“The Greatest Cats in Pop Culture” is our conversation about the feline fictional characters that impacted our lives. The cat has always been a mysterious, charismatic, enigmatic presence in the lives of humans. Earning the love of the small ones or running from the big ones seems to be baked into our DNA. Aslan, Mufasa, Shere Khan, Hobbes, Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, there's just a bunch of great cat characters. This conversation is silly and by no means comprehensive. Notable omissions, Garfield because he sucks, Heathcliff because our riff about him sucked and I cut it out, and Battlecat because…we forgot. He rocks and that's our bad. He also forgot MC Skat Kat from Paula Abdul's hit “Opposites Attract.” But you don't come to us for dry ass lists of every damn thing you come to us for wit and inventive opinions. This episode was like herding cats and we got some interesting ones back to the ranch pardner. So press play! Follow us! Just another day in the life of Edda & Amos Van Hoesen, when a simple trip to the pool ends up with Edda hanging by a thread. A rope? A wire? Look, we don't know. She jumps off a diving board with SOMETHING attached to her bikini bottom and she ends up hanging there for about a week's worth of comics. Amos speculates that it has to do with government surveillance, that someone planted a bug in her bikini bottom. We are not making this up. This is what he says. And so we spend all week on this topic. Sure, sure, there's a brief moment where Amos gets a boner. BECAUSE OF COURSE HE DOES! But does he ever make even the slightest attempt to help Edda down? OF COURSE NOT. He just continues to stare at her like a big dumb idiot. The biggest surprise is that he wasn't just making a goofy "joke" about her bikini being under surveillance. Nope, that's really what's happening. A government agency has put a bug in Edda's bikini bottom, and there's a (roughly) 200-foot cord attached that she somehow didn't notice. For reals. Yeah. We know. It's...it's something. (Part 1 of 2) The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: The bugged bikini saga begins here (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1576595853673832448?s=20&t=r3lAQcIqizXOr62cIAdjLg). Since our hosts have seen three Disney movies called "The Jungle Book" let's start by clarifying that yes, this is a theatrically released sequel to the 1967 animated classic, made thirty-six years after the original. And much like the other animated sequels of this era, it's basically the same movie all over again in reverse. Quite literally, this is the story of Mowgli returning to the jungle and singing The Bare Necessities ad nauseum before a confrontation with the blood-thirsty Shere Khan. It's a bold-faced cash grab more than it is a movie, but at least it provokes some interesting discussion from our hosts as to how far (or not far) the company has come.
The Jungle Book is a 2016 American adventure drama film directed and produced by Jon Favreau, written by Justin Marks and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Based on Rudyard Kipling's eponymous collective works, the film is a live-action/CGI remake of Walt Disney's 1967 animated film of the same name.[1][6] Neel Sethi plays Mowgli, an orphaned human boy who, guided by his animal guardians, sets out on a journey of self-discovery while evading the threatening Shere Khan. The film includes voice and motion capture performances from Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong'o, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito, and Christopher Walken. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tradepaperbacks/message --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rangerryan/message

Walt dies in this one, so the history section is long and complicated because Walt was extremely petty and couldn't help screwing people over (both family and employees), even until his final breath. Walt's brother wasn't much better, he just decided to commit tax fraud primarily. Alex and Terra discuss if tickets sold or money made is the best way to judge the popularity of movies. Terra gives a very brief overview of Rudyard Kipling, one of our guests asks if there are wolves in India, and Alex remarks upon the obvious whiteness of all the voice actors and explains imperialism. Our hosts welcome the return of their dear friend, the cultural content warning, and dig into what that could POSSIBLY be in reference to throughout this movie set in the jungles of India. Terra doesn't necessarily ship Baloo and Bagheera, they just are getting major divorced dad vibes from this relationship. Our hosts argue about the ending and if it makes any logical sense at all (it doesn't, Terra is correct, don't listen to Alex). Terra praises Baloo's character animation, then Alex says she thinks the movie looks good, a statement that catches Terra off guard and prompts a discussion of the ways this movie could look even better. Terra praises Shere Khan's vibes and Alex highlights how little of a threat he actually is, which undercuts the stakes of the film writ large. Ultimately, The Beatles would have made this movie better if they were here. Originally recorded Jan 2022. The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling audiobook. This classic children's book by Rudyard Kipling tells the story of Mowgli, a young boy raised by wolves: his escapades and adventures with his dear friends Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear, his capture by the Monkey-People, his attempt at reintegration into human society, and his ultimate triumph over the lame tiger Shere Khan. The account of Mowgli's adventures is followed by several short stories, including the tales of the brave white seal, Kotick, and the tenacious mongoose, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. Packed with adventure and Jungle Law wisdom, this book has pervaded popular culture as the basis of many film and stage adaptations, including the popular Disney movie, and through its adoption as a motivational book by the Cub Scouts.

