We are back to Vicksburg National Military Park for numerous tours throughout the battlefield. Our first stop is the Stockade Redan with Garry Adelman, Dr. Chris Mackowski and Kris White. This assault was named "The Forlorn Hope" by William T. Sherman. “A forlorn hope,” associated with the Civil War according to one Wikipedia entry, “is a band of soldiers or other combatants chosen to take the vanguard in a military operation, such as a suicidal assault through the kill zone of a defended position, where the risk of casualties is high.”

When we last left our fateful crew, they found themselves in the midst of a great salt desert. With supplies and water running low to non-existent, and oxen scattering off in all directions, things only get worse for the Donner party as they rejoin the trail and tensions rise. A moment of hope descends quickly into dread as an unexpected snowfall blocks off a pivotal pass over the mountains. Along the makeshift encampments surrounding Truckee Lake, and within the Forlorn Hope's camp of death... winter has come for our pioneers!
Do you love military history? Then this is the podcast for you. The Forlorn Hope. Brave lads who volunteered for near-suicidal missions, such as first into the breach of a siege. Their name is mainly synonymous with the Napoleonic Wars. But what is the history of the Forlorn Hope? Who were they? How did armies find enough volunteers for such suicidal missions? Stories:Baseball Stadiums and Romantic Places Most of us know or have visited COOPERSTOWN, NY the Baseball Hall of Fame. It is a great place to visit - off the beaten path but surrounded by lush hills and close enough to the Finger Lakes to enjoy NY wine country. I used to be a great batter in the batting cages. The last time I was there all the balls came out at me at once. I screamed like a girl. An unusual historical baseball stadium is located there, DOUBLEDAY FIELD. This stadium has been there since 1920. Historically, the annual Hall of Fame Game was held there until 1908. Also noteworthy, FENWAY PARK, located in Boston, home to the Boston Red Sox 1912. Famous for its tallest stadium wall in the U.S, the GREEN MONSTER, it's the original WALL. Lastly, WRIGLEY FIELD, located in a neighborhood of Chicago and home to the Chicago Cubs. This location is surrounded by restaurants, bars and residences! The neighbors can watch the game right from their rooftops. https://www.sports-management-degrees.com/lists/5-historical-baseball-stadiums/ Romantic places for me will always be in France. What comes to mind hearing the word HYPNOTHERAPY? Moreover, what do you envision hearing PAST LIFE REGRESSION HYPNOTHERAPY? One aspect of this holistic treatment is that it might be far out there to some.. however it links to Price Pritchett, also a psychologist" "You Are the SOLUTION TO YOUR FUTURE". (Price Pritchett) My feelings on this process is that people are hurting in an extraordinary manner, meaning it's time to take extraordinary measures to help people. I am a firm believer that our society would greatly benefit from embracing the practices and treatments that are offered through past life regression, Reiki, Healing Crystals Elizabeth Lockhart provides several remedies that are a must. Many of these can be performed VIRTUALLY. One point that I want to make about KARMA.. Elizabeth enlightened me that most of us have a misconception of KARMA thinking that it is a “ payback” action for wrong deeds. Elizabeth said KARMA does not provide a payback at all for wrong deeds. Instead it is a path that helps people do right.. this is layman's terms, Elizabeth, forgive me if I oversimplified. It creates an open mind to the next amazing path in finding your purpose in life** Elizabeth Lockhart has studied with the Michael Newton Institute for eons… and she is qualified with the mental health counseling arena with an MS degree specifically. Additionally, her professional certifications are impressive which you can find on her website www.mariposahypnotherapy.com What impressed me when I first met and spoke with Elizabeth is her gentleness, a compassionate ear. She has embarked on this path of Holistic Healing - honestly our world needs this, but the larger reason is that she was guided to provide “alternative healing to addictions, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual well being and wholeness.” Studying with the Michael Newton Institute provides her with fine tuning her holistic treatments https://youtu.be/4LvHploic1Q?si=OijL0DJGeHPz9N4r “We begin with a past life regression to establish comfort and trust, and as a “jumping off” point into one's existence as a soul in the soul realm. Life Between Lives ® spiritual regression hypnotherapy. “ The Institute is focused on fine tuning its presence in the world right now, educationally and otherwise. Michael Newton wrote Journey of Souls, Destiny of Souls, Life Between Lives Spiritual Regression Hypnotherapy, and other books that were edited and published by the Michael Newton Institute, such as Wisdom of Souls, another great read. This work is intended to help people realize experientially that they are much more than their bodies, minds and emotions- more than their egos- we are all souls in a body on this journey called "Life!" These efforts hold hopes that this will bring more peace, unconditional love, purpose and meaning to our existences here on Earth. On a happier note though, the vigneron Forlorn Hope Wines, Matthew Rodrick, loves the long shots. They love the outsiders, the lost causes, the people/projects/ideas abandoned as not having a chance in the world. They love the little guy because they're all about tenacity, relish a challenge, and love us good tussle. In December of 1846, a small group split off from the Donner Party in a desperate attempt to find help. The party, known as the Forlorn Hope, endured the bitter Sierra Nevada winter, trekking roughly 100 miles in 33 days. The route the party took remained unknown for decades. Until 2020, when ultra-runners Bob Crowley and Tim Twietmeyer completed a seven-year odyssey. Together they mapped and retraced the path they think was taken by Forlorn Hope. Today, Tim and Bob join host Mike Corey to share how they managed this incredible feat of endurance.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week we finish ouyr two parter on the Donner party and discuss the multiple methods of survival attempted in this tale. We discuss the Forlorn Hope group who trekked through harrowing tundra and about the four rescue parties. With tragedy often comes hindsight but in this tale it truly feels like man is the ultimate villain. Todays guest is well known within the Wargames World for being Mr 6mm, but there is a lot more to Pete Berry than that. Its a great chance to discuss his wargaming background and a love of Big Games going back to huge games using 15mm Medievals and classic old school Napoleonic Plastics. Forlorn Hope are still a big favourite set of rules for ECW here at Yarkshire Gamer, written by Pete back in the 80s its great to discuss the rules and how they have survived over time, his interest in the period and how renactment of the period influenced his rules development. There is of course a chance to chat about the 6mm - 28mm "divide" and how many of the myths around 6mm gaming and 28mm Big Gaming actually aren't that different. We take a trip into the features section with the quiz and a great entry into Wargames Room 101 before moving on to talk about Baccus Miniatures and the 6mm focused show that is The Joy of Six. You can look at the Baccus range on their website below, Baccus 6mm and get some details about the show below, Joy of Six (joysofsix.co.uk) My next guest is hopefully Mark Hides who runs a Professional Painting Service, Conflict in Colour. As well as that Mark is an author who runs a great blog. We will also go all gooey eyed over the old Sheffield Triples show, still, for me, the greatest Wargames Show ever. Until next time, Sithee Regards Ken The Yarkshire Gamer
