Karun is in conversation with Harry Sherrard. Karun Chandhok was born into a motor racing family where his father, grandfather and even grandmother used to race! After winning Indian and Asian championships, Karun moved to England where he was a front-runner in Formula 3, which served as a launch pad up to GP2 and then Formula 1. Karun was a test driver for the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team in 2007 and 2008, before racing in Formula 1 for Hispania Racing and Team Lotus in 2010 and 2011. He went on to compete at Le Mans and in the Formula E series. Since 2016, Karun has been a regular driver and consultant for the Williams Formula 1 team's Heritage business, showcasing their World Championship winning Formula 1 cars. He is also a Goodwood Revival regular, winning the Whitsun Trophy in the CanAM McLaren M1A in 2019. Best known today as commentator and technical analysist of the Sky Sports F1 team, Karun also sits on the Board of Motorsport UK. In 1986, the Williams Formula 1 team should have taken the World Championship, but their drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell decided to turn on each other instead. But how did the son of a Brazilian doctor become one of the most controversial names in Formula 1 history? What was it that catapulted a young Nelson Piquet into the international spotlight so soon after his first-ever go-kart race? Was the bias against him legitimate, or was it the product of a nationalistic media playing favorites? Today on Past Gas, we're delving into all things Nelson Piquet. Argentinian fans are attempting to propel Franco Colapinto into a Formula 2 seat for 2024 after he won races in FIA Formula 3 this year by convincing companies and politicans to sponsor him. He explains how his search for funding has gone, and the help he has had from the Williams Formula 1 team.
Toto Wolff is CEO and Team Principal of the Mercedes Formula 1 motor racing team. He has led the team to an unprecedented seven consecutive drivers' championships – six with Lewis Hamilton - and eight consecutive constructors' championships. He is the most successful manager in Formula 1 history, and arguably one of the most successful managers in any sport. Toto was born Torger Wolff in Vienna. When he was eight his father was diagnosed with a brain tumour and died when Toto was 15. Toto found himself looking after his mother and sister from a young age which he believes contributed to the strength of character he developed as an adult. Toto's original ambition in motorsport was to be a driver, and he started competing in his late teens. Following the deaths of drivers Ayrton Senna and then Roland Ratzenberger, his sponsor withdrew support, which forced him to give up his dream. He turned his attention to business and made a fortune as an entrepreneur. In 2009 he bought a stake in the Williams Formula 1 team and four years later bought a 30% stake in the Mercedes team. Toto is married to the former racing driver Susie Stoddart and they divide their time between the UK and Monaco. Their six-year-old son Jack is already showing an interest in karting. I get guest suggestions sent to me regularly, and this show is the result of one of those. Dave Kallmann messaged me on Twitter to suggest a few motorsports photographers, and that instantly intrigued me. Dave is a sports reporter for Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and he is one hell of a photographer himself. If he was suggesting someone then I knew I had to take a look, and man, I am so glad that I did. Jamey Price is a motorsport and automotive photographer from Charlotte, North Carolina, and he is in a league of his own. If you've watched or listened to show for any amount of time, you'll know that I spend a lot of time looking through my guest's work to try and find common threads, those things that seem to connect all of the shots together. Many photographers have these fine threads that seem to weave from image to image, a way that they tell their story that is unique to them. For Jamey it's motion. Let me explain... As a motorsports photographer, of course Jamey is photographing things in motion, and when I say motion I mean speed, but that's not the thread I am talking about. Jamey has an ability to coney to the viewer a feeling of actual motion. Through the use of panning, a creative depth of field, or a dragged shutter, Jamey makes you feel like you are along for the ride. I'm not sure if you can motion sickness from a photo, but if you can then you'd be advised to view Jamey's work carefully. I am left wondering if Jamey's early career choices played a role in the resulting images I see. Jamey was a thoroughbred steeplechase horse racing jockey and exercise rider in the United States, England and Ireland. He rode in more than 50 races, and notched 11 wins in the saddle, all the while taking photos between his races. He eventually self published a book titled "Chasing: Racing Life in England & Ireland." In 2011, Jamey's photography career path switched from horses, to horse power. Since then, his images have been published around the world in magazines, newspapers and websites including The New York Times, HotRod, Hagerty, MAXIM, Car&Driver, CycleWorld, Road&Track, Autoweek, RACER, MotorTrend, Autosport, F1 Racing magazine, Motorsport Magazine, Formula1.com, Lamborghini.com, TopGear.com, Blackbird Automotive Journal, Popular Mechanics, Sports Illustrated & ESPN and many others. Named Motorsport Photographer of the Year in 2019 by the National Motorsports Press Association, Jamey currently does freelance work supplying racing and marketing imagery to some of the most respected automotive brands, photographers, agencies and racing teams and drivers across the world including: Lamborghini & Lamborghini Squadra Corse, Ferrari, Ducati, Audi Canada, Acura, Red Bull, Ford, Bentley, Goodyear, PUMA, MOTUL, RM Sotheby's, Aston Martin Racing, Manor Racing F1 team, Force India Formula 1 team, Renault Formula 1 team, Alpine Formula 1 Team, Williams Formula 1 team, Toyota Gazoo Racing, the Macau Grand Prix and many more. Though primarily sticking to the motor racing and automotive world, Jamey has photographed a diverse range of sporting assignments from professional swimming, to the Kentucky Derby & Breeders' Cup Horse Racing World Championships, NFL games, US Women's National team soccer, and of course the fast-paced world of NASCAR, World Endurance Championship, Formula E, IMSA Weathertech Championship, NHRA, Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Indycar & the Indy 500, MotoGP, 24 hours of Le Mans, 24 hours of Nürburgring, more than 35 Formula 1 races, and a little bit of everything in between! Jamey has been the staff photographer for successful Charlotte based luxury print magazine, QC Exclusive and Discover the Carolinas since 2014 and is a sponsored LEXAR Elite Artist. Join award winning photographer, and LEXAR Elite Artist, Jamey Price and me as we peek into his world of F1 Motorsports Photography, on this Behind the Shot. Nicholas Latifi is a Canadian racing driver currently competing for Williams in Formula 1. Latifi started his motor racing career at the relatively late age of 13 in karts after trying out the local rental kart facility. After experiencing the thrill and speed of racing, it didn't take long for Nicholas to win races on the local scene before competing in larger national events both in Canada & the USA where he was victorious at the Florida Winter Tour and a front runner at the Rotax World Championships in UAE.Latifi then made the big jump from karts and settled into the Formula 3 scene in Italy where he was gaining experience on circuits he is now competing in Formula 1. Having progressed through Formula 3, Renault 3.5, Formula 2 (where he scored 6 wins), Nicholas was given the opportunity to jump into Formula 1 and race drivers he previously looked up to during his karting days. Having secured a contract for both the 2020/21 seasons, Latifi's first year in Formula 1 will be to gain experience and learn from his teammate George Russell. This interview was filmed before Nicholas' debut in F1.We appreciate the assistance of manager Steve Webb & the Williams Formula 1 team for allowing this interview to take place. If you wish to follow Nicholas' progress through the 2020 season, be sure to follow his social media channels at:FacebookInstagramIf you're new to kart racing, or want to learn more, feel free to jump into our facebook community where you can gain knowledge from 18 x Australian Karting Champion Dave Sera.

Show #665 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 13th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Oh my goodness! NEIL E ROBERTS AND LEANNE, FROM SUSSEX EVS, have increased their support! They were already EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS but that’s amazing, thank you. 400,000 GERMAN JOBS AT RISK IN SWITCH TO ELECTRIC CARS "The shift to electric vehicles could cost 410,000 jobs in Germany by 2030, daily Handelsblatt reported on Monday, citing government advisers." acccording to a Reuters report: "In engines and transmissions’ production alone, around 88,000 jobs will be at risk, the newspaper said, citing a report by the National Platform for the Future of Mobility (NPM), an advisory council for the government. Electric cars’ engines are made of fewer parts and require less maintenance than combustion engines, which will result in layoffs, the report was quoted as saying. Vehicle production will be further automated and will not be sufficient to support the current level of jobs, Handelsblatt said, citing NPM’s Chairman Henning Kagermann. In 2018, employment in the car industry in Germany reached 834,000, its highest since 1991." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-autos-emobility/more-than-400000-german-jobs-at-risk-in-switch-to-electric-cars-handelsblatt-idUSKBN1ZC0N2 VW CONFIRMS ID.3 WITH BIGGEST BATTERY SEATS ONLY FOUR "Thanks to Battery Life, we have learned a few new things about the upcoming Volkswagen ID.3, which will be handed to the first customers in Summer 2020." says INsideEVs: " Volkswagen says that it will manage to deliver cars in the Summer of 2020 and there is no change in the timingThe German manufacturer currently is producing the first batch of ID.3, which is stored on special parking lots and will be tested by the employees. Photos of such facilities were provided by the German EV rental company nextmove in its video. olkswagen has confirmed that the 1ST edition cars will be available only with single-zone climate control (the two-zone climate control will be available later). It was also confirmed that there will be no park-assist feature in the first edition cars (there are parking sensors and automatic emergency braking though). The biggest thing seems to be the news that the ID.3 will