Larry and Cheryl Webster may not be big recording artists or the kind of musicians that sell-out arenas around the world, but they are as important to the music industry and community as anyone that has ever come out of Eastern Kentucky. Their network of contacts and influence put them in the role of linchpin for many mountain and bluegrass musicians through the now six decades the couple has been playing, writing, performing and booking music. It just so happens they were the couple whose Friday night pickin' and grinnin' sessions gave one of our hosts, Jason Falls, his roots in loving roots music. So he ventured home to Pike County, Ky., and invited himself into their kitchen for a chat.  Larry and Cheryl headed up The Mule Band, a traditional folk, mountain and bluegrass group, for years. It has served as the house band, if you will, for Pikeville, Ky.'s annual spring festival called Hillbilly Days, on and off since the late 1970s. Larry would invite promising mountain and bluegrass artists to play the event which became quite an honor for musicians from the genres.  Larry is also a prolific folk and mountain music songwriter with credits on recordings by The Local Honeys, Guy Carawan and Nate Polly among others.  Cheryl is known for her ability to harmonize and comes from an extensive family of musical talent including her cousin Darrell Scott. She tells the story of how his song “You'll never leave Harlan alive” is about their great grandparents. The song had new life injected into its popularity when original recording artist Patty Loveless along with Chris Stapleton performed it at the 2022 CMA Awards. The Websters are also the grandparents of promising fiddle player Ella Webster, the current touring player in Cole Chaney's band.     In a bonus segment, Frank and Falls share a clip from an interview with author Amy Bizzarri, whose latest book The Best Hits on the Blues Highway: Nashville to New Orleans on Route 61 is fantastic.  Frank and Falls also talk about their daughter's recent music activity including Lollapalooza 2024, and the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts. And shared new music for your listening pleasure in the Pickin' the Grinnin' segment after the interview. On this week's Flyover Country, Scott and the team breakdown the debate, and what the RNC might need to change going forward to fix things. And as always, we dive into some news from the Kentucky Governor race as Beshear releases another controversial ad - with some misleading (read: false) information. Taylor Katherine is a singer/songwriter from Louisville, Kentucky. She is a classically trained vocalist, who studied at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky. She was also selected to be a participant in the 2008 Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts in vocal music. A Frankfort, Kentucky native, Taylor moved to Louisville in 2018. Shortly after, she became enriched by the local music community, and started to sing at open mics. A few months into that, the world shut down due to the pandemic and she lost her service industry job. During this time, Taylor learned how to play her ukulele and began writing her own songs. Now, she has played at venues all around Louisville, and is penned to play at several festivals across the region in the coming year. Her songs make the harsh realities of life both palatable and relatable, with a voice like "honey on a gravel road". Taylor says the highlight of her music career thus far is when Jim James (My Morning Jacket) said she was "real f@&*in' good" at a Louisville show recently. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

Please note there is some language in this episode. The one good thing that has come out of the pandemic (for me) is that I have been given the opportunity to expand my acting community outside of my physical location.  I have taken classes at the BGB Studios in LA and have joined the Arvold Warner Studios membership in Atlanta.  This means I get to talk to even more people about craft.  Today I asked Ashley Rideaux from BGB and Ellie Clark and Evan Bergman of the Arvold Warner Studios to talk to me about the Meisner Repetition exercise. So many classes include repetition as part of the class, even if they don't include any of the other Meisner activities, that I wanted to know why.  The basic premise of the Repetition exercise is that you are focusing on the behavior of your scene partner and not focused on the words you are saying.  The words are essentially unimportant.  “It's an exercise in subtext. What we're saying isn't what matters. Ashley, Ellie, and Evan all talk about the importance of speaking your truth and putting your attention on the other person.  As Evan says, “When you put your attention on the other person, they become more important than your discomfort.” Ashley points out that the exercise is a way to prevent you from planning a map for yourself in the scene. She says, “If you can't bring truth and yourself to what it is you're offering in a scene then nobody cares…You've got to show up and be a real actualized human engaging with another person.” For her the repetition exercise helps you achieve that.  For Ellie, “it is setting you up to actually get to the art of doing and crafting and specificity.” I hope you enjoy my conversation with these wonderful teaching artists as much as I did. After graduating from SMU's Meadows School of the Arts with a BFA in Acting, Ashley did what some would call the impossible, and supported herself for years performing on regional theatre stages across the country. A few of her favorite roles include the titular role in ANTIGONE, Paulina from THE WINTER'S TALE, Ruth Younger in A RAISIN IN THE SUN, and Malcolm (among several other characters) in a six-person, all-female cast of MACBETH. Since moving to Los Angeles, she has appeared in numerous national commercials, indie projects, Annapurna Interactive‘s live action video game, TELLING LIES, THE AFFAIR, and most recently 9-1-1 and AMERICAN CRIME STORY: IMPEACHMENT. Currently she is wearing the hat of producer, writer, and content creator, and had her first digital series optioned a few years ago. Ashley is a champion of diversity, truth, and finding strength through vulnerability. When she's not acting, writing, or producing, you can find her teaching yoga, meditation, pranayama, philosophy classes, teacher trainings, workshops, and retreats all over the world. Find out more about Ashley RideauxThe BGB Studios: https://www.bramongarciabraun.com/bgb-teachers/ashley-rideauxIG: @ashleyrideauxhttps://www.yoga-with-ashley.com/blank-mpvle Ellie Clark is an Atlanta-based actress and teaching artist.
