Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Nicole Henry, Renowned Jazz Vocalist About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Nicole Henry, is a renowned, multiple award-winning jazz singer, whose dynamic, soulful voice, incredible range, impeccable phrasing, and powerful bluesy-gospel emotional delivery, have made her one of the world's most highly acclaimed vocalists. In 2002, after being discovered singing in a jazz trio in Miami, the Miami New Times named her the Best Solo Musician of the year. She's gone on to record 8 spectacular albums including, “The Nearness of You”, “Teach Me Tonight”, “The Very Thought of You”, “Embraceable”, “Summer Sessions”, her latest album, “Time to Love Again”, which has already had 4 top-charting singles - and I can't resist mentioning one of my all-time favourite albums, “So Good, So Right: Nicole Henry Live”, recorded at the renowned Feinstein's 54 Below nightclub in New York City. Four of her albums have landed in the Top 10 on the U.S. Billboard, JazzWeek, UK and Japan jazz charts. Her repertoire ranges from the Great American Songbook, classic and contemporary jazz, pop standards, blues and original material. And get this: in 2013, she received the "Soul Train Award" for "Best Traditional Jazz Performance", winning out over George Benson, Jeffrey Osborne, Chaka Khan, Tony Bennett, Marc Anthony and Terrence Blanchard. She is universally adored by music critics. The New York Times said, “Every gesture and inflection conveys confidence and mastery, and she creates the sense of being in the presence of a pop-soul superwoman.” And Broadway World said, “So powerful is her charisma, so unique is her personality, so rich is her music, so abandoned is her joy, that you can't watch her without being drawn in." And in my opinion, that's an understatement. Our guest's latest album, entitled, “Time to Love Again”, has been described by Downbeat Magazine as “exuberant, joyous, and immaculately executed.” Her latest single, which is her fourth charting single from the album, is called “Is It a Crime”, and it was recently added as the #1 breakthrough single on the UK Soul Charts. Episode 73. Host Troy Saunders interviews the Queen of Sophisticated Soul, Candace Woodson. They start by talking about how a small-town girl from Kentucky became a queen. Candace explains that she grew up in a family that loved all genres of music. She went to school and learned about the music industry while continuing to develop her craft to pursue her epic award-winning career. Candace wants everyone to know that she is that little girl holding a brush in the mirror, singing those great songs where you need to know every note and how to express what makes the song special. Candace Woodson has a lifelong passion for performing and a talent for resilience she calls “stick to it-ness”.Candace shares amazing advice given to her by Pam Sawyer, the songwriter who penned “Love Child” for the Supremes. Sawyer told her, “You want to find a song that when somebody is in the car, that they don't get out until they hear all of that song until the end. You don't want a song that when someone is driving to the store and the radio is in the middle of the song, they get out of the car anyway. You want the song where they have to listen to the end.” That's an amazing lesson for everyone looking for a career in music.Candace's chart-topping singles include “The Answer Is No,” a defiant female empowerment ballad. “The Answer Is No” hit #1 on the UK Soul Chart Top 30 and has continued to receive airplay on Smooth Jazz Radio as well as other top stations. “Midas Touch (Ooh Ooh),” which hit the #1 spot on the UK Soul Charts, is an up-tempo track perfect to help get the party started.Another hit for Candace is “Free,” a funky old-school dance anthem that conveys hope and positivity in the wake of adversity. This is a message she conveys stemming from her own experience and feeling after receiving her last cancer treatment at the Medical University of South Carolina. With the help of UK promoter Steve Ripley, who has worked on hits for Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Maxwell, and Jody Watley, “Free” rose to #12 on the UK Soul Chart Top 30.This interview is a joy, with so much fun and happiness. Having toured the world over, for five years, as a member of the reformatted legendary R&B group Blackstreet, led by the New Jack Swing creator himself, Teddy Riley, Lenny has had a hefty helping of what a major label star’s life would be like. Yet, he still grinds just as hard as any local artist you may come across. That’s what has kept Lenny Harold on the radar of many music lovers. From his winning tenure on Showtime at The Apollo [under old moniker Chanj] to his ovation grabbing tributes to Patti Labelle and Berry Gordy in the years following. Lenny’s striking tenor range mixed with smooth vibrato has even turned many of today’s industry heavyweights into mere fans from the likes of Marsha Ambrosius to Jamie Foxx. This vocal prowess became highly evident on Lenny Harold’s first official offering, “The Journal of Wonders: Tale of The Phoenix in The Moon Labyrinth,” which led to an EP entitled “Yesterday Morning.” Which Lenny details as the full story behind “Waiting on Yesterday,” a song from that first project, of a romantic mistake. Two years later, while with Blackstreet, Lenny would then begin a new journey of reinvention, with a project entitled, “New Testament: Mountain High,” first of a trilogy of projects to come. This musical sharing would begin to truly solidify the seriousness of his artistry, as many more took notice and loved. With his latest single, “Heat” reaching number 7 on the UK Soul Charts, and the release of his highly anticipated album, “COSMIC,” exciting the hearts of his ‘Wonders’ [the name he gave his fans] and still introducing him to more ears, there’s only greatness from here. Lenny shares, “COSMIC is something bold, honest, sexy and beautiful, with love at it’s core. It’s a journey through my lense”
