Truth in Learning: in Search of Something! Anything!! Anybody?

Matt and Clark are so happy to have our dear friend and colleague, Elham Arabi join for the episode. In this show, we explore the nuance, and sometimes vague aspects, of culturally responsive learning and how that intricately ties to research and practice. In other words, what are the business cultural facets that affect learning initiatives. What norms, standards, values, and political schema all have impacts?Matt shamelessly references his own model for why stakeholders say no... (1) They don't buy the premise-- they don't accept the problem as stated. (2) They don't buy the solution. They accept the problem as stated, but not the solution you offer. (3) Or, they accept the problem AND the solution as offered, but don't like or trust you to deliver it.Elham referenced Adam Grant's book Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know. If you want to watch the debate between Clark and Will, you will have to join LDA at the platinum level to access the video here: https://ldaccelerator.com/joinMatt references Self-Determination Theory (SDT). SDT is a widely research theory for how people are motivated. The premise is that all humans have three basis psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness). When those needs are met, one is more likely to be intrinsically motivated toward a task. When they are undermined, one is like to be more extrinsically motivated, or not motivated at all. The theory was initially devised and studied by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan while they were at the University of Rochester. Back in 2009, Netflix Talent Officer Patty McCord and CEO Reed Hastings published a presentation called the "Netflix Culture Deck". This 125 page deck, now has over 20 Million views and created quite a buzz in the HR and tech world for its radical ideas that countered typical corporate culture such as vacation policy that equated to "take some", a "do what you think is best for the company" expense policy, and mindset that "adequate performance will get a generous severance." And that's where it started. Erin Meyer, my guest on today's show, read that deck and found herself startled, confused, and curious. There has never before been a company like Netflix. It has led nothing short of a revolution in the entertainment industries having to reinvent itself over and over again. How have these counterintuitive and radical management principles made such unprecedented flexibility possible? Erin is an author and a professor at INSEAD, one of the world's leading international business schools. I ran into her work several years ago when I read her book, The Culture Map: Breaking Through the Invisible Boundaries of Global Business. Her work has appeared in the Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, and Forbes. She's been noted as one of the 50 most influential business thinkers in the world by Thinkers50. Today we're talking about her latest book, NO RULES RULES: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with past and current Netflix employees, among others, our conversation explores high performance teams and how we can apply their culture into our own lives.  Some topics we dig into: Hard work is irrelevant. Excellence isn't just about hard work, if someone is a pain to work with (or be around) it can impact everyone. The benefits of candor and a culture of feedback. Giving others freedom to make the biggest decisions gives them fuel to succeed. And so much more. Enjoy! Have a question? “Looking back at it now, there's a time and place to be aggressive, but it often makes sense to slow down a little bit.” – Doug Hart Today my guest is Douglas Hart, Vice President International at Terminix and President, ServiceMaster Canada. I enjoyed Doug's straight-shooting approach and practical nature. No leadership platitudes here, just real-world advice from a leader in the trenches. Doug and I go back many moons, having competed in various tennis tournaments as kids.  Was great to hear about his career and catch up after 25+ years.  The power of podcasting! In this episode, you'll learn: - How slowing down can help you accelerate your long-term performance as a new leader, - Why changing your leadership style may not be the right move in a crisis, - What approach worked effectively for Doug this year, and how you can leverage it, - What surprised him most about 2020 so far... - and a lot more! If you find this episode valuable, please subscribe and rate us on Apple Podcasts! Move towards the same vision I went from being a marketer to hiring 14 people from different disciplines. It was my first experience in leading teams. I didn't have a ton of experience in some of their functional areas, but I definitely discovered early on that you have to trust people in their ability to do their functional position, provided I'm guiding and coaching, but to get everybody aligned to the same objective and the same vision – I think that's critical. That's probably the first real lesson I learned in leadership. Slow down a little bit When you're a young and ambitious leader and you're highly motivated, you want results, one of the things you can do is sometimes not include people the way that you should. I had opportunities to leverage more functional expertise and peple with more experience than me, and in fear of slowing me down in terms of trying to find consensus, I potentially at times did not seek that alignment and just went forward. Looking back at it now, there's a time and place to be aggressive, but it often makes sense to slow down a little bit. You'll still get there, you'll still be highly successful, but bring in all those resources and get alignment – you'll be much better off for it in the long run. A New Hybrid I'm of the feeling that I think there's been learnings here that not everybody needs to go to the office every day, for full business hours. I think that's not a necessity any longer. We are likely going to move to a hybrid solution where we will actually move to a smaller office footprint and figure out how that looks like. We will also give people flexibility to work from home. I don't think my leadership style has really changed, but I do enjoy and I do miss having at least some degree of working together in person. Some of these water cooler conversations, or just bantering around the office – those build relationships. Post-pandemic, we're going to have a new hybrid. It's going to be somewhere in between the old and the new. David and Mary Sherwin work with design teams in for-profit and nonprofit organizations via their consulting business, Ask The Sherwins, LLC. They’re also professors at the Pacific College of Art in the Design and Collaboration Program. In this episode, we go deep into designing teams, consider more effective ways to teach design and teams, and ways to make teams work when working remotely with Dawan Stanford, your podcast host. Show Summary David's background is in engineering and liberal arts. He graduated with an English degree, but had a side hustle doing graphic design. That’s where he discovered an interest in design. Much of his early design learning and education was accomplished by apprenticing at various design studios Then, he shifted into product and service design, and he worked in product development for some large software organizations.  Mary started in organizational development and content strategy, and then moved into teaching within the design discipline. Much of Mary's experience had been working with designers. Most of David's experience was from a designer's standpoint, working with people like Mary. Mary and David realized that the work they were doing on their respective paths had a lot of synergy and that they each held half of the solution. They started teaching together seven years ago. Three years after that, they founded their company after students in a special graduate-level teamwork class told them they should start their own business, because this was something companies wanted their employees to learn.  Since starting  Ask The Sherwins, Mary and David have discovered and developed the nuances of developing strong, well-functioning teams. From facilitating your new team at the start of the design process, to what to do when your team feels like it's falling apart, to working through cultural differences, Mary and David have robust processes for all of these team challenges. They discuss their management style, team-building exercises, and team maintenance practices on team design. Listen in to learn Why Mary and David’s ability to “professionally disagree” gives them an advantage when working with design clients Why their two different career paths gives two different perspectives on the design process About cultural biases, assumptions, and their role in design solutions Why Mary and David encourage students and professors to teach and learn from each other Advice on how to start your team Mary and David’s team facilitation process during their first meeting Team word tools to use when the team situation gets difficult When you should use behavioral questioning Our Guests’ Bio David and Mary Sherwin are co-founders of Ask The Sherwins, LLC, a consulting and training firm that helps design organizations develop the capabilities they need for better product design and stronger cross-functional teamwork.
