Trombone-playing singer-songwriter Aubrey Logan hails from the picturesque surroundings near Seattle, WA. Raised by her two music-educator parents, she began her artistic endeavors as a child singing in theatre and in church, Thoughtful songwriters like Billy Joel & Carole King influenced her early childhood via her singing mother and trumpet-playing father, as well as the soulful musicianship of American horn bands such as Chicago, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Steeley Dan, and more.  Things took an intriguing turn when she picked up the trombone at the age of 12, igniting her passion for the jazz tradition. Aubrey possesses a distinct yet truly unique voice, able to take a song from practically any era or genre and really make it her own, through surprising vocal melisma, scatt jazz interludes, and a blissful warm tone that expands over her entire catalog of originals to innovatively-arranged hits. Her accolades are as impressive as they are extensive, from clinching victory in the prestigious Shure Montreux Voice competition in 2009 to securing a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music, where she stands as an alumna. Notably recognized as a top trombone player by Downbeat magazine, Aubrey has graced stages globally, touring alongside renowned artists like Dave Koz & Postmodern Jukebox. For as much success as Aubrey has had in her career, she doesn't take herself too seriously. You'll catch her often making highly entertaining and humorous jabs at her own craft on stage or posts on her social platforms parodying overly serious jazz musicians, overplayed Christmas music, or social media trends. Aubrey attained the #1 Billboard spot for contemporary jazz with the Dave Koz & the Summer Horns album, "From A to Z," alongside the success of her own album "Where the Sunshine is Expensive." Aubrey's musical footprint can be traced from Seattle to Boston to LA, and now Austin, TX, where she continues to captivate audiences with her extraordinary vocals and unmatched Jazz finesse. A seasoned performer, Aubrey Logan has toured extensively with her band across Europe and the US, performing her music to students and fans alike through engaging clinics and performances at various institutions. Her musical prowess has also led her to collaborate with symphonies and orchestras nationwide, with both her original compositions and covers being brought to life by esteemed orchestras like the Seattle Symphony, Boston Pops, and Cincinnati Symphony. In a recent heartwarming ode to motherhood, Aubrey is gearing up to release a single in honor of Mother's Day, reflecting her newest role as a mom. Looking ahead, she is also currently immersed in creating her debut big band album set to be unveiled in late 2024, promising yet another dimension of her artistry to be enjoyed by music enthusiasts worldwide. Exuding lively youthfulness mingled with veteran musical maturity, Aubrey has a voice that seamlessly weaves through her songs with raw and natural elegance.

Trombone-playing singer-songwriter Aubrey Logan hails from the Seattle area. Raised by her two music-educator parents, she began her artistic endeavors as a child singing in theatre and in church. She credits her  singing mother and trumpet-playing father for early influences like  singers/songwriters  Billy Joel and Carole King, as well as the soulful musicianship of American horn bands such as Chicago, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Steely Dan, and more.  And, at the age of 12, things took an intriguing turn when she picked up the trombone, igniting her passion for the jazz tradition.  Aubrey possesses a distinct yet truly unique voice, able to take a song from practically any era or genre and really making it her own. Her accolades are as impressive as they are extensive, from clinching victory in the prestigious Shure Montreux Voice competition in 2009 to securing a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music, where she stands as an alumna. The media refer to Aubrey Logan as “The Queen of Sass,” and it's easy to see why. Her concerts are a mix of excellent musicality, jaw-dropping vocals, expert trombone-playing, a breathtaking array of originals and original takes on cover songs and, well…fun! Her heart wrenching musical stories has audiences in tears just before her comedic relief has them in stitches. Both of these elements can be found in her latest album “Aubrey Logan & Her Bigger Than Average Band” dropped November 1 via MWO Records.  Our delightful and enlightening conversation, coupled with samples from her new release, will surely make you want to know and hear more from this self-described, genre bending artist who calls herself “a pop singer who uses a contemporary voice and sings jazz.”

A pop and jazz singer, trombone player and songwriter whose body of work is underscored by the integrity of a performer that is able to stretch herself emotionally across a musical landscape that defies description. Logan won the Audience's Choice Award and the Jury's First Place Award at the 2009 Shure-Monreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. She was also an American Idol in 2009, but was eliminated in the early rounds. She is a featured artist for Postmodern Jukebox and the Dave Koz band. Recognized on the global stage as a performer who can deliver in the most informal of settings as well as full festival audiences, her work is praised as being accessible, fresh and dynamic. With a #1 album Where the Sunshine is Expensive already under her belt, Aubrey returns to the spotlight with her follow up collection, Standard, a journey into her musical past with covers of the some of the most recognizable tracks that have ever been made, plus her original work ‘Done Pretending' and ‘Louboutins 2.0'. Moving between Jazz, Funk, and tender love songs, to Calypso-infused rhythms and traditionally inspired fusions, her vocals and trombone playing sway between the caress of a long-lost love to triumphant powerhouse performances. She has worked with some incredible collaborators including Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach, Josh Groban, Smokey Robinson, Patrice Rushen and Pharrell Williams.

