This is a very special edition of the Zero Pressure Podcast series as Helen Sharman is joined by 3 fellow astronauts to discuss the future of space stations. Since the 1970s, humans have been using orbiting space stations as places to live and work in microgravity. More than engineering and life support marvels, they are platforms for ground-breaking experimental research, expanding our knowledge of science and our ability to explore further. Helen is joined by Reinhold Ewald, German physicist and astronaut, now President of the Association of Space Explorers, who spent 20 days in space, 18 days on the Mir space station.  Soyeon Yi, biotechnologist, and South Korea's first astronaut, who spent 11 days in space, 9 on the ISS. Soyeon is now a lecturer and businessperson, currently with a particular interest in medical devices.  And Christer Fuglesang, physicist and the first Swedish astronaut, who spent 26 days over 2 missions in space, 17 days on board the ISS, with five EVAs, or spacewalks.

The world we create in our childhood dreams makes us believe that everything is possible. Although most of us outgrow them, sometimes dreams have the power to shape and influence our future. Dumitru Dorin Prunariu, today's guest on the Endurance Cartel is one of those people strong enough to let their dreams guide their path in life. After graduating from the Physics and Mathematics high school in Brașov, Dorin went on to the Politehnica University of Bucharest where he obtained a degree in Aerospace Engineering. In 1978, while working for the Romanian Aeronautic Industry, he was selected for spaceflight training in the Russian Intercosmos Program. After obtaining the highest marks in his three years of training in the program, Dorin became the first Romanian astronaut and the 103rd human being to fly into space. Listen to Dorin's fascinating story about testing the limits of human endurance and surviving for eight days in outer space, aboard the space station Salyute 6.   In today's episode:   (01:15) Dumitru Dorin Prunariu- the 103rd astronaut ever to fly into space and the first Romanian astronaut; (02:30) How it all started- graduating from the Politehnica University of Bucharest, with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, getting selected for the Russian Intercosmos program, and training in the Star City for three years; (06:12) Being trained for a short period of  time as a commander for the spacecraft Soyuz 40; (07:57) Physical challenges while getting ready for the flight- combining theoretical and practical training with physical exercises and training in the centrifuge; (13:05) Launching day, May 14th, 1981 - what was going through his mind while preparing for flight and the story of the onions that ended up in space; (19:08) Seeing Earth from out of space- spotting Romania, the Carpathians, and the place where he was born;  (21:46) Life on the Space Station Salyut 6- sleeping on the ceiling of the space station and experiencing weightlessness; (24:13) Waking up on the space station- what is daily life like in space? (29:14) How were the crew members getting along in the enclosed environment of the space station? Un unreported occurrence… (31:45) Sneaking a Canon camera into the space station despite Russians being against the use of any equipment that was not made in the Soviet Union or by one of the countries they had agreements with; (35:16) Facing difficulties while landing back on Earth; (38:11) Readjusting to gravity; (45:13) There's no political agenda that can interfere between astronauts and detour them from their common goals; (49:12) Elon Musk- a visionary or a dreamer? (51:29) Is there life on other planets in the Universe? (53:59)  Advice for kids wanting to become astronauts; (56:00) Dorin's foundation, books, and future plans.   Quotes:   “They looked for the resistance in our bodies, not our strength. The resistance to face running many kilometers, to have normal breathing, the heart working normally during our training.”   “The spacecraft was put into orbit, full silence, weightlessness inside, and everything started to float around.”   “Your vestibular apparatus doesn't work normally on the ground in the first hours (from landing). Even the first day. After about two hours I could walk by myself, but only going straight. If I wanted to turn to the left or to the right, I just felt that my legs turned, but my body was going straight and I was falling down.”   “Before my first space flight, I was a little bit scared. But I said, ok, I have to do it. I was trained for three years and this was the top of my career.”   “Of course, we think that in the Universe there are intelligent beings. Maybe much more developed than we are, maybe less developed. We don't know yet, and we are still very far to determine where intelligent life could be in the Universe.”   “When you fly into outer space you see the Earth as unity. You see the entire Earth and you understand that it belongs to all humans on Earth. You are not only a citizen of your country, you become a citizen of the planet. You see the beauties of the Earth and you also see the wounds of the Earth.”   “I couldn't dream at that time to fly into outer space because, for Romania at that time, it was too far. For us, outer space belonged to the Soviet Union and to the United States.”     Links selected from this episode:   Intercosmos program- a Soviet space program, designed to help the Soviet Union's allies perform crewed and uncrewed space missions.   Star City-an area in Moscow Oblast, Russia, which, since the 1960s has been home to the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (GCTC).   Soyuz (spacecraft)- a series of spacecraft that has made more than 140 flights into outer space.   Salyut 6- a Soviet orbital space station, the eighth station of the Salyut program;   Leonid Popov- former Soviet cosmonaut;   The Association of Space Explorers-  is a non-profit organization with a membership composed of people who have completed at least one Earth orbit in space.   Follow Dorin:   Linkedin- Twitter Facebook Dumitru Dorin Prunariu's Wikipedia Page   His Foundation- Cosmonaut Dumitru Dorin Prunariu's Foundation     Follow Javier: Website Instagram LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Youtube Linktree   Join our Patron and support The Endurance Cartel Podcast