In the previous episode [The Donner Party Part 1] Dawn and her guest, Andy Kraft climbed aboard with The Donner Party wagon-train as they begin their ill-fated journey West. We met some of the most prominent individuals including George Donner - after whom the sad collective is named. Also James Reed, who tragically murdered his friend, John Snyder and was subsequently banished. He left, promising his wife and children he would do everything he could to be reunited and save them.00:05:30 - When we left off, The Donner Party had just reunited with the hero, C.T. Stanton - a single, childless man who had ridden ahead of the party months earlier to get help and supplies. His return provided much needed food and comfort, but it proved to be yet another nail in the coffin as it delayed their attempt to cross the summit before a huge snow storm. 00:11:07 - After several attempts to cross the summit with the mules, the Party realizes that they simply cannot make the passing the snow. Instead, they will be slaughtered in the morning, the meat prepared - and then they're all going out on foot before the snow comes... but that very night a snow storm begins that lasts 8 days. The animals are dead and lost beneath the snow and everyone is suddenly oh-so-much more desperate. They're divided into two camps about seven miles apart from one another. Sixty are at Truckee Lake - nine men over eighteen, twelve women, and twenty-nine were children, six of whom were toddlers or younger. The other camp, at Alder Creek, has twenty-one people: six men, three women, and twelve children in all. 00:17:38 - Realizing that the situation was going to lead to inevitable starvation, they decided that the strongest individuals among them would make snowshoes, and attempt to walk to Sutter's Fort in California. If they could make it, they would raise the alarm and return with help. Some call them "The Snowshoe Party", others "The Forlorn Hope". There were fifteen of them: five women, nine men and one twelve-year old boy. 00:29:52 - It has been mutually determined among the members of The Forlorn Hope that starvation was imminent and that 'should one of them die, the others might live.' They were the first among The Donner Party to resort to cannibalism when: "“The men finally mustered up the courage to approach the dead”.00:37:07 - BREAK - Check out the podcast Story Worthy by Christine Blackburn. 00:38:20 - The First Relief Party arrives at Donner Lake on February 1847. It's bad. Of the sixty-five people who were left there when The Forlorn Hope left (two months prior), thirteen people have died, leaving about thirty survivors. They have not *apparently* started eating each other yet. Twenty-one leave with the rescuers: six adults, six children under ten-years-old, nine children who are ten-fourteen-years-old.They have a hell of a trek to safety and three die on the way back. One adult (John Denton), Ada Keseberg (3), William Hook (12, fatally gorges himself when they finally get to food.0042:30 - Incredibly James Reed meets the First Relief Party as they're returning and not only reunites with his wife, but provides them much-needed supplies after their caches were destroyed. He then continues back down to Donner Lake only to discover a scene significantly more disastrous than when last they were contacted. The Second Relief takes with them seventeen people: three adults, two teenagers, and twelve children between nine and one-year-olds. On the way back, three people die, two five-year-old children and a forty-year-old woman. Most of the children are carried out by one guy - John Stark. 01:02:14 -After two more relief parties, the last group to go to Donner lake, are less of a relief, than a 'retrieve'. They arrive on April 10th - It had been a month since the 3rd Relief had left. The first thing they see - there are bodies and body parts EVERYWHERE: Skulls, legs, fragments. Mrs. Murphy is lying there with a leg sawed off and the saw still lying next to her. Mrs. Donner is dead and partly devoured in Keseberg's Cabin, but he is gone and they see a fresh set of tracks leading to the Donner Cabin. Soon, Keseberg is found walking back carrying much of the Donner's money. 01:06:06 - Here is the final head-count (so to speak) of the survivors and victims of the Party: Of the 87 who took the notorious Cut-off, about 42 died. What do you think of those odds?---HAPPY NEW YEAR! Next new episode: February 1st, 2023**We are moving. It's just across town - not as harrowing as The Donner Party move - but a big ol' time-sucking pain in the ass so we're taking January off. ---Instagram/Facebook - @hilfpodcastEmail - hilfpodcast@gmail.comWe thank you for your shares, rates, reviews and foul-mouth appreciation.
