Anita Rani discusses the winning books with the Chair of Judges for the Fiction Prize, author Kit de Waal, and Chair of Judges for the Non-Fiction Prize, journalist and author Kavita Puri.Race Across The World reached its finale on BBC One this week, after a nearly 9,000-mile dash across Asia, from the Great Wall in north eastern China to the southernmost tip of India, via the Himalayan peaks of Nepal. Ute Lemper is an internationally celebrated German singer and actress. She first gained international acclaim playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret in Paris, a performance that earned her the Molière Award for Best Newcomer. She went on to star as Velma Kelly in Chicago in both the West End and on Broadway, winning the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical and a Theatre World Award. Her early career also included key roles in Cats in Vienna and Peter Pan and The Blue Angel in Berlin. Ute has become an international cabaret icon, renowned for her interpretations of Kurt Weill, Marlene Dietrich, Édith Piaf, and Astor Piazzolla. She has performed at prestigious venues such as La Scala, Lincoln Center, and the Sydney Opera House. Her recording career includes over 30 albums, with standout projects like Ute Lemper Sings Kurt Weill, Illusions, and Punishing Kiss, featuring songs by Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, and Nick Cave. She was named Billboard's Crossover Artist of the Year in 1993/94. Her film work includes notable roles in L'Autrichienne as Marie Antoinette, Peter Greenaway's Prospero's Books, and Prêt-à-Porter. She also provided the German voice for Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid and Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The German-born, New York-based singer and actress Ute Lemper's career has spanned a century of songs from the worlds of cabaret jazz, avant-garde pop, musical theater, even contemporary classical music. But when she sings the music of Kurt Weill, a much earlier German-born, NY-based artist, she has few equals. So when Carnegie Hall decided to launch its series exploring the music of the Weimar Republic, Ute Lemper had to have a featured role to play. On Friday, Feb. 9, she'll be performing her tribute to Weimar Berlin at Zankel Hall, and she's in the studio to give us a preview of what that'll sound like. German singer and actress Ute Lemper's career defies easy description. She's a musical theater legend – starring in the original Paris production of Cabaret and adorning the sides of NYC buses when she starred in the Broadway run of Chicago. But she's also a singer who has recreated the songs of Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, and Kurt Weill, and sung contemporary songs by Elvis Costello, Nick Cave, and Philip Glass. And in recent years, she's been writing songs as well, taking inspiration from Hiatus Kaiyote, John Legend, Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, Annie Lennox, Erykah Badu and/or Robert Glasper. Mit Ute Lemper spreche ich ganz unaufgeregt über ihr neues Buch "Die Zeitreisende" - ein Werk, in dem sie ihrem jüngeren Ich begegnet. Und immer wieder begegnet Ute Lemper der Geschichte unserer Gesellschaft - sei es der zweite Weltkrieg und die Judenverfolgung oder die Anschläge vom 11. September 2001. Ihre menschliche Erschütterung darüber, ist der Antrieb sich mit der Historie auseinanderzusetzen. Am Ende wurde mir klar, ihre Natürlichkeit und das Pure, das sie verkörpert, machen sie zum Weltstar.

Prejšnjo sredo se je v Ljubljani začel poletni orkestrski kamp, ki ga organizirajo pri Slovenskem mladinskem orkestru pod vodstvom dirigentke Žive Ploj Peršuh. Letos se ga je udeležilo 96 mladih glasbenikov, starih od 12 do 22 let, iz vse Slovenije, pridružilo pa se jim je tudi nekaj glasbenikov iz Ukrajine, ki so lani našli zatočišče v Sloveniji. V slabem tednu so mladi glasbeniki naštudirali skladbe iz različnih kabaretov in muzikalov, jutri pa bodo skupaj z nemško šansonjerko Ute Lemper nastopili na odru ljubljanskih Križank. To je bil za marsikoga tudi razlog, da se je udeležil poletnega orkestrskega kampa. Trema ali ne, jutri bo šlo zares.
