We're going where the sun shines brightly,We're going where the sea is blue…1986 really was very Cliff. He had celebrated his first No1 of the 80s with the cast of The Young Ones, featured in some devastating billboard action in the (rerun) finale of the aforementioned BBC comedy show, been covered by the TVam rat and gerbil, and even had one of his most famous songs feature on a rather unique (and quite frankly ghastly) novelty Euro hit. And in July of the very same year, this very prominent track (it's Summer Holiday folks!), Cliff's ubiquitous seasonal anthem to double decker buses and Una Stubbs, was sitting proudly as track 1 side 2 on the latest NOW, That's What I Call Music album. But wait! The gloriously designed blue sky and beach umbrella that housed the latest variously compiled pop selection was not to feature such 1986 chart toppers as Wham!, Dr and the Medics and Chris De Burgh(!). This wasn't the impending 7th volume of the (rapidly becoming) world famous series of compilations, this was NOW - The Summer Album, and it was…well, different.Just as the wonderful team had done in November 1985 with NOW - The Christmas Album, here was the brand's second venture into a ‘theme'. And what a theme it was! Four decades of summer anthems, summer hits, sizzling memories - phew what a scorcher! But as it transpires, with guest Tim Worthington, we discover that the album announced from the pages of Smash Hits in July 1986 (featuring the most summery of acts, The Jesus and Mary Chain!) was much more than that just sun loungers and factor 30. Because growing up in the 70s/80s in the UK summer was often quite different indeed! What NOW - The Summer Album perhaps did do, was provide a template of summers we all wished we'd known; a sixties summer of love, a fifties summer of rock n roll, a seventies summer of…cricket (?) and of course an eighties summer of Radio One roadshows, and quite probably, traffic jams.It was an album that also provided a range of genres, new bands from the past to discover and a template for all summer soundtracks to come. So, dive back into an iconic chapter in the NOW series. Find out how some VERY big pop names appeared (TWICE!), why sound effects always make summer songs better, how some songs were longer (and shorter!) than others and why John Menzies probably didn't anticipate how well this summer set would sell. And importantly, remember your Plymouth dealer is, indeed, a dealing man. It was a legendary series and a character which Jon Pertwee made his own.Worzel Gummidge was loved by a generation of kids (and adults) in the late 70s and early 80s - and here we meet Jeremy Austin who played John - one of Worzel's little friends.John takes us back nearly half a century to the magical world he inhabited as a child for several summers with his co-star Charlotte Coleman (who played Sue) Playing brother and sister, they got to work with some of the biggest stars of TV and film.Jerry tells Ashley about Jon Pertwee's perfectionism, about the chemistry he had with Una Stubbs who played Aunt Sally - and he teaches us some Worzeleze along the way.We hear how the series only ended because Southern Television came to an end - and Jerry and Ashley give us their verdict on the BBC's recent re-incarnation of the classic character.Produced and Presented Ashley Byrne. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on February 19th 2023 This week we welcome back PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself, from THE SHY LIFE PODCAST and we're going to talk about, in a magic roundabout sort of a way, our various memories of, or reactions to, the children's television that we used to watch when we were growing up. This idea was mostly prompted by two things really; First there was the range of single episodes dating from what many people consider to be a “Golden Age” of children's television that were put out on BBC4 last year as part of the BBC's Centenary celebrations, which gave modern viewers a rare chance to see the likes of THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT, VISION ON, and RENTAGHOST on their televisions for the first time in what seems like an absolute age. Not that our conversation is exclusively restricted to the BBC's output however, because the other prompt for us to have this conversation was the imminent release of the rediscovered masters of Southern Television's classic series WORZEL GUMMIDGE which featured JON PERTWEE, UNA STUBBS and GEOFFREY BAYLDON, which has now been lovingly remastered for a brand new high-definition Blu-Ray set. So, over the course of this hour we mention that, alongside shows like BLUE PETER and the various SATURDAY MORNING options that we were given to view back in the day, and talk about the sort of television that most appealed to us when we were both knee-high to various grasshoppers and hadn't yet graduated to full control rights for the household remote control box. It's a bit of an amiable ramble down memory lane, really, so don't expect any massive insights, or production details, or anything like that, but I do hope you enjoy travelling along those pathways with us. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
This week we revisit a 1970s British kids' show about a scarecrow that comes to life and scares the daylights out of some kids. Join us for Worzel Gummidge

The best actress to ever play Mrs Hudson has passed away.
