Voices of Search // A Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & Content Marketing Podcast
Will Critchlow, CEO of Searchpilot, discusses the concept of SEO depreciation, likening it to the financial concept of an asset losing value over time. He argues that most mature websites would see a 10-20% annual decline in organic search traffic if no maintenance efforts were made. Critchlow emphasizes the importance of viewing SEO as an investment rather than an expense, and suggests involving business leaders in forecasting and scenario planning to better communicate SEO's value. He also highlights the need for SEO professionals to adapt to changes in algorithms and market conditions to maintain and enhance their organic search visibility. He emphasizes the importance of communicating SEO's value to leadership using metrics they understand, such as ROI and performance channels. In an increasingly difficult economy, do you know how to prove the value of your SEO and remain efficient, while maintaining the SEO budgets you need to succeed? Will Critchlow, CEO of SearchPilot, joins me on the SEJShow to examine actionable strategies to doing more with less and maintaining the freedom to test, all while proving the positive impacts of your SEO work. Using insights from marketing leaders, SEO specialists, and senior executives, you'll hear Will and Loren break down the skills you need to keep your CFO happy while driving efficiency. If you've found yourself having to defend your budget, pitch harder than ever, and work more to prove your results, then you won't want to miss this episode. There's more pressure on ROI calculations, there's more scrutiny on all of those decisions. SEOs are often shy of taking on targets, quotas, goals and so forth. But even forecasting is something that I think the industry is too naive about. –Will Critchlow, 06:04 Big companies are spending tons of money on this stuff. The fact that you are out there asking for a quarter of a million dollars, half a million dollars, whatever it might be, that's actually totally achievable. –Will Critchlow, 09:38 Speaking of the funnel, we all know that SEO is not a direct response marketing technique. It's not search keyword, find site buy done. There's all kinds of touch points throughout the funnel, multi-touch attribution, which is massive. –Loren Baker, 16:16 [00:00] - Will's background and expertise.[08:44] - Integration challenges in long-term planning.[12:30] - The importance of planning when dealing with CFOs.[13:18] - Tracking multiple attribution points.[16:16] - Google algorithm updates and their impact on forecasting.[21:05] - Forecasting challenges influenced by various factors.[23:32] - Beta testing's effects on search results.[26:41] - The evolving impact of AI-powered tools on search queries.[29:28] - Strategies for SEO teams to improve forecasting. Resources Mentioned: SearchPilot www.searchpilot.com Intro to SEO testing [PDF] Get on the email list to get new SEO test results in your inbox SEO as a product discipline is something that we are seeing. And what that often means is squads of product managers, engineers, designers, all aligned to that objective. –Will Critchlow, 13:18 I think almost every SEO is testing beta testing, Google, SGE, and we have in our heads that when that query is done, everything's going to be pushed down. There's going to be an article, there's going to be this, there's going to be that, but we tend to forget that we're the ones beta testing it, right? –Loren Baker, 23:07 And so the other reason that I'm bullish on there being organic links is I think there have to be ad links because I don't think Google is going to turn off 98% of their revenue overnight. And I think they're not going to go with only ad links because I think that's a degraded user experience. So I think there's going to be a combination of advertising links and organic links, and our job is to win the organic just as it always has been. –Will Critchlow, 27:37 Connect with Will Critchlow: Will Critchlow is the founder and CEO of SearchPilot, a company dedicated to simplifying and improving SEO testing processes for large websites. He co-founded the SEO agency Distilled in 2005 and played a key role in expanding its services and the SearchLove conference series to the US, establishing offices in Seattle and New York. In February 2020, he spun out SearchPilot as an independent business while Distilled was acquired by Brainlabs. Will Critchlow, CEO of SearchPilot, discusses a full series on SEO testing. Paid search teams are accustomed to receiving six-figure annual budgets, while SEO has historically been an underinvested channel. This tendency can be attributed to SEOs being unable to answer questions from senior management but SEO testing can help SEO teams to build those business cases. Will Critchlow, CEO of SearchPilot, discusses a full series on SEO testing. With AdWords and conversion rate tests, you can test two different landing pages by sending half your users to one and half of the users to another. That approach is not applicable to SEO, but you still have to be able to prove its value and impact on revenue, and that's where SEO testing comes in. Will Critchlow, founder and CEO of SearchPilot https://www.searchpilot.com/ @willcritchlow My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Will Critchlow, CEO at SearchPilot and SEO Partner at Brainlabs. Will is one of the most famous SEO presenters in the world. His content is ubiquitous on blogs, webinars, and at industry conferences. Will co-founded Distilled in 2005 with Duncan Morris. Distilled became an iconic brand in SEO, winning numerous industry awards. Will and the team at Distilled started the conference series SearchLove, one of the most popular search marketing conferences with events held in London, San Diego, and New York. Earlier this year, Distilled's consulting services were acquired by BrainLabs. I'm going to start our conversation by talking about what it was like to go through an acquisition. His new project, SearchPilot, was originally software Distilled used to help their clients. Now they've developed a really interesting way for SEOs to do A/B tests. A/B testing is popular in Conversion Rate Optimization and Paid Media, but not as much in SEO. I'm going to ask him about some of the findings from the A/B tests he and the team at SearchPilot have performed. Will and Distilled have had an amazing relationship with Moz and Moz's co-founder Rand Fishkin that I've followed from afar. We talk about how building genuine relationships rather than transactional relationships was a key to Distilled's rapid growth. Grab a beer and join me for a conversation with Will Critchlow one of the most important voices in SEO. We'll talk about how the industry has evolved over his 15-year career, how to do a proper a/b test in SEO, we'll talk about his love for basketball and what he learned from having his children perform a handful of searches on Google. Will Critchlow, who has recently sold Distilled, the international SEO consultancy that he co-founded discusses how he developed the brand in response to the needs of the business as it grew. They looked at what the whole organisation stood for, and what was their meaning in the marketplace as it helped them recruit the right people. ● Post the sale of Distilled, Will retains Search Pilot, an SaaS product the business had developed.● Helping his father in his electronics business influenced Will's entrepreneurial leanings as he saw the time and freedom setting up his own business gave his father.● Brand came late in their journey. Reputation came first, then looking at what the organisation stood for later.● Used their company values to hire and promote members of the team they developed a checklist to evaluate candidates against their core values.● Built a training platform Distilled U both as an internal resource and as digital asset with a subscription service● Most admired brand is Wistia run by some good friends of his. Split testing is typically a term bandied about in the CRO world, not the SEO world. In this episode, you're going to learn how to split test SEO. Running tests in parallel is not something that's easily done with SEO. There are plenty of reasons for that. Each page has its own link profile, making it hard to do head-to-head comparisons, not to mention, you don't want to create duplicate content. The copy on the pages need to be different, too. Nevertheless, there are workarounds which you are about to learn about. My guest is Will Critchlow. He's the CEO of Distilled, a company he founded in 2005 with Duncan Morris. Distilled provides online marketing services from offices in London, New York, and Seattle, hosts the SearchLove Conference series in the US and UK, produces the popular online training platform, DistilledU, and runs the SEO testing platform, DistilledODN. Will, welcome to the show.
I speak with Will Critchlow, founder and CEO of Distilled. Will and his team have grown Distilled into a hugely reputable SEO firm. In this episode we discuss how they have done that through building their network over time, having a low entry point to their brand through DistilledU (their training site) and their global conference Search Love. There is also a lot of discussion around content marketing as well. This is a fascinating episode that touches on most parts of marketing.
