This morning we analyze a passage from an amazing work, Aish Kodesh (The Holy Fire) by Rabbi Kalonymos Shapira, the Rebbe of Piacezna. Teaching Torah in the midst of the horrors of the Holocaust, Shapira explains the meaning of suffering as a kind of sacrifice. This puts a different perspective on Yom HaZikaron, Memorial Day for Israeli Soldiers which starts this Wednesday night. We also add another layer to this day, from a sign placed by a widow on the door to her home during Shiva for her husband who fell in Gaza. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation. We take great pleasure in welcoming everyone with a warm smile, while sharing inspiration through prayer, study, and friendship. Rabbi Whitman shares his thoughts and inspirations through online lectures and shiurim, which are available on: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5FLcsC6xz5TmkirT1qObkA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adathmichael/ Podcast - Mining the Riches of the Parsha: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/mining-the-riches-of-the-parsha/id1479615142?fbclid=IwAR1c6YygRR6pvAKFvEmMGCcs0Y6hpmK8tXzPinbum8drqw2zLIo7c9SR-jc Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3hWYhCG5GR8zygw4ZNsSmO Please contact Rabbi Whitman (rabbi@adath.ca) with any questions or feedback, or to receive a daily email, "Study with Rabbi Whitman Today," with current and past insights for that day, video, and audio, all in one short email sent directly to your inbox.

Rabbanit Surale Rosen is a graduate of Matan's 5 year halacha programme and she founded their Women's Online Halachic Responsa Project. For the past 2 years she's led a new programme here at LSJS called Iyun, our highest level women's learning programme, teaching women hilchot kashrut and now hilchot brachot. She's really bringing opportunities to women in the UK that didn't exist before, and it's been a real privilege for me personally to have been able to connect our LSJS community to her. Surale's also a certified Rabbinical Arbitrator, and she teaches Midrash, Talmud and Halacha. She's invested in communal service on both local and national levels, and participates in the joint project of the UK Foreign Ministry and Search for Common Ground, in which leading Muslim and Jewish figures create a basis for religious dialogue in the Arab-Israeli conflict. We discuss access to Torah scholarship for women, and also what October 7 has meant for Surale's ongoing relationships with Muslim leaders and the different, more fundamental questions she now feels she needs to ask. Visit lsjs.ac.uk to continue learning with Joanne Greenaway and other LSJS educators.

Did this have any connection to his training as a scientist?  We also look at how the presence of IDF soldiers in Huntsville played a major part in his spiritual growth, especially the Shomer Shabbos ones. How common was it in the early 70s for an IDF officer to be shomer Shabbos? "She was a role model as a leader in the Jewish community, and who contributed so much as a former Hadassah national president." Rabbi Yochanan and Reish Lakish disagree regarding a limb that has meat on one part and one breaks a bone on the other part – is this forbidden or not? Reish Lakish says it is not and Rabbi Yochanan brings two sources that raise questions against him. Why did the rabbis decree that pigul and notar renders one’s hands impure? Would the same be true to something that was removed from the designated area that it is allowed (either outside the azara or outside the walls of Jerusalem? The gemara brings sources to answer this question but the attempts are unsuccessful. One who removes meat is not obligated unless it is placed on the ground. How do you handle a limb that was partially taken out of the walls and partially in, if you cannot break the bones? What parts of the wall, windows, doorways are considered in the walls or outside the walls?

He taught Torah his entire life as a young man sent from Germany to Gateshead Yeshiva soon after his Bar Mitzvah, as a Rav kehilla in the Bronx, and when he and my Bubby made Aliyah to Yerushalyim following retirement. He continued giving shiurim practically until his last day, on 2 Adar 5766. Teaching Torah invigorated him and he had the zechut of having chavrutot with his great grandchildren, who enjoyed every minute of learning with their Ur Zeidy. יהי זכרו ברוך." And by Pamela Kaplan, commemorating the yahrzeit of her grandmother, Debbie Kaplan, Devorah bat Noach z"l.

At the start of the virus, Rabbi Yitzi Ross, a rebbe in Yeshiva of South Shore, started a voluntary Zoom shiur for his class. It quickly spread to friends, neighbors, and friends of friends, and now he has thousands of children logging in every afternoon. Rabbi Ross shares his story and his passion for teaching Torah - which is something we can all learn from. Every week he gives the kids a test and raffles off thousands of dollars in Amazon gift cards - keeping the kids motivated and engaged. The shiur - which is open to any elementary school talmid - will continue through the summer (and beyond!). Register for the shiur and help Rabbi Ross sponsor prizes at studyingnavi.com. He also runs an organization to help kids in discreet and unique ways, and you can help out at mjya.org.
