Remastered from our interview in May 2023 A few months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing the Nobel Laureate, Barry Barish, for UCTV. Barry is an experimental physicist and a professor at UC Riverside. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics along with Rainer Weiss and Kip Thorne for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves. In our interview, Barry reflects on his life in science, being curious, experiencing imposter syndrome, and working in the field of physics. Tune in! Key Takeaways: Intro (00:00) How to get over impostor syndrome (00:40) Exploring curiosity (06:34) The art of science (11:08) The probability of a quantum theory of gravity (21:36) Would Barry visit a black hole? (26:12) Barry's origin story (30:53) Could we make an AI physicist? (42:19) Outro (46:12) — Additional resources:
In the almost 40-minute episode 2 of the "Brewing Within" series (funded by NABJ Black Press Grant) ONME News publisher, Julia Dudley Najieb, narrates and navigates through the student vaccine mandate that was happening/did happen/or is still happening? Of course this issue continues to be a debate to this date, but Dudley Najieb navigates through the legalize and political stances.Thereafter, Dudley Najieb features key expert, Dr. Naomi Bardach, who was part of a team that was behind the scene of the impact of COVID-19 on California schools, and how to reopen as soon as possible. Dr. Bardach also talks about her personal experience with her son who suffered depression and anxiety during the shutdown in California. These video excerpts come from UCTV 70-min. program, “Is There an Off-Ramp for That? K-12 Schools and COVID-19”, where Dr. Bardach discussed the impact the pandemic had on children, educators and families and the measures schools employed to keep students and teachers safe while continuing to educate children. She explained what the research found and best practices for moving forward. In the next chapter, Dudley Najieb explores the pre-post stats of students of color suffering depression, anxiety and other traumatic mental health issues: The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention surveyed more than 7,000 high school students before the pandemic and found that 55.1% suffered emotional abuse, 44.2% reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, 9% attempted suicide. Medical experts from an Ethnic Media Services briefing reveal and explain the data and real-life experience concerning the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health of children, parents and the like. Each of them expand on the data concerning ethnic students, and the daily discrimination these students were going through prior to the pandemic.
There is a house in La Jolla that is almost entirely food. It overlooks Black's Beach. It is a very, very nice house. Walk its grounds, and you come across blueberries and strawberries and cabbage and habañeros and herbs and goats and bees and chickens and greenhouses. What was once a tennis court on the grounds has been filled in with more food growing. It is a house-farm, an Eden on the sea cliff, and it's become an epicenter of San Diego's food scene. It's owned by Michelle Lerach and her husband, Bill. Michelle took a sabbatical during law school to live and work on a goat farm in Northern California. There, she saw how connected farmers and ranchers and makers were to restaurants, grocers, distributors, lawmakers (who endorse public spending on agriculture), media, etc. She wanted to bring that to San Diego. She wanted to bring them all to the same plot of land (or house, in this case) to start fostering good, local foodways. So she opened her home—affectionately called the Castle of Chaos—to all of them. Any given day, you'll see local chefs and winemakers and farmers strolling around her home, inspecting things, cooking things, or just kicking up their feet. During the shutdown part of the pandemic, she turned her front driveway into a market to help farmers move product. Food from her home is featured at some of the city's top restaurants. She started the Berry Good Night, which was an annual dinner where she'd invite thought leaders on food and environmental stewardship. It also invited some of her very high-profile and influential friends who could, upon meeting farmers and food people, either financially support their work or advocate for them in legislation. In 2015, that night evolved into Berry Good Food Foundation, which operates workshops on all sorts of responsible, good-stewardship food initiatives (seafood, soil health, food waste, food justice, etc.) and supports gardens at elementary schools on both sides of the border (they've donated $50K to 23 schools so far). She also gathers some of the biggest brains in the country for discussions on UCTV (which have over 14 million views). Finally, she was one of the executive producers (along with Giselle Bündchen, and others) on the film, Kiss the Ground, a documentary about regenerative farming. It was produced by Ryalnd Englehart (whose family owns Cafe Gratitude and Gracias Madre), narrated by Woody Harrelson, and included cameos from Ian Somerhalder, Tom Brady, and a couple songs from fellow San Diegan and farmer/food activist, Jason Mraz. That's a lot, I know. Basically, she's used her law degree and connections to move the city's food scene forward in fairly massive ways. “At the end of the day, we just want to story connect and foster an inclusive, equitable, regenerative good system in San Diego,” she says. She's our guest on this week's podcast. Specifically, she's trying to raise awareness for regenerative farming and Kiss the Ground (the organization that's also co-founded by Englehart). An upcoming dinner on Nov. 19—with chef Flor Franco and David Castro of iconic Valle de Guadalupe restaurant, Fauna—will advocate for regenerative farming being a bigger part of the U.S. Farm Bill. We talk about regenerative farming: what it is, how it works, why it's important. A fascinating talk. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” David rediscovers his love for Puesto and raves about their secret weapon—brewer Doug Hasker (try the Clara); Michelle says nothing beats the simple side dish of carrots at Callie; and Troy is genuinely, genuinely impressed by the new food at Cutwater's tasting room, especially the hoagie.