The 30-year Magic: The Gathering anniversary edition box, priced at $999, has been a hot topic in the Magic community. Players and collectors were upset at the price point of non-tournament legal proxy cards, especially with there being very low odds of even cracking a Power Nine card within one of the four booster packs. The Forlorn Hope of the Fort King Road and Do Your Best depict the Dade battle of Dec. 28, 1835. In a previous episode, Florida-born artist Jackson Walker described how he makes his living with careful craftsmanship and a burning desire to paint the best and most historically accurate work of which he is capable. His paintings span the length of Florida history since first European contact. In this episode, Jackson Walker hones in on his Seminole War collection of paintings. What went through his mind as he gazed at an empty canvas to begin his big battle scenes, such as those at Okeechobee, Camp Izard, Prospect Bluff, Micanopy, the Wahoo Swamp, and of course that with Major Dade's Command? How has Jackson Walker depicted Seminole as subjects in their own right? What inspired his moving The Capture of Osceola canvas and what problem did The Gentry Line unexpectedly create? Jackson Walker tackles all these questions and more. Jackson has been most generous with his time and paintings to the Seminole Wars Foundation, of which he is both past president and life member. Seminole Wars scenes include Battle at Camp Izard (which hangs at the Seminole Wars Foundation homestead) and Withlacoochee Abyss. Eyes to the Okeechobee (above) and The Americans at Barrancas portray Col. Zachary Taylor and Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson. The Capture of Osceola and the Return to Big Cypress display Jackson Walker's prowess in painting Seminole. Jackson Walker's The Gentry Line, portraying Col. Richard Gentry and his Missouri Volunteers at the Battle of Okeechobee, stirred controversy for unexpected reasons. See more from Jackson Walker at thejwstudio.com and find his wearable art at seminolewars.org Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a combat veteran and of the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Kosovo, and at the Pentagon after 9/11. A military historian, he holds masters degrees in Public History, Communication, and Homeland Security, and is a graduate of the US Army War College with an advanced degree in strategic studies. Hey all and welcome to own rooted brought to you by Olmstead Wine co. I'm your host Max and our guests today are Danielle Shehab and Matthew Rorick of Forlorn Hope located in the Sierra foothills. We started by talking about glass bottle pricing and packaging. It was a conversation full of real-talk and I've never ever ever laughed so hard when recording this show before. For more content you can follow us on instragram @olmstead wine and check out olmsteadwine.com for articles, producer write ups and our monthly newsletter.

In the spring of 1846, a wagon train of hopeful immigrants left Illinois, bound for California, but they had no idea what awaited them on the trail. Cursed by bad luck and mistakes, they took an untested route through mountains and deserts, only to be stranded in the Sierra Nevadas by heavy winter snowfalls. What followed was the horror of death, starvation, desperation, and cannibalism.Timestamps:Monologue: 00:00:00 - 00:57:06Discussion: 00:50:30 - 01:26:55Check out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comCheck out our merch at AmericanHauntingsClothing.comFollow us on Twitter @AmerHauntsPod, @TroyTaylor13, @CodyBeckSTLFollow us on Instagram @AmericanHauntingsPodcast, @TroyTaylorgram, @CodyBeckSTLSubscribe for more bonus content on our Patreon pageThis episode was written by Troy TaylorProduced and edited by Cody BeckMusic for this season is performed by Packy Lundholm and you can find more about his music and upcoming shows on Twitter, Instagram, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, Facebook, YouTube, and PackyLundholm.com Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
This week, we finish our series on the Donner Party by discussing the various attempts to reach California and the eventual group that makes it to Johnson's Ranch to get help for the survivors trapped at Truckee Lake. "The Forlorn Hope", as the group would come to be known, defied all of the odds and survived what should have been a suicide mission - but not without great costs. The decisions they made would go down in history, which is why we still discuss them to this day. The Donner and Reed parties find themselves trapped near Truckee Lake. It is only November but winter snow has come early and trapped the pioneers in what can only be called hell. Freezing and starving the families struggle to survive while clinging o the hope that a