There were 15 yr. olds doing backgrounds for me,” says Johnnie. He performed in various talent competitions and was recognized in Durham for his ability to entertain a crowd. During High School, he became a member of John P. Kee's Revelational Experience Choir when he developed a skill for writing lyrics. •He later moved to Los Angeles, CA. to further his career.  While in Los Angeles, he became a member of the group IZ and recorded and released his first single, Da Bomb, on an independent label.  This was also when he did his first studio “sessions for hire,” getting a chance to work with and learn from Marvin Gaye's producer, Harvey Fuguay.  Since leaving L.A., Johnnie has had several songs published, released, and distributed by companies such as CBS, CEI Gospel and Scotty Brothers Records as a lyricist and arranger. He has also performed backgrounds for Dorothy Norwood and shared the stage with such artists as Luther Barnes, Cynthia Jones, Detrick Haddon, Vickie Winans, John P. Surviving Fundamentalism
Just That Kind of Friend! A Conversation on Love, Loneliness, Friendship, and Autism

Surviving Fundamentalism

In 1999, I heard the legendary gospel queen, Vickie Winans say, "...Good God, a friend when you're friendless" in her rendition of "Long As I Got King Jesus", and I have come to accept that this is the god that I met on the floor of my bedroom who was a friend to this friendless, queer kid when no one else would be. Growing up with undiagnosed ADHD and Autism, I struggled with establishing and maintaining friendships, which often meant that I was isolated and alone. I spent a lot of time alone as a child, and ultimately my whispered prayers became full conversations about who I was, how I was showing up in the world, and how I could “improve” to be acceptable and likeable to everyone including god. I often failed at that mission, but each time I learned more and more that this deity that I came to trust with all of me did not see me the way others did. In this episode, I discuss the importance of reading the Tanakh (the Jewish Scriptures) in its original context and coming to understand the humanity of the characters within the text. This will undoubtedly free you from fundamentalism and biblical literalism. I also have an emotional conversation about how my friendship with the Divine saved my life and made me feel an extraordinary love that only a being who is full of integrity, true justice, kindness, grace, and love could ever make me feel. I also discuss how the egomaniacal, insecure, jealous, emotionally unstable, unkind concept of god that was eagerly introduced to me in Christian fundamentalism. In this installment of the Detroit Worldwide Podcast, Marquis connects with Grammy-nominated, international recording artist and producer, Brandon Williams about his development as a  musician and the inspiration behind his latest album, "The Love Factor".    Brandon also discusses what it means to be an independent artist in the recording industry and how looking within helped him to define his sound as a multi-instrumentalist and producer.    About Brandon:   Brandon Williams is a multi-instrumentalist, artist, and Grammy-nominated producer. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, his love for music was cultivated at early age after learning to play several instruments during his formative years in the city. Under the tutelage and mentorship of Grammy and Billboard super producer, Michael J. Powell (Anita Baker), he has honed skills as an engineer and arranger becoming a "go-to guy"  for artists in a variety of genres.  As a musician and producer he has worked alongside and  has lent his hand to many artists including Pharoahe Monch, Bobby Creekwater, Jadakiss, Dr. Dre, Jazmine Sullivan, Foley (Miles Davis), Alchemist, Xzibit, Lin Rountree, Barrett Strong, Jay Electronica, Leon Ware,  Eminem and countless others.  In 2009, he collaborated with Vickie Winans on “How I Got Over”. The album earned him nine Stellar Awards nominations (winning one), a Grammy Award nomination, and a NAACP Image Award. In 2014 he released his full-length debut album titled XII which featured a variety of artists including Robert Glasper, Jesse Boykins III, Alex Isley, and Pharoahe Monch. The follow up to his debut album XII is a continued homage to the “producer album” a’la Quincy Jones, and features noteworthy collaborations from emerging and enduring artists like Alex Isley, Brian McKnight Jr., and Eric Roberson.  The Love Factor was released on September 13, 2019 and debuted on iTunes R&B charts at number 7 before ending the weekend at the number one spot. The album's warm reception is due in large part to the success of The Love Factor’s 2nd single “Don’t Give Up On Love” a collaboration between Williams and Eric Roberson that has been a long time in the making.   Connect with Brandon: Website: www.bwilliamsmusic.com Facebook:  Brandon Williams  Instagram:  @bwilliamsmusic Twitter: @bwilliamsmusic Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/bwilliamsmusic

