If you've ever tuned into a classic rock radio station and felt the electric hum of Southern rock filling your soul, chances are you've brushed shoulders—musically speaking—with Rodney Justo. Best known as the original lead singer of the legendary Atlanta Rhythm Section, Rodney's voice is more than just a sonic signature of the American South—it's the soundtrack to a generation. But to understand the full breadth of his musical journey, you've got to go back to Tampa, Florida, where the boy who would become a Southern rock icon first discovered his voice.Rodney Justo was born with rhythm in his veins. His father was a musician, and Tampa in the '50s and early '60s had a burgeoning music scene.By the time he was a teenager, Rodney was performing professionally, fronting bands and making a name for himself as a gifted rock and soul singer. In the mid-60s, Rodney's voice caught the ear of Roy Orbison's backing band, The Candymen. Rodney joined as lead vocalist, and it wasn't long before they began carving out their own identity. Touring constantly, performing alongside major acts, The Candymen were crucial in shaping Rodney's future. In the early '70s, he and his bandmates decided it was time to forge their own path. The Atlanta Rhythm Section was born. More than just a band, ARS was a musical collective, fusing rock, jazz, R&B, and pop into a smooth, sophisticated Southern sound that defied categorization.Rodney Justo was the voice on their self-titled 72 debut album. His vocals were powerful and expressive helping to define the Atlanta Rhythm Section's unique tone.Rodney left the band shortly after that first album—citing creative differences and a desire to focus on family. He became an in-demand session vocalist and performer, lending his golden pipes to countless recording projects throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s. His ability to shift between genres—from blue-eyed soul to polished pop to hard-edged rock—made him a go-to voice in studios from Florida to L.A.In the mid-90s, Rodney Justo returned to the Atlanta Rhythm Section. He stepped back into the spotlight once again performing hits like "So Into You," "Imaginary Lover," and "Spooky" live on stage. Rodney Justo brought new energy to the ARS catalogue—even if he hadn't originally recorded those songs. He made them his own, connecting with audiences across generations. Rodney Justo is more than t a great rock vocalist. He's a storyteller. He's filled with anecdotes, punchlines, and the kind of behind-the-scenes music lore that makes you lean in and listen. He's got tales from the road with Roy Orbison, recording sessions with legends, and enough stories about Southern rock's golden era to fill a memoir. He brings humour, humility, and a deep love of the craft to every conversation. Today he tours with Atlanta Rhythm Section and his voice hasn't lost any of its magic. There's still that same smooth phrasing, that soul-deep delivery, and that sly smile you can hear even when he's singing through the speakers. He continues to be a beloved figure in Southern rock circles, a revered elder statesman of American music, and a performer who gives his all every single night.Rodney Justo may not be a household name in the same way as some of his peers, but among musicians, he's a legend. His influence runs deep—not just through Atlanta Rhythm Section, but through decades of rock, soul, and Southern music. Rodney's journey is one of persistence, evolution, and soulful resilience. From teenage gigs in Tampa dive bars to singing for thousands on tour with ARS, from the slick sessions of Studio One to today's digital world, Rodney Justo has remained a voice worth listening to—a true original in the ever-changing world of American rock music. You're going to LOVE his story. To find out more head to https://www.atlantarhythmsection.com/and contact me with any feedback, comments or queries.https://www.abreathoffreshair.com.au

After much debate and a veto from Mayor Steve Tumlin, the council voted 4-3 in favor of full residential use for one building, citing challenges in attracting commercial tenants. The decision reflects ongoing efforts to balance housing needs and market realities in the area. STORY 2: UPDATE: Six Arrested After Shooting, Police Chase in Marietta Six men, aged 18-23, were arrested after a shooting at Lakeside at Town Center Apartments in Marietta led to a police chase. The suspects, armed with handguns and an AK-47-style rifle, allegedly fired at two victims, Deshawn Hirsch and Miykael Davis, who were injured but later discharged from the hospital. The suspects fled in a BMW, crashing during a police pursuit. Multiple apartments and vehicles were damaged by gunfire, and police are investigating if others were involved. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Marietta Police or submit anonymous tips. STORY 5: 'A Conversation Starter': Marietta Super on State Phone Ban Georgia's "Distraction-Free Education Act" (HB 340), awaiting Gov. Brian Kemp's signature, would ban cellphone use in public schools for grades K-8 starting July 2026. Schools must adopt policies by January 2026 but can choose how to enforce the ban. Marietta City Schools already uses Yondr pouches to restrict phone access in middle schools and is considering expanding the policy. Superintendent Grant Rivera sees the bill as a statewide acknowledgment of the issue, sparking broader discussions, including potential high school bans. Cobb County schools, however, prefer a flexible, teacher-led approach to managing devices. Let's get this out of the way up front: when you think of rock albums, Rick James is not the artist that immediately comes to mind. But when former founding podcaster Brian Dickhute comes back and wants to do the album, we find it difficult to deny him.James Ambrose Johnson, Jr. was born in Buffalo where he was in a number of groups and bands as a teenager. He joined the US Navy Reserves to avoid being drafted, then moved to Toronto in 1964 where he formed the rock band “The Minah