Join Richard in this weeks veg grower podcast and this week Richard is sharing his tips for seed starting success, from the allotment we have a question from a listener about saving potato seed and finally we have a new project of making our own compost in order to be more self sufficent. Kitchen garden update: Seed Starting Success. With March and Spring being just around the corner, it brings with the real seed sowing time. Seed sowing is a skill in its own right but this week Richard suggests ways in which to make seed sowing more successful for you. This tips include: Use the freshest seed possible and buy from a reputable source such as Premier seeds direct or Simply Seed. Use a good quality seed compost and add a bit of perlite Heated propagators help warm the soil, but a soil thermometer also helps you work out when the soil is warm enough When you seedlings germinate they need light and grow lights can really help with strong growth. Allotment update: Saving our own Seed Potatoes Down on the allotment this week Richard is answering a question from a listener by the name of Steve. Steve is asking if its possible to save our own seed potatoes. Saving our own seed potatoes can help save money and also could mean we could have our own supply of varieties that may not be available in the garden centres. Richard reflects on a time when he did save his own seed potatoes and how that worked out and shares how he managed to save his own seed potatoes. Something he feels we should all do more of as we try and be more self sufficient. Chef Scott's Recipe Of The Week. Chef Scott is back with another delicious recipe and a interesting twist on the good old broccoli stem. Tempura broccoli is one to delight many when it arrives on the kitchen table adding a oriental zing to a delicious vegetable. And Finally making our own compost mixes. Towards the end of this weeks podcast Richard shares a new project he is attempting. Making his own ingredients to mix his own compost mixes. Over the years Richard has noted that compost is one of the most expensive costs in growing his own food. After doing lots of research Richard has identified ways of making it possible to make his own compost. But this starts with making his own ingredients.

Tempura has been with us for about three centuries. but it's origins came when 2 cultures combined...it was the Portuguese missionaries living in Nagasaki in 1549 introduced it, tempura has become entrenched in Japanese culture. The original tempura dish was served during Lent, an annual Christian event where many Christian denominations are forbidden to eat meat. the name ‘tempura' stems from the Latin phrase ‘ad tempora cuaresme,' meaning “in the time of Lent.” it was mistaken for the dish's name, and tempura came to stay. Modern chefs have unique ideas on tempura, and they don't only use fish or vegetables. Almost anything goes into tempura these days.

[✐1. Adagio] Telling what you want to do.“I want to do this and that!”[00:06]Hello, everyone. Let's start.Repeat after me[00:11]1. study [masu form] > want to study→ I want to study Japanese more.2. Play a game→ I want to play a new game.3. eat→ I want to eat Tempura.4. see/watch/look→ I want to see a musical.5. go to bed→ I want to go to bed soon/early.6. go→ I want to go to Kamakura.7. listen/hear→ I want to hear your story.8. buy→ I want to buy a pair of headphones.9. drink→ I want to drink Chu-hai*.(chu-hai= light alcohol drinks mixed with carbonated water etc. For details check out this link : https://www.tsunagujapan.com/10-japanese-chu-hai-you-can-buy-at-convenience-stores/ )[02:28]Now, answer as follows. For example;Do you want to drink Japanese tea? No.→ No I don't want to drink.[02:39]Ready?[02:41 ]1. Do you want to practice Kanji? No.No, I don't want to practice.2. Do you want to play baseball? No.No, I don't want to play.3. Do you want to see a horror movie? No.No, I don't want to see.[03:30]To be honest, those answers sound a bit harsh for Japanese people. When we want to politely say no, we probably say「Iie, chotto…」or「iie, Iidesu.[03:45]For example,Do you want to play football/soccer?IIe, chotto…(well, I don't' know…).[03:52]Next is “I want to do nothing”.Repeat after me[03:57 ]1. No, nothing→ No, I don't want to watch anything.[04:55]By the way, when you want to suggest some kind of action, you'd better use 「〜masenka」, instead of 「〜tai」。[05:05]For example,Do you want to come to my place? :-(Why don't you come to my place? Repeat after me[00:11]1. (チューハイ= light alcohol drinks mixed with carbonated water etc. For details check out this link : https://www.tsunagujapan.com/10-japanese-chu-hai-you-can-buy-at-convenience-stores/ )[02:28]では、つぎのように、こたえましょう。 Support the show=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=Need more translation & transcript? Reinhören lohnt sich also.

