit of his background, but I really wanted to deep dive into why he thinks the way he thinks and how we—the listeners—can apply his thought processes into making our own lives better. I also asked him how the everyday person can know what's true or not when it comes to diet and exercise information since you hear people talking about the Keto diet one day and the Vegan diet the next...who's right? Eric breaks it all down in this episode and I can't wait for you to hear it. Enjoy! "For those who would say that sugar is addictive, if that was truly at the root of the addictive nature that people have with some foods, you wouldn't see them seeking out cookies, you'd see them seeking out sugar packets. You'd want that raw cut at its most basic form. Heroin addicts don't want things cut with their heroin. So I think we need to think about it in a broader perspective." Eric Helms is one of the most insightful, unbiased, and respected figures in the nutrition and exercise industry. For most of Eric’s career, he has worked as a coach for drug free strength and physique competitors at all levels. But he’s not just a coach. Eric is a competitive athlete himself, and has pro status with the Professional Natural Bodybuilding Association and competes with the IPF at the international level as an unequipped powerlifter. As if that wasn’t enough Eric has also published multiple peer reviewed articles on in exercise science and nutrition journals. He’s taught undergraduate and graduate level nutrition and exercise science and speaks internationally at academic and commercial conferences for fitness, nutrition, and strength and conditioning. He has a Bachelor of science in fitness and wellness, one masters in exercise science, a second masters in sports nutrition, and PhD in strength and conditioning. Eric is perhaps most well-known for being one of the 3D Muscle Journey coaches and his amazing Nutrition and Strength Pyramid books. If you’re even slightly interested in your health or physique, this episode cannot be missed. Eric and I discuss intermittent fasting, how to spot bullshit advice, the problem with formulaic diets, whether sugar is toxic, how you can educate yourself properly, the benefits of lifting weights, and a ton more.

Andrea is a member of the 3D Muscle Journey bodybuilding and powerlifting coaching team. She is a bodybuilder, Grid competitor, and is my co-author on the Muscle and Strength Pyramid books. Today's conversation covers three main topics: 1. Coaching philosophy and building the coach-client relationship. 2. The importance of getting "un-lean" after competing when moving into a muscle gain phase. 3. How training for another sport has made her a better bodybuilder and may be something worth consideration. At the end of the podcast, we went a little off topic with Andrea schooling me on how to use Instagram and Snapchat. I hope you enjoy this conversation with the absolute bundle of energy that is...