“I want to go see him!” Jamie wailed through her gut wrenching sobs. Gale had just texted the Winstar, the 18 year old bobcat that Jamie had nursed from a few day old, had died. Windstar Bobcat was netted to see vet after being found "down" in his den. He seemed fine the day before, but when he didn't come out to eat, Jamie knew something was wrong. We netted him to take him in the hospital and called the vet. We found vomited mushrooms, but both varieties turned out to be non toxic. A large mass was found on his kidney and biopsied. It was sent out, along with blood work for testing. Watching over him through the night on a Nest cam, Jamie reported that he was awake and looking around at 5 am, so she felt he was out of the woods. About a half hour later though he passed peacefully in his sleep. A necropsy will be done to determine the cause of death. He was 18 which was old for a bobcat and extremely old for a hybrid. His brother died almost immediately after birth so every year Windstar had was a gift to us all. http://bigcatrescue.org/Windstar I am thankful that we have the tools and knowledge to assist our cats through their old age. I am grateful that we are nearing the end of these horrible losses. The last of the cats I was most close to, because they required so much intensive care when they were young were Windsong, Catera, Raindance, Hercules, Shere Khan and Little Feather. They are all gone now. I love the others and have spent many nights on the bedside floor by Bailey and others, but I feel like the worst is over for me. Jamie still has to look with dread toward the days of losing Jumanji, Pharaoh, Tonga, Will, Moses and Anasazi. They are all in their late teens now, so the heart breaks will end soon for her too. Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet. For the month of November, we're talking about movies we are grateful for! In this episode we discuss five adaptations of "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling. We don't want to play favorites or anything...but go watch "Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle" on Netflix RIGHT FREAKING NOW! Next we want to see what happens when Joe Exotic meets Shere Khan.
We'll do a plumbing project with Mickey Mouse in the Sorcerer's Apprentice, update our homeowners insurance policy with Home Alone, and check the news, where Shere Khan has signed on with the Forest Service as the voice of new fire prevention campaign. We'll also check all of your best Fairy Tale Typos, from "Little Miss Mullet" to "Jack Splat" to "Snow White and the Seven Doors" (featuring Snow's marathon run on Let's Make a Deal). Finally, Andrew Mitchell is back to fire up Rapunzel's Jukebox, bringing us back to the 90's with a Sawyer Brown song revisited as "Some Belles Do."
You'll be as sorry as we were that this story is coming to its end, but ah, what a finish it is! A tale of friendship, of danger, and of the many adventures found in Rudyard Kipling's lush and viperous jungle, comes to a close but not without a lot of help from Mowgli's friends and a satisfying conclusion indeed.
From The Jungle Book we stumble across Baloo and Mowgli being stalked by Shere Khan through the jungle. Check out how King Louie and his crazy band of monkeys help them escape.

