Episode 94 Bio: https://www.maycobb.com/ My upcoming thriller, MY SUMMER DARLINGS will be released from Berkley/Penguin Random House on May 17th, 2022. My previous thriller, THE HUNTING WIVES, is now available everyone where books are sold! My debut thriller, BIG WOODS, won multiple awards and was released summer 2018. I'm currently finishing a book about the late, jazz great, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a project which has been in the works for twenty years. Kirk was a human phenomenon—a multi-instrumentalist who was best known for his miraculous ability to play three saxophones simultaneously. During his brief life, he defied staggering odds—from blindness, to prejudice, to a paralyzing stroke—in order to play the music that came to him through dreams. His story is what made me want to become a writer. I grew up in the piney woods of East Texas where both THE HUNTING WIVES and BIG WOODS are set. After college, I moved to San Francisco where I studied Victorian Literature for my Master's, and gravitated towards that era's detective novels, known as "sensation novels", such as Wilke Collins' THE WOMAN IN WHITE. I then lived in Los Angeles for a few years where I worked for filmmaker/writer Ron Shelton and his wife, the actress Lolita Davidovich. I currently live in Austin, Texas, with my husband and son where we enjoy traipsing around the area's many beautiful parks. I also enjoy napping, staring into space, making to-do lists for my to-do lists, shoveling cookies down my throat when I'm writing a particularly difficult scene (and even when I'm not), wearing my PJ's as often as I can get away with and collapsing into bed at the end of a day with a great book. She studied English literature and American history at the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor's degree, before moving to New York City to work in the magazine business. She was a staff editor at Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Good Housekeeping and InStyle. In 2010 she sold her first novel, The Crown, to the Touchstone imprint of Simon & Schuster. A thriller set in Tudor England, it was an Oprah magazine pick and nominated for the Crime Writers Association's Ellis Peters Historical Dagger Award. She wrote two more books featuring the same main character, a Dominican novice named Joanna Stafford. With her fourth novel, a standalone thriller set in the 18th century art world titled The Blue, she told a story of espionage and obsession with the most beautiful color in the world. In creating Genevieve, the Huguenot artist who goes undercover in a porcelain factor, she drew on her own background. Nancy is descended French Huguenot Pierre Billiou, who came to what was then New Amsterdam in 1665 and built a stone house on Staten Island. It's the third oldest house in New York State. Nancy is now turning her writing talent to creating novels set in the New York City of the past. For her fifth novel, Dreamland, she spent time in Coney Island and was assisted by the staff at the Coney Island Museum. She also did research at the New York Public Library, the New York Historical Society, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Brooklyn Historical Society. Her novella, The Ghost of Madison Avenue, is also set in the New York City of the 1910s, with an Irish American widow who solves a mystery at J.P. Morgan's sumptuous private library. J.C. Paulson thinks a mystery can — perhaps should — also be a love story. Switching from fact (journalism) to fiction, it seemed a natural thing to combine the two. Evil versus good. Hate versus love. Think Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane, and a host of cozy mystery couples — not that her first four novels, Adam's Witness, Broken Through, Fire Lake and Griffin's Cure, are all that cozy. A rabid reader of mystery novels, J.C. Paulson has long admired the works of Dorothy Sayers, P.D. James, Louise Penny and Ann Cleeves. She lives in a rambling bungalow on a quiet street in Saskatoon, Canada with her husband, Ken, a goldsmith. https://www.edwin-hill.com/ Edwin is the Edgar- and Agatha-award nominated author of three novels in the Hester Thursby series: Little Comfort, The Missing Ones, and Watch Her. He was born in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and spent most of his childhood obsessing over The Famous Five, Agatha Christie, and somehow finding a way into C.S. Lewis's wardrobe. His parents were fond of taking his sister and him on month-long family camping trips across the U.S. and Canada, and one of his best memories is of finishing a copy of The Seven Dials Mystery while the rest of the family visited Mount Rushmore. Growing up when VHS tapes were new meant that watching Alien, Jaws, The Shining, or Halloween whenever he wanted seemed luxurious, and still does today. Like Hester Thursby, he watched these movies – and others like them – a lot. After attending Wesleyan University and graduating with a B.A. in American Studies, he headed west to San Francisco for the dotcom boom. Later, he returned to Boston, earned an MFA from Emerson College, and switched gears to work in educational publishing. He served as the vice president and editorial director for Bedford/St. Martin's, a division of Macmillan Learning for many years before turning to writing full time. He lives in Roslindale, Massachusetts with his partner Michael and his favorite reviewer, their lab Edith Ann, who likes his first drafts enough to eat them. A lot of people helped him create this series, and he is a big believer in paying forward. Don't be a stranger. Bio: A graduate of Florida State University, I presently reside in Atlanta Georgia with my partner. By day, I serve as Vice President of Easter Seals North Georgia, Inc., a non-profit organization strengthening children and their families at the most critical times in their development. Through my non-profit work, I am a champion for early childhood literacy. In all the hours between, I write. Raised alongside three feral, younger brothers in the rash-inducing, subtropical climate of Cairo Georgia, I am a lifelong