Seven Cures to a Lean Purse The First Cure: Start thy purse to fattening. Arkad (Richest Man in Babylon) advises saving 10% of your annual income to start building up your wealth (or purse). "For every ten coins thou placest within thy purse take out for use but nine. Thy purse will start to fatten at once and its increasing weight will feel good in thy hand and bring satisfaction to thy soul". We discuss automated deduction and my personal revelation that wealth is independence.  It's not simply saving to buy, saving for rainy day, saving for retirement. It is saving so I have freedom to do what I want, when I want, with whom I want, without regard to the cost. The Second Cure: Control thy expenditures. Arkad advises against luxury expenditures that ultimately become confused as necessities. "The gold we may retain from our earnings is but the start", and, "What each of us calls our 'necessary expenses' will always grow to equal our incomes unless we protest to the contrary", and, "Confuse not the necessary expenses with thy desires". We discuss personal strategies of electric vehicles and solar to save money.  We comment on the terrible leadership from the Federal Government. I recommend a list of expenditures that should be cut from the federal budget. The Third Cure: Make thy gold multiply. Arkad advises to invest and to compound the investment return from these savings. "The earnings it will make shall build our fortunes ... Learn to make your treasure work for you. Make it your slave. Make its children and its children's children work for you". We discuss my 401K story from the early 1990s. The Fourth Cure: Guard thy treasures from loss. Arkad advises against taking a risk of loss and investing get-rich-quick schemes: "Is it wise to be intrigued by larger earnings when thy principal may be lost? I say not. The penalty of risk is probable loss. Study carefully, before parting with thy treasure, each assurance that it may be safely reclaimed. Be not misled by thine own romantic desires to make wealth rapidly". Arkad also advices that you seek advice from those that are knowledgeable with money. "Gold flees the man who would force it to impossible earnings or who followeth the alluring advice of tricksters and schemers or who trusts it to his own inexperience and romantic desires in investment." Arkad's advice here is about avoiding get-rich-quick or very aggressive wealth creation strategies. We discuss the length of time it takes to save money. Manage your money carefully and make wise choices. The Fifth Cure: Make of thy dwelling a profitable investment. Arkad advises buying versus renting your principal residence, and to use your residence to establish a business. "I recommend that every man own the roof that sheltereth him and his", and, "Nor is it beyond the ability of any well-intentioned man to own his home". We discuss the housing crisis in California and San Diego, especially for first time homeowners. The Sixth Cure: Ensure a future income. Arkad advises on having a pension and future retirement income. "Therefore do I say that it behooves a man to make preparations for a suitable income in the days to come, when he is no longer young, and to make preparations for his family should he be no longer with them to comfort and support them". We discuss the benefits of having a financial planner. The Seventh Cure: Increase thy ability to earn. Arkad advises to keep developing your own skills to increase your investing wisdom and also to increase your earnings power. "The more of wisdom we know, the more we may earn", and, "That man who seeks to learn more of his craft shall be richly rewarded". Pursue Your Life, Your Liberty, and Your Pursuit of Happiness! Isolation is the worst form of punishment - are you disconnected from a vibrant, real, faith-building community? Guys, we need to take the time and make the effort to develop strong relationships with others. STRESS kills people - it poisons your body! There is a world-wide focus on the “mental health crisis” - 51% increase of actual hospitalization because of suicidal inclinations last year! Do not ignore your mental health! 48% of men will have a challenge with mental health some time in their lives. Peace happens through an action verb: thinking. We need to get our minds right, our thoughts placed on things that help us, build us up, equip us to be the men we desire to be! Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. PCA parents, I am so excited to share this incredible episode with you - our guest is Dr. Jeremiah Johnston and he's talking about his new book Unleashing Peace - Experiencing God's Shalom in Your Pursuit of Happiness - you're going to want to get a copy or two of this resource! Below are just a few highlights of what Jeremiah will share in his book and on this podcast - these truths can literally transform your life and the life of your family! It saddens me that the church is woefully behind in helping people with mental health issues, because every single person is somewhere on the mental wellness trajectory. Mental wellness is a conversation that includes all people of God. According to the World Health Organization, depression is now the leading cause of disability in the world. The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. As I see it, Jesus was talking about and teaching wellness before anyone, but he used a different word: shalom - the best form of wellness there is. Stress kills people and poisons our bodies. Debilitating anxiety has become ubiquitous, unfortunately increasing in all age levels. Rates of major depression in teenages increased 52 percent in the 2010s from the previous decade and 63 percent among young adults. Shalom, along with its variations, appears 550 times in the Scriptures. 