On Episode 28 of the Get Overit Podcast, we sit down with Matt Hawkins, president and COO of Top Cow Productions, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary as one of the biggest players in the comic book industry this year. “Top Cow was founded in 1992 by Mark Silvestri, one of six artists who all left Marvel comics together to form a company called Image Comics. It was Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Mark Silvestri, Jim Lee, Eric Larson, and Jim Valentino,” Matt says. “They all left together and created a new company, basically to fight for creator rights. They wanted to own their own content and they wanted to own and control the characters and their creations.” Matt has been at Top Cow for almost 25 years, and in the industry for a total of 29 years, though that wasn't necessarily the path he saw himself on at the start. He wasn't a fan of comic books growing up, and he credits his ability to write with playing Dungeons & Dragons. His academic path led toward a master's degree in Physics from UCLA. His work in the comic book industry—he has written over 600 books—is steeped richly in research, which he revels in. “I do a deep dive. And in many cases, the research I do on projects takes years. I did a book called The Clock, a few years ago, which was about the weaponization of cancer. And I spent four or five years researching it, interviewed several immuno-therapists and actually brought a couple people on board that would edit me and make sure it was authentic. And in the back of books like that, which I do heavy research, I include what I call a science class, which explains the research and where they can go to see that this is actually legitimate. The idea of the weaponization of cancer might seem absurd, but it's very plausible, probable, and it could have already happened. And I explain all that and show how it works.”Matt has had to imagine many different types of lives and scenarios for audiences of mixed interests and behaviors over his career. “The most successful book I'm writing right now is about an ethically non-monogamous couple. A romance book written for women. That book is published in 27 languages, 57 countries around the world. It's my most successful book, read primarily by middle-aged women.”Why does Matt encourage other dreamers to look for opportunities to veer off course? “Nothing ventured, nothing gained,” he says. “Most people don't take advantage of opportunities that present themselves. I honestly got lucky. I got a lucky opportunity…And then I fought hard and honed my skills. And I've been doing this for 30 years. And you're right. I don't see me doing anything else. And I really love what I do. For me, my work is a joy.”
The Darkness is a first-person shooter video game developed by Starbreeze Studios and published by 2K Games for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game was released in 2007 in North America and Europe and it is based on The Darkness comic book series published by Top Cow Productions. A sequel titled The Darkness II was released in 2012.[1] The player takes on the role of Jackie Estacado (Kirk Acevedo), with the story presented through narration by himself. On the evening of his 21st birthday, Jackie is targeted for assassination by his "Uncle" Paulie Franchetti (Dwight Schultz) out of sheer paranoia that Jackie is after his position as the Don. As night falls, the Darkness (Mike Patton) - an ancient demonic force which has inhabited Jackie's bloodline for generations - violently manifests and massacres his pursuers. With his new powers, Jackie gradually dismantles Paulie's drug and money laundering operations. Condemned: Criminal Origins[a] is a first-person survival horror video game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Sega. It was released worldwide in 2005 on the Xbox 360, with a Microsoft Windows version released in 2006. With the developer citing films such as The Silence of the Lambs, Seven, and Saw as inspiration, the game places an emphasis on melee combat and puzzle solving, including searching for fingerprints and gathering evidence. Upon release, Condemned was met with moderate-to-good reviews by players and critics. Many reviewers cited its storyline and lack of progression as the game's biggest faults, while its solid controls and fresh approach to horror were praised. A sequel, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, was released in 2008 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. There was also an internet prequel and a planned film adaptation to expand the Condemned franchise. ********************************************************************** Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. Henry Barajas is a Latinx author from Tucson. He spoke about his pathway as a storyteller. He is best known for his graphic memoir about his great-grandfather titled La Voz De M.A.Y.O. Tata Rambo. It is based on the oral history of Ramon Jaurigue, an orphan and WWII veteran who co-founded the Mexican, American, Yaqui, and Others (M.A.Y.O.) organization, which successfully lobbied the Tucson City Council to improve living and working conditions for members of the Pascua Yaqui tribe—paving the way to their federal recognition. Meanwhile, Ramon’s home life suffered as his focus was pulled from his family to the wider community, and from domesticity to the adrenaline of the campaign. Henry Barajas has been writing, lettering, editing, and publishing comics for ten years. Recently, he scripted and lettered a short story for Image Comics’ Where We Live Benefit Anthology—100% of the proceeds were donated to Route 91 Strong, a non-profit organization. He was a deejay for KXCI, the online editor of the Tucson Weekly, former Arizona Daily Star writer/news assistant, and was nominated for the Shel Dorf Blogger of the Year award for his work at The Beat. Currently, he’s the Operations Director for Top Cow Productions in Los Angeles, CA. He is about to launch the first part of a 4 part Latinx fantasy series called Helm Greycastle on April 28th. Barajas took combined his passion for fantasy novels and books and created an alternate universe where the Aztec Empire defeated the Spanish Conquistadors. Recorded and produced by Amanda Shauger.

September Mourning is a heavy metal band, which incorporates a transmedia dark culture project created by Emily Lazar and Marc Silvestri. The band was formed by frontwoman, vocalist, and screamer, Emily Lazar in New York in 2009. The concept narrative created by Lazar and incorporated in the band and their performances, centers around the fictional story of a human-grim reaper hybrid named September, as she navigates the worlds of the living and the dead. The character's human-side possesses the empathy to give some human souls a second chance. The story is presented on different media platforms, including music, comic books, and live concerts. The comic books are published by Top Cow Productions Image Comics. The storyline of September Mourning was first created by Lazar. Marc Silvestri of Top Cow Productions became involved after Lazar pitched the idea to him via Myspace. Together, they developed the world and storyline of September Mourning. Lazar described the project: "It's a storyline that has a musical component to it. An artistic component to it. The storyline is what holds it all together. The music is like the icing on the cake. It's very important of course, but it's the vehicle to tell the story." I got the chance to speak with Barajas and Gonzo about this groundbreaking work, published by Top Cow Productions, an imprint of Image Comics. We spoke about the importance of telling our histories as people of color who have been erased and more importantly the pressure of bringing those stories to life. Barajas details his choice to improve the negative moments in Tata Rambo's life as well as the heroic activist ones. Gonzo dives into the influences on his art and recreating the time period in clothing and furnishings. But most importantly, they explain the importance the project means to them. So click play on the audio above and take a listen.