Welcome to January 7th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate delicious imports and wobbly heads. In the mid 16th century Nagasaki, Japan was a closed-port to most of the world, but the Portuguese were allowed to bring in Catholicism and with it, a food that they made during lent. The name tempura actually comes from the Latin quattuor anni tempora or Days of Ember when no red meat was eaten. The origins of these fritters likely came from Indian pakora, but the Japanese love for fresh foods put a lighter spin on the dish. As strange as it sounds, Japan had no tradition of frying food before this time. Today, tempura is a fundamental culinary technique that we celebrate on National Tempura Day. Bobbleheads have been around since the 18th Century. They were brought to Europe from China, where they were known as temple nodders or nodding head figures. But the bobbleheads we treasure today, first became popular in the 1960s. That's when sports teams began depicting their mascots and famous players like Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays. The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame Museum houses the world's largest collection and if you happen to be in Milwaukee you can drop in to see the exhibits. You could even celebrate with a custom made figure of yourself as long as you don't let it go to your head on National Bobblehead Day. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Sassed1 2Many works in the IT Field as a mainframe technician. He's an avid shooter, rides motorcycles, and flies radio-controlled airplanes. And all of that was almost ripped away when early on life's journey he was spun and strewn with obstacles that forced him to literally rethink everything. In this episode, Sassed discusses his career and the constant companion of the post effects of traumatic brain injury. Additionally, as a father, Sassed explains the disconnect between television narratives and proclamations by so-called experts and his search for authentic information. TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY (TBI). Per Mayo Clinic, “Traumatic brain injury usually results from a violent blow or jolt to the head or body. An object that goes through brain tissue, such as a bullet or shattered piece of skull, also can cause traumatic brain injury. Mild traumatic brain injury may affect your brain cells temporarily. More-serious traumatic brain injury can result in bruising, torn tissues, bleeding and other physical damage to the brain. These injuries can result in long-term complications or death.” At the age of 21, Sassed was involved in a violent motorcycle accident, launching him over a stationary vehicle, and inflicting a serious traumatic brain injury into the aspiring tradesman's life. His face was smashed into the pavement and his mouth, numerous bones were shattered or dislocated, muscles torn, and nerves damaged. His mouth was wired shut and he was near metal snips as vomiting with a wired-shut mouth put him at risk for suffocating. Dizziness was nearly a constant experience and for years it was precarious to simply stand up from a chair without losing his balance. VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION. Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapy are common for persons recuperating from TBI. Sassed didn't receive these therapies, but did partake in extensive hands-on training to rebuild motor memory and coordination. During recovery, he worked at a famous Japanese restaurant as a dishwasher - and later trained as a Tempura chef. Two years after the accident, Sassed enrolled in a state-sponsored vocational rehabilitation program which guided him into a career in computer operations. His first computer-related job, in 1984, centered on decollating six part computer printouts for $4.50 an hour. WHAT'S IN A NAME: SASSED1 2MANY. Sassed = past tense: to be cheeky or rude to (someone). 1 = one: the lowest cardinal number. 2 = to͞o: to a higher degree than is desirable, permissible, or possible many = innumerable, countless. Sassed1 2Many is a state of mind actualized from constant exposure to innumerable amounts of un-thoughtful impetuous impertinent and disrespectful content in the public and social digital communications age, resulting in a singularly sarcastic existence. BEHIND THE MEDIA CURTAIN. It was as a father of young children that Sassed found himself recoiling from the nightly news and the abrasive social-shaping of commercials. He disconnected from contemporary media and immersed in personal research and engaging in thought-provoking discourse and debates. Doc and Sassed lamented on how even BIG news events receive perhaps ninety seconds of coverage on TV and are posted, with superficial information, on websites. The era of investigative journalism seemingly went extinct in the 1980s. Today, prominent media mouthpieces are well-compensated to read teleprompters and to not ask questions. Eventually, even they arrive at a crossroads of dissonance with what they speak and what they observe - and are quickly replaced by the long line of talking heads that want their shot at being a news celebrity. CANNONBALL RUN. In 1989, Sassed roared across the eastern seaboard in his 1988 Isuzu Impulse while averaging over 140MPH. In what many call the real-life remake of the famous 1981 movie starring Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise, Sassed acquired a six pack, carton of donuts, and a first class postage stamp (25 cents at the time). Fritters are popular all over the world, though they're not called fritters everywhere you go. In Asia, several varieties, including the Burmese a-kyaw, which is popularly made with a rich gourd filling, are typically served with tea or for breakfast. Tempura is also considered a fritter, with one of the most popular being Pisang Goreng, a banana-based Fritter. In Indonesia, the perfect accompaniment to fritter is bird's eye chili. You may have your favorite fritter, but have you ever wondered about its history? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