50 Happiness is not a feeling; it is a lifestyle, according to Jesus. Peace happens through an action verb: thinking. Philippians 4:8 - Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:9 - What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you. Each time you experience anxiety, try to identify the lies you are thinking and instead focus on the truth. Common lies include: God has forgotten me. God doesn't love me. God has given up on me. I just committed that sin for the hundredth time. I am never going to make it. I am alone. I am a failure. Key application: You are never more like Jesus than when you - with great concern (not condemnation or anger or frustration) - intervene with someone in their time of affliction. So how can we implement the “Presence Principle”? Two words: create margin. We have to resist the busyness of the time that pulls us from the unscheduled moments to be the presence of Jesus for others (and in doing so, experience His power in fresh ways in our own lives). To experience peace, we must learn to live by faith in the promises and character of God. No one lives by having faith in explanations. The Bible presents vulnerability as a necessity of balanced Christian living. “My grace is sufficient for you.” (2 Corinthians 12:9) The seventeenth-century Puritan thinker Richard Baxter keely wrote in a treasured hymn, “Christ leads me through no darker rooms than he went through before.” You see, our bodies, including our brains, are part of who we are, just as the Holy Spirit is part of who we are. It's a whole package: body, soul, and spirit. To be at our best, we need to invest time and energy pursuing our best possible health spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Immediate Steps to Care for Your Body and Mind Get enough sleep Have daily fitness time Work on daily stress management Be intentional about what you put into your body Maintain a healthy weight

This year's theme is Civility and the line-up of speakers and topics is fantastic - we would love to see you for any or all of the sessions! On Tuesday, students will hear from Alexandra Hudson, author of Against Politeness, a soon-to-be-released book on why “civility” is more important than “politeness” in our current cultural climate. There will also be a panel discussion with college presidents Dr. Adam Wright (DBU) and Dr. Blake Thompson (Mississippi College) along with Alliance Defending Freedom attorney and former PCA parent Ryan Bangert discussing the “cancel culture” on the college campus and how as Christians we need to learn to engage and not shy away from the opportunity to live boldly for Christ while in college. The final session for Tuesday morning will feature Dr. Jeremiah Johnston, president of the Christian Thinkers Society and author of a new book titled Unleashing Peace: Experiencing God's Shalom in Your Pursuit of Happiness.  On Wednesday morning, students will get to hear from Darrell Harrison with Just Thinking Ministries as well as Caleb Kaltenbach, author of Messy Truth: How to Foster Community without Sacrificing Conviction - incredible book, convicting and encouraging at the same time! And Wednesday's session will end with a crowd favorite - Christian illusionist Jim Munroe - check out his I Am Second testimony! Mental Health Expert, Dr. Nicole Cain, joins the podcast for a third time for this amazing episode on Imposter Syndrome. Dr. Cain does a great job in explaining what Imposter Syndrome is, what causes it and how to properly cope with it. It is something that most of us deal at some point or another, whether it be at work, athletics, school or social media. Imposter Syndrome keeps us from taking chances, achieving goals and living life to our fullest capabilities and leads to us living with regret. The tips and advice from Dr. Cain will help you get over these hurdles and increase your confidence and strengthen your mindset. I also get her thoughts on "fake it til you make it" and if that is a positive behavior. She turns the tables on me and asks me how I've been able to overcome my Imposter Syndrome and what still holds me back, which includes my lack of meditation and all of the benefits that would bring to me and my lifestyle. Are You Struggling in Your Pursuit to Create Wealth in Your Home Business   Let’s talk about some keys to “struggle free” wealth creation…   Do you ever feel and acknowledge that you have - ENOUGH? How often do you hear anyone share that feeling?   Very seldom, I am guessing.   Contentment around “where you are” and your current situation has less to do with what’s happening on the outside, and much more to do with your vision, and what’s going on inside of you.   It’s the vision you are using to view your life, and where you are headed.   Let’s start with focusing on what you already have. Look around you and find some things to appreciate and feel grateful for.   It really is true that more will show up when you do this.   Find some way to be content with what you have NOW, and expand that to keep moving toward what you want more of.   Finding contentment does not mean you should never stretch or want more. Not at all.   Instead, it means that you want to focus on Happy, and still Hungry.   Happy with where you are today, in this moment. And Hungry to continue your journey and find more of what you have and want.   Questions and actions for you -   Look around, and note what you have “enough” of right now.   What do you feel you don’t have enough of?   How might you find contentment within the two?   Take a few moments to focus on areas in your life where you feel “rich.” How does that feel, after you focus there? How does your soul feel?   What are you happy with and what are you hungry for?   Practice a feeling of gratitude for both.   Life will give you as much as you are open to receive.   Paul “Bear” Bryant, one of the winningest college football coaches in history didn’t focus on what his players did wrong. Instead, he replayed game films of what was great; what he wanted more of; and he inspired his players to put their attention there and continue to get more of that.   The subconscious mind is the source of all that we manifest in life. Your inner pictures create your outer reality.   If you can imagine something clearly, and then conjure up the feeling of what it is like to have that already, then your mind begins to accept that experience as real.   What we concentrate on and turn our attention to is what we will get, and what we will get more of.   Taking inspired action is important, and having a clear mental picture of where we are going is even more critical.   Ernest Hemingway - Never mistake motion for action.   If your actions are not taking you where you want to go, step back and evaluate your vision first, and pay attention there.   Questions for you:   How much time do you spend focused on what you don’t have, what you do not want and what is not working?   How much time do you spend focused on what you do want and what is currently working?   How might things change in your life if you shifted that just 10 percent, to the positive? What about 20-25% and more?   Take a survey of your home and surroundings. Do the things around you inspire you and make you feel uplifted?   If not, release and rid yourself if whatever is not putting you in a good place.   You can’t have a solid vision and procrastinate.