In 1962 the USA and USSR engaged in one of the most terrifying acts of brinksmanship the world has seen. But few people know of the role played by an ordinary British businessman in bringing the Cuban Missile Crisis to an end. New film The Courier, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, tells the true story of Greville Wynne, recruited by MI6 to penetrate the Soviet nuclear programme. Director Dominic Cooke talks to Tom about creating this Cold War spy thriller. Deceit is a new four-part drama on Channel 4 documenting the investigation launched by the police in the wake of the Rachel Nickell murder on Wimbledon Common in 1992. It stars Niamh Algar as an undercover officer who tried to reel in the man the police believed was guilty, Colin Stagg. The writer and creator, Emilia di Girolamo, joins Front Row to talk about sexism, classism and how access to hours of original interview recordings helped her craft the script. Lily Allen is making her West End debut in 2.22 A Ghost Story, in which she plays Jenny, a mother convinced a ghost is haunting her baby daughter's room. But her cocky husband, Sam, is resolute in his refusal to believe her. An old friend of Sam's and her far less dismissive boyfriend come to dinner. They drink – encountering a lot of spirits there - and debate, until 2.22 in the morning, the hour when, Jenny says, the ghost walks. The play is by Danny Robins, creator of the hit podcast The Battersea Poltergeist. Susannah Clapp, reviews the show and she and Tom Sutcliffe discuss the way ghosts are manifest in plays. And actress Una Stubbs has died aged 84. Matthew Sweet pays tribute to a career which spanned six decades from Rita in Til Death Do Us Part to Mrs Hudson in Sherlock Presenter: Tom Sutcliffe Producer: Hilary Dunn
Worzel Gummidge is back this Christmas with a remake of the classic books by Barbara Euphan Todd. Vicki Pepperdine - star of ‘Getting On’ and podcast ‘Dear Joan and Jericha’ - plays the fairground doll Aunt Sally. But this is a very different character from the rosy-cheeked femme fatale made famous by Una Stubbs. How has the story been updated for the modern day? What’s it like to spend hours having your head wrapped in latex? And what’s the attraction to playing female roles that defy expectation? For the first time, five major beauty pageants - Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss America, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA - have been won by black women. People around the world have seen this as a milestone in representation. But are beauty pageants still relevant and necessary in 2019? And can these competitions be feminist? Salma Haidrani is a journalist who documented her experiences as a contestant in Miss England’s 2018 heats. Tanya Gold is a journalist at the Guardian. Leanne Levers is a political scientist. There are currently six women being discussed as a future Labour leader: Jess Phillips, Lisa Nandy, Emily Thornberry, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Angela Rayner and Yvette Cooper. How likely is it that the Labour Party will select a woman? And what do Labour’s women voters want from the party’s next leader – both those who voted for them this time – and, those who cast their vote elsewhere? When will people realise no-one in business is there to do you a favour....they are after your money EVERY TIME.....we are constantly being warned against scams yet some still divulge their bank account details and get cleaned out....I appreciate a lot of older folk are not computer literate but they should be strongly advised by the media to delete any Emails involving any of your personal details....we are getting ripped off all the time....I was listening to a loan company advertising on the radio prattling on about how they could solve your financial problems....you would think they are doing you a FAVOUR....what you borrow will cost you 50% more to pay back ...some favour!!....if you can't afford it forget it............and the old favourite "We have £10,000 waiting to be paid into your bank....send us the details of your account so we can deposit it".....and because they don't realise you get nothing for nothing they fall for it...and it's goodbye savings......it's a sad situation but not enough time is given to educating the public...the media seem to think baking cakes is more important. 2.Even legal advertising is designed to kid you....I saw an advert for some face cream in Boots the Chemist...."Clinically proved to reduce your wrinkles by up to 5 years"....first off where is the clinic? and secondly "up to" can mean anything....ONE DAY is "up to 5 years"......and then we have "Cruises from £499.99"....this is designed to make initially think you are getting a cruise for £400 instead of one penny short of £500....and "from" means for £499.99 your cabin is probably in the engine laughable. 3.When I worked in Trading Standards I came across some classic legal scams........one being the receipt of a letter telling you that you have DEFINITELY won one of the listed prizes in the letter (even though you have never entered a competition}....the prizes would range from an expensive car and/or a big sum of cash to,for example,a holiday for two.....the latter would involve a returnable deposit AFTER you have been on the holiday.....this is the one you will have won and when you have paid the deposit you find out that it's a coach trip from Glasgow to Morocco which you are never going to go on....goodbye deposit............another was the indoor TV aerial shaped like a satellite dish "You can have one in every room...and you don't pay satellite fees because you are not receiving satellite programmes.....£15".....everyone rushed out and bought one (or two) thinking that they would get satellite from this ordinary indoor aerial (worth around £5)l....despite what it said in the ad....clever stuff............but the best one was a firm which offered hard porn videos for £10 "while stocks last".....cheques made out to SPC LTD........they had a few in stock and when they had gone they would send the buyer their personal cheque for the refund....the personal cheque included their full name "Sexual Perverts Club"......needless to say not many of the cheques were cashed....genius. 4.On the news front apparently there are too many "white saviours" involved in Red Nose Day....which has raised a billion pounds for overseas charities over the years...this is according to MP David Lammy.....who is black..............TV presenter Stacey Doyle has come under fire from him for publishing her charity work in Africa apparently showing how only "white people" are seen showing where our donations go in Africa.....Lenny Henry has come out in total support of Stacey Dooley so at least some sense is being shown.... Mr.Lammy is probably quite happy to get the publicity as I'd never heard of him until now.....and I wonder how much of his nice salary he donates to the cause?.....perhaps he could supply all these poor kids in Africa with a nice expensive suit each....like the one he was wearing........obviously some of us need to apologise for being white.....not that we can do much about it. 5.On a lighter note the song this week is about a lady who everybody loves....Una Stubbs.....she is the eternal schoolgirl and I have been a fan since the early sixties when she first appeared on a milk advert......I wrote this song in the 70's and got a publishing deal with a major label...which sadly never materialised....so I sent the song to her....to my surprise she rang me up and told me how flattered she was...she was as sweet as you would expect.......I put the song on YouTube and it has had thousands of hits so obviously everyone agrees with me....so here it is The Ballad of Una Stubbs....available from my website.

