Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society. Today's guest is RIMS 2023 Rising Star Emily L. Bloedel, the face of the RIMS Rocky Mountain Chapter. Emily shares highlights of her career so far, her participation in RIMS,  and her expectations as an involved risk professional.   Key Takeaways: [:01] About RIMScast. [:26] I will be joined by RIMS 2023 Rising Star Emily L. Bloedel. [:34] All about upcoming RIMS webinars, workshops, events, and more! [1:15] About RIMS-CRMP. [1:28] About RIMS-CRMP-FED. [2:03] About RISKWORLD 2023 with closing keynote speaker Danica Patrick! [2:40] About today's episode with Emily L. Bloedel, the manager of contracts and legal affairs and corporate counsel at Merrick & Company, an engineering and architectural firm, based in Denver, Colorado. [2:53] Emily is the face of the RIMS Rocky Mountain Chapter where she is concluding her term as president in 2023. She contributes much to Merrick and RIMS on the local and global levels as well as the legal and risk professions, which is why she was named RIMS Rising Star for 2023. [3:10] We're going to learn about her risk philosophy, some of her processes, and how she maintains balance in her legal and risk roles. Read her profile in the Awards edition of RIMS Risk Management Magazine this month and she will be with me at RISKWORLD Global Studio for RIMScast Live on May 1st at 3:00 p.m. She's omnipresent, folks! [3:33] RIMS 2023 Rising Star Emily Bloedel, welcome to RIMScast! [3:55] Emily was thrilled to be selected as the RIMS 2023 Rising Star! There are so many wonderful people in the profession! It made her year! [4:14] Justin wrote an article in Risk Management magazine supplement, “Rising Star 2023: Emily L. Bloedel.” During law school, Emily interned for Merrick & Company and enjoyed it. On graduation, Emily passed the bar and spent a few years practicing law. [5:09] Practicing law was not all Emily had hoped, so she looked for other opportunities. Her former boss at Merrick told her about an opportunity to start an in-house department. She jumped at the chance and has been at Merrick for eight years. [6:14] Merrick reaches out to local politicians and organizations so they can help to shape legislative changes in the industry that are coming. [7:35] Colorado has different terrains and soils. What works in one location may be unsuitable for another location. Merrick looks carefully at that and builds it into contracts to make sure that what the clients are doing in a location is done safely. [8:21] Merrick has a water group that looks at how clients are treating water safely and ensuring that it flows. They help clients restore balance to areas that have been affected by industry. [9:40] About Merrick's Technology Disruptors Committee. They look at technology that may disrupt Merrick's business or their clients. They have eight areas of focus. They have a working group looking solely at Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality. Merrick funds an initiative to use VR/AR on projects to provide value to clients. [11:07] Emily tells how the committee developed and focused on specific areas of technology. She is no longer on the committee as her risk focus is no longer needed. [12:16] Cyberrisk is top-of-mind now for Emily. Merrick has formed a cyber-incident response plan and cyber-incident response team. Emily continues deepening her involvement in this area. They are subject to new and different attacks every day. [13:22] Emily looks forward to going into depth on the Merrick risk matrix when she appears in the RISKWORLD Global Studio for RIMScast Live on May 1st at 3:00 p.m. Her boss, Carter Boardman, set up a matrix to help project managers, teams, and support staff evaluate the risk of a project. Emily explains the categories of risk. [14:51] The risks Emily finds acceptable generally go through. As an employee-owned firm, everyone approaches carefully the risks the company takes. A risk that goes badly impacts them all. They are purposeful about what projects they bring for consideration. But sometimes they accept poor contract terms because they want the client. [15:19] In the case of a poor contract, Merrick mitigates the risk as much as it can. It is challenging for Emily. The lawyer in her does not like those contracts! [15:33] RIMS plug time! Sponsor a weekly or dedicated episode of RIMScast! Contact us at pd@rims.org. Register for RISKWORLD 2023, and the workshops before RISKWORLD. [16:35] Justin revisits his interview with Johnny C. Taylor Jr., President and CEO of SHRM, about what Johnny has in store during his opening keynote at RISKWORLD. It relates to COVID-19! [18:27] About awards and additional RISKWORLD keynotes, including Danica Patrick! [18:52] RIMScast Live will be held at the Global Studio on May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd while at RISKworld featuring chats with leaders from the international risk community. [19:19] Merrick has an annual employee ownership celebration week. For Emily, employee ownership means pride and responsibility. [20:58] Emily started with RIMS when she interned for Merrick in law school. She attended chapter meetings and a golf tournament with her boss. When Emily came back to Merrick, she was excited that the