Author DAVID R. SLAYTON returns to Vox Vomitus with his newest fantasy, ROGUE COMMUNITY COLLEGE, the first installment in the LIBERTY HOUSE series, which draws from his earlier amazing Adam Binder Series. “David R. Slayton is a master of tightly plotted, can't-stop-reading fantasy.” — “Barbara Ann Wright, award-winning, Lambda-nominated author” “David's stories are at once relatable and otherworldly. Allowing an exploration of self and circumstance with the distance of imagination.” — “Chris and Bronwyn, Thirsty on Toon podcast” “Fun, witty, at times dark, but always hopeful, David's writing opens the door to a world where LGBTQ+ characters get to be the heroes who will need to overcome family trauma if they're going to save the world.” — “James Persichetti, author of A Tale of Two Knights” “Rough and tumble urban fantasy honed with eldritch grace.” — “S. W. Sondheimer “ About ROGUE COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Isaac Frost is an assassin. Raised in the Graveyard of the cruel and mysterious Undertaker, he has mastered the deadly art of the knife and the skill of survival, together with scores of others just like him—young men taken from their families to become the most infamous killers throughout the realms of elves and humans. But Isaac is unique: a single drop of another's blood can confer upon him the knowledge and power of friend and foe alike. After crossing paths with the elf queen Argent, Isaac is sent to a strange magical school for wayward practitioners in the hopes that he can learn where he—and his unusual talent—fit in the world. Isaac is charmed by the school's chaotic nature and finds himself unexpectedly drawn to Vran, a Sea Elf haunted by secret knowledge. But Vran isn't the only one with secrets, and Isaac's arrival is no accident. The Undertaker has charged him with infiltrating the school for the purpose of destroying it utterly, and his future rests on completing his mission—before the Undertaker takes matters into his own hands. Two time Colorado Book Award finalist David R. Slayton (He/Him) grew up outside of Guthrie, Oklahoma, where finding fantasy novels was pretty challenging and finding fantasy novels with diverse characters was downright impossible. In 2015, David founded Trick or Read, an annual initiative to give out books along with candy to children on Halloween as well as uplift lesser-known authors or those from marginalized backgrounds. A lifelong Dungeon Master, video gamer, and sci-fi/fantasy/comic book fan, David has degrees in History and English from Metropolitan State University in Denver. He'll happily talk your ear off about anything from Ancient Greece to Star Trek. VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. Frances White, author of VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED 1000 years of peace. A 12 day voyage. 12 heirs on board all blessed with powers. But where there is magic there is murder. And one unlikely hero has to stop it all. 'VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED is a fiendishly compelling locked room mystery brimming with character and heart that blew me away! White's protagonist Ganymedes Piscero is utterly endearing. His unique brand of humour, bravado, and vulnerability hits a bullseye in the feels. A delightful debut.'' A.Y Chao, bestselling author of 'Shanghai Immortal' ‘This book reads like Agatha Christie took Gideon the Ninth out for a boat party and got it delirious on champagne and fairy floss. A wonderful, fantastical murder mystery told by a fabulously bitchy narrator.' Freya Marske, author of The Last Binding Trilogy 'An enchanting, bloody delight. Full of magic, laugh-out-loud humor, and so much murder' Gabi Burton, author of 'Sing Me To Sleep' Frances White is the author of Voyage of the Damned, a fantasy murder mystery at sea, coming in 2024 from Penguin Michael Joseph. Born in Leicester and now a Nottingham resident, Frances is a creative writing graduate from Royal Holloway University of London. She has a soft spot for writing unlikely, flawed, messy heroes and loves mixing humour and heartbreak. Frances is also passionate about bringing more LGBTQIA+ representation and fat positivity into fantasy. When not writing, she can be found sewing costumes for comic conventions. YOU'RE GONNA DIE ALONE (& other excellent news) Storyteller and social media fast-talker, Devrie Donalson is best known for her witty, relatable, authentic storytelling that is equal parts heart and humor. On the eve of her 30th birthday, Donalson quit her job as a florist and flew to Scotland without much of a plan but the intention to build a life she could be proud of and to find the feeling of being at home. There she discovered a new wave of people all over the world who resonated with the impulse to take a leap and find something new, and who have committed to following along. She has been interviewed by BBC, her travels have been covered by dozens of news outlets in the UK, and she even made it into Google's Year in Search 2022 short film. She is currently working on a novel that explores how we learn to be loved, how we find the love we deserve, and what it means to change — all with a healthy dose of (kilted?) Scottish men, witty banter, and a heroine worth rooting for. Devrie continues to entertain her ever-growing online audience with her off-beat funny bone and unbridled authenticity as she chronicles her pursuit of a life well-lived. www.devriewrites.com VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. I had a second great conversation on Keepin It Real w/Caramel Podcast "As We Say 100" with Jennifer Anne Gordon. Jennifer and I spoke back in 2021. It was great to catch up with her to see what she has going on. Jennifer is very funny and amazing to speak