Phil Gates was born in Chicago Ill., into a family of musicians that helped form his music style, and ability. Ivan Hampden Jr. , Founder and President/CEO of Hamptown Music Institute, was born and raised in New York City, and grew up in Harlem's musically diverse neighborhoods to the rhythms of R&B, Salsa, Caribbean, Jazz, Blues, Pop, Funk and whatever else trickled in. This saturation of music inspired Hampden to start playing the drums at the age of eight, with the local Catholic school marching band. By age 13, he was playing in local clubs in and around New York City, with Blues musicians who helped instill in him a sense of timing and groove. The musical diversity of his early youth set the foundation for Hampden's future work with percussion and keyboards. Hampden started his formal training in 1973, studying at the Jazz Mobile with Charlie Percep, and at Mannes College of Music with Norman Grossman. He went on to attend Bronx Community College in 1977, where he received private lessons at the Metropolitan Opera with Richard Horowitz. During his first semester at Bronx Community College, a friend told him about the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Hampden had to be involved and joined the orchestra—a position he still holds today. While at the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Hampden was also a drum and percussion instructor at the Harlem School of the Arts, and at Seton Hall University in the Black Music Department. But his talent reached far beyond Harlem. Hampden has touched and enhanced the New York theater community as well, performing for various shows on Broadway, The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, and many more.. Not only an accomplished drummer and percussionist, Hampden is also a producer and songwriter who collaborates with such artists as Luther Vandross, Nick Ashford, Chaka Khan, Eartha Kitt, and many others. Along with being Luther Vandross' drummer and co-writing partner for 17 years (which earned him recognition four(4)times from the Grammy Awards as a Musician, Arranger and Programmer on a number of Vandross's platinum recordings) until the time of the consummate musician's death , Hampden currently records and tours with other notable artists such as Stephanie Mills, Ashford & Simpson, Roberta Flack, Phil Perry, Vanessa Williams and Jennifer Lopez. In 2001, Hampden relocated to the south, where he continues to write and produce in between touring around the country and world. In fall 2007, Hampden signed on as an adjunct professor at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina, teaching recording production I and II, and audio postproduction. Today I'm going to talk to you about Shalamar an R&B soul music vocal group active since the late 1970's and throughout the 1980's. They were a dance group on Soul Train. Howard Hewett, Jody Watley, and Jeffrey Daniel.Shalamar had hits such as “A Night to Remember”, “Make That Move”, and “The Second Time Around” to name a few. One of my favorite songs by Shamalar is Second Time Around. It is a 1979 hit. The song is the first single from their album, Big Fun. Released in August 1979, the single went to number one on the single went to number one on the soul chart and was their most successful hit on the Hot 100 pop chart, reaching number eight in early 1980. The Second Time Around" also went to number one on the disco/dance chart in January 1980. The song was produced by Leon Sylvers III, who cowrote the song with William Shelby.Many times I've heard the song “Second Time Around”. And whenever it was played on the radio, somebody would say: Turn the radio up!” It was the song that you didn't want to miss. Watching the group Shalamar on television was even better. Somebody would say: They gettin' down! They singing that song. I might go a second time around and like it better.” That was somebody that paid attention to the lyrics. At first, lyrics were not written down for us to sing along with songs. But now, we can get the lyrics.At first, videos weren't seen. We mostly watched the performance of a group on Soul Train or American Bandstand. Now we can see the videos. We can rewind and watch Shalamar just as if we are playing a record as many times as we want to. We can see the group and hear the group.Times may have changed since the 70's, but Shalamar's music still makes us want to jam to their songs in the year of 2022. That's a long time. Audley Reid is one of Chicago's finest Contemporary jazz and R&B musicians. Audley L. Reid often referred to as "Reid", began his musical odyssey over 25 years ago. Proficient on all saxophones, Reid prefers the Alto Sax, and his passionate technique, smooth styling, and distinctive sound often draw comparisons to the music of David Sanborn and sax genius of the late Art Porter, Jr.Reid's effortless performances, across a wide range of musical genres including Jazz, Smooth Jazz, Blues, and R&B, has afforded him opportunities to perform with stars such as Buddy Guy, Phil Perry, Kim Fields, Nick Colionne, Howard Hewett, Will Downing, Ray Parker Jr., Michael Henderson, Vivian Green, and Norman Connors, before a multitude of audiences at various galas, venues and events throughout the United States, Mexico, Asia, Canada, Europe and his native country, Jamaica. Carolyn Griffey is an American female soul vocalist, and member of the soul funk group Shalamar. She is the daughter of Carrie Lucas and Solar Records boss Dick Griffey, who worked with Don Cornelius in the television program, Soul Train.Griffey grew up around The Whispers, Shalamar, Midnight Star, Dynasty, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and James Brown, who all appeared on Soul Train or who were signed to Solar Records. In 1990 she was signed to Sony Records as part of the dance-pop duo called 'Absolute'. This group released one album, For All Seasons, in 1990. Their singles included "Cheap Shot" and "Gotta Lambada" and "This Moment In Time" both (from the movie soundtrack of Lambada.)She has been the lead female vocalist of Shalamar since 2001. She appeared on ITV's Hit Me, Baby, One More Time in 2005, and has been touring the world with the Howard Hewett and Jeffrey Daniel.She also sang with the Andraé Crouch Gospel Choir, who are known for their work on Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror", "Keep the Faith" and "Will You Be There".Griffey currently resides in Memphis, Tennessee.In October 2009, Griffey performed with Hewett and Daniel in Shalamar at London's O2 Arena. This prompted a return for a tour in the UK in April 2010. They have been an annual feature at London's O2 Arena every December since 2010. In 2014 Griffey appeared with Howard Hewett and Jeffrey Daniel for two Shalamar concerts at the Manchester Ritz and London O2
