Ep. 227 Changing How We Talk About Aging, Caregiving

Polly Campbell, Simply Said

What Happens if We Change the Way We Think About Aging and Caregiving? How we think and talk about getting older changes how we experience aging and care for those we love. Too often the narrative focuses on the negative aspects of aging. Caregiving and care receiving are seen as a burden or problem when loved ones who need our help can still live a life of meaning and engagement and so can their caregivers. Caregiving can be stressful but also a love-filled, interesting time, says gerontologist Dr. Sarah Teten Kanter, but that all depends on how we think of it. When we focus on positive emotions like awe, gratitude, empathy, forgiveness, and love we can change the caregiving and aging experience, she says. "Aging is not a problem to be resolved," Teten Kanter says. "The narratives around caregiving and aging in America are often once sided and talk about the caregiver and the caregiver burden and all the things that go along with adapting to that. But there are many things to enjoy and many experiences to be had even with the challenges that come with aging and caring for the loved one. "With the right tools and the right mindset we can create an opportunity to deepen our relationships and for our own growth wisdom and resilience for a lifetime." Focus: identifying a predictable step to take in order to achieve a desirable outcome of our choosing. Sacred Halt's come and change our identities. Period. We could stop this right here: We Change! What once was; is no more... as it had always been, before our Sacred Halt's. We have an subconscious incapability to identify this new identity within ourselves upon a Sacred Halt. This process takes time. And, by 'takes time' I mean: there AIN'T no predicted process to our individual journey's. "All things have passed away, and all things have become new." As I attempt to focus and identify my premises of this writing and creative process, and learn the use of multi-media platforms, I must be forgiving of this part inside of myself of which no one may know... except me. And, I must be kind to myself. I have changed multiple times within my lifetime now; I have changed multiple times within every Sacred Halt I've been mandated to endure. I KNOW my physical person is aging. I see her getting old, grey and wrinkles forming. I know my physical endurance has changed. I know my priority of what my physical appearance must be has changed. AND... ...now... I must know my 'insides'; my emotional; my spiritual and my mental person's, have changed as well. Now... I must understand THIS person of which no one may see other than myself; I must allow her the time and support of herself to herself to... succeed at her own pace; to succeed at her own rhythm to her life. Today, for you, I give you time. Time to form understanding; time to form your new recognition of your new identity upon, during and after the Sacred Halt's this life has given. I know you know. I know, you know, I know that we know: We. Got. This. We got this... in our own individual time frames. Welcome to Sacred Halt. Allow. Encourage. Embrace. Learn to accept. Take your fuck*n time as long as you need! I'll see you tomorrow!