The Jungle Book - Rudyard Kipling - Book 1 Title: The Jungle Book Overview: The Jungle Book (1894) is a collection of stories by the English author Rudyard Kipling. Most of the characters are animals such as Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear, though a principal character is the boy or "man-cub" Mowgli, who is raised in the jungle by wolves. The stories are set in a forest in India; one place mentioned repeatedly is "Seonee" (Seoni), in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. A major theme in the book is abandonment followed by fostering, as in the life of Mowgli, echoing Kipling's own childhood. The theme is echoed in the triumph of protagonists including Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and The White Seal over their enemies, as well as Mowgli's. Another important theme is of law and freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior, still less about the Darwinian struggle for survival, but about human archetypes in animal form. They teach respect for authority, obedience, and knowing one's place in society with "the law of the jungle", but the stories also illustrate the freedom to move between different worlds, such as when Mowgli moves between the jungle and the village. Critics have also noted the essential wildness and lawless energies in the stories, reflecting the irresponsible side of human nature. The Jungle Book has remained popular, partly through its many adaptations for film and other media. Critics such as Swati Singh have noted that even critics wary of Kipling for his supposed imperialism have admired the power of his storytelling. The book has been influential in the scout movement, whose founder, Robert Baden-Powell, was a friend of Kipling's. Percy Grainger composed his Jungle Book Cycle around quotations from the book. Talking to Kids about Death and Loss (0:00:00) Death is a natural part of life, but can be difficult to discuss. Even more difficult when you're trying to have that conversation with a young child. While we want to shield our children from serious grief and pain, we aren't always able to. Sometimes we have to have the hard talk with children sooner than we had hoped. We're welcoming Audrey Penn on the show. Audrey is an award-winning author of several children's books, including The Kissing Hand, her best seller that helps kids discuss death and grief. Today we'll be discussing why this concept is so important and how we can have those difficult conversations with our children. What is Long COVID? (0:19:40) If you have a cough or fever, you're probably worried you have COVID. And if you do, the good news is that with a 98%recovery rate, you'll probably feel better soon. But some that have recovered unfortunately are still experiencing symptoms, making it tough to go back to their normal life. An international group of researchers have discovered that COVID symptoms might remain prevalent for a while after you recover. Here to tell us more about it and how we can protect ourselves is the lead of the US group, Dr. Andrew Chan. How the Law Protects Wild Animals (0:37:33) Going to the zoo is one of the most magical things you can do as a kid—it's like seeing all your bedtime stories come to life before your eyes. Rudyard Kipling's Shere Khan (the tiger from The Junglebook), the bears from Goldilocks, and Curious George all in one place. However, not all zoos are created equal and as we age the glamour of zoos begins to wear thin. We start to wonder about the treatment of the animals and the conditions of their containment. We ask ourselves, how ethical are zoos really? Hereto answer these questions and to talk with us about the laws regulating zoos is Dr. Liz Tyson, Programs Director of Born Free USA and author of "Licensing Laws and Animal Welfare: The Legal Protection of Wild Animals". Normalizing Mental Health (0:52:45) The pandemic has changed a lot about what “normal” means, and on top of regular day to day stress, chances are your mental health might have taken a hit. In fact, 1 in 5 adults in the US suffer from a mental health issue, and this number looks like it might increase with the pandemic requiring us to stay inside and isolate from others. Even though it's common, it can still be difficult to have conversations surrounding mental health. How can we navigate these conversations, especially in a time like this? Joining us is mental health advocate Darrell Moon. Alex Trebek's Legacy (1:11:22) Just under 2 weeks ago, the beloved host of Jeopardy! Alex Trebek passed away at the age of 80. Doctors diagnosed Trebek with pancreatic cancer at the start of 2019, and while he underwent treatments for a brief respite, he resumed chemotherapy not long after. Trebek was the host of Jeopardy! for 37 years. Since his death, many fans and former contestants of the show have honored his life with kind words and tributes. Joining us today to discuss his legacy and the show is former contestant, Christine Hurt. Weekend Review (1:27:15) Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend, from the new shows coming to streaming services to the New York Times bestseller list to what's going on in your community.

In the fifth episode of season 6 of the 5 Minute Biographies podcast, we take a brief look at the life of the man who gave us Shere Khan, Bagheera and of course the young orphan boy called Mowgli in his Jungle Books, the author Rudyard Kipling.
