It's estimated that 44 million Americans experience hearing loss, but only one-fifth get help. Research has shown that there is a significant relationship between hearing loss, cognitive decline and depression in the elderly. In 2022, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that hearing aids can be sold over-the-counter without a prescription to adults over the age of 18. This long sought-after change helps consumers frustrated by expensive exams and even more expensive devices. World-renowned hearing expert Professor De Wet Swanepoel explains what this means for consumers this edition of Late Night Health. Learn how adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss are now able to buy OTC hearing aids online and in stores, without a prescription. The high cost of prescription hearing aids, which are not covered by basic Medicare, has discouraged millions from buying the devices. In their address to the IIEA, John FitzGerald and Edgar Morgenroth present their recent IIEA publication on the Northern Ireland subvention, which considers what the financial costs for the government in Ireland would be of Irish unification, using data from 2019. They discuss the findings from their paper, including that covering the Northern Ireland deficit would cost around 5% of Irish national income, and raising Northern Ireland's public service pay rate and welfare rates to levels south of the border would cost another 5% of national income. According to FitzGerald and Morgenroth, if Northern Ireland were to immediately address the cause of its very low productivity, especially the inadequacies of its educational system, when such action matured in 25 or 30 years, this could substantially reduce the cost of unification. A quicker productivity win would also be available if Northern Ireland could persuade the large number of emigrants who are university graduates living in England to return. About the Speakers: John FitzGerald is Co-Chair of the Institute of International and European Affairs Economists Group, a member of the UK Group, and an Honorary Fellow, and Adjunct Professor of Economics at Trinity College Dublin. He is also a Research Affiliate at the Economic and Social Research Institute, and a Member of the Royal Irish Academy. He was a member of the Central Bank of Ireland Commission from 2010 to 2020 and he was Chairman of the Irish government's Climate Change Advisory Council until January 2021. Dr Edgar Morgenroth is a member of the Institute of International and European Affairs Economists Group and UK Group, and a full Professor of Economics at DCU Business School, Dublin City University. He has held positions at the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), Keele University, and the Strategic Investment Board of Northern Ireland (SIB). He is a Fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences and a Fellow of the Regional Studies Association, having served as its vice chairman and treasurer.

Life without struggles is no life at all and what accompanies these struggles is ambiguity, uncertainty, and disruptions. Coping under these tenuous conditions means deciphering new goals, weighing options, and being future-forward while responding with adaptive mental and emotional flexibility; all made possible by one's evolving Executive Function. However, individuals who have experienced adverse childhood experiences develop a lifelong style of being mistrustful which poses its unique challenges, raising issues in the domain of personal health and interpersonal cooperation. On this episode, award-winning psychologist and elected fellow of the US National Academy of Medicine, British Academy, UK Academy of Medical Sciences, and Association of Psychological Science, Professor Terrie E. Moffitt, discusses how activating strong Executive Function to think clearly and systematically under highly stressful conditions is truly hard and it affects all types of decision making including the decisions to vaccinate. By improving Executive Function such as self-control, emotional agility, and perspective taking, individuals can approach complex decision making in interesting and fruitful ways.About Professor Terrie E MoffittTerrie E. Professor Terrie E. Moffitt, Professor of Social Development in the Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry Centre at King's College London. Synopsis: Repeated mental-health assessments in a birth cohort followed to age 45 reveal that mental disorder eventually affects virtually everyone. Findings challenge our field’s over-reliance on researching and treating specific mental disorders diagnosed in cross-sectional snapshots. Bio: Terrie E. Moffitt’s expertise is in the areas of lifelong aging, mental health, longitudinal research methods, developmental theory, neuropsychology, and gene-environment interplay. She is the associate director of the Dunedin Longitudinal Study, which follows a 1972 birth cohort in New Zealand. She also founded the Environmental Risk Longitudinal Twin Study (E-Risk), which follows a 1994 birth cohort in the UK. Dr. Moffitt is a licensed clinical psychologist, with specialization in neuropsychological assessment. Her service includes as a trustee of the Nuffield Foundation (UK), chair of the Board on Board on Behavioral, Cognitive and Sensory Sciences at the National Academies of Sciences, member of the National Advisory Council on Aging (US-NIH), and chair of the jury for the Klaus J. Jacobs Prize (Switzerland). Business Building InsightsWhen you’re open to opportunities they’re more likely to show up because you’re looking for them. Marketing is the way you bring people to you. Be intentional through creating a marketing plan. You don’t have to do all the things. You just have to do the key things that drive results. Be clear who you’re marketing to. Analyze your competition not to compare yourself to them but to differentiate yourself from them. Marketing is psychology. You persuade someone to come to you as opposed to someone else. by standing out and offering something they need or want. Put intention, effort and budget behind what’s working.