Byrds.” Unfortunately he failed to let Uncle Sam know of his change of address, and would spend a few months in jail on charges of desertion. Shortly after his release he moved to California where he honed his craft in a number of rock and funk bands. He became a bigger hit and better known after signing with Gordy Records in 1977. Street Songs is Rick James' fifth solo studio album, and his most successful. It was an immediate success and went to number 3 on the US pop charts, while also spending 20 weeks at the number 1 spot on the US R&B chart.James would go on to be a successful producer and songwriter. His personal life would be unstable, and a hard life including drug abuse contributed to his early death in 2004. WTR Host Lynch is out this week, so former founding host Brian Dickhute comes back with his funk on for this podcast. Give It To Me BabyThe lead single and lead-off track to the album went to number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the US R&B chart. It is a big dance song with a strong horn section, and the lyrics are pretty straightforward. Surprisingly, this is the best selling single from the album, even better than “Super Freak,” though that song would have more longevity. Ghetto LifeThis deeper cut was released as the third single from the album, though it barely missed cracking the Billboard charts when it reached number 102. The lyrics in this funk song depict life in a depressed Buffalo inner city, where hustles were needed to make ends meet.Super FreakHere is the single that would become Rick James' signature song. This ode to “a very kinky girl” reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and features background vocals from the Temptations. James would get further benefit when the song was used by MC Hammer as the foundation for his hit single “U Can't Touch This.”Below the Funk (Pass the J)Another deeper cut, this funky track is somewhat autobiographical, describing how James grew up on the street as the child of a single mother “on the corners hangin' out with all the hoodlums.” Rick James would struggle with drug addiction throughout his life. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Maybellene by Chuck Berry (from the motion picture “Porky's”)This is the movie that started the teen sex genre, with practical jokes and run-ins with corrupt authority figures. STAFF PICKS:Blood Stains by Agent OrangeWayne opens the staff picks with a heavy metal power punk trio. The group takes its name from both the defoliant used by the military in Vietnam and the county in metro Los Angeles from which the group hails. The song is considered “skate punk,” and was used in Tony Hawk's pro skater video game.Alien by the Atlanta Rhythm SectionBruce brings us the sole single from ARS's tenth studio album Quinella. The lyrics are about feeling out of place and away from home. This keyboard-heavy song peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the last top 40 hit by the group.Winning by SantanaRob features a song originally written and performed by Russ Ballard, and covered by Santana with Alex Ligertwood singing lead. It went to number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, one of Santana's biggest hits. It is a positive song about overcoming difficulties.Say Goodbye to Hollywood by Billy JoelBrian closes out the staff picks with this song paying homage to Ronnie Spector. While this track premiered several years prior on the Turnstyles album, the live version from the Songs In the Attic album came out in 1981. It was recorded in the Milwaukee arena, and was more successful as a live song than as a studio song. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Hooked on Classics by the Royal Philhormonic Orchestra and Louis ClarkThis instrumental mosaic of well known classics from the symphony was a hit on the charts in 1981. Episode 148: There Were 37.... June 28, 2024 There were 37 episodes of Tales Vinyl Tells that I recorded and posted only on the StudioMillsWellness.com website from the first in December 2019 til March 2022. That's the month that I started doing a live weekly radio program at RadioFreeNashville. It was and remains today based on the great LPs of the 60s especially, many of which I had in my own library. When I started with RadioFreeNashville, I was confident that all royalty details were legit and I then got on Podbean.com who distributes my program to Apple, iHeart, Player FM, Spotify (they no longer use because of their pay structure to artists), and many other podcast services. This is a lot of what you probably don't really care about but there's a reason I tell you this. (Exhale) This episode and many in the future contain a lot of the music in those 37 episodes that didn't get much more play on TVT after #37 because I try to repeat as little as possible. I have no playlist but, oh yes, I do have favorites. One of them is the Doobie's Another Park Another Sunday. So there are a lot of great tunes I'm bringing into the light these days. Here we've got a Song in the Key of Life, one by a one-man band, two from a couple great musicians from the Atlanta area and played important roles in Atlanta Rhythm Section and Classics IV. Santana does a great Classics redux. And there's one about a little yellow pill that your momma took which kept her cool. Mine did not take those tranks. She should have. Anyway, hope you dig it. Next week is the 4th of July and we'll have our celebration for you then, but for now dig these tunes, man! AND, I almost forgot. The JIMJAM this time is Nights in White Satin. Join in! Listen live to Tales Vinyl Tells Wednesdays at 5 PM Central on RadioFreeNashville.org. Thank you, everybody, who donates monthly to me and Tales Vinyl Tells. It isn't free to make this program happen and your support is a really nice gift to me, I appreciate you! If you think this is a worthwhile venture into the great album cuts of the 60s & 70s, you can donate a little or a lot at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. My deepest thanks to you!