with, and by the end of our conversation, we both decided we will have a comedy tour sponsored by our publicist, Mickey Mikkelson. Now, all about Jennifer Anne Gordon - Jennifer is an award-winning author and popular host of the Vox Vomitus podcast. Her novel Beautiful Frightening and Silent won the Kindle Award for Best Horror/Suspense for 2020, Best Horror 2020 from Authors on the Air, and was a finalist for American Book Fest's Best Book Award- Horror, 2020. It also received the Platinum 5 Star Review from Reader's Choice as well as the Gold Seal from Book View. Her latest novel Pretty/Ugly won the Helicon Award for Best Horror for 2022, the Kindle Award for Best Novel of the Year (Reader's Choice), as well as the Gold Medal from Literary Titan. Jennifer is a member of Mystery Writers of America, the Horror Writers Association (where she serves on a jury for the Stoker Awards) and is the Agents and Editors chair of the New England Crime Bake Committee. Her upcoming collection, The Japanese Box and Other Stories, was published in August of 2023 (Last Waltz Publishing) she is also a featured essayist in Let Grief Speak by Diane Zinna (Columbia University Press 2024).Her personal essays on grief, trauma, and horror have been published in The Horror Tree, Ladies of Horror Fiction, The Nerd Daily, and Reader's Entertainment Magazine. The Japanese Box horror novel is the newest collection for Jennifer. A SYNOPSIS ABOUT THE BOOK: Simulacrum is a dark comedic tale about college life and love. It is the story of what happens when two sociopaths attend art exhibits, drink lemon vodka, and spar over everything and anything. Periods. Coloring books. Art. This is the story of our unnamed narrator... an origin story of a would-be, hopes to be, serial killer. The Japanese Box is a story that blends memoir, creative nonfiction, and the horror of a coming-of age story, and a coming of middle-aged story. Imagine growing up with a reflection that is often absent and a Japanese box that is filled with things that should never have been there. Memories. Violence. The Japanese Box is a love letter to anxiety, trauma, grief, and longing. It is a story of a child becoming an adult and all the ghosts and misfortunes that happen in order to survive. The Lithium Moon: Simone is an artist by day and an emotionally abused wife at night. She is a successful artist with a long history of schizoid effective disorder with bipolar tendencies. When her marriage goes from good to bad, she suffers her first miscarriage. The tragedy coincides with a wolf moon-trauma, and magic converge seems to converge in Simone's head. This story explores sadness, illness, hallucinations, full moons, and the creative process. What stage of grief is not a poem, or a song, but a dirge. Fantasy and facts, this poem walks a fine line between nightmares and memories. Grief stories and lovestories. Dogs and drama. Nightmares, and nevermore. The book is available worldwide in digital and paperback formats or at The Japanese Box and Other Stories: Gordon, Jennifer Anne: 9798986845135: Amazon.com: Books The Japanese Box and Other Stories: Gordon, Jennifer Anne: 9798986845135: Books - Amazon.ca - For more information you can visit her website at www.JenniferAnneGordon.com or you can go to any social media and follow Jennifer Anne Gordon. The precision of observation here speaks not only to the honesty of the writer, but to the respect granted in all phases of life; Jennifer Anne Gordon is on full display. Smart, full of character, vibrant. You will feel, you will feel big, and you will return, too, to the richest moments of your own history, landmarks that bring you to both smile and weep. –Josh Malerman New York Times best-selling author of Bird Box and Daphne I compulsively read anything Jennifer Anne Gordon writes. Like the best contemporary filmmakers stitching together grief and horror, her storytelling is a sharp needle that both pierces and tugs us close. Compulsive and genre-slashing, with exquisite, rhythmic prose, THE JAPANESE BOX is an extraordinary exploration of alone-ness that beats and breathes: grief is horror, grief is love. We as readers are drawn ever closer to this beautifully haunted narrator until we're face-down in the box with her. Does she feel us? She thinks she is alone. We all think we are alone. By the end we've become the ghosts in her black room, reaching out to gently touch her hair and whisper we're here. -Diane Zinna, author of The All-Night Sun From the author of the Kindle Award Winning Novel for Best Horror 2020 —Beautiful, Frightening, and Silent—and Pretty/Ugly— Winner of The Kindle Award for Best Novel 2022 (Reader's Choice) comes a collection of short stories contemplating horror, grief, and trauma. By day, I serve as Vice President of Easter Seals North Georgia, Inc., a non-profit organization strengthening children and their families at the most critical times in their development. Through my non-profit work, I am a champion for early childhood literacy. In all the hours between, I write. Raised alongside three feral, younger brothers in the rash-inducing, subtropical climate of Cairo Georgia, I am a lifelong resident of the South. A circumstance, no doubt, leaving an indelible mark upon my voice as a writer. Aside from sense of place, my writing is influenced and inspired by the literary work of others. As a boy, it was with great obsession, I turned the well-worn pages of Charlotte Brontë's, Jane Eyre. Wuthering Heights? Yes, another source of adoration. And Truman Capote's debut novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, I admire with equal reverence along with everything ever written by Tennessee Williams. Charles Dickens' Miss Havisham is one of my all-time favorite characters. Many