Have you been at the beach or in a parking lot and noticed those Y-shaped green plastic pieces on the ground? Have you wondered what they are? Don't get grossed out, but they are used flossers! Created as a convenience item for people to “floss on the go,” they often end up littering our shorelines, parks and public areas. It makes one think that we're not being very responsible to our planet.Too many items like these flossers are designed for single use, and end up in our area landfills, or worse, littering our lives. It is amazing how much waste is generated each year. In 2018 alone, more than 292.4 million tons of materials and products were discarded, reported an Environmental Protection Agency study. Broken down by materials, paper/paperboard topped the list at 23.1%, followed by food, plastics, yard trimmings, metals, wood, textiles, and glass.A 2021 story in the Washington Post claimed that one third of all the food in the U.S. gets wasted, and that fixing that problem could help fight climate change. “About $408 billion worth of food, grown on 18 percent of U.S. farmland with 4 trillion tons of water, never make sit to someone's stomach.” And that “the carbon footprint of U.S. food waste is greater than that of the airline industry—accounting for about 8 percent of all greenhouse emissions.”“When food rots in a landfill, it produces huge amounts of methane—a greenhouse gas at least 28 times as potent as carbon dioxide,” the author said. “But in compost bins, microbes convert that organic matter into nutrient-rich soil, keeping the carbon out of the atmosphere and producing valuable fertilizer.”How do We Change to Be More Responsible to our Planet? One of the best, and easiest, ways to reduce waste is to look for alternatives to single-use products. Grab cups or glasses for water instead of buying bottled water, take a reusable grocery bag to the store, or use washable cloths for cleaning.Think of the “three Rs” when making your choices: Reduce, Reuse or Recycle. How can you reduce the amount of waste you produce? Choose items with minimal packaging or lessen the quantity of food you discard by purchasing less or making better food choices, and composting what you can. Opt for glass plates and cloth napkins over disposables. Recycle perfectly-good items back into the community by donating them to charities with stores. This not only keeps items out of landfills, it helps to raise money for community-based causes. Support this reuse by shopping at thrift stores—you'll get a great product and a bargain.Becoming more responsible to our planet is a matter of making better and informed choices. Start by making little changes, like recycling, or bringing reusable bags to the grocery store. Don't purchase large amounts of food at each visit. Make a meal plan instead. Package your food or lunch in reusable containers. Instead of tossing out damaged items, fix them instead. And stop littering. These are all small changes that can make a big impact.Related: 9 Simple Ways to Reduce Waste in Your HomeAs a medical practitioner, Dr. Liliana Calkins is dedicated to the health and well-being of her patients. While in lockdown, Betina, a young woman in São Paulo, Brazil, stays busy cooking and working. She tries to stay calm by meditating. But Betina, who identifies as a lesbian, faces another challenge. Her parents are homophobic, she said, and she doesn't feel comfortable being herself while working from home because of the pandemic. “My parents make sure I know they are not OK with my ‘choices' every day. And being a lesbian made them so disappointed in me that no matter what I do, it's never enough,” said Betina, who asked that her surname not be used to protect her identity. “I feel like I'm watching my life go by through somebody else's eyes — because I'm not who they want me to be, but I also can't be myself when I'm in their house.”Betina is not alone. Many people who identify as LGBTQ are experiencing lockdown differently than their heterosexual peers — especially those stuck in homophobic homes. And LGBTQ organizations around the world are seeing significant upticks in calls for help.  Related: COVID-19: The latest from The WorldSwitchboard, the UK's leading LGBT+ helpline, says it's receiving 20% more calls, emails and instant messages than they did before the pandemic — and those numbers continue to rise.“It's really, really staggering,” said Natasha Walker, Switchboard's co-chair. “I know we've spoken to people who've come out to their family as transgender or who've come out to their family as homosexual and the parents aren't dealing with that very well. The kids of Tree Hill have grown up, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that things have changed. Things have a way of being cyclical in Tree Hill (See Lost Relatives, Love Triangles and Psycho Stalkers) so it’s no surprise that season 5 ended in such a way that everything old can be new again. This year it’s all about dreams for our crew, as old dreams become new again and new dreams spring from old ones. There’s lost relatives, bad parents, tragedies, heart breaks, new loves, weddings and psychos. Sure, this small town has definitely been upgraded to feature some pretty glam people and there is no denying the soap opera that season 6 becomes (Stay Out Of It, Nick Lachey!) but no matter how many dogs sit around in waiting rooms or celebrity cameos we get, there’s something we can all relate to here; dreaming that we are meant to do great things and giving in to love. In this episode, Lobsterbird {Sophia Remolde} returns to Crestone, Colorado where she teaches us that getting lost can actually help us find something—a surrender to the power of the Universe and the energy that pervades all things, an energy which is around and within each and every one of us. Your Travelogue Sophia has traveled the world for over a decade to understand what this world is about. She has studied energy and perception as well as creativity. She has collaborated with scientists and studied in psychology. She has studied premier coaches and has been coached herself by a business coach with a spiritual and metaphysical edge. Her conclusion: Reality is not solid. [12:36] The ego is not very creative. It can’t imagine where new portals can take us. Trust your intuition and tap into what you want. You can change your own life and change the world. [27:45] Case in point: Since our first episode, Sophia has published a book, developed her own healing practice and led a group on a virtual pilgrimage. Her personal specialty is “wormhole” coaching: how to break apart A>B>C linear time, bending the space between point A and C to bypass point B at warp speed. [34:14] What reality is really like: Everything is happening in this moment. There is no future. There is no past. We {and this podcast} are not stuck in this false representation of a reality that does not exist. The material world is shifting. We can embrace this fundamental change—and change the world.