company was still involved in RIMS. Her boss encouraged her to get as involved as possible to develop as a young professional. [21:44] Emily joined the local chapter. Then she had the opportunity to join the RIMS Rising Risk Professional Advisory Group where she met and connected with other risk professionals across the globe. She was invited to apply to join the Rocky Mountain RIMS Chapter Board, so she did and later became Vice President. [22:34] Emily will be finishing her tenure as President of the Chapter in early September. Emily gives a shoutout to her Vice President who will take over as President. [23:31] Justin and Emily met virtually during COVID-19 when Emily did a webinar with Rebecca Clement from LLoyd's. RIMS broadcast the webinar globally and it was a great way to call attention to the Rocky Mountain Chapter. Emily enjoyed getting to know Rebecca Clement and working with Justin through the webinar. [24:32] Justin and Emily also met at RISKWORLD 2022 and they networked there. Emily has found a lot of value in networking and agrees that the rising generation of risk professionals needs to network to have a fulfilling career. In-person connection is impossible to replace. It creates a network of support. [26:25] On October 4th‒6th, The RIMS Western Regional will be held in Vail, Colorado. The Rocky Mountain Chapter is very excited to host it. Emily shares her thoughts on the opportunity. [27:21] Justin congratulates Emily again on being named RIMS Rising Star for 2023. [27:35] Emily's parting thoughts: “You can be as involved or uninvolved in RIMS as you want. You get out what you put in. I've been very fortunate to have the opportunity to be involved. I would encourage you to look at the different ways you can be involved. There are opportunities here that you might not even be aware of, that might help you grow!” [28:13] On May 1st at 3:00 p.m. in the Global Studio at RISKWORLD, Emily will join Justin for RIMScast Live to talk granularly about the risk matrix and other topics. [28:38] Special thanks to RIMS 2023 Rising Star Emily Bloedel for joining RIMScast. Read about her in the Special Awards Supplement to RIMS Risk Management magazine and visit the Global Studio on May 1st at 3:00 p.m. at RISKWORLD for RIMScast Live with Emily Bloedel. We shared some insights on the best practices of your nonprofit peers and forward-thinking nonprofits. Where should you invest your bandwidth and budget? What technology tools are coming, and where should you hold off and wait for the market to catch up? How do you know when your organization is ready to invest in forward-looking technology that will give you an advantage in your sector and as you deliver your mission? Why is it important to stay current, even if your organization is not the most tech-savvy nonprofit out there? With recent hacks and breeches, even small nonprofits are learning that the need for Cybersecurity is growing and evolving as these attacks become bigger and bigger business. As the cybersecurity community continues to look to out-pace the development of new attacks and respond to new vulnerabilities, what are the innovations in prevention that are emerging? Community IT Innovators' CTO and cybersecurity expert Matt Eshleman answered your questions on emerging threats, emerging ideas and tools on prevention, and best practices on staff cybersecurity training. Senior Consultant Nura Aboki weighed in with his observations on what nonprofits with IT bandwidth and expertise are investing in. What are the exciting new technologies nonprofits can expect to impact our sector, such as ChatGPT and other Artificial Intelligence applications, donations in Crypto, or training through Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality that could be the next big thing? Remembering how the iPhone/iPad, social media (remember the ice bucket challenge?), or data management have changed nonprofit operations in the blink of an eye, we're going to look into the future to think about where nonprofit IT is ripe for disruption.Patrick Sprehe is our IT Business Manager Team Lead, managing the team that guides our clients' IT roadmaps and provides help with overcoming nonprofit technology challenges. Patrick brings a deep knowledge of technical support, an interest in new technology uses at nonprofits, and experience implementing and maintaining established platforms and systems for large and mid-sized nonprofit clients. Ethics in Marketing

In this episode, Mikhail and Louis talk about ethical problems presented by the new technology used in marketing -- virtual reality, augmented reality, and the metaverse. In some way this is a bigger question of relationships between marketing and any new technology. If there are no rules on how new technology can be used in marketing, you know that some companies will use it in a predatory way. In many cases, such use of technology is very profitable. And other companies have no choice but to do something similar, or they will be out of business. This also applies to marketers on the individual level. If an unethical practice is widely spread and accepted in our profession, it makes it extremely hard for an ethical marketer to avoid doing it, which creates an internal psychological conflict.