hours I spent playing her, wrapped in an old lace tablecloth borrowed from my mother's linen closet—my tattered, makeshift wedding dress. Locked away in my boyhood room, I haunted the place, plotting revenge, shooing rats from the wedding cake. “Break their hearts my pride and hope, break their hearts and have no mercy,” I would whisper into the impressionable ear of my lovely Estella. Break their hearts. As an adult, my literary palate is diverse, reading everyone from the sublime Michael Cunningham to the gifted Jesmyn Ward to the incomparable Ron Rash. Though my tastes have evolved through the years, one constant remains: the impact of literature and art and music upon my writing. And my unrelenting quest to make and find beauty in this world. https://robertlgwaltney.com VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. Her second novel, The Boy Who Could See Demons (2012), is a cult classic. Her sixth novel, The Lighthouse Witches, was published in October 2021, and was an Indigo Book of the Month and an international bestseller. CJ's work is concerned with trauma, motherhood, loss, and social justice. CJ holds a BA (Hons), MA, and PhD from Queen's University, Belfast, and commenced her academic career in 2005 as a Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Sunderland. https://www.monicabyrne.org/ I grew up in Annville, Pennsylvania, as the youngest of five. Our parents were both Catholic theologians, and our family emphasized mysticism, social justice, and the centrality of art to religious experience. Despite growing up on art, I set my heart on becoming an astronaut----so went to Wellesley College and MIT for degrees in biochemistry, worked at NASA during the summers, and got my pilot's license. But while at MIT, I realized that I liked making things up much more than finding things out. I finished a Master's and moved to Durham, North Carolina, and have been writing ever since. I graduated from the Clarion Workshop in 2008, where I studied with Neil Gaiman, Nalo Hopkinson, and Kelly Link. My debut novel, The Girl in the Road, was published in 2014. It won the Tiptree Award and was listed for the Kitschie, Locus, and DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. My second novel, The Actual Star, was published by Harper Voyager on September 14, 2021. I've performed original monologues twice at TED, hosted a technology series for ViceUK, and spoken across the country on futurism and science fiction. My short stories and essays have been published in The Baffler, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Religion Dispatches, Wired, Tor.com, Electric Velocipede, Fantasy Magazine, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Electric Literature, and Glimmer Train. I've written five plays produced in Durham, one of which, What Every Girl Should Know, has been performed from Berkeley to Dublin. GUEST: Shelley Parker-Chan is an Asian-Australian former diplomat and international development adviser who spent nearly a decade working on human rights, gender equality and LGBT rights in Southeast Asia. Named after the Romantic poet, she was raised on a steady diet of Greek myths, Arthurian legend and Chinese tales of suffering and tragic romance. Her debut novel She Who Became the Sun owes more than a little to all three. A lush, fresh literary voice merges with commercial appeal in this accomplished, poetic debut of war and destiny. Sweeping across an epic alternate China, She Who Became the Sun is Mulan meets The Song of Achilles—a bold reimagining of the rise of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty as the story of a female monk who will stop at nothing to gain the Mandate of Heaven and achieve greatness. Daily Mail calls it “Immersive storytelling at its finest,” and her novel, just released in July 2021, has already become a #1 international bestseller and is an Editor's Pick for Science Fiction/Fantasy. In 2017 she was awarded an Otherwise (Tiptree) Fellowship for a work of speculative narrative that expands our understanding of gender. GUEST: Kira Jane Buxton's writing has appeared in The New York Times, NewYorker.com, McSweeney's, The Rumpus, Huffington Post, and more. Her debut novel Hollow Kingdom was an Indie Next pick, a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor, the Audie Awards, and the Washington State Book Awards, and was named a best book of 2019 by Good Housekeeping, NPR, and Book Riot. “Feral Creatures--a stupendous sophomore novel for Buxton, and sentimental sequel to my favorite adventure story of 2019-- cannot be missed! It's a colorful education in climate change, ecology, and zoology; a tender acknowledgement of the unavoidable "dark tides" we all sink into--especially during disastrous times; a genuine display of the hopeful, hilarious, and often fearful process of building a family; a true odyssey.” - Third Place Books (Lake Forest Park, WA) "Kira Jane Buxton's voice is fresh, like a newly dug grave, but so joyful and honest you'll laugh out loud, and then check to make sure you haven't lost an eyeball."―Jamie Ford, New York Times bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Praise for Hollow Kingdom "Buxton's quirky ideas and compelling nonhuman characters will satisfy literary fiction and zombie genre enthusiasts alike who are looking for something beguilingly different."―Booklist, Starred Review for Hollow Kingdom: Kira Jane Buxton calls the tropical utopia of Seattle home and spends her time with three cats, a dog, two crows, a charm of hummingbirds, five Steller's jays, two dark-eyed juncos, two squirrels, and a husband. https://www.kirajanebuxton.com HOST: Allison M. Hubbard is a multi-genre novelist, focusing on literary science fiction, contemporary romance, and women's fiction.
