The book of Daniel explores what it means to be God's people while living in a culture that is set against his values. How do God's people remain faithful and confident in a situation like this? The strange dream in Daniel chapter 7 gives us some insight. In it we see there's a kingdom ruled by the “Son of Man,” the one with all “authority, glory and sovereign power.” The oppressive rulers of this world will fail, but the Son of Man's rule will never end. So when arrogant kings rise up, the people of God can look to a more powerful King. His name is Jesus, and all his followers are invited to live in the humble values of his Kingdom now, even while living amidst the kingdoms of Earth. Let's reflect more on thisBible Reading Daniel 7:9-14Reflection Questions1. How can the arrogant beasts in Daniel's vision help you notice oppression in the culture around you?2. How do you imagine the Kingdom of Jesus bringing hope to the oppression in your culture?3. How can the Son of Man in Daniel's vision inspire you to stand up to the oppression around you? Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, most media coverage has focused on the ongoing physical health disaster and the need to convince readers and elected officials to take action. But the coverage is also a chronic source of trauma. Now that there is some good news interspersed with the tragedy, we struggle to find a balance. Dr. Alison Holman is a health psychologist and professor at the University of California Irvine's Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, whose work focuses on exposure to traumatic events such as Ebola outbreaks, the Boston Marathon bombing, and, most recently, Covid-19. On this week's Kicker, Holman joins Kyle Pope, editor and publisher of CJR, to discuss journalism's impact on readers' mental health, and why traumatic coverage can fail to motivate change.

01/31/2021: There's hope in God's Word: Dennis Tucker
We are in a pandemic, yet hope remains. We are in uncertain political climates, yet hope remains. Don't be discouraged!
Rise up, there's hope in Christ. There's power in God's word in your mouth. His word will always produce result when you speak it by faith. Understand this, the lifting power of God is in your mouth. So, don't be quiet. Speak the word. Give the word. God’s word in your mouth is God talking and there's nothing on earth that has enough power to stop God's word from accomplishing whatever it is released for. Hallelujah. Your life goes in the direction of your mouth. Our opening scripture says when men are cast down, you should SAY there is lifting up. Don't join them to talk fear, don't join them to talk lack, don't join them to confess that the world is no longer safe and that things are hard. Don't be identified with such. Be humble and accept God's testimony. Speak God's word irrespective of your feelings or the news around you. Hallelujah.

On the feast of St. Augustine, the great doctor of the Catholic Church, Fr. Patrick explains how there is always hope
I've been told most of my life that I am incredibly upbeat, encouraging, positive, happy, and full of life. When they talk to me more in-depth and I tell them that it's a true battle at times to be that way because some days I don't even want to live, they're in shock and disbelief. The truth is the more someone deeply loves, the more they deeply hurt, and that person often doesn't know how to handle those deep emotions and so they either cave in and shut out or they explode and lash out when what he/she is experiencing gets overwhelming. If I had to label my calling in life, it'd be a hope dealer. Undoubtedly, I believe that those who've been through more crap are the most effective at convincing others that their crap doesn't have to kill them. On my highest or lowest day, I'm persuaded that God loves me and thinks fondly of me... even when I argue with and try to talk Him out of it. The depression and anxiety I battle doesn't scare Him away or intimidate Him. It's up to me to renew my mind to the worth He sees in my life. Gamechanger. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
