What You Do…Is Who You Are. Words are empty and meaningless when not backed by authentic actions. Practice what you preach; do as you say, walk the talk, and actions speak louder than words are all ways to say that Your Behavior Never Lies! The disconnect between what people say versus what they actually do steals your joy, trust, happiness. It will sends mixed messages and tells others that your reality is distorted. When you do not walk the talk, you undermine communication, and creates doubt for others which circles back and creates self-doubt. It will create a negative circle of life. You really dont want that. The opportunity is to balance our words with our actions. When we can not be our word, we must renegotate agreements. When what we say and what we do are not in alignment, all parties involved will feel confusion, frustration and disappointment. Words may attempt to explain, but behavior defines the real message you are sending. In reading What You Do Is Who You Are by Ben Horowitz, he has entire sections dedicated to historical happenings and societies that serve as guiding principles that generally give amazing insight on what it takes to create successful cultures...  The ancient Samurai who were prominent in Japanese culture from the 12th to mid 19th century had a reverence about them that was second to none. The Samurai carried an unwavering loyalty and respect and took an oath that directly held them accountable to their actions... I will never fall behind others. I will always be ready to serve my lord. I will always honor my parents. I will serve compassionately for the benefit of others.  As much as I love the Samurai oath, there is one piece of Samurai wisdom that trumps all others and I believe to be the most savage sage knowledge & truth we should all be able to digest, meditate upon, and then virtuously implement into our lives...  “The extent of one's courage or cowardness cannot be measured in ordinary times... All is revealed when something happens.” Hot Damn!!!! That's IT...  It's easy to be courageous during the fantasyland times... It's easy to say and do all the right things when life is composed of roses, fairies and unicorns. Yet who are we when life becomes difficult and showered with strife? Who are we when shit hits the fan, sprays everyone in the room and then all of the fingers point at us proclaiming it's our fault... Will we be courageous or cowardly?  It's a choice and the only time we will ever get the true answer is when shit happens.

Recently read a fantastic book called What You Do Is Who You Are written by Silicon Valley icon Ben Horowitz... Early in the book, Horowitz brings up the difference between virtues and values, stating that virtues dictate our actions while values dictate our beliefs... Sure, it's easy to make the argument that they cohesively work together and your values will directly influence and impact your virtues... In a perfect world, this definitely would be the case, but the reality is that the world is far from perfect and as much as we would like to believe our virtues and values perfectly align, that's not always the scenario. “What are you trying to say, Byrnes?!?! I work really hard and my work is what is going to bring me to the next level in my life... I expect to be promoted because I am a great listener and empathetic to those around me... I am a leader because I lead by example with my attitude of gratitude and relentless work ethic.” Hey it's Sammy SuperSoft!!!! Look Sammy, you are making progress and your values have come a long way... You know what the right thing to do is and every now and again you even do it!  Yet the reality of the situation is that as much as you like to believe that you work hard, your effort is piss poor at best. Going to the gym is great but standing around trying to pick up chicks when you should be hammering out squats isn't. You think you are a great listener and empathetic but the truth is that your actions say otherwise... When little Billy came to you asking for some hitting advice you told him he swings a wet newspaper, is an embarrassment to the game and should give up the sport.