resident of the South. A circumstance, no doubt, leaving an indelible mark upon my voice as a writer. Aside from sense of place, my writing is influenced and inspired by the literary work of others. As a boy, it was with great obsession, I turned the well-worn pages of Charlotte Brontë's, Jane Eyre. Wuthering Heights? Yes, another source of adoration. And Truman Capote's debut novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, I admire with equal reverence along with everything ever written by Tennessee Williams. Charles Dickens' Miss Havisham is one of my all-time favorite characters. Many hours I spent playing her, wrapped in an old lace tablecloth borrowed from my mother's linen closet—my tattered, makeshift wedding dress. Locked away in my boyhood room, I haunted the place, plotting revenge, shooing rats from the wedding cake. “Break their hearts my pride and hope, break their hearts and have no mercy,” I would whisper into the impressionable ear of my lovely Estella. Break their hearts. As an adult, my literary palate is diverse, reading everyone from the sublime Michael Cunningham to the gifted Jesmyn Ward to the incomparable Ron Rash. Though my tastes have evolved through the years, one constant remains: the impact of literature and art and music upon my writing. And my unrelenting quest to make and find beauty in this world. https://robertlgwaltney.com VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. CJ Cooke, also known as Carolyn Jess-Cooke, grew up on a council estate in Belfast, Northern Ireland, at the height of the Troubles. She started writing at the age of 7 and pestered publishers for many years with manuscripts typed on her grandparents' old typewriter and cover notes written on pages ripped from school jotters. Since then, she has published 12 works in 23 languages and won numerous awards, including an Eric Gregory Award from the Society of Authors, a Tyrone Guthrie Prize, a K Blundell Award, and she has won a Northern Writer's Award three times. In 2011, her debut novel, The Guardian Angel's Journal, was published by Little, Brown. The novel was an international bestseller. Her second novel, The Boy Who Could See Demons (2012), is a cult classic. Her sixth novel, The Lighthouse Witches, was published in October 2021, and was an Indigo Book of the Month and an international bestseller. CJ's work is concerned with trauma, motherhood, loss, and social justice. CJ holds a BA (Hons), MA, and PhD from Queen's University, Belfast, and commenced her academic career in 2005 as a Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Sunderland. Shortly thereafter, she published four academic works in swift succession on Shakespearean Cinema and Film Sequels, before establishing her career as a poet, editor, and novelist. Now Reader in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow, CJ convenes the prestigious MLitt Creative Writing and researches ways that creative writing can help with trauma and mental health. Throughout 2013-18 she directed the Writing Motherhood project, which explored the impact of motherhood on women's writing. She is also the founder and director of the Stay-at-Home! Literary Festival, which is dedicated to providing people with accessible, inclusive, and eco-friendly ways to access literature. CJ has four children and lives with her family in Glasgow, Scotland. https://carolynjesscooke.com/ VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. https://www.jennyholiday.com/ Twitter: @jennyholi Instagram: @holymolyjennyholi Facebook reader group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/northernheat/ Jenny Holiday is a USA Today-bestselling and RITA®-nominated author whose books have been featured in The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, The Washington Post, and National Public Radio. She grew up in Minnesota and started writing at age nine when her fourth-grade teacher gave her a notebook to fill with stories. After college, Jenny moved to Toronto, Canada, for grad school. After picking up a PhD in urban geography, she became a professional writer. Her favorite and longest gig was promoting research at a major university, which allowed her to become an armchair astronomer/historian/particle physicist, depending on the day. After a decade of that, she decided to try her hand again at happy endings—minus the bloodbaths. “How hard can it be?” she thought? Ha. Ha ha ha ha ha. Ha. Yeah, turns out it was super hard. But after lots of rejection and an embarrassingly bad manuscript in which the hero and heroine, if one could judge by their wild and unmotivated emotional swings, clearly had personality disorders, she finally started to get the hang of it. She has published contemporary, historical, and new adult romance novels featuring both straight and gay characters, with recent works including the 49th Floor series, the New Wave Newsroom series, and cozy contemporaries including Matchmaker Bay and Mermaid Inn. Her new release, Duke, Actually, is the sequel to her 2020 novel, A Princess for Christmas. When she's not working on her next book, she likes to hang out with her family, watch other people sing karaoke, and throw theme parties. A member of the House of Slytherin, Jenny lives in London, Ontario, Canada. SHOW: This LIVE podcast brings you interviews with trending authors in Science Fiction, Fantasy, Speculative Fiction, and Romance. If that sounds like an odd combination, blame the host. A red shirt in a browncoat, Allison Martine (“A.M.”) Hubbard was busy writing speculative fiction when she tripped and fell in the hot tub. Now, she writes romance, too. This master of bad analogies, mixed metaphors, and poorly translated Latin, (which she vaguely recalls from her years as an attorney), has a penchant for bourbon, wonderfully weird books, and throwing tropes out the window. https://afictionalhubbard.com/ #allisonmartinehubbard #allisonmartine #Jennyholiday #tothemoonallison #authorsontheair #authorsontheairglobalradionetwork #interview #podcast #writing #books #APrincessforChristmas @copyright by authors on the air global radio network
