The hit Broadway production Hamilton, a rap/R&B/jazz infused musical about America's founding fathers is premiering in New Zealand next May. The show will run for two weeks at Auckland's Spark Arena, following a successful run in Australia. Fans of the musical are very excited for this debut, including Victoria University theatre lecturer James Wenley, who saw it live before and look forward to seeing it again. However, he says that running the show in Spark Arena isn't the best choice, as he believes Hamilton doesn't suit the venue. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, Theatre Maker, Trevor Copp encourages us to constantly aim to develop our creative ideas over many years. Trevor shares his own journey on how his pursuit of story telling, creativity and exploring new ideas is always evolving throughout his career and lead one of his most recent explorations has lead to to his new collaboration in turning one of his mime pieces into feature film! At the end of the day, don't be afraid to ask yourself “And now what?” Be willing to let your projects and ideas evolve. Desire, passion, curiosity, and work ethic are more important than talent any time. In this episode: There are parts of the mind that do not distinguish between real and imagined events. Confidence is being willing to hold your hand all the time. The wonderful gift of being untalented is being able to constantly reinvent and rediscover your creativity. For a creator, there is no poverty, space, and opportunity that creativity doesn't have a way to get into it. Trevor founded Tottering Biped Theatre (TBT) in 2009, a professional company emphasizing original, issue driven, and highly physical work. He completed Theatre Studies at Waterloo, a MA at Guelph, and Mime at the Marcel Marceau School in Paris. Malaria is a deadly disease caused by the bite of an infected mosquito. For millennia it has defined human evolution, impacting societies, wars, empires, and our genetic makeup. In the 1800s almost the entire world was endemic for malaria, the disease being one of the greatest causes of infant mortality. Malaria remains endemic to 87 countries with almost 2.8 billion people at risk of infection, mostly in low-income countries and poorly resourced communities. Each year it makes >200 million patients sick and causes >400,000 deaths. In 2007 this unacceptable burden triggered Bill and Melinda Gates to call for the elimination of the disease globally by 2050. In this talk, Professor Ric Price will present some of the key discoveries of the last 100 years, and the modern efforts and hurdles to the control and ultimate elimination of this deadly disease. The lecture will be on Thursday March 17 - University Theatre, Orange Building, Casuarina Campus, 5 - 7pm. Admission is free.

We're celebrating the birthday of Edgar Allan Poe - the master of the macabre and the father of the modern detective story. Poe's super sleuth C. Auguste Dupin and his methods of solving crimes through logic and observation inspired a genre and directly led to the creation of Sherlock Holmes. We'll hear old time radio adaptations of the three Dupin mysteries: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" from The Weird Circle; "The Mystery of Marie Roget" from Suspense (originally aired on CBS on December 14, 1953); and "The Purloined Letter" from The NBC University Theatre (originally aired on NBC on September 17, 1948).
Braham Murray OBE arrived in Manchester in the 1960s as the youngest artistic director in the country, of the travelling Century Theatre, remaining in the city to co-found the 69 Theatre Company which went on to become the Royal Exchange Theatre, still one of the UK’s leading regional theatres. Murray died in 2018 at the age of 75, but BTG editor David Chadderton spoke to him in 2011 when he had just announced that he would leave the theatre he co-founded 35 years earlier. He spoke about working with Century Theatre's travelling auditorium, forming the 69 Theatre Company at the University Theatre (now Contact) and the process of designing the unique Royal Exchange Theatre module, as well as the rebuilding of the theatre after the 1996 IRA bomb. This interview was originally recorded for TheatreVoice in 2011, but we are reissuing it as a tribute to a man who was very influential in helping to turn Manchester into a major theatrical centre.