With parents active in ministry, her father a bishop and mother a missionary and teacher, the Word of God was planted in her heart at an early age. Jenise began singing on the children's choir at the tender age of 2 and at the age of 11 she began writing her own songs. From the wise advice of her father, Jenise continued writing, acquired a vocal coach who helped her hone her craft and was given several opened doors to minister through song.In 2007, Jenise joined forces with Rahim Beyah of Czar Entertainment producing a 3-song demo, which was released locally. In 2009, she competed in the 1st annual Gospel Star Search at the Greater Refuge Temple Church of Out Lord Jesus Christ (COOLJC), where she came in second place. In December of 2010 Jenise toured Europe with J. David Bratton and the New York State Mass Choir. After being given the opportunity to see the world, the fire began to burn again with excitement in Jenise's heart to produce her own music."This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come (2 Timothy 3:1)." Aren't they here? With a dire thirst for ministry and evangelism in music, Jenise La Vonne sets the tone for a new era. Blending the sounds of Contemporary Gospel and Contemporary Christian music all while being rooted in the traditional Gospel message, Jenise La Vonne's sound and mission for her music is undeniably EVANGELISTIC; for it seeks to minister to the soul. She’sfervent in her delivery, a singer navigating the deceptively complex demands of a gospel song. The innocence that“The Wonder of You” exudes will likely appeal most to the youth and young adult demographic.Lybra BoydReview:There's something about Jenise La Vonne that makes her message instantly believable. Maybe it's that she conveys the lyrics of her single "Do What Jesus Says" with a not-often-used combination of gentle earnest. Perhaps it's because she sings as if the lyrics are a part of her lived experience. Whatever the likely reason, when Jenise ascends to the uppers of her alto register to reiterate, "I'll only do what, I'll only do what, I'll only do what Jesus says," you get that she means it.It's just that simple. And nearly as simple is the accompaniment, notably the barely audible strings underneath the moreprominent acoustic guitar (and its periodic fret noise). Occasionally, Jenise backs herself like a reassuring voice of wisdom in the unhurried, introspective ballad.

Growing up in a small 3 bedroom house in Raleigh, North Carolina; Al Chauncy experienced what it was like to live in a lower income neighborhood called Apollo Heights. With three brothers in one room and one boxed floor television in the living room, he had to become more creative. Being the Son of a Rock & Roll/Jazz trained Pianist, Al Chauncy's musical prowess begun at the early age 11; penning his first song to the Maxi single instrumental of Ice - T “Original Gangster”. Being involved around church since his early childhood, Al Chauncy learned three part harmonies and vocal arrangements from singing in  The Gospel Music Workshop of America(Ricky Dilliard, Vickie Winans, James Moore), and the MLK All Childrens choir. His story telling style is heavily influence by The Notorious BIG and his love for storylines in films. At the age of 16 he joined a super rap group Bloodline which comprised of 6 members who sung and rapped; they were compared to The Fugees and even got a chance to work with the Fugees producer/engineer Joe “The butcher” Nicolo in Philadelphia. In the midst of the few lucrative deals Bloodline had on the table, the group disbanded due to creative differences. After the big group break up Al Chauncy continued his musical dream and became a state wide figure in the Carolina music scene. He was nominated for Best  Artist in the 2009 North Carolina Underground Music Awards and also recieved the moniker as The Carolina Mayor from his fans.