be a five-seater only in two battery versions: 45 kWh and 58 kWh, while the 77 kWh battery will be a four-seater. Moreover, the biggest battery pack can not be combined with a panoramic roof. The reason for that seems to be weight - it would be too high with the assumption of the fifth passenger." LARGEST ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS PROGRAM IN UNITED STATES LAUNCHING IN VIRGINIA From Cynthia at CleanTechnica: "Dominion Energy has partnered with local Virginia school districts to begin replacing diesel buses with 100% electric school buses in phases. No phase can come too soon, so CleanTechnica wishes all school districts a rapid rollout after the initial 50 launch the program. Children are more sensitive to air pollution than adults, and it hurts them and their studies." She writes: "The buses can be used as batteries for the grid or for electricity use off the grid as well. Dominion Energy shares, “When not in use, they can be tapped as an energy resource through vehicle-to-grid technology. If energy needs are high or if renewable resources are intermittent, the batteries can provide stability to the grid. During a power outage or emergency, the batteries could serve as mobile power stations.”1,050 electric buses could provide enough energy to power 10,000+ homes." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/12/largest-electric-school-bus-program-in-united-states-launching-in-virginia/ ASTON MARTIN REPORTEDLY KILLS RAPIDE-E ELECTRIC CAR PROGRAM "After officially launching the “production version” of its first electric car last year, Aston Martin has now reportedly killed its Rapide-E electric car program." according to electrek: "The British automaker unveiled a prototype of a Rapide converted with an all-electric drivetrain, the “Rapide E,” back in 2015. Two years later, they started working with Williams Advanced Engineering, the tech division of the Williams Formula 1 team, to make the vehicle’s electric powertrain. Last year, we saw one of the first production prototypes of the Rapide E and Aston Martin officially launched the car at the Shanghai Auto show in April 2019. Now almost a year later, the company is reportedly canceling plans to produce the vehicle and it will instead shift the program into an EV research project." https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/13/aston-martin-rapide-e-electric-car-kill-program/# UFODRIVE ADDS LONDON AND BERLIN TO TESLA RENTAL SERVICE "The electric car rental company UFODrive is expanding into further cities. The Tesla Model 3 and Model S are now available for rent at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin and at three London locations." reports electrive: "The electric vehicles are picked up and returned at fixed stations. Anyone in Berlin who wants to rent an electric car for a day can now do so at Potsdamer Platz in the “Mall of Berlin” multi-story car park. The company has entered into a partnership with APCOA for this purpose. The Tesla Model 3 is now available in the parking garage for 99 euros and the Model S for 149 euros per day. The price always includes comprehensive insurance policy and three additional drivers. In London, UFODrive will initially start with three locations (Park Lane/Marble Arch, Oxford Circus and Westfield). In order to be able to offer the vehicles at fixed stations here as well, a partnership was entered into with Q-Park, among others. For the Tesla Model 3 a price of 109 pounds per day." 2020 NISSAN LEAF STARTS AT $31,600 "Nissan has announced the pricing for the 2020 Nissan Leaf in the United States. The 2020 Leaf comes in S, SV, and SL trims. The S and SV are offered in Plus versions with larger battery packs. The SL only comes in plus version. The cheapest 2020 Nissan Leaf is the Leaf S with the 40 kWh battery pack that will sell for $31,600 plus the $925 destination charge." according to Slashgear.com: "Moving into the Plus range sees the Leaf S Plus with a 62 kWh battery starting at $38,200. Leaf SV Plus starts at $39,750, and the Leaf SL Plus costs $43,900. There are some key changes made to all 2020 Leaf models, namely Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on all models. That includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Warning Lane Departure Warning, and High Beam Assist. All Leaf models also get Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Lane Intervention, and Blind Spot Intervention for the 2020 model year." https://www.slashgear.com/2020-nissan-leaf-starts-at-31600-13606641/ TESLA MODEL 3 PRICE DROP RESULTS IN SURGE OF ORDERS IN CHINA "The spike in interest from Chinese citizens also comes after Tesla announced an over $7,000 price decrease for its Made-in-China Model 3. The strategy was used by Tesla to undercut popular local automakers and fellow premium segment rivals in China." says Teslarati: "Twitter user and Tesla enthusiast @Ray4Tesla uploaded numerous photos of the Taiguhui Tesla Experience Center in Shanghai this past weekend, showing the location filled with people looking to order their electric vehicles. Reports from local media state that hundreds of Model 3s are being ordered at each store per day and 1,200 are being ordered in China daily." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-order-surge-china-price-drop/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Which car company would you like to see doing more to embrace electrification?