In this episode: We meet Libby Jackson, the Human Exploration Programme Manager at the UK Space Agency, and author of two books for young people on space exploration: Galaxy Girls: 50 Amazing Stories of Women in Space published in 2018, and the recently published Space Explorers: 25 Extraordinary Stories of Space Exploration and Adventure. Libby is one of Britain's leading experts in human spaceflight and she's passionate about sharing stories on that topic with young people to encourage them to follow their passions in life. Space was Libby's childhood inspiration, and she has worked in the space industry since she earned her degrees in Physics from Imperial College and Astronautics and Space Engineering from Cranfield University. She began working at Europe's control center for the International Space Station as a flight instructor and controller in 2007, and a few years later, became director for the European Space Agency's ISS Columbus module. She joined the UK Space Agency in 2014 as spokesperson for the first British ESA astronaut Tim Peake's mission to the International Space Station and has remained there since.   In our conversation, Jackson explains how she wrote a “Travel Guide to Mars” when she was just nine years old, how, at age 17, she shadowed a mission control worker at NASA Johnson Space Center, what it was like working at Europe's control center for the International Space Station, what inspired her to write her new book, and how the stories in it go beyond just facts — to include the emotions that the explorers experienced on their missions.   Describing her objective in writing her newest book, Libby says, “Here's a book I wish I had when I was 10, or 11 or 12. Something that tells these fantastic stories, gets behind just the pictures and the highlights of what you see. And I hope I get across just how exciting and brilliant a place [space] is.”   To learn more about Libby and her books, visit libbyjackson.com   Introductory and closing music: Paint the Sky by Hans Atom © Copyright 2015, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/hansatom/50718 Ft: Miss Judged

Julie Hartz | LinkedInJulie has an initial background in physics and geoscience that she acquired in her home country, Switzerland. After a year spent on travels and internships in marine biology and numerical modeling at the French National Geological Survey, she finally chose to settle far from home, in Sydney, Australia, to specialize in geochemistry.Soon after she started her postgraduate degree at Macquarie University, Julie discovered the interdisciplinary field of Astrobiology and decided to dedicate her academic life to the search for life in the Universe. Her ongoing and already awarded research focuses on the traces of microbial life that are preserved in rock samples from Martian analogues.Adventurer at heart, Julie flew a plane solo for the first time at the age of 15. She is always seeking the next challenge on land, in the air, or under water. Certified deep scuba diver, Julie recently let go of air tanks and regulators to start diving deep under water on a single breath. Committed to empower women in sports and science, in 2012 she co-founded the first Women's Soccer Team of her home University in Switzerland that is still thriving in the regional championship today.Learn more about Womars at:https://www.womars.co.uk/