We explained the differences between the Virtual Reality , Augmented Reality & Mixed Reality. This week we  will make you question yourself, If life is Real or a Simulation?  Are we in a Mixed Reality right now?  Reality TV and Social Media has Altered our Physical Reality and changed our Human Perspective and Perception already without putting on a pair of Expensive, Fancy Mixed Reality Glasses. Are we in a Mixed Reality right now? What will the affects of Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality have on our Brains? Can we Re-Mix this Reality? Lots of questions, we cant eait to hear the Families thoughts.  Also we will discuss 5G. Yep, 5G again! Have you noticed the commercials on TV advertising the New 5G Network and 5G Phones?  What is 10G and who is currently developing it to directly compete with 5G?  Lastly we will dialog about Facebook's announcement about Facebook Coin. A Facebook Cypto Currency to rival Bitcoind and Ethereum? Is this good or bad, we will discuss.  Please don't hesitate to call and ask a question, give a answer or make a statement, we look forward to it.  L.A. On this week's Layovers episode, Grant and Keith discuss the rapidly up-and-coming world of Virtual and Augmented Reality. It seems like just yesterday we were experimenting with the idea of this through the clunky TV Remote handle of the Nintendo Wii. Now we can sit courtside to our favorite NBA games with the don of a futuristic cowl. What a crazy world we live in, right? What does this mean for the future of our species? What will it mean for our kids, and how will they grow up? Will we end up living forever through the means of a virtual world? SO MANY QUESTIONS! We have no answers.   On this week's episode, Keith and Grant introduce a new segment (finally, some structure, we get it) where we dissect the latest and greatest of the ever popular Reddit thread; Unpopular Opinions. Aaron Frank, principal faculty member at Singularity University, has an extensive background in life science and communication, with a specialization in augmented and virtual reality (VR). He researches and reports on trends affecting business. Singularity University is a global community that uses expanding technologies to take on some of the planet's greatest challenges. Through its extensive platform comprised of learning and innovation resources, Singularity intends to empower people to meet problems head-on and find solutions via a network of experts in AI, robotics, and digital biology.  Frank recounts several stories of businesses that have seen incredible expansion due to virtual world technology, such as a billion-dollar real estate business that has completely adopted virtual activity, which allows for all their employees to gather online, from wherever they are in the world. But the environments are larger and more detailed than most would ever imagine, with interactive campuses that allow users to take on all sorts of activities in the virtual world. In business, and in play, Frank discusses how the technology has broken through to higher levels and provides users with vivid, intense experiences virtually.  He gives an insightful look at the virtual worlds being designed today that allow users to experience big events, such as concerts and festivals, and even political debates, as an avatar, which enables them to interact and communicate with other avatars. And Frank outlines some of the newest technology being introduced by global giants such as Facebook and others. He provides an overview of Facebook's new Venues product, which utilizes 360 VR cameras to capture events. Facebook's entry into the VR space will allow users to enjoy live events such as major concerts, and sports, and attend premieres of big movies, all over the globe, and experience them with their friends from anywhere. And while VR technology is fifteen or more years old, the latest components that allow for real, multiple users shared experiences are only in their nascent stages. The technology expert details some of the other opportunities for VR environments, such as security and protection. Frank explains how we can expect the future of location and perimeter security to be 100% virtual, in that security personnel will no longer be doing foot patrols in actual space but will be walking a virtual space instead. As virtual worlds merge with the real world, the stuff of science fiction novels and movies will become our actual reality.  Frank states that by design, Singularity University focuses only on the positive ways that technology can be utilized, but he acknowledges that negative applications of technology are certainly within the realm of possibility. Frank delves into some of the current concerns that many people have with technology advances such as privacy issues and a general fear of a surveillance state. And he points out that while VR is incredibly interesting and has many positive applications, VR environments offer little privacy in that everything that is done, looked at, etc. is entirely trackable. However, as Frank states, blockchain technology, which is essentially a list of records called blocks that are linked using cryptography, may deliver some additional privacy and anonymity that will allay users' anxiety. Ultimately, however, as networks expand and technology explodes, VR and augmented reality will become a regular part of our daily experience in business, and also for pleasure. And tech companies are racing to provide networks that have the processing power to keep up with innovative design as it advances at breathtaking rates.