First and foremost--Jim swore way too much on this episode. He (I) counted the F bombs and the sum is either impressive or embarrassing. Shield your kids from this one. It's not even good, quality swearing. It's gratuitous, like every 80's movie showing boobs--whether it added to the story or not. Bad example. The Classics IV featuring Dennis Yost a enjoyed two more top-10 hits, "Stormy" (1968, Hot 100 No. 5) and "Traces" (1969, Hot 100 No. 2, Easy Listening No. 2), the latter of which Emory Gordy also co-wrote. Cobb and Buie borrowed heavily from 1936's "Every Day with Jesus" by Robert C. and Wendell P. Loveless to pen the top 20 follow-up "Every Day With You Girl" (1969, Hot 100 No. 19, Easy Listening No. 12). "Spooky," "Stormy," and "Traces" each sold more than one million units, and all were awarded gold discs by the R.I.A.A. Those three hits plus "Every Day With You Girl" also appeared in the 1977 film The Chicken Chronicles. In 1970, Cobb, Buie and Daughtry formed what would become Atlanta Rhythm Section with Candymen drummer Robert Nix. However, the former two remained active as writers and producers for the band.[5] After recovering from a car accident suffered in May 1969, Eaton left the band and later on became an electronics expert, working for Unisys. 1970–1975: Later years With Yost as the remaining original member, the group changed its name again to Dennis Yost and the Classics IV. After Imperial was absorbed into United Artists Records, the group signed with MGM South. In 1971 after working for other Lowery artists Tommy Roe and the Swingin' Medallions, Michael Huey became the drummer. During this period Huey also became the staff drummer for Lowery Studios and later moved to Los Angeles. The band's subsequent releases were less successful, despite the final top 40 hit, "What Am I Crying For?" which peaked at No. 39 in 1972. By this time, the partnership between Cochran and Buie ended. After the release of "My First Day Without Her" in 1975, Yost disbanded the group and returned to Florida. 1975–2001: After Classics IV In 1977, Yost returned to performing on the Holiday Inn circuit, this time simply under his own name or "The Classic One." (He lost the rights to the Classics IV name.) The same year, Eaton got a job on Jacksonville's computer system in 1977 and later on worked for the City Hall. He is currently a professor at Florida Community College. During the mid 70s to early 80s, the Atlanta Rhythm Section scored a number of Top 40 hits, notably "Doraville", "So in to You", "Imaginary Lover", "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight", "Do It or Die", and their rendition of "Spooky". During the 1990s, Yost used many backup bands including Steve "Stevie G" Guettler (guitar, vocals), Jeff "JT" Strickler (bass guitar, vocals), Steve Farrell (guitar, vocals), Mike Wilson (keyboards, vocals), and Wes Armstrong (drums, vocals) of the Atlanta-based group The Rockerz. He also used Nashville-based Steve Jarrell and The Sons of the Beach Band, as well as the Hitts out of Virginia Beach, Virginia, with Ed Hutchison (guitar, backing vocals), Ramon Gonzalez (keyboards, backing vocals), Andy Crosswell (drums), and David Voss. Other incarnations included Toledo musicians Danny Joe Greenburg on Bass, and Sid Siddall on drums. Nashville bassist Louie Meek also did a stint with the band. In 1993, Classics IV was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. 2001–2006: Reformation In 2001, Yost underwent successful throat surgery for a condition that had severely impaired his singing voice. Later on, he started touring under the Classics IV name, which he gained the rights to. 2006–2008: Death of Yost On July 11, 2006, Yost fell down a flight of stairs and suffered serious brain trauma. To assist Yost and his wife with their medical bills, a benefit concert was held on March 25, 2007, at Rhino's Live in Cincinnati, Ohio. The concert did not significantly benefit Yost or his wife financially as hoped, as expenses far exceeded the money raised, leaving the event in the red. After the accident, Tom Garrett was chosen by Yost to replace him as lead singer. The plan was for Yost to make a few yearly "special appearances", and gradually have Garrett take over as the leader of the band. However, Yost was able to perform with them for only one appearance in 2008. Yost died at age of 65 from respiratory failure on December 7, 2008, the 40th anniversary of the entrance of "Stormy" into the Hot 100's top 10. 2008-present: Post-Yost The current line-up of Classics IV consists of Tom Garrett as lead vocalist, Kevin Lloyd on bass, James Yoder on keyboards, Paul Weddle on saxophone, John Kerner on guitar, and Shawn White on drums. The group regularly tours to this day.