My guest this week is Dr. Sanford Newmark, a clinical professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California and Director of Clinical Services at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Newmark also serves as the Head of the Pediatric Integrative Neurodevelopmental Program at the Osher Center, specializing in the treatment of Autism, ADHD and other developmental or chronic childhood conditions. With a long-standing interest and expertise in nutrition and its impact on childhood development and health, Dr. Newmark combines conventional medicine with nutrition, behavior management, and various complementary modalities. He has lectured widely on both autism and ADHD and has authored 3 chapters in Integrative Medicine textbooks, as well as, writing his own book “ADHD Without Drugs, a Guide to the Natural Care of Children with ADHD”. In addition, his UCTV talk on ADHD has had over 4.6 million views. In this episode, Dr. Newmark and I discuss the importance of a proper ADHD diagnosis, the rising cause of misdiagnosis and non-pharmaceutical alternatives for ADHD medication. Environmental toxins, prenatal exposure, and diet can affect children's brain development. Learn more about Dr. Newmark here. Episode Highlights Pre-Natal Exposure, Toxins, and Diet Links to ADHD In a study of infant cord blood, an average of 200 chemicals known to cause brain issues were present High pesticide levels are associated with higher levels of ADHD A study of 8-year-olds shows that those with higher than average pesticide levels had twice the amount of ADHD than those under the median Hesitations in Prescribing ADHD Medication ADHD Medication does not work well for every child Medication provides short-term effects for about 70% of children For nearly 30% or more of children who take them, it does not work at all Side effects are very common Children do not feel themselves, experience trouble sleeping, personality changes, eating difficulties We do not really understand the long-term effects of this medicine How it may or may not alter the brain over time is unknown Misdiagnosis of ADHD ADHD is very commonly misdiagnosed for a variety of reasons In children who are struggling with specific learning disabilities, in children who experienced trauma, struggle with sleep apnea, or anxiety, etc… The general questionnaire used to diagnose ADHD is very minimal and can easily result in pediatricians giving a misdiagnosis Non-Pharmaceutical Alternatives Addressing nutrition first No food additives such as artificial coloring Avoiding too much sugar and artificial sweeteners Keeping a low intake of processed carbohydrates Gluten and dairy sensitivities are commonly found in children with ADHD Nutritional Supplements A well-sourced omega 3 fish oil supplement Have your child's levels check for iron, zinc and vitamin D to make sure they are getting an adequate amount in order to know what supplements to begin using The Issue With Electronics The common use of electronics and smartphones at a young age have increased damaging effects on children Causing a lack of quality sleep, resulting in a decline in performance at school Children with ADHD can have heightened and severe negative effects to electronics All children and teenagers need monitoring and limits put on these devices for their well-being. Brown v. Board of Education was hailed as a landmark decision for civil rights. But decades later, many consider school integration a failure. UC Berkeley professor Rucker C. Johnson's new book Children of the Dream: Why School Integration Works shows the exact opposite is true. The book looks at decades of studies to show that students of all races who attended integrated schools fared better than those who did not. In this interview with Goldman School of Public Policy Dean Henry E. Brady, which took place on Jan. 9, 2019, Johnson explains how he and his team analyzed the impact of not just integration, but school funding policies and the Head Start program. This lecture was recorded by UCTV, the UC Public Policy Channel. The Goldman School of Public Policy, with the Berkeley Institute for the Future of Young Americans, also produces a podcast, “Talk Policy To Me.”Listen and read a transcript on Berkeley News. This week welcome to the show Robert Lustig. He is a professor of pediatrics in the UCSF Division of Endocrinology, a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies and director of the UCSF Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health (WATCH) Program. Dr. Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist, with basic and clinical training relative to hypothalamic development, anatomy and function. He previously worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, where his work with obese children and adults led him to explore the specific role of fructose as a mediator of both chronic disease and continued caloric consumption. His 90-minute UCTV lecture, titled Sugar: The Bitter Truth, has garnered more 5 million views on YouTube. Questions we ask in this episode: Your YouTube video ‘Sugar: The Bitter Truth’ has almost 7 Million views. Did you expect that kind of response when you released it? What’s the issue with fructose in particular? You were recently quoted in the Australian media as saying; ‘if you feed your kids breakfast cereal, you might as well be giving your kids alcohol’. Please explain... What about fruit, should we be wary of the fructose content? Shop: http://shop.180nutrition.com.au/ Full Transcript & Video Version: This week, we are doing it with the amazing Robert Lustig. Now, if you're not familiar with Robert, in a nutshell he is a professor of pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, if I can say that correctly, where essentially he specializes in childhood obesity. You might have heard the name before, and essentially, Robert released a YouTube video back in, I think it was 2009 or 2010. It went viral and has had nearly 7 million views, which is quite incredible. Even if you type his name up, it's called "Sugar: The Bitter Truth." Better than a video of a double rainbow or whatever going viral, or a cat playing in the kitchen. It was actually something of a very serious message and it was great to get Robert on the show today to basically share with us all his discoveries and what he's finding with sugar, fructose and insulin production, as well. Robert does a fantastic job of simplifying it back down for us, as well, and I promise you, if you do have a lot of sugar in your diet, you're going to think twice about it after today's interview. [00:02:00] Anyway, I have no doubt you're going to enjoy it anyways. It's all good. It's all good news. Great guy and gets the message across perfectly. Very excited to share that with you. As always guys, if you're enjoying our podcast, please subscribe to us, five star us and leave a review on iTunes, only if you're enjoying them of course and only if it's an honest review. That just helps us get this message out there every week and grow us internationally, as well. Anyway, it is all much appreciated. Let's go over to Robert Lustig. Enjoy. Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined by Stuart Cooke, as always. Hi Stu. Stu Hello Guy. Guy Our awesome guest today is Mr. Robert Lustig. Robert, welcome to the show. Robert Thanks for having me, both of you. Guy Very excited mate, very excited. Now Robert, we kick off with one question we ask everyone on this show, and that is if a complete stranger stopped you in the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? Robert Right now, I take care of fat kids. http://180nutrition.com.au/180-tv/robert-lustig-interview/
