At 24, former model and award-winning advertising gal Lisa Cox had a brain haemorrhage and died. Thankfully, she was brought back to life, but the stroke left its impact and turned her life upside down in an instant. Lisa had to navigate her ‘new normal’; a wheelchair, amputations, chronic pain, heart surgery and more…including learning to write again. And write she does! Now 40, author and marketing pro Lisa is all about changing the way physical disability is represented in mainstream pop culture. She discusses everything from how frustratingly often her husband is mistaken for her carer, to being ‘the token disabled friend’, fashion inclusivity, things not to say to a person with physical limitations…and just how much she LOVES her life. So, what happens when life as you knew it changes in an instant? We find out in FORTY. Caleb, Mario, and Ulysse crown the best Judd Apatow Movie. Do we prefer Forgetting Sarah Marshall or Knocked Up? The 40-Year-Old Virgin or This is 40? Or do we just get side tracked on random tangents?
This week on a bonus episode of The Collider.com Podcast, we’re talking about The King of Staten Island and the narrative features of director Judd Apatow. We talk about the style of Apatow’s movies, criticisms of his work, his strengths and weaknesses as a filmmaker, how he’s grown as a director, branching out to tell more autobiographical stories of young comedians, and more.
The hosts round off their romantic comedy trilogy with Judd Apatow’s This Is 40, starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann as married couple Pete and Debbie, who are both turning 40. The hosts pair the film with a Stella Artois beer, a perfectly simple drink and a wonderfully simplistic approach to life at 40. What, did you think that we were going to slow down just because the weekly installments of PDC Live!! are coming to an end? Not. A. Chance. We have not one but FOUR huge movies this week to talk about. Quinton Tarantino's new epic Django Unchained, then we'll talk about Oscar darling Les Miserables. Usually that would be more than enough to fill a few hours but we're also going to somehow manage to fit in Judd Apatow's latest This is 40 and the Billy Crystal/Bette Midler vehicle Parental Guidance. Join us for our last regular episode before we change over to our specials only format!