rescue party is not too far away. A group of pioneers known as Forlorn Hope take the chance and go for help. After the seven survivors of the Forlorn Hope Party broke through to Johnson Ranch on January 18th, 1847 after a harrowing 33-day trek where 8 members perished, relief parties were mustered to try and retrieve the remaining survivors of the Donner Party. The first of four relief parties departed Johnson Ranch on February 4th, 1847, with mules and provisions. As the frigid winter and rugged Sierra terrain persisted, their numbers dwindled to seven men who summoned their determination and humanity, eventually reaching the buried cabins on the edge of Donner Lake on February 18th, 1847. Upon arriving they encountered silence and saw nothing but snowdrifts 20 feet deep. A lone dark figure emerged from the snow and in a frail women's voice said, “Are you men from California or do you come from heaven?” Thus began the rescue of the Donner Party. The Relief Parties are a lesser-known part of the Donner saga. The grit and selflessness of these men who risked their lives for strangers is a tale of inspiration and intrigue. Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Jennifer Hemmen, and Elke Reimer explored the multi-dimensional persona of each of the relief party members; their history, character, and motivation. With this, they linked together the relief route based on historic records. To honor the true grit and selflessness of the relief parties the Donner Relief Expedition will set off on February 14, 2022, from Johnson Ranch on mules and foot and head east over the Sierra Nevada to the Donner State Park Museum exactly 175 years to the day of the arrival of the 1st Relief Party. Come and take a seat by the campfire and listen to what this crew has planned. In this episode of the First 99 Gear Review, I sit down again with our very own Greg Larkin for Part 2 of his Winter Off-Season Cross Training Plan. During Part 1 we dug into Greg’s indoor workouts including rowing on the Concept2 and Zwift virtual bike racing on his smart trainer. In Part 2 we head to the White Wonderland for some full body winter cross training activities. As mentioned in the last episode Greg was born in Upstate NY and moved to New Hampshire as a kid. Snow sports go back many generations in the Larkin Family tree with both his grandfathers being avid snowshoers with Forlorn Hope style snowshoes. Greg was always a bike race at heart, but he learned at a young age the value of off-season cross training. It started one Christmas when his parents bought the entire family cross country (XC) snow skis. Greg and his family lived in rural New Hampshire. He and his dad would go out for long XC ski day trips in the nearby town forest. This is when he first learned of the BONK. Cycling is very leg-centric but XC skiing is a full body workout (legs, core, back, and arms). New Hampshire terrain is much different than here in CA. Up in the White Mountains the peaks are much lower in elevation, 4k to 6k feet with plenty of rolling hills in the 1K to 2K feet elevation range. You do not have to worry about altitude acclimation; it’s the extreme temperatures of 10 degrees below zero that will take you out. Greg’s early skis were much different than what he rides today. His first set of classical XC skis were 210cm long, waxless, with fish scales, and 3-pin bindings. The fish scales allow you to move the ski forwards but not backwards. Clothing was also challenging as Gore Tex and waterproof outer shells had not been invented yet. People wore lots of wool, Lycra body suits, multiple layers, wind briefs, long-johns, even fleece booties to cover their ski boots. Now we have many more options but layering is still the key. Ultrarunners, adventurists, and amateur historians, Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Jennifer Hemmen and Elke Reimer set out to retrace the steps of the Forlorn Hope through the California Sierra Nevada mountains. We discuss their amazing journey and how it can help us put perspective on our lives and our sport. In the winter of 1846-47 a group of pioneers were headed to California when they were trapped in the high Sierra Nevada Mountains. The snow was over 20 feet deep, they were running out of food, and the group wasn't working together. Three unsuccessful attempts were made to escape and get help from California. On December 16, 1846 a small group began another attempt on homemade snowshoes with enough food for six days; hoping it would take around 10 days to make the 100 mile journey. Check out the short 3 minute video photographer Keith Sutter produced about the adventure. You can find out more about this heroic endurance feat and about the memorial event and how to track them at ForlornHope.org. Some of their photos can be seen here.