Yes, yes! We as well are going to explore space. Aldo speaks to Prof. Frans von der Dunk, an eminent authority in Space Law about what the effects are when more humans make their move out of our atmosphere. What is next for us in Space? Can SpaceX enforce its own legal system on Mars? And what happens when someone is killed in Space? Loads of questions to which our guest has fascinating answers.  Prof. von der Dunk's university website at Nebraska-Lincoln can be found here: https://law.unl.edu/frans-von-der-dunk/  Check out Frans' consultancy website here: https://black-holes.eu Guest Introduction: In this episode we are going to explore space. More particularly we are going to look at how human intervention will have an effect on Space and I am very happy that I am joined today by an absolute authority on the matter.  Professor Frans von der Dunk is a HARVEY & SUSAN PERLMAN ALUMNI AND OTHMER PROFESSOR OF SPACE LAW at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln  and Associate Research Professor at Lazarski University in Warsaw, Poland.  It is safe to say that Frans von der Dunk knows what he is talking about having published over 200 articles on the topic. He was also the author of the first comprehensive Handbook of Space Law and is a Series Editor of Studies in Space Law.  There are way too many accolades, recognitions and acknowledgements to mention when you have a guest like this Professor - so I am not going into detail.  Professor von der Dunk is being called in as an advisor by several government agencies and institutions such as the European Commission, The European Space Agency, the United Nations, OECD and a variety of other national space initiatives such as Japan, Brazil, UAE, Saudi-Arabia, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands.  He is an often seen guest in television programs made about space and if you haven't seen it yet I would highly recommend a TEDX Talk he held in Vienna in 2016 speaking about why we need Space Lawyers. My guest is particularly proud of his  cooperation with the Association of Space Explorers on Near-Earth Object Threat Mitigation as well as his signature, along with many Nobel Prize winners and other luminaries, of the original 100 Times Asteroid Day Declaration. I am sure I missed a lot in this amazing resume but here goes nothing!   Frans - a very warm welcome!

Libby Jackson is one of Britain's leading experts in human spaceflight, having spent over a decade working at the forefront of the field. Space was a childhood passion and after completing degrees in physics at Imperial College and astronautics and space engineering at Cranfield University, she has worked in the space industry ever since. Libby spent seven years working at the European Space Agency's Mission Control for the International Space Station in a number of roles including her dream job as a Columbus Flight Director. She played a key role in Tim Peake's mission to the International Space Station and continues to work in the field. Libby is a frequent contributor on television and radio, including Stargazing Live, The Big Think: Should We Go To Mars? and Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes? Accompanied by my first ever co-host, my 10 year old daughter, Amélie, we spent a brilliant hour chatting with Libby about space, her earliest recollections of being fascinated with it and followed by some heart in mouth stories from mission control. We discussed how space is such a huge industry now that there are so many ways for young people to get in and how annoying it still is that there are blue and pink aisles in toy shops. Why is mission control such a quiet, almost spiritual, place that fills us with such awe and excitement? How does the extensive training prepare you for all eventualities? And the moral of Libby's tale – ALWAYS ask the question, the answer might be no but if you don't ask you will never know if it could have been yes. Seize every opportunity that comes your way and find what it is you love and drive towards it full steam ahead!Libby is passionate about sharing stories of human spaceflight and encouraging young people to follow their passions in life. Her first book, A Galaxy of Her Own: Amazing Stories of Women in Space was published in 2017 and Space Explorers: 25 Extraordinary Stories of Space Exploration and Adventure was published in 2020.We have a copy of the first book and it is fascinating, supremely interesting and beautifully illustrated – the next one is firmly on Amélie's birthday list! You can follow Libby on:Twitter: libbyjackson__IG: libbyjackson__Facebook: Libby JacksonWebsite: www.libbyjackson.com (where you can order her awesome books)

The crew performed neurovestibular, cardiovascular, cardiopulmonary, metabolic, and musculoskeletal medical experiments on themselves and 48 rats, expanding our knowledge of human and animal physiology both on earth and in space flight. In addition, the crew performed 16 engineering tests aboard the Orbiter Columbia and 20 Extended Duration Orbiter Medical Project experiments. The mission was accomplished in 225 orbits of the Earth. Launching March 22, 1996, Searfoss flew his second mission as pilot of STS-76 aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. During this 9-day mission the STS-76 crew performed the third docking of an American spacecraft with the Russian space station Mir. In support of a joint U.S./Russian program, the crew transported to Mir nearly two tons of water, food, supplies, and scientific equipment, as well as U.S. Astronaut Shannon Lucid to begin her six-month stay in space. STS-76 included the first ever spacewalk on a combined Space Shuttle-Space Station complex. The flight crew also conducted scientific investigations, including European Space Agency sponsored biology experiments, the Kidsat earth observations project, and several engineering flight tests. Completed in 145 orbits, STS-76 landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on March 31, 1996. Searfoss commanded a seven person crew on the STS-90 Neurolab mission which launched on April 17, 1998. During the 16-day Spacelab flight the crew served as both experiment subjects and operators for 26 individual life science experiments focusing on the effects of microgravity on the brain and nervous system. STS-90 was the last and most complex of the twenty-five Spacelab missions NASA has flown. Neurolab's scientific results will have broad applicability both in preparing for future long duration human space missions and in clinical applications on Earth. Completed in 256 orbits, STS-90 landed at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on May 3, 1998. FEBRUARY 2003