RHLSTP #100: Richard Bacon - A Series of Apologies. It's the 100th Leicester Square Theatre Podcast and the last in this series, so we've flown a special guest in all the way from America at the licence fee payer's expense, it's Blue Peter's bad boy, Richard Bacon. And in typical fashion he turns up at the theatre having been out all night celebrating his imminent 40th birthday. Where does he get his energy from?... oh right. Find out about how he once cried salty tears on to Mansfield McDonald's salty gherkins, how he became Top Of The Pop's most notorious ever presenter by accidentally calling some people fat, why he has been banned from the state opening of parliament, how he took a forgetful plate-spinner to Las Vegas, what he knows about the Tales of Robin Hood, what part of his anatomy (other than his mouth and nose) he can breathe out of, and why this gives him another kinship with Herring on top of his Dicky first name and food-based surname. Plus what he REALLY thinks of Una Stubbs (he thinks she's nice). And he gives himself something else to apologise for in a lifetime of apology. He's a very entertaining and lovely idiot, but as you'll see, it's all down to genetics. Hard to believe his one attempt at stand up-ended so badly. If you think these 100 podcasts have been worth 1p each, why not donate a pound here: rhlstp.co.uk. Feel free to give more if you like or to donate monthly. Got a call from a guy who works on The One Show asking if they could use a small section of my YouTube song about Una Stubbs….as she was a guest on the show…I naturally agreed and they used a small section of the chorus when she was introduced….was somewhat hidden by the applause for her but hey nice one eh? I wrote this song many years ago and actually got a record deal from a major record company….which didn’t materialise so I recently re-recorded it and put it on YouTube and on one of my quirky albums…I also sent her a copy and she phoned me up and thanked me…a national treasure indeed… I have been watching repeats of the original Hi-De-Hi series and can’t believe how good it was…it’s hilarious….the wonderful cast and classic scripts…absolutely brilliant…unlike “Benidorm” which has totally lost it’s way…thank goodness it’s finished…a 5 year old could write a better script…and by co-incidence Ruth Madoc was in the last episode…talk about one extreme to the other…let’s hope that’s the last we see of it…total waste of air time. I had to smile at the news of the daughter of the Korean Airline boss stopping the plane because she didn’t like the way they served the nuts….I think she is one herself….she made the pilot back up and told the purser to get off the plane…she’s now in jail under the anti terrorist laws…you couldn’t write this…they should have included it in Benidorm….might have got a laugh for a change. There was a slight slip up on the tele recently….it involved a scam which set up Bradley Walsh…the idea was to book him for a talk and secretly set him up…the guy said Bradley wasn’t too happy as he thought he was going to get 10 grand….TEN GRAND!!!...for a TALK!!!!....Bradley Walsh!!!...this is the problem these days…anyone who pays out that sort of money wants a reality check…it’s scandalous….I remember back in the day we put a charity show on at a local theatre for sick kids…the top of the bill let us down so we rang up a well known comic….who agreed to step in….(as he obviously had nothing else on with the very short notice)…all the groups and dancers did it for nothing…this guy…who gave a third rate 30 minutes…wanted 1500 quid…personally I wouldn’t have paid him 15 pence….greedy greedy. There’s a big hoohah at the moment concerning the Chelsea fans who kept stopping this black guy from getting on the train in Paris….of course the press are straight in…it’s RACISM…and the guy has come up with the usual ”It’s because I’m black…etc”……
Ah, the ever patient housekeeper of Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. Mrs. Hudson has had to deal with these two for many years and its's about time she as appreciate for the superhero she was! From the original canonical Mrs. Hudson to Una Stubbs and Elementary's transgender Mrs. Hudson, we gush about our favorite housekeeper. Music: Nothing Broken by Kevin MacLeod
The song I have sent you this week is about everyone’s favourite lady Una Stubbs…...she said she was delighted with the song and THANKED me for the compliment…. After the recent Liverpool Everton Derby game a pal of mine told me that as the fans walked past his house there was an Everton supporter ..it’s a FOOTBALL MATCH…that’s all…but to some morons it’s warfare…........ There has been a lot of publicity surrounding “Trolling”… I recently watched John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) on morning TV... The BBC have recently been spending our licence fees on making serious attempts to promote classical music to the masses........