The modern-day Forlorn Hope Expedition Team sat down with us in this episode to talk about the genesis, planning and execution of their recently-completed journey from Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee, CA to Johnson's Ranch in Wheatland. Their route closely mirrored that of the original Forlorn Hope team that left the stranded Donner Party on December 16th, 1846 in an attempt to find rescue for the starving settlers. The original Forlorn Hope party faced an arduous trek through the mountains in a year of deep snow and pounding storms with much tragedy and loss of life until a small contingent of seven survivors reached their destination. In this episode, hear the modern team recount the research and planning they had to do to create this project and the tributes that they offered to each of the men, women and children who set out into the unknown 174 years ago.Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Jennifer Hemmen and Elke Reimer each give their own view of the expedition, the impact it had on them to walk in the footsteps of these early pioneers and the future plans they have now that the physical journey is complete.Tune in for this emotional and moving episode and find out more!Forlorn Hope team website: https://www.forlornhope.org/Expedition team bios: https://www.forlornhope.org/expedition-team/Forlorn Hope team Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/371977447411728Team photographer Keith Sutter's expedition summary video: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CJLzcAsD1cJTeam member Elke's Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/ca_wildflower/"The Indifferent Stars Above" book: http://www.danieljamesbrown.com/books/indifferent-stars/Donner Party Diary web site: http://www.donnerpartydiary.com/Donner Party books and DVDs: https://shop.sierrastateparks.org/collections/books-cds-dvds --Your hosts: Greg Larkin / Mike Turner / Jessica HarrisIntro/outro music: Joseph McDade - Elevation: https://josephmcdade.com/music/elevationSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/themile99interview)

I'm publishing this early because we're so excited for you guys to hear it! Enjoy this "early access"! This episode we are picking up with The Donner Party after they reached the end of Hasting's Cutoff. We're going to talk about the first murder to be carried out, then the series of bad choices and things that were out of their hands that brought on the cannibalism we've all been waiting to hear about. Then things look up after when some Native Americans help The Forlorn Hope and then help is sent back to Donner Camp to help the survivors. But they were not prepared for what they were going to see at the cabins. Book (Wine) Club: Reading Between the Wines with Lauren Popish
Hello and welcome to Book Wine Club Season 2, a podcast where I, Lauren Popish, pair my latest read with a new wine, and then talk it out with my opinionated and inebriated co hosts, Ryan Conbruck and Julia Popish. On today’s episode Ryan, Julia, and I will be discussing the second half of On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong. If you haven’t listened to the previous episode where we discussed the first half of the book, you’re going to want to stop, go back, and listen to that first. Today we’ll be pairing our read with a glass or three of a 2019 rose called Queen of the Sierra by Forlorn Hope from Rorick Heritage Vineyard. Pour yourself a glass and stay tuned.Link to book: https://amzn.to/2UCizheLink to wine: https://grainvine.com/products/forlorn-hope-queen-of-the-sierra-rorick-heritage-vineyard-sierra-foothills-roseOn Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous Part 2 by Ocean VuongIt’s 256 pages in length. For this episode, we read from halfway to the end.About the bookOn Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is as much about the power of telling one’s own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard.About the author:Ocean Vuong is a Vietnamese American poet, essayist and novelist. He is a recipient of the 2014 Ruth Lilly/Sargent Rosenberg fellowship from the Poetry Foundation, a 2016 Whiting Award, and the 2017 T.S. Eliot Prize for his poetry. His debut novel, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, was published in 2019. He received a MacArthur Grant the same year.About the wine:Each of the Forlorn Hope wines may be put through very different fermentations en route to becoming one of our Rare Creatures -- Sèmillon is destemmed and pressed, then fermented in old and neutral barrels; Gewürztraminer is destemmed and fermented on the skins; Alvarelhão is fermented whole-cluster with no destemming or initial breaking of the fruit -- but throughout it all a common vein runs through the thought process in the cellar: listen to what the fermentation is saying as it transforms from fruit into wine. What does it want to become? In what direction does its nature want to lead it? In this manner we guide our ferments along, receiving suggestions and guidance from the wine and fermentative microbes themselves.Get in touchOur sommelier, Emily Rutan: @emilythesommLauren Popish: @laurenpopishJulia Popish: @juliapopishRyan Consbruck @specialrobotdog