Dean Daughtry, keyboardist, was with the Classics IV during their heyday in the late 1960's when the band had three songs reach the Top 5 on the pop charts. In 1970, Dean was a co-founder of the Atlanta Rhythm Section (ARS) with other members of The Candymen, with whom Dean was also a member of in his early years. For nearly 50 years Dean was a mainstay in ARS, which has had six Top 20 hits. Dean passed away on January 26, 2023. On this episode multi-award winning program director Ray White reaches back in the archives and features his May of 2010 interview with Dean before he took the stage. He shared with us his insights into the Classics IV and the emergence of ARS and their then current album Eufala. We close out this episode with an icon in American music, David Crosby, who left this world on January 18, 2023. We take you back to his days with The Byrds, Crosby Stills & Nash and his solo work. Two artists in bands that played a key role in many lives are featured right here on the CAT!
Brian Mesko was born into a family of musicians, and raised in Little Rock, AR, Mesko began piano lessons at age 8, moving to guitar at age 10. By 12 he was playing drums, and he picked up the bass at age 14. As a teen Brian was gigging professionally, and even played drums on a short tour in Turkey at age 18. While still in high school he studied Jazz Theory & Ensemble at UALR under Michael Carenbauer (who studied under Pat Metheny at Berklee). Taking these credits on to MTSU, Brian completed a bachelor's degree in Recording Industry. Mesko lived in the Nashville area from 1997 – 2005 and played with such international jazz greats as Les McCann, Tony Monaco, Dr. Lonnie Smith, John Jorgensen and Jeff Coffin. After moving to central Virginia in 2005, Brian has been privileged to work with such jazz artists as Robert Jospe, Butch Taylor, Dane Alderson, John D'earth, Bobby Read, Charles Owens, Jonah Kane-West, Liz Barnes, any many more. Brian formed The Rootdowns organ trio with members of Butcher Brown, DJ Williams Projekt, The Big Payback, and Skydog, and they released their debut album, "Songs With Friends" in 2013. In 2015 he started The Danktet, an instrumental trio whose collective influences create a unique blend of jazz, funk, rock, pop, reggae, blues, and R&B. With Australian native Dane Alderson of the Yellow Jackets on bass, and multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Forrest Young on drums, they released their first album, "One Thing Right" in 2016. Aside from his own original projects, Brian has since joined several local projects, playing guitar and/or bass with the Robert Jospe Express, Lenny Marcus, Terry Brown Ascension Project, The Ambassador, Mojo Parker, Melissa and the Growlers, The Meskos Electric Revue, Jstop Latin Soul and Andrew Winn. Brian currently resides with his wife and son in Roanoke, VA working as a session player, performer, and guitar professor/ensemble director at the University of Lynchburg. Tim Martin started his solo career at the ripe age of 16 playing every Friday and Saturday evening at a restaurant called the Olde Tinker Mill Inn. It was a formal dining area upstairs with a pizza and beer meeting place downstairs. He would play for the diners upstairs during dinner then move downstairs for the later, livelier crowd. Building a song list of artists such as James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, CSN&Y, Eagles, and originals he developed his style. Getting paid 15 dollars a night and free pizza seemed like a good deal to the teenaged Tim. What this job did was help him learn how to be comfortable and entertaining on stage and find what kind of tunes worked with different audiences. 42 years later he is still going strong as ever. Tim has played and still works in clubs, resorts, festivals, concerts, and private functions across southwest Virginia such as The Hotel Roanoke, Wintergreen Resort, Primeland Resort, Snowshow, Greenbrier, Homestead and more. He plays local Roanoke clubs such as The Quarter, Awful Arthurs, Annie Moore's Tavern, Brambleton Deli and more. He has shared the stage and opened for artist such as Savoy Brown, Vern Gosdin, Jonathan Edwards, Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Little River Band, Southern Culture on The Skids and more. He has released two albums over the years. Real Life Dreamers in 1992 with his duo partner Mark Wilbourn and Wishes in 2000, both all original songs written by Tim.