This week Ben, Jeff and Leo are still toking with the incredibly talented Jazz Musician Aubrey Logan! We will discuss Aubreys latest album,  Standard, we may even hear some clips! Attending one of Aubrey's shows is like going to the carnival and buying a ticket to the house of mirrors—one never knows what is going to be just around the corner. So one might expect that on an album named STANDARD, one would be hearing another retread of standard jazz tunes….with just another singer.  But just like that house of mirrors, you should expect to be surprised. Yes, you will hear some jazz classics…but not like you've ever heard them before. And you'll hear a couple of new jazz classics (penned by Ms. Logan herself).  But you may also hear an opera tune or a classic rock song that has been magically and seamlessly transformed by a jazz arrangement. At the end of the day, you will enjoy every track on this album as you experience a fresh take on timeless music. And as you sit back and close your eyes, you will realize that what you've just heard is anything but “standard". ————————————————— This episode is sponsored by Deadly Grounds Coffee "Its good to get a little Deadly" https://deadlygroundscoffee.com ————————————————— Check out Toking with the Dead Episode 1 https://vimeo.com/ondemand/twtde1 Buy awesome Merchandise! https://www.stilltoking.com/ https://teespring.com/stores/still-toking-with ————————————— Upcoming Shows and Tickets https://aubreylogan.veeps.com/stream/schedule Listen on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/track/4oaY9B4I92u3Kq4GJttZwJ?si=khPYFuWrShenImJ7Z9iGEQ Follow Aubrey Website:  https://aubreylogan.com/home Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aubreyloganmusic/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aubrey_logan/?hl=en YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/aubreyloganmusic Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5GIBLQgzkZKjBDRhVQ4j1z?si=5dH28ANCQhOMm38c4_MQEg Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/aubrey-logan/878480635 Still Toking With  https://www.stilltoking.com/ https://www.facebook.com/TokingwiththeDead/ https://www.instagram.com/stilltokingwith/ http://www.youtube.com/c/THETOKINGDEAD https://www.twitch.tv/stilltokingwith   Support Still Toking Enterprises https://www.paypal.me/thetokingdead https://www.facebook.com/groups/2658329444181663/?ref=br_rs https://www.facebook.com/groups/stilltokingcomics/   Produced by: The Dorkening Podcast Network https://TheDorkening.com Facebook.com/TheDorkening Youtube.com/TheDorkening Twitter.com/TheDorkening   Hellfire Radio https://www.hellfireradio.com/ https://www.facebook.com/scoopsandmischief/ https://www.instagram.com/scoopsandmischief/ https://www.facebook.com/HellfireRadio666/ https://www.instagram.com/hellfire_radio_666/   Check out Green Matters: https://www.facebook.com/GreenMattersMiddleboro/ Find out more at https://still-toking-with.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Another episode in my never-ending pursuit to bring all music to the masses! Or something like that. You can just tell how much fun it was to talk to Aubrey. Before our interview, I had commented to her that she sent me down a rabbit hole, because I'd never known of many female jazz trombonists. Well, let me tell you Rebels, there are plenty, and, as Aubrey explained, "And, we all know each other!" You gotta love speaking to anyone who can give you an answer like that. I think she's the first guest I've interviewed to have the last laugh on Simon Cowell. That is, unless you don't count the guy who was on bedpan duty when he was in the hospital. Joining the JAZZIZ Backstage Pass podcast today is the incredibly talented and eminently fashionable saxophonist Grace Kelly. Now, even if you don’t Grace Kelly by name, you’ve probably heard her before. She's performed with keyboardist Jon Batiste on The Late Show with Steven Colbert and was also among the performers at President Barack Obama’s first inauguration. She was also something of a protege of the late saxophone master Phil Woods. The two even released a joint album together, The Man with the Hat, in 2011, when she was just 20 years old. More recently, Kelly was awarded the top prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition for her original song "Feels Like Home" featuring Elliott Skinner. (Her win, it should be mentioned, came in the Country Music category, a testament to her amazing versatility.) Kelly also happens to crush it in the social media game. She’s posting music videos all the time, including, most recently, a mash-up of Billie Elish’s “Bad Guy” with Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough,” featuring bassist Nik West. Her most recent album is Go Time: Live in LA. Our conversation was sponsored by the Tucson Jazz Festival, which runs from January 10 through 20 in various locations around Tucson.           The media refer to #1 selling artist, Aubrey Logan as “The Queen of Sass.”  And it’s easy to see why. Her concerts are a mix of excellent musicality, jaw-dropping vocals, expert trombone-playing, a breathtaking array of originals and original takes on cover songs and, well…fun! Her heart wrenching musical stories has audiences in tears just before her comedic relief has them in stitches.   