In the last episode of HPH, we began to tell you about history's worst road trip: The Donner Party migration of 1846. In that episode we had a good deal of death and suffering, but it was all just the tip of the poop iceberg. In this episode, Greg and Chris are diving into the story of the party members who decided to walk out of the Sierra Nevada Mountains to seek help. They were known as the snowshoe group because they wore snowshoes. They would also become known as The Forlorn Hope because it all just goes horribly wrong. And if you like hearing about how 19th century settlers cooked human hearts over an open fire, then boy is this the episode for you! So, we come to the end of another calendar year, wow, thank you for all the support and listening to us each week as we look at topics we feel deserve more attention. Now this episode we are doing a year in review and discuss what some of our favourites were, what we felt were some of the highlights and what was just downright funny. So strap in as we look back on a year full of robots, space travel, recycling, and the energetic joy of Katie Bouman, and that is just the start. We also go for a ride looking at the movies and tv series that have made us laugh, cry, scream, and sit in awe throughout the year. We discuss the controversy of crazy violence and insanity in movies such as Rambo – Last Blood. Yep some one has claimed it is… Nope you will need to listen in to know what is happening. Also we look at the year in games and take stock of what has happened. We laugh at some of it, get annoyed at some, and shake our heads in bewilderment at others. We recap what has been some of the most exciting and stand out moments for us this year in terms of topics. We also include some special shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events for the end of the year. So as the year draws to a close and the dawn of a new one creeps over the horizon we once more ask you to take care of yourselves, look out for each other, and stay hydrated. 2019 in Science - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_in_science2019 in Movies, TV & Anime - https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/biggest-movie-news-2019/- https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-movies-2019/- https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-tv-2019/2019 in Gaming - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_in_video_gamingOther topics discussed Kirigami Robots- https://www.inverse.com/article/61662-self-folding-kirigami-robotsBoston Dynamics- https://www.bostondynamics.com/New Horizons (interplanetary space probe that was launched as a part of NASA's New Frontiers program.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_HorizonsSpaceX Dragon (reusable cargo spacecraft developed by SpaceX, an American private space transportation company.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpaceX_DragonMaking breathable Oxygen using comets- https://www.caltech.edu/about/news/comet-inspires-chemistry-making-breathable-oxygen-marsE-Scooters are not green enough- https://phys.org/news/2019-08-e-scooters-green-options.htmlTextile Recycling - https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2019-06-15/textile-recycling-fashion-old-clothes-waste/11197904Black Hole image makes history- https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/chandra/news/black-hole-image-makes-history- https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47873592Katie Bouman: American computer scientist working in the field of computer imagery. Episode 46 Forlorn Hope
First thing's first! Please check out our sponsor, Day 11 Podcast at www.day11podcast.com and give them some love! I would like to report that on this our final episode, I finally got why they are called that. I am not proud. This episode was not my favorite, and I'm totally sitting here willing to hear you out if you've got some information that will help me out with deciphering this. I watched it a couple times, read some articles that supposedly broke the timelines down, RoShawn watched a video that allegedly would help us make sense of it...and yet. We still struggled throughout this whole episode (it doesn't help that RoShawn was on a bunch of medication and foggy as hell). I can't help but wonder if the show is falling into that trap of trying to do to much and be too clever, you know? Like they still wanted to play with time the way they did last season, but because they knew everyone was going to be looking for that, they decided to make it trickier...to the point that you need charts and graphs to make sense of it, which is frankly just not how I want to watch TV. And there were other issues this season, like Wyatt's plan that made no sense at Forlorn Hope. I have gotten a lot of comments and messages suggesting what that plan was about, and the fact that it seemed like everyone had a totally different (and very unsupported) theory makes me feel pretty secure in my camp, which I call "It Didn't Make Sense And They're Just Hoping You Will Be Distracted By How Ruthless Wyatt Is And Not Notice". Anyway, here's hoping that the next season will be a little more coherent. Thanks for listening, everyone, and I can't wait to see you again.
In this episode we begin our look into the descent of the Donner Party as they emigrate from Missouri to California. They started out optimistic, but along the way the wagon train faced Native American attacks, dehydration, starvation, murder, and a total loss of hope. In this first part, we talk about the Donner Party's trip up until they reached Truckee Lake and detail the desperation mission deemed "Forlorn Hope" which began to indulge in the notorious acts for which the Donner Party is known: cannibalism. In the next part we will cover the happenings back at camp during and after Forlorn Hope, as well as attempts by James Reed to reach his family snowbound on the mountain. The opening audio comes from Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film, The Shining. Keep up with us on Twitter and Instagram @tomandemir --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/conspiracyclub/support
On the conclusion to our series on America's most famous cannibals, we cover the horrifying journey of the group known as the Forlorn Hope, the awful lengths people at the base camp went to for survival, and the murders that happened as a result of both.

Dubbed ‘The Forlorn Hope’, the first attempt at a rescue spawned two of the darkest and most infamous ones of the entire ordeal known as The Donner Party: Cannibalism and Murder.
