Bill Monroe, a local businessman, owes Patrolman Dick Benson ten grand. Has owed the police officer ten grand for nearly two years. Dick wants his dough. And more than wants it, Dick needs it. For his family. For his wife and daughter.Dick's at wit's end on how to collect. On several occasions he has begged and pleaded with Monroe to fork over the cash. All this begging and pleasing to no avail. For months Dick has been hatching a plot in his head. He knows it's a crazy-ass scheme, got desperation written all over it. But hey, a man has to do it what he has to do. He can't be letting people push him around. This is America, after all. A man is entitled to what's his. So, tonight's the night.simpson-books.com

Episode 97 aired June 22, 1944 on CBS Radio. Starring Lucille Ball A woman's purse is stolen then returned with a large amount of money inside.
On the June 22nd, 1944 episode of Suspense: radio's outstanding theater of thrills, Lucille Ball guest-starred as a chorus girl who inexplicably finds ten thousand dollars in her purse after it's been temporarily stolen on the subway. She's not sure what to do about it, and it soon leads to trouble. Ball's character has been set up. In early 1944 between films, Lucy began carving out a second career on the radio. She appeared on Duffy's Tavern, Abbott & Costello, The Screen Guild Theater, and Suspense. Simultaneously, with the biggest war effort in full-swing, Desi was put to the task of organizing entertainment shows for the army, using his and Lucy's influence to snag stars for guest appearances. Word began to circulate about his abilities as a producer. He was soon put in charge of events at the Birmingham Hospital in San Fernando. Lucy threw herself into the fundraising efforts. For more information on Lucille Ball's radio career and how it led to I Love Lucy, tune into Breaking Walls Episode 100: The Radio Career of Lucille Ball (1938-1952). It's available to stream and download for free anywhere you might get a podcast, and at http://thewallbreakers.com/

What needs to be said about William Elliott Whitmore at this point? Over the course of an impressive career that's spanned more than two decades, the folk legend has performed all around the world, shared the stage with an abundance of renowned musicians and released seven outstanding albums. Before he was captivating crowds far and wide with his quality catalog and his incomparable voice, Whitmore was lugging gear for Ten Grand and he — and his trusty banjo — were winning over audiences at punk shows as the band's opening act. Recently, around the time his Dope Walker side project was preparing to release its debut album, My First Band host Tyler Maas was able to get Whitmore away from his family for long enough to run through his extensive and immensely interesting career. Over the course of the conversation, Whitmore discussed being a new dad, isolating on his Iowa farm and ways the pandemic has changed both his tour and album schedules. Along the way, the Midwestern music mainstay talked about inheriting his grandfather's banjo, finding success in a solo capacity, the creative itch projects like Dope Walker and Hallways of Always scratch, and some of the life-changing experiences he's had over the past 20-plus years. Before episode's end, the pair also relive memorable Wisconsin shows at places like Cactus Club and Cranky Pat's, mention mutual friends they have, and talk about Tyler's Green Bay Packers novelty band. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers"), Dope Walker ("These Freaks"), and William Elliott Whitmore ("Dry").

Aaron Mader has made quite a name for himself in the music industry. That name just happens to be "Lazerbeak." Using the moniker, the co-founder and CEO of Doomtree has released an abundance of his own music, produced songs with the likes of Lizzo, P.O.S, Mac Lethal and Dessa and delved into the world of artist management. Long before Mader was a Midwest music mainstay and one of the driving forces of an accomplished creative collective, he was an inexperienced teen in the Minneapolis suburbs who was struggling to get shows for his first band. That band — The Plastic Constellations — wound up lasting 13 years, being signed to French Kiss Records, touring and selling out spacious venues in Minneapolis before he could even legally drink. Along the way, Mader dabbled in beat-making and his Lazerbeak alias was born. The rest is history. Recently, Mader spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas and told him about his impressive indie rock past, the origin and unexpected explosion of Doomtree, and how he stays both active and creatively fulfilled making music in his solo project, Shredders and the brand new Night Stone, and as part of a forthcoming band with William Elliott Whitmore and members of Ten Grand. Over the course of the lengthy and open discussion, Mader also talked about ways the COVID-19 crisis is currently impacting Doomtree and the artists he manages, accidentally sharing a stage name with an obscure Transformers character, his inspiring "little money in lots of places" approach and how Lizzo gave him a six-pack of Mike's Hard Lemonade to make beats for what would eventually become her Lizzobangers album. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Indeed Brewing Company. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers"), The Plastic Constellations ("Let's War") and Night Stone ("Echo Love" featuring Lady Midnight).