Aubrey Logan loves music, loves performing and loves her fans. And it shows.  “My relationship with the audience is the most fun I can legally have!” she says.  Very few artists can concentrate so fully on the music and yet be so connected to the people who have come to hear her.  And that connection is magic.   Aubrey has seen a lot of recent success.  Her debut album, Impossible, immediately shot to the top 10 on the iTunes, Billboard and Amazon charts.  And her next appearance on Summer Horns II, from A to Z (as a special guest of Dave Koz on Concord Records) became the #1 selling Contemporary Jazz Album.  Aubrey has spent more time at the top of the charts lately than she has in an airport, and travel has been a permanent fixture for her in the last couple of years.   Aubrey Logan has performed more than 250 shows since 2016.  Besides countless dates touring as a guest star with Postmodern Jukebox and another nationwide tour with Dave Koz and his all-star lineup, Aubrey has been selling out her own shows in venues all over the US and Europe.   First coming to international attention after winning BOTH the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival Jury and Audience-Choice awards, Aubrey has gone on to perform with Pharrell Williams, Seth McFarlane, Meghan Trainor, Josh Groban, Gerald Albright, Haley Reinhart, and countless other legends. Her appearances on Jimmy Kimmel and The Grammy Awards and a PBS special and London Live have kept her in the public eye and millions of fans have watched her head-spinning videos on YouTube and Facebook.  It seems like everywhere you turn, you’re bumping into Aubrey Logan.   She’s now preparing for a US Tour, a European Tour, an Australian Jazz Cruise and the recording of her next album.  So no need to worry….there’s no shortage of “sass” in our immediate future.    Aubrey is a proud Rath Trombone Artist and uses Glenn Cronkhite cases.

"What tempo would you like for this song? Too fast or too slow?" - drummer to singer Musicians like to analyze and complain about the tenuous relationships that they have with other players in the band. However none of those associations compare with the relationships between the vocalist(s) and the rest of the band. There are copious tales and jokes that solidify that point. In this episode we discuss working with singers and welcome back, power listener and previous guest, Dave Johnstone. Dave stopped in Atlanta on his way to Augusta to play with the dynamic vocalists (and trombonist) Aubrey Logan. After catching up for a bit we tackle this topic by acknowledging that not only do we occasionally have to learn 'singer speak' but sometimes have to depend on our instincts and musical depth to allow us read into what singers are telling us. Occasionally we get lucky. The lords of travel reveal themselves favorable and a guest we've been wanting to speak with drops into our lap. This week we welcome long time listener, friend of the show, and incredibly talented drummer, Dave Johnstone. Dave was recently in town during a string of dates with Post Modern Jukebox sensation, Aubrey Logan. We were able to sit down with him at his hotel for a discussion about everything music. After Dave and Jon reminisce about their time in St. Louis we find out about his formative years and studies with Midwest teaching legend, Kevin Gianino. He talks about the defining moment of his lessons along with the different methods and concepts that Gianino used. We then move into his time in Boston at the Berklee College of Music. After talking about the enrollment process, audition recordings, and scholarships he received Dave discusses his private studies with Kenwood Dennard and Jon Hazilla. Dave also talks about the value of his music academic classes and performing in the many different ensembles in Berklee's catalog. During his time at Berklee Dave had the chance to attend the International Association of jazz Educators conference (now JEN) in Southern California which ultimately led him to relocating to where he now lives. Johnstone has firmly established himself as one of the first call players in the competitive LA scene. Aside from maintaining his regular gigs Dave also keeps a vibrant teaching schedule. We finish up by talking about his touring schedule with Aubrey Logan. We go through a typical day on the road and what his plans for the future entail. Then, quite expectedly, Dave runs through the gauntlet with the DWG Rorschach Test! Nester brings back the art of music-making in original songs chronicling her trials and letdowns with the state of music business today and her bout with cancer as a teenager. A life of trial and triumph has shaped her unique sound filled with messages of love, faith, positivity, and healing while channeling the retro soul artists of the 60’s and 70’s. Her resume includes 12 albums, countless jingles, and over 25 theatrical productions, as well as working with established musicians such as Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Fifth Dimension, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