Authors on the Air host Pam Stack welcomes Canadian author Seamus Heffernan. As a child, Seamus Heffernan’s parents indulged him far too much in his love of comic books, crime TV and pulp novels, and this is how he has decided to repay them. Prior to his writing career, he worked in education, journalism, marketing and politics, and earned an MA in criminology from the University of the Fraser Valley. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he has called several places home, including a lengthy stint in London, England. He currently resides in British Columbia, where he splits his time between Abbotsford, Mission and Vancouver. His short fiction has previously appeared in The Raspberry and Louden Singletree. His latest release, TEN GRAND, is the second book in the acclaimed Thaddeus Grayle series. About TEN GRAND: A man wears many masks—and they all fit. A year on from the case that nearly cost him his life, private detective Thaddeus Grayle now makes a quiet living through insurance tail-jobs and corporate background checks. Unfortunately for him, a baffling new case with the promise of a big pay-off is proving too tempting to walk away from. A depressed—but very wealthy—City banker has vanished, leaving his family penniless and the police with no answers. It's the perfect case for a PI with little to lose—until Grayle unravels the truth behind the missing man's family and their desperation to find him. Returning once more to London's underworld, including gangster-run gambling dens, a billionaire ex-heroin smuggler and a sociopathic, curry-loving loan shark, Grayle must somehow stay alive long enough to save a man who might not even want to be saved. Night Listeners of 98.9FM KFMG -As you are listening to this I am up in the far northeast corner of Iowa in the town of Lansing. I never thought I could drive 4 hours in one direction from Des Moines as still be in Iowa, well I found the one place that I could. I am here producing Jack Megger's short film, The Burial. Its been nearly four years in the works and we are finally here. Jack is originally from Mason City and has a pile of his own basement tapes that he is giving me to digitize for a future show.Tonight, I have replaced our opening movie sample with a track from The Tape Beatles, tape collage group from Iowa City. They might be replacing Deerslayer as a weekly "must play" on a temporary basis. Their material reminds me a lot of Negativeland or a more commercial version of Aaron Dilloway. I also have a new track from Forest Lonefight's (The Maw) new solo album, Tend to the Soul. From the world of Iowa doom, I have tunes from Son of the Morning, Dead Emperors, and Mr. Nasti (doom pop, but still doom). For all my 319 listeners, I got two tracks from the music world of the late Mathew Davis (Brazil & Ten Grand). Before she was a TV star, and even before she kept audiences smiling with her radio comedy series, Lucille Ball delivered tough noir performances in episodes of Suspense. She was as talented in the world of drama and thrills as she was with slapstick and a punchline. The red-headed legend returns for two more “tales well calculated” – “The Ten Grand” (originally aired on CBS on June 22, 1944) and “A Shroud for Sarah” (originally aired on CBS on October 25, 1945).

Got a call from a guy who works on The One Show asking if they could use a small section of my YouTube song about Una Stubbs….as she was a guest on the show…I naturally agreed and they used a small section of the chorus when she was introduced….was somewhat hidden by the applause for her but hey nice one eh? I wrote this song many years ago and actually got a record deal from a major record company….which didn’t materialise so I recently re-recorded it and put it on YouTube and on one of my quirky albums…I also sent her a copy and she phoned me up and thanked me…a national treasure indeed… I have been watching repeats of the original Hi-De-Hi series and can’t believe how good it was…it’s hilarious….the wonderful cast and classic scripts…absolutely brilliant…unlike “Benidorm” which has totally lost it’s way…thank goodness it’s finished…a 5 year old could write a better script…and by co-incidence Ruth Madoc was in the last episode…talk about one extreme to the other…let’s hope that’s the last we see of it…total waste of air time. I had to smile at the news of the daughter of the Korean Airline boss stopping the plane because she didn’t like the way they served the nuts….I think she is one herself….she made the pilot back up and told the purser to get off the plane…she’s now in jail under the anti terrorist laws…you couldn’t write this…they should have included it in Benidorm….might have got a laugh for a change. There was a slight slip up on the tele recently….it involved a scam which set up Bradley Walsh…the idea was to book him for a talk and secretly set him up…the guy said Bradley wasn’t too happy as he thought he was going to get 10 grand….TEN GRAND!!!...for a TALK!!!!....Bradley Walsh!!!...this is the problem these days…anyone who pays out that sort of money wants a reality check…it’s scandalous….I remember back in the day we put a charity show on at a local theatre for sick kids…the top of the bill let us down so we rang up a well known comic….who agreed to step in….(as he obviously had nothing else on with the very short notice)…all the groups and dancers did it for nothing…this guy…who gave a third rate 30 minutes…wanted 1500 quid…personally I wouldn’t have paid him 15 pence….greedy greedy. There’s a big hoohah at the moment concerning the Chelsea fans who kept stopping this black guy from getting on the train in Paris….of course the press are straight in…it’s RACISM…and the guy has come up with the usual ”It’s because I’m black…etc”……
Dans cet épisode, Éric, Gaylord, Julien, Daniel et Zeph passeront en revue Ten Grand, Death of Wolverine et The Multiversity, ils vous feront découvrir Spider-Man 2099, parleront de l'état actuel d'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. et évoqueront la NYCC !

This week Andy and Derek review two recent graphic novels, James Vance and Dan E. Burr's On the Ropes and Matt Kindt's Red Handed: The Fine Art of Strange Crimes. As the Two Guys with PhDs make abundantly clear, both of these are incredible original works that are sure to end up on the guys' year-end top ten lists. First, Andy and Derek discuss On the Ropes, a follow up to Vance and Burr's original 1988-1989 miniseries, Kings in Disguise (Kitchen Sink Press, and latter published as a graphic novel in 1990). They discuss this earlier work, so as to set a context for the new book, and then go on to explore the ways in which On the Rope builds upon — and in some ways, even surpasses — the narrative reach of Kings in Disguise. If, as many critics have pointed out, Kings in Disguise is one of the seminal American graphic novels, then the latest collaboration between Vance and Burr is indeed a notable occasion. Next, the Two Guys with PhDs turn their attention to Red Handed: The Fine Art of Strange Crimes, one of the most ambitious works they've recently encountered. They discuss in detail the ways in which this book bears the “Matt Kindt stamp,” especially in its use of fragmented storytelling, the themes of crime and intrigue, the intertextual uses Kindt makes of comics history, and the text's metafictional play, where the work itself becomes a blueprint for the way we read comics. As Derek and Andy both point out, Kindt is definitely on an upward trajectory, with each work getting more ambitious and impressive than the previous. The two guys wrap up with a brief summary of other things they are reading, such as 1980s Marvel comics and recent first and second issues from Image, including Sex, Lost Vegas, and Ten Grand. The jury is still out on some of those new titles